FYI I have been ordering their pizza for YEARS. Was very good. Salarno's Pizza in Berwyn is no longer. The phone number is answered by another place called  Brando's Beef and Pizzaria. It is located  around the corner. They assured us that  they have the Salarno's pizza. We ordered it. IT WAS TERRIBLE. I would not call the Salarno's phone number again It is not the same pizza at all. I have no idea what happened to the original Arnies pizza. I am sorry to see i gone. The only good pizza I have had in years.
Review Source:What gives? Â Came for pizza last weekend and the place is "CLOSED FOR REMODELING". Â There was, however, no activity going on inside and I have a sneaking suspicion it may never reopen.... Â This is very, very sad for anyone who grew up in Cicero or Berwyn since this was the last of its kind in the neighborhood. Â Guess I'm going to have to check out Salerno's on the Fox which is rumored to still use the original 1966 recipe!
Review Source:Horrid. Â What a waste of $20 and 2 hours.
Ordered delivery here this afternoon, around 1:45pm. Â I was told 35 minutes, which I thought was impressive. Â When I called to check in after it hadn't arrived after 60 minutes, I was told that it was not yet ready. Â Huh? Â Then miraculously, it appeared in about 15 minutes. Â Read: Â it had been sitting there.
Until today, I've never encountered a pizza that I found inedible. Â I'll wince my way through an awful Papa John's or random food club frozen brand if it's available at a party. Â
I threw the entire Salerno's order out.
The pizza had an odd, perhaps rotten, taste like too much salt and old cheese [shudder, gag] Â
They don't even cut the pizza in squares. Â This is far from authentic Chicago thin crust.
The mozzarella sticks had obviously been sitting out, and then perhaps re-fried. Â Half arrived as empty fried tubes - no cheese. Â The others had some cheese that took up about 1/4 of an otherwise empty fried tube.
I think the delivery driver had an inkling that she was handing over a bad meal, as she gave me back my tip.
What a disappointment. Â Perhaps I caught them on a bad day, as there are other positive reviews here, which led me to call in the first place. Â Don't make the same mistake that I did.
I hate to be a bad guy here. Honestly! Â I have been here a few times and each trip has been worse than the last. Â First time I had pizza and it was great! Â 5 stars in my book. Â Went a few months later and ehhh, I thought it was "ok". Â Last night I stopped in and ordered baked clams, pizza bread, half slab for the daughter, wife had veal caprice, I had veal something or another. I honestly forget. Baked clams were good. No complaints. Pizza bread was good. Â Ribs were average. Â The veal caprice was almost like eating sweet and sour chicken. Â Not an ounce of chicken in it but you would swear it was. Â My veal was ok. What burned our butts was the server never asked us what we would like for our side. Â All of a sudden we get a soup bowl of spaghetti and a request to split it. Â No other bowls, plates, nothing. Â
I think after this last fiasco I will have to find another place for Italian.
My family has been coming here for years, whether its for take-out or for a special occasion. The pizza is perfect-at least thats what I think, given my addiction to carbs in general.
Last night I came here with my boyfriend after having a major craving for pizza. We ordered a small(perfect for 2 hungry people) and it was great. However, after finding a hair in his pizza, my boyfriend alerted the staff. They were incredibly apologetic, making us another whole pizza & giving us another round of free drinks.
I am writing this review to commend the service at this restaurant. They are clearly striving for great service and food and are not afraid to admit a slip-up. Because of this, I will be back again and again!
I have been eating at salernos since the early 70's when it was located on 16th street and was just a little bar with mama salerno making pizzas for the guys that would stop in after work for a beer or two or 10. Â That was back in the day when they didnt deliver anywhere and when you picked up your pie, the gave you a number, like 95, for you to pick it up. Â They didnt need your name or phone number. Â
Well, times have changed and while there are MANY SALERNO PIZZA RESTAURANTS, I still go to the one in south Berwyn. Â I love everything I have ever eaten there, all the way down to the salad. Â Which by the way is my favorite, pizza with a side salad. There ravoli's are huge and really nice and plump. Â Â
There regular pizza is a very thick, dense dough, but you can get it thin also. Â You choose. Â I like both. Â I will CONTINUE TO EAT AT SALERNOS for the rest of my days...ITS MY FAV...Try it. you wont be sorry.
