This place is going downhill since the change of ownership. Â It used to be one of our top places to go for their fish tacos and surf and turf tacos. Â The service used to be great with a lot of servers around making sure you were taken care off.
I went after the change of ownership and they changed the funky chairs and tables for some lame, bland, doctor's office furniture that has no personality. Â The prices went up and the service personnel went down and the quality service down with it. Â If I come in to a restaurant like this, the faster you come to offer me drinks, the more likely it will be for me to finish that beer and order another one before entrees are served, but no, with barely anyone there and two people doing nothing we waited for ever to get someone to offer us drinks. Â The food was alright and they removed some popular items from the menu. Â But the service was horrible.
Will not be going again and do not recommend it.
We were hungry and wanted Mexican food. The food was really good, good portion sizes, yummy salsa....but wait, at 2:00 they were out of iced tea? You're kidding right?
Service so damn slow, so don't go in a hurry. The place only had a couple of other people. So no reason for slowness.
My friend's beef enchilada was filled with cheese, with beef on top, as if they forgot it was a beef enchilada. My chicken enchilada was seasoned well, and tasted great. With a Yelp check in you get a free appetizer with the purchase of 2 entrees. We chose the nachos. The plate was huge. The cheese, I thought, was strange, not slice like strange, but close. It took forever for it to be delivered to our table...We could've already done shopping with the time it took to bring it to our table.
Fail.
The main banner in their website advertises:
"Happy Hour M-F, 4:00-7:00, 1/2 price drinks and apps"
We got there at 5:30 and tried to order some.
"We don't do that" Â
Huh? Â
"We aren't doing that".
It's on your website.
"Yeah, I know. But we aren't doing it"
Well, I'm not either.
Adios
Not really a fair review because I haven't been here since the late 90s during my NAU days. It used to be the place to get crazy on a Thursday night, though. There were better bars in town for chillin' with a beer, but only San Felipe's let you get on the bar and make a fool of yourself. It had a good vibe and some decent drinks, so unless it hasn't changed completely it should still be worth a visit.
Review Source:HORRIBLE!!! on so many levels but we'll start with the service. there was this movie House Bunny, bad ratings on IMBD but actually pretty dang funny. anyhoo, the main character was a blond playboy bunny that thought the assessment of her personality as 'vapid' was a great compliment. that pretty much sums up our server, who was simultaneously the epitome of Gen Y, really, it's just too much trouble for me to bring anything to you in a timely fashion, i MUST sit & gossip with the bartender for at least 10 minutes before bringing your already poured tequila and opened beer. I know I sound old but in the days I was a server (& at some nice places, mind you, Spago, Roy's, resorts, high end catering) I didn't mess around. I knew my menu, my wine pairings & if the food or drink was late it certainly wasn't my fault & I was offering some sort of concession for it.
There were only 3 or 4 tables in the entire joint & we were our server's one of two tables. Just plain awful what happened to customer service, to expedience? I don't care if this person is a college student, in college I worked at a 4 star resort in Southern Oregon and I was professional & actually gave a hoot about giving the customer a quality experience. The Food. oh dear, the food. living in phoenix & having grown up in Socal, this was just a sorry excuse for Mexican Food. wow. I mean, how do you screw up a quesadilla? in order to find out, go here. Powdery, taco bell style tortillas with 2 in of cheddar cheese, warmed up in the microwave, some frozen shrimp? well maybe those were actually fresh but i'm not betting on it. No grill marks on the tortilla, no onions, no stretch to the cheese which scares me about what brand of cheese it is exactly. In this economy and as crazy busy as Flagstaff was last weekend, please do not frequent this place for food. Dancing & drinks, sure, but they need to realize a major overhaul on the cuisine needs to take place. Don't even get me started on the 'chips' & 'salsa'. want some real chips & salsa? go to El Rancho grocery in N. Phx, call it a day.
Service was great but the food was horrible :( Being from SoCal, I love baja fish tacos, so I gave theirs a try. The fish was dry and the tortillas were hard. The chips n salsa tasted like tostitos from the bag and the black bean corn salsa was very bland. My margarita tasted lime pre-made Jose Cuervo and was so acidic I couldn't drink it. I feel bad writing a negative review, but feel I need to. Our waitress was very kind and sweet, so go for a beer and a smile, but not the food.
