The wine is great and well priced and you won't find a better "nice meal out" in Brookfield, from my adventures there so far. What surprised me most was the fun atmosphere. The tables are decoupaged with cool old bits and pieces, like a vintage school kid's map of France. There are couches for lounging and the flights are well thought out and well priced so you can linger for a while, enjoying. A great addition to the neighborhood!
Review Source:So I went last night with my husband and friend. The wine was great and fairly priced, however, the food, not so much.
We ordered a cheese flight (3 different cheeses) as an appetizer for the three of us. Â We chose the fontina, cheddar and cocoa cardona. Â This is what you get for $12:
One very thin slice of fontina, one very thin piece of the cocoa cardona and two small triangles of the cheddar, 4 1/3 size pieces of raisin bread, 2 tiny pieces of French bread and 3 club crackers. Â Seriously, what a joke. Â They need to reconsider the amount of cheese and bread to serve. Â At least 3-4 pcs. of each type and more bread and crackers.
Then we each ordered a pizza. Thin crust doesn't even describe it. They claim that it's 14". 14 square inches??? Â This thing was about 7"x7" and wafer thin served on a 14" slate tile.
The evening cost $150, $50 of which was wine which I was ok with because we ordered two bottles! Â I couldn't believe it. Â
I would got back but go elsewhere for dinner.
My wife and I went with some friends this past Saturday.
There was no live entertainment but was still a comfortable bar to just sit and talk and have a good time. Joe and Ryan were our servers and both were great and took the time to explain the wines and cheeses.
The prices were affordable, the drinks and cheese were excellent. The ladies loved also the chocolate martinis.
We will be back again.
A quick update: Â I took my wife here last night for the first time, and though she is not normally a wine drinker she really enjoyed herself because she found wines that she liked. Â She tried the Reisling flight and liked the differences in all three. Â I had the Cab flight. Â We paired it w/ the cheese flight and finished it all with the chocolate truffles which are made by a local Brookfield business. Â Those truffles were DIVINE, especially when paired with the LBV Port I had. Â My wife tried that port (her first) with the truffles and though we've been married for 13 years I have never seen that look on her face if you catch my meaning. Â
The service was very warm and inviting as we went after the live music so it was nice and quiet which is what we were hoping for since we have 3 kids. Â
Great experience.
Wow! is about all I can say. Â Went there for the first time tonight. Â Had a martini and a champagne flight, the cheese flight and the charcuterie (pork three ways) plate. Â What a bargain! Â The cheese and meat plates would have costs at least double in downtown Chicago. Â Not only a great value, but also very high quality. Â I will definitely be back and it will be difficult for me to try the rest of the menu considering how awesome the cheese and meat plates were. Â Oh yeah, and the drinks were great too!
FYI, reading other reviews, it sounds like the best time to go here is when it's not busy to get better service. Â We were the only ones not sitting at the bar and the service was excellent.
My husband and I were looking for something different one night, and we like wine, so when we yelped for wine bars and came up with Salt Creek, we decided to give it a try. Â SO HAPPY we did! We weren't sure what to expect and were a little underwhelmed by the decor, but honestly, it grows on you -- it's relaxed and comfy. Â
We sat at the bar the first night. The bar backs apparently aren't allowed to speak to customers, and we didn't realize the woman was a barback and couldn't understand why she was standing there polishing glasses and not taking orders. Â In a few minutes the bartender came out from the back and was extremely gracious - she laid out glasses of water and asked if we had questions. We ordered a couple of the different red wine flights, decided we really liked the very reasonably priced Silver Ridge Cabernet and ordered a bottle with a cheese flight. Â It'd be great if when a barback see a new customer come in clearly looking for beverages, that they'd go fetch the bartender rather than continuing to polish and stare off into space.