My family & I have been coming here off and on over the past few years. I've had some good pizza here and some mediocre ones. I would call this place hit or miss, but my last few outings here have been good. The thin and regular crust pizzas are enjoyable. The service is attentive and friendly to your needs. My only complaints are the place doesn't offer much in regards to atmosphere and the television at the bar is badly burned out. I wouldn't want to come here if I want to enjoy a pizza and watch a game on the tv.
Review Source:Just made my second visit here, specifically for the bruschetta. I love this stuff. Not an overwhelming amount of garlic, lots of tomato, and a thick slab of mozzerella on top. Excellent! Wish I could say the same for the lasagna though. It was probably the worst I've ever gotten at an Itailian restaurant. Seemed to be a lot of dry hamburger meat instead of meat and sauce; actually, the only sauce I noticed was the small amount they ladled over the top. My sister got the Pasta Romano, and said it was very good. Â Definitely a failure on the lasagna though. Next time I'll get two orders of bruschetta and call it a meal!
Review Source:This is the kind of place that you want to like and occasionally get let down... Â but you go back because it's short walk and you convince yourself that it wasn't that bad last time.
The pizza is better than most.  Particularly the thin crust in the small  personal size...  if you have a big appetite.  The wife Loves the lasagna.
We stopped going for a few years because friends in the BPD told us stories of responding to burglar alarms that were set off by the rats in the kitchen. Â Apparently the size of small dogs. Â This disappointed us greatly.
New ownership took over and cleaned the place up and we eagerly went back for a thin crust and lasagna. Â We were happy to find the same menu and recipes.
The service is a bit spotty... Â I think because they're simply understaffed. Â The last time we went the only person who served us was the bus boy. Â He brought us bread and water and after 15 min, we were done with that, tipped him well, and went on our way.
I'm sure we'll convince ourselves to go back cause there's something comfortable about the place and the food is good and reasonable. Â Not to mention there's the thin crust and lasagna.
And we can walk to Olive or Twist from there for a nite cap or four.
...an odd place with a crazy cast of regulars. Food is better than average and prices are just right. Expect to have a great meal in comfortable surroundings. Pizza is outstanding - I recommend keeping the toppings simple and requesting it prepared extra thin and WELL DONE - deelish! There are excellent meal specials every night (fave is Tuesday's all you can eat spaghetti - which IS NOT Ragu on top of noodles) and bar specials like $1.50 taps and $2.00 bottles.
Just go eat there...you'll like it!
We came on Wednesday with a fellow Yelper that suggested it.. and we came back again today because it's REALLY good!!
Warning: When you walk in, the smell of smoke is pretty disturbing but give your nose some minutes to adjust and you'll be fiiiiine. It won't get in the way of your delicious meal, believe it or not.
On the first visit, service was okay but it was really great today. The food was consistently good though.
You are given bread and I love that it's sooo soft and fresh. I've been to fancy shmancy places that have terrible bread.
The calamari, as some have mentioned, is super fresh and definitely makes the Top 3 on my list of favorites.
I'm not a big fan of soup or salad, and they were super accommodating--they gave me a baked potato instead. :)
I had the lasagna on both visits because it's my favorite Italian dish and I haven't had something this good since Como Inn. I've been to a lot of Italian restaurants but I don't think I've rated any on Yelp because they haven't been memorable. I almost always order lasagna and it's always been disappointing. Not this time, I paid full price today for the lasagna. On Wednesday, it was almost 50% off for almost the same large portion. It was a great deal! I think they have meal specials Mon-Thur 6-8pm and they have drink specials every day.
After eating all that, I can't possibly fit dessert in my stomach. I want to go back and try everything else.. especially the other appetizers and the pizza, they looked SO good on the other tables!
Been here a few times, including as part of a large group. Â They are a bit more expensive if you're not getting pizza, and for large groups, as long as you reserve ahead of time, they have a pretty large dining area for them. Pizza is very similar to the Roosevelt Salerno's, which shouldn't be a surprise at all as the two Salerno's ran a single restaurant at one time. Overall, the food is great, but the service could be faster. Not to slight the servers, but it's because they're generally overworked.