For your cheese flight, try the Bellavitano - it's a slightly creamy feel, sharp cheddary/paramsony kind of taste, and so, so good. Â The cheese flights come with some good crusty bread, a few nice almonds, a little dish of nice olives and some utterly tasteless wafers that we could really do w/out. Â If you have a bigger group, order all the cheeses along with a bread platter, you'll get more bread, olive oil for dipping, butter and more of the good olives. Â We've had all the cheeses now and really enjoyed them all aside from one of the goat cheeses (can't remember the name) that was a little too goaty. Â
Regarding one reviewer's remark about wanting to have some cliff notes, if you will, on the cheese, I'd have to agree. When we go to Coopers Hawk to get their cheese platters (which change monthly), we get a nice index card with great information about the cheese we're eating and what wines go well with the cheeses. Â Because SCWB doesn't change their cheeses often, I have to think it would be relatively simple to put something together for us cheese novices to have to refer to on the cheeses we're eating.
That first night we were there, there happend to be a band and the place was pretty full which is why we ended up at the bar. Â We kind of liked that vantage point though, and the bands we've seen so far have really been quite entertaining. Last weekend there was a jazz trio called the Paul Abella Jazz Trio; they brought a guest guitarist/vocalist along, so that night they were a quartet. One of their guys plays the xylophone - seriously! and the guy is a genius - Paul plays this drum box he sits on along with a myriad of other instruments and is incredible, Â another plays the bass with finesse and great passion and the guitarist/vocalist really brought them all together.
We've experienced all the wait staff now, and frankly like them all very well with the exception of one. Â The tall wiry guy is a little more rambunctious/slightly pushy than we typically like in a waiter and he's not as great as the others in coming back to refill water, in fact the other shorter, more mild mannered waiter we like better was refilling his buddy's tables waters frequently.
One night we'd already shared a bottle of wine and ordered another clearly stating to this tall waiter we were going to have one glass then bring the rest home. He asked if he could check to make sure they had the proper packaging for us to do so, came back, said all was well and brought the second bottle. Â We'd both had a glass, he came back and said as he was holding the bottle above my glass, "not too much left, huh? may as well finish it off." Before words could come out of my mouth, he was pouring very impolite glasses of wine. Â Wasn't the end of the world, didn't ruin the night, etc., but was irritating. Â All the other wait staff is extremely accommodating and meld right in with this very relaxing atmosphere.
We brought our 19 year old daughter one night when there wasn't a band. The three of us shared a cheese flight and a pizza - the pizza was exceptional as was the cheese flight. Â As we were getting up to go, our daughter (whose rather discerning about restaurants for her tender age) says, "I really get why you guys like this place, it's so laid back."
And there you have it, we're happy regulars now :)
Have been wanting to check this place out and with the help of a Groupon we went tonight. Â Got there about 7:30 no tables inside so we sat at the bar and entertained ourselves with a deck of cards and a magnet do-dad. Â They were very busy and perhaps a little short staffed at first, still not the best service. Â We had the Tuscan style pasta, skip this dish (tasted like jar'd sauce with some fresh green onion and some other garnish. Â The wine was good. Â Entertainment every Sat. night, it was nice. Â I will give it another try as I think it has more potential than what we experienced tonight.
Review Source:Last night for my Groupon so we headed out to have a complete dinner. Â Ordered the sangria pitcher and a cheese flight, since they seem to have decent reviews and per other reviews they have slow service, well after 45 minutes, we finally got our cheese flight (the waitress never came back to see to place the remainder of the order). Â The sangria was watered down and too much sugar added - not the type that I enjoy (it tasted like watered down Kool-Aid). Needless to say we asked for our bill and went elsewhere for our main dinner. Â Slow service (maybe because it was the last day of the Groupon), waitress was nice, cheese over priced, and if there is ever a next time, stick with a wine flight.