Review Source:I've been here twice as a friend of mine used to work here. Â Both times I ordered the lasagna. Â It's a very "old school" tasting lasagna. Â Lots of marinara sauce and a strong garlic flavor. Â It's exactly what I'm looking for at times and it hit the spot. Â I will be back with my friend for sure when I come to Berwyn for a visit
Review Source:I've been coming to Arnie's for many many years. Â It's a no frills neighborhood Italian family restaurant with consistently excellent grub. Â Depending on when you go, service can vary. Â Sunday afternoon? Â One server? Â You're going to experience slow service. Â But, the food rocks!
What I've had multiple times that is rockin': Â Chicken Parmasan, Linguine in white clam sauce, Pizza, Calamari, Lasagna and Stuffed Shells.
The high note of the appetizers is the calamari. Â I haven't had better anywhere. Â And please, PLEASE, I dare you to challenge me on this and send me recommendations! Â I'm always looking for tender non-superchewy calamari!
Pizza: Â Get the Dee Special. Â It has ricotta, spinach, tomato and onion. Â It's like Lasagna Pizza with that ricotta taste and texture. Â You can get thin crust or their doughy thicker crust (regular). Â We tried the thicker and it was still nice and crispy, cooked perfectly!
Why not 5 stars you ask? Â Service can be average, and that's fine. Â The food is well above average. Â But for Berwyn, Illinois, they charge more than nice River North restaurants. Â It's pricey. Â Drinks are pricey too. Â You can get a glass of house wine at almost any Chicago restaurant cheaper than at Salerno's. Â On the flip side, the food portions are disgustingly enormous, like Maggiano's. Â If you get an appetizer and one order Chicken Parmagan and split it with your date, you'll both be stuffed beyond belief.
I am suprized to see the unhappy reviews. We enjoy the pizza and have enjoyed food at the restaurant. But they are getting a little high in their prices. We catered one time from there and the food was really good. Everyone loved the chicken and stuffed shells. I like the food better then LaNotte (the place next door).
Review Source:I once ordered a margherita pizza in the very height of summer. Â They must've been saving the slimiest, mushiest, most tasteless winter tomato just for me, because it ended up on my pizza. Â I mean, c'mon! Â Even a summer tomato that falls off a produce truck and rolls down the highway for a few miles will be halfway decent. Â The tomato of doom ruined the pizza--which wasn't that great anyway!
After closing on weekend evenings, the chairs are cleared out and it turns into Arnie Salerno's Bar, a gay bar with a cowboy-themed drag show. One look at the toadlike, tuxedo-clad, Count Dracula-esque figure of Arnie Salerno on the takeout menu makes me think he wouldn't care for the idea! Â
They ought to keep the bar running in the daytime, too---anything to keep 'em from making pizza!
Being on the other side of the alley from this Salernos, we have eaten there many times. The staff is friendly but pretty forgetful, the service is not that fast, but not painfully slow, and I like it when we can sit outside in the summer.
Now, I am picky about my pizza, and for some reason they always always always get it wrong there, so we decided that we're done with it for a while. It's disappointing to hear every time, "we messed up your order. Do you want to wait another 30 minutes for us to make you a new pizza or just take the one we made wrong?" With two little kids, I would prefer not to wait, but I'm always disappointed. The pizza they make standard has an overpowering layer of cheese that does not stick to the crust, and not enough sauce, and their sausage is too greasy.
I have fond memories of Salerno's Pizza from childhood (I used to attend school up the street) and loved, absolutely loved the taste of their pizza. It's the kind of place where you get what you expect and there is nothing wrong with that. I wish more restaurants were more like that, less covert. At any rate, Salerno's is good for family and friends as well as take-out. Order it for large events and I'm sure it will be a hit.
Nota Bene: Now, I haven't had this pizza in over ten years, so don't yelp at me if it isn't as good as I remember it to be.
I love Arnie and his pizza. Â I used to work there for a few years, and for the most part, have fond memories. Â I think that the majority of their food is great. Â Their bruschetta is the best I've had from any restaurant and their pizza is excellent also. Â The key is too get the thin crust Dee's special (ricotta, spinach, tomato, onion...mmmm!