Review Source:I have got to say that after reading a lot of these reviews, I had VERY low expectations, but as my Groupon was expiring in two days, felt I needed to use it and give the place a chance. Â We went in very early in an attempt to avoid any music and get better service and that must have worked! Â Our waiter was not really "heavy sell" - he was hardly "sell" at all, but certainly more than friendly and helpful. Â
I got the summer white flight and husband had a beer. Â I thought the 2 ounce pours were larger - more like 3 ounces and all three wines were excellent. Â I ate the mussels (no pasta, although you can order that) which came with a ton of crusty bread pieces on the side. Â Husband had the charcutterie plate which he loved and finished all of. Â I was still quite hungry (mussels may look like a lot, but are not too much substance) and so we got the cookies for dessert along with a sparkling riesling and another beer. Â They brought out an assortment of tiny cookies - maybe 8 or so - in a giant martini glass - cute.
Even without the Groupon, the meal was totally reasonable - I think like $50 or so - and with $25 off, even better!
I would totally come back here to try the pizza and the sparkling flight! Â Cheers to a great concept and to pulling it off very well!
Tables are too close together to sit comfortably. Service is unbearably slow, 4 hours for a cheese flight, meal, and dessert. Drink service took over half an hour each time. The check took a half an hour to turn around after taken with payment and had to be given to another wait staff member because ours was no where to be found. Bring you own water, they don't refill. Service was almost the worst I've ever experienced.
Don't go when there is music if you want to talk to the person you are with. It is so loud, we should have brought ear plugs to prevent hearing loss. And that was after they turned it down because the artist wanted to play even louder. The table behind us, closer to the music, left over half a bottle of wine on the table, it was so loud. The wait staff could only take orders between songs it was so loud. That was only in the last 20 minutes we were there. Service was awful even before then.
Cheese flight was good, but very expensive for the quantity received. Dinner was okay but pricey. Montana beer was good but $5 a can. Sangria was good and appropriately priced. Dessert was okay and appropriately priced.
Thanks to Groupon and Living Social, my husband and I have been to Salt Creek Wine Bar twice. Â I LOVE that it is literally steps away from the Metra stop. Â It really fixes the problem of making sure there is a designated driver. Â Hooray!
This is a place to go and linger. Â Grab a spot on one of the comfy sofas, order a wine flight and some cheese and relax. Â Both times, we ordered a flight and cheese, ordered a bottle of our favorite from the flight, and shared an entree. Â Service can be somewhat slow, but I Â like that I don't feel at all rushed. Â The server we had both times was knowledgeable about both the wine and cheese, and how to pair them.
All in all, one of our favorite wine bars, and much more reasonably priced than those in the city.
I'm a novice when it comes to wine so this is a good place for me to learn.
Their selection of wine is very impressive with a little of everything or so it would seem. Â If you tire of wine, they have a full bar to keep you going. Â
Nearly every night has a different activity from discounts to bands. Â Many of the live bands they have are enjoyable to listen to. Â They also sell artwork for local artists. Â They can get on a wait list and when their name comes up, the artist can put up their work. Â Seems to be a good way for them to get exposure.
They have a small menu, but it is something you can work with. Â Hopefully they will grow this some. Â They had this fantastic duck sausage charcuterie, but they got rid of it!!!! Oh the horror.
The new one needs some help, but I understand they are trying to vary their menu.
My wife and I did the Living Social deal for wine and cheese flights. Â For about $18 we got three wine and cheese samples each - great deal. Â The wine selections were really good as well as the cheese. Â We also had a bowl of mussels to share between us which were pretty good. Â The waiter was also very helpful provided great attentive service.
My only knock on the place is the decor. Â It lacks a finished look. Â There were spots where it looked like furniture was missing and the artwork looked like a middle school art class. Â Also the floor needs to be replaced.
Overall - good wine selection, decent food, poor decor.
I recently made my way over to Salt Creek Wine Bar to kick off a birthday celebration for a friend. Â Despite a somewhat awkward diatribe on how they don't do separate checks, we proceeded into our wine and cheese tasting.
I order the Spring Whites flight. Â All three were amazing and I ended up ordering another glass of my favorite of the three. Â Unfortunately, I cannot recall the names as we went to two more bars after Salt Creek and the cheap beer may or may not have impaired my detailed memory.
The cheese was equally as good but unlike the wine, I didn't have a guide to tell me exactly what I was tasting. Â Given we were a group of seven and they did their best to give us a pretty large variety, when the server rattled off the descriptions of the cheeses, I just couldn't keep up. Â This is partially our fault for ordering such a large variety, obviously. Â However, I wish there was a way I could follow the progression of samples so I could order more in the future. Â I suppose being able to taste so many was a blessing and a curse. Â If in that situation again, I'd suggest that they bring the plates out periodically instead of all at once.
The evening started off great and the server ultimately redeemed himself by helping snap some photos and turning around our additional drink orders in pretty quick time. Â I will certainly be back.
Found a Living Social deal - $18 for a wine and cheese pairing for 2 people. So we decided to come here for one of my friends' Birthday get-together!
Our waiter comes up to the table and the very first thing he says is: "Let me make myself clear - I don't DO separate checks".
WOW - great first impression dude.
At one point, we asked for a few more crackers since we had some spreadable cheeses still left and needed something to put them on. So, the waiter brings back a bread and cracker basket with like 4 pieces and bread and a few crackers - and then charges us $5 for it. Kinda shady.
Ok enough complaining - I really do like this place...and it's too bad the server was so turrble.
Wine flights are around $9-10 for 3 different wines. The cheese plates are so good. We didn't order any food but the food looked really good! I'll definitely be back here - hopefully it was just a bad night for the server.
Not too pricey for the selection (I was a bit more knowledgeable of the beer selection than the wine). Â Nothing was more than $5 a glass / bottle, and for some of the imported beer I felt like it was a good deal; plus, Â I could see a similar place charging more because of how nice it was inside.
I was able to play in the open mic as well. Â To any musician folk that may be interested, the sound/PA was great. Â Met a couple new friends via their performance, also! Â It was a good night.
I like Salt Creek Wine Bar. It's calming & mellow.
The musicians I seen perform are excellent.
I also avoid Mondays open mic. It's a little obnoxious.
The wine list is fantastic.
I attended, I sat at the table, where Chris took care of me.
He was very friendly, and professional.
When I need a suggestion of a good wine to choose, he chooses one, and it's always phenomenal choice.
I love this place! I have been there twice and have thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Â I am a big fan of their wine flights since I'm not a wine expert. Â That way I can try three different kinds of wine and order a larger portion of which I like best.
Their cheese plates are really tasty and come with a good serving of bread. The dish of olives were also really good! I had a shrimp po' boy the first time I was there and it was very delicious! I leave feeling full but not overstuffed, which is always nice.
The atmosphere is cute and cozy. And the live entertainment has been a nice background to dinner! This place is great and I would recommend it to anyone!
This place is SUPER CUTE.
I grew up in Mt Prospect & know nothing about anything that goes on 'in the south'. However, my boyfriend grew up in Western Springs, so lately I've had a greater introduction to all things south of the border - the 290 border that is.
http://restaurant.com recently had a crazy 80% off of their $25 gift certificates. so, for $2 i purchased a $25 gift card redeemable with a $35 meal (including gratuity) that excludes alcohol.
the atmosphere is adorable. it's red - my favorite- and cozy feeling. the tables are close together - not so much so that you feel claustrophobic, but enough where getting to the restroom is an interesting challenge in navigation. there are couches, a bar and table seating available.
the menu is not extensive, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in temptation. also - I am on weight watchers, and the portions were not huge - THANK YOU! Nearly ever thing on the menu sounded amazing to me (as a caveat, it had been 10 hours since i had eaten by the time i sat down to dinner, so this could have factored in). my friend & i ordered the following items (complete with description & rating):
CHARCUTERIE PLATE
Jamon Serrano, Toscano Salami, & Duck Sausage with
Apple Brandy. Served with artisan bread, wholegrain
mustard, and cornichons.
I am not a big meat eater, but after a recent trip to Spain, I fell IN LOVE with jamon serrano. the sausage was very good too. I didn't try the salami - as i know i hate it. the cornichons were amazing & the bread was warm and yummy - perfect for mini sandwiches with the meat.
BREAD BASKET Artisan breads served with olive oil, butter,
and gourmet olives
I ordered this because when my friend suggested the Charcuterie Plate, I didn't know it came with bread. I was surprised and little annoyed that the waitress didn't mention we had bread coming with the meat plate when I ordered it, nor did she offer to take it back when she brought it and we were surprised that it came. On this note, one of the two reasons why this place got 4 stars instead of 5 was the waitress' over all seeming lack of knowledge about the wines or the food.
The basket itself is the same as that which comes with the meat plate, but instead includes butter & olives. I ended up wrapping this up to go.
PINOT NOIR - not sure which one, which I'm disappointed about as I'd love to warn you about it. I asked the waitress for a pinot noir recommendation and she proceeded to look over my shoulder over the menu with me and read presumably until she pinpointed the word 'noir'. it tasted like vinegar and reminded me very much of coloring easter eggs. i did drink it, because it is, in fact alcohol and cost $11, but in hind sight i wish it either a) had tasted good or b) had been a fun easter egg color like yellow.
BISTRO PASTA: OIL & WINE WITH CHICKEN Wine-friendly pasta for the cosmopolitan palate
Oil & Wine: Linguini with a delicate sauce of garlic-infused extra virgin
olive oil, white wine, scallions, chopped fresh tomato, and herbs.
Garnished with shaved Italian cheeses.
With:
Chicken: thinly-sliced grilled chicken breast. Add $2
I had a bite of this. It was nothing exceptional, but it did have flavor and was enjoyable.
SANDWICH PLATES
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches
all sandwiches served with mixed greens
The Fairview
Chicken strips topped with artisan cheddar cheese & cranberry
chutney. Tucked within a ciabatta and grilled.
I ordered this. It was good, however it definitely lacked a fullness of flavor. Perhaps it needed some more salt? Overall, however, I did enjoy it. Also, I asked the waitress if the mixed greens in question were tossed in salad dressing and if so if it could be put on the side. She responded with "I don't know. I think it's tossed in an oil & vinegar and it might be done in advance. I'll find out." Never did she come back to let me know one way or another, but I did receive the salad with some yummy dried cranberries sans dressing with something that appeared to be oil & vinegar on the side. I subsequently added the greens to my sandwich to add some additional texture and round out some flavor and really enjoyed it.
The other reason that the one precious star was omitted from a perfect 5 has to do with the fact that the entertainment is RIDICULOUSLY loud and drowns out even the most meager attempts at conversation. Perhaps they hope you'll get loaded and scream at your dinner companions, but I found this to be frustrating and it diminished the experience. I will say, however, that the entertainment in question was good, he just needed to be toned down a few decibels.
I would love to go back - on a night with NO entertainment.
Love this local wine bar. Tom is the owner and has years of experience in wine and is a friendly guy. They've got pages upon pages of wines to choose from and are always open to offering a suggestion. His wife is the chef and she does a great job! We really like the relaxed decor and appreciate that they have live entertainment and local artists bring in their artwork to hang.
We came here for a date night - a wine tasting - and were absolutely impressed with the small private room in back, the tablescapes and the beautifully plated, delicious food. We learned a good amount about the wines we tasted and were impressed that they were for sale at a discounted price that evening.
We just bought a LivingSocial deal for a wine & cheese flights for 2 for only $18 and can't wait to go back!
I took a date to the Salt Creek Wine Bar last week Friday. Â The atmosphere is good. Â They have a nice casual seating area near the stage area. Â The bar is attractive and the whole place has the air of careful attention to quality. Â It is classy without being fancy.
The food is pretty good. Â Reasonably priced for what you get. Â I'm a chef so i am a tough critic; keeping that in mind my date and i weren't wowed. Â But not upset by any means. Â
The entertainment on this particular Friday evening was really, really enthusiastic. Â Maybe not quite befitting a place with this sort of complexion. Â Despite a crowd that consisted solely of "the dining room" they proceeded to play at a volume which made conversation quite impossible.
I'm 27. Â I like loud music generally. Â But this particular combination of place and performance group just didn't work.
And if one reads down in the reviews you will see the local 'comics' who made it up on stage during an open mic not long ago. Â I didn't get a chance to see them make fools of themselves and proceed to naively post reviews about how badly they were treated. Â But i would assume those posts are easily the funniest things they are capable of producing. Â Another example of incautious selection of microphone recipients.
In summary i would suggest checking ahead to ensure the evenings entertainment is in line with your tastes to ensure you get the most out of your visit.
This rating refers to the open mic that is held there on Monday nights. It is a big clique. They advertise as a mostly music open mic, but other types of performers are welcome. This is not the case. I went there in June for the second time to attempt some humor. First time was back in November of last year. I apparently did well back then because the guys who run the open mic were yelling out jokes that I had done. And they gave me props the first time I was there. I made a few jokes this time around about having to wait a long time to perform, due to some snafu with the sign up list. I also joked around about one of the performers before me looking like a gypsy. One of the guys who runs the mic , in a post on here I believe, ripped on me for making fun of a 16 year old girl. Excuse me person in the audience, I need to ask you how old you are before I lightly make fun of you.. Anyway, as I was telling my last bit, one of the hosts of the open mic plugged in his acoustic gutiar and started playing. It was very loud and in disgust I walked off the stage without finishing. No matter how unhappy you were with what I did onstage, for a host to do this is extremely rude. And what I said was not that bad and it was very brief. If they did not like what I have to offer that is fine. But it is no reason to act like elitist jerks and interrupt someone else's set. By the way, my friend who was just with me for this second time and who also performed, and I are apparently banned from performing. Oh no, I am gonna cry about this one. If you do anything other than sing or play music, stay away from this place. Even if you are a musician or singer, consider staying away. The hosts like to play alot of acoustic Grateful Dead covers. Now, I like The Dead. Have seen them in concert and have some of their albums. But even Dead Heads will agree, unless you are on some sort of substance, the songs seem like boring 60 minute jams.
By the way, the guy who posted the review on here about my friend and I's performances, yeah, not so much. Most of the review is just name calling and filled with a few lies. What is this, the 5th grade?
One of the lies is I went around to everyone apologizing for my performance. All I did was go up to the two hosts and say don't take it too seriously and don't take it personal. Which they did. It wasn't an apology to me at all. I just thought there actions and reactions were insane.
Great place to meet up with friends. The food on the menu pairs well with their LARGE selection of wines. They also have flights if you do not want to commit to one particular wine.
You may eat light appetizers or order light meals. In the years that I have come here, I have ordered many different cheese flights, the Artisan Plates, and handmade pizzas. They also offer pasta and seafood if you are looking for more of a full-meal.
It's comfy, yet elegant. You may lounge for as long as you wish. Great ambiance.
This is one of my favorite places in all of Chicagoland. My first visit was in '06, soon after it had opened. At that time I was fresh out of college and was used to having all my drinks served in plastic cups...this was my gateway to adulthood. Thank you, Tom and Linda (owners), for giving me a good reason to grow up! :)
I've found some of my favorite wines while browsing their menu. Tom's passion for wine and spirits is evident and you can't help but share in his enthusiasm while he makes a recommendation. His wife, Linda, is one of the sweetest women I've ever met - always quick with a wave and a smile before she ducks back into the kitchen to tend to their small but delicious food options.
This is also another example of a venue that values local artists. My favorite piece of art was purchased from one of their exhibits. I've heard great jazz, ska, folk, bluegrass, and everything in between at their live shows. One thing I will say is that if you're looking for a quiet evening with your lovah, Saturday nights are not the way to go. Better make it a quiet Thursday night out.
I recommend Salt Creek Wine Bar for pre or post dinner drinks. It's a great place to start or end an evening!
I don't know why I waited so long to check out this place.
I live in Brookfield and drive by Salt Creek Wine Bar daily. I'm thinking wine bar, snooty, uppity, etc. I was dead wrong.
On my first visit I was pleasantly surprised by the laid back atmosphere. Local artists work adorn the walls and it's for sale to the public. I was immediately greeted by the bartender. When I sat down I was handed this large book. Yes, it's the wine list. It is very well organized and written well enough that you can easily choose a wine to suit your taste.
They have a wide variety of live music and an open-mic night every Monday. Grab your instrument and play a few songs for the crowd. The age range is diverse as is the crowd. It's a great place to have a glass of wine and relax.
The owners, Tom and Linda have done a great job. A combination of a fabulous wine list, full bar, and casual atmosphere. I have since become a regular of Salt Creek Wine Bar and would recommend it to everyone. -- Cheers!
My dad has a flower shop right down the street so every once in a while we'll go here. Â I really like this place. Â I haven't been here since turning 21, but I can say the non-alcoholic beer is good. Â They also have great cheese flights. Â I love cheese and they have an awesome selection. Â I also like the casual and cozy atmosphere. Â I like sitting on the couches. Â I'm looking forward to going back this summer and trying their wine and seeing the music scene.
Review Source:I've been coming here on a very regular basis for several years now. The atmosphere is stunning and quite romantic, a great reflection of the owners, Tom and Linda.
I never know what to eat. Pizza? Pasta with mussels? A Cheese Flight? Who knows. It's all wonderful and the extensive wine list may help decide on what to eat! Music almost every night? No problem! And Monday Open Mic? GREAT! They're even open Sundays to wind down before the week begins! See you there!
Stopped in the other day to grab a bite and a drink. Â They have a extensive wine list. Â I couldn't figure out what to order, so I went with a wine fight. Â The wine was great. Â
I got a pizza and I could only describe it as the smallest pizza I have ever had. Â For twelve dollars I figured I would get a bit more food. Â It looked like a tortilla with a little sauce and some cheese on it. Â Actually that is how I would describe the taste. Â My wife got a salad, and it was nothing special. Â I don't think I will ever eat here again. Â
It looks like they have some bands that play here quite often. Â I would go back for drinks and check out band. Â Other than that I don't think I will ever go back.
I decided to extend my stay in the suburbs. Â I should have my head examined. Â It's St. Patrick's Day and I am in no mood to deal with an overcrowded, rowdy bar. Â I flip through my mind's Rolodex of bars within walking distance of where I'm staying. Â Where oh where can I go that isn't filled with obnoxious amateurs?
Salt Creek Wine Bar, apparently.
I stroll inside, make my way to the bar, and have a seat. Â The bartender/owner Tom was more than cordial. Â The wine selection is plentiful with numerous offerings by the glass. Â I'm a fine of flights, as it gives me a chance to sample different wines, so I went with their Intriguing White flight, and enjoyed it immensely.
The atmosphere is cozy, as I believe wine bars should be. Â They feature live music several nights a week. Â
The owners and I got to chatting and discovered their children and I went to the same high school. Â It's nice to see a neighborhood place run by neighborhood people.
I asked how business was and Tom replied, "We're still here." Â So, please, help keep them here. Â Go pay them a visit.
Who knew this place existed!? Â Found right over the tracks, across from Irish Times (a classic LT hang out!). Â I came here to watch a friend's band play here. Â It's quite cozy, and small, kinda like a coffee shop small. Â There's a huge wine list, with a wide range of prices. Â Beer list isn't that impressive, but I guess that's ok being that it is a wine bar. Â It got busy, and they needed to have more servers on the floor as service was ok, but not great.
Review Source:I like this place!! If there are two reasons to visit Brookfield- it's the zoo and Salt Creek Wine Bar!! Variety is good, prices are even better! Cheese platter was pleasant and the Plato Espanol was a delicious complement to my Pinot Noir flight. This place has a homey neighborhood feel and is HUGE so you can have your own space- great relaxed conversation without feeling like you have to have on your Sunday best.
Review Source:I really do love this place. Nice selection of wines with a variety of prices. You can spend $5 a glass up to $25. Service has always been friendly and is a great place to stop if you are waiting for your table across the street. They have nice cheese plates and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Review Source:Chicago is not the sole destination for quality wine bars. Â This Brookfield spot has a great selection, food, tastings and top notch entertainment on a regular basis as well. Â
Tom and Linda take care of you here. Â By the second time you come in, you are on a first name basis. Â Tom is a wine master and although his wine list is the size of a small novel, it is an easy read. Â He makes sure you are drinking what you thought you ordered and if not, he is quick to comp the glass and get you what suits you.
Prices are reasonable (if not cheap). Â The food served up by Linda and her staff is good stuff. Â Nothing too elaborate but pretty unique, tasty, and made to go with the beverage of your choice. Â Don't let the name fool you, they have a great selection of craft and mainstream beers and enough spirits to pull together that Mojito or Rusty Nail you crave. Â
The atmosphere is friendly, relaxing and kind of like a basement rumpus room (yep - I am a boomer). Â Many nights there is entertainment consisting of local bands, groups, duos and solos that may belt out blues, jazz, reggae and even country and western. Â Tom and Linda regularly sponsor wine tastings and art related events which are always listed on the website and add to the fun. Â Â
The crowd ranges from twentysomethings to golden agers depending on the featured performers (and the lateness of the hour!). Â This is not a pick-up bar and it is not uncommon for a group of people there to be all one family, parents, spouses and siblings - all WELL over 30! Â Â Art produced by local artists adorns the walls, candles and quiet tables are there to provide a spot for the romantic. Â
This is a great place for a before or after dinner drink to support a night out at a special restaurant and it can be great destination spot when Tom has booked a popular band. Â My wife and I like to stop in during the week when we are not looking for a big meal but could use a sandwich or salad to go down with that drink we needed since we left the office! Â
It is also a good place to meet up with friends after work for a drink and conversation. Â It is right by the Brookfield train station. city folk can jump on the Metra/Burlington. Â Parking is on the street and there is plenty to go around.
This downtown Brookfield area has several good bars and restaurants within a city block distance to make a night of it. Â
If you are a wine enthusiast, GO there. Â Â Talk to Tom.
I love wine & I love Salt Creek for providing me with such a terrific selection, in a great atmosphere! The menu is quite large to fulfill any craving of red, white or sparkling you might desire. The food menu is simple, yet delicious. Â The bar is owned by a husband & wife that are very enthusastic about their business and provide terrific customer service. I would honestly say that this is one of my new favorite destinations for a low-key night with my man, cozied up on one of their plush sofas.
Review Source:Small neighborhood wine bar just steps from the commuter train in Brookfield. Â Crowd is middle age adults with some younger couples or girl friends. Â Mostly a couples place as opposed to a pick-up place. Â Noted for an extensive wine selection by the glass, they also have wonderful lighter-fare food. Â The panini bread is out of this world. Â Service is relaxed and very friendly. Â Music is often featured on the weekends (we were there on a Tuesday evening) and it can get very busy after 9 PM. Â Highly recommended.