Review Source:We gave this place two tries. The second visit was worse than the first. Sticky, wobbly tables and chairs, ambivalent, lackadaisical service. Once we were finally able to find a waitress, ANY waitress, we waited for water, for drinks, for napkins ... Pet peeve is servers who set glasses down and have their fingers all over the surface from which you drink. Doesn't anyone get taught proper food and beverage handling anymore? That one is pretty basic. Went with a group yesterday. Our chicken burrito was mistakenly beef (and gross cubes of beef at that). When it was (quickly) corrected, the chicken wasn't much of an improvement. Mushy sauce and primarily beans, but a few bits of chicken. Even after our burrito was corrected, other person at our table was STILL waiting for his shrimp tacos. They took our burrito off the bill, but charged us for fish tacos that no one ordered. Overall bad service and bad food. Would rather drive thru at Taco Bell than ever eat here again. Bleh.
Review Source:Walking in, you get this electric vibe. It kind of reminds me of Squid Row. The food and service were pretty good and happy hour helped with our time there as well. The only thing I didnt like was all the staff and women there are very affectionate and inappropriate at times with each other. When you just want to eat and have a good time, you dont want to see that. Overall I know we'll go back.
Review Source:Worst Mexican food ever!!! In from las Vegas for the day and tried this place. The nachos we ordered took 10 minutes and the server noticed and brought free chips and salsa. I said cancel the nachos then and she walks away only to come back out and say ' they are just about ready, did you still want to cancel them'. She brought them out and there were about 5 pieces of steak on it. For 12 bucks! Â I ordered the street tacos and they were dry, flavorless, and sad. Only two for 10 bucks! We got the don julio fishbowl Margarita '$30 worth of tequila for $14' bullcrap! Â It had 2 shots in the entire thing. The server was quick on giving us the check, picking up the check as were still eating and prompting us for money to donate to a cancer raffle though. I won't be back.
Review Source:Best Fish Tacos (breaded style) in Flagstaff, thus far. Awesome Baja sauce! My boyfriend was disappointed by his burger, so I just go on my own when running errands. I like going at lunch time, as the price is quite affordable. Yummy margaritas as well, but I generally avoid the place late night when the college crowd comes out.
Review Source:We ended up finding this place from a business card we got from our hotel at the ramada's frontdesk. On the card they promoted the EL Gordito Burrito, so i was like cool let's check this place out!
Went inside this joint it was clean, cool neon colors, a surf shack. As soon as we got our menu, one thing in mind was the mammoth burrito "EL Gordito" Burrito.
They made this a food challenge once you finish "the fat one" burrito you win a XXL t-shirt! Â I was thinking Man v. Food but there was just no way on earth i can finish it myself, plus the rules in this food challenge was that you gotta finish it in one-self and no cheating!
So we ordered it  but we warned our server that my gf and i we'll just share it. We were not doing the food challenge, it's just for fun and we know that we would have left overs for dinner!  so that was the only thing we ordered here.
As soon as we got our order on the "EL Gordito" burrito we were like WOW!!!!!!!! that's one huge A$$ burrito!!!! our eyes popped!!! I believe it was a 6 pounder! and it was on one of those XL platters! lol
Now comes the taste test on the EL Gordito, well for one it's meaty, beefy, cheesy on top and lots of beans! the guacamole, and sour cream were on the sides. The taste is okay, not out of the ordinary, its just your regular burrito just MASSIVE!!! i was hoping some special seasoning blended in but it does'nt.
Now the attention we got inside the cantina , i saw one guy about two booths away telling one of the servers that "our they insane?!?! "that's crazy" "i've never seen anything like that before!" lmao! Â the couple behind kept turning their heads at our table, and even asked us how it taste?, can it be finish? everyone could'nt get there eye off our plate! even some people on the other side turning heads with curiousity.
We did not finish the "el gordito" burrito but there was plenty of leftovers and it was put into those to go aluminum container which filled the entire box which weight about 4 pounds of leftovers.
Overall experience was good great service and atmosphere, maybe next time we'll comeback for drinks.
last summer, my family and i stayed at a hotel in flagstaff while we were visiting the grand canyon.
i immediately liked flagstaff... in the summer, it's much cooler temperature-wise and has a hint of tahoe-meets-fun-college-town feel to it. very woodsy, little cabins, a quaint downtown area, a lot of college students running around.
after visiting the grand canyon earlier that day, we got back into flagstaff around 2pm. my mom wanted to do some shopping, my dad wanted to go have a beer. my brother had errands to run. i hate shopping (yeah i'm a girl and i hate shopping. so what). but i love beer, so it was an easy choice. i went with my dad for a refreshing beverage.
the wild, vibrant colors drew us in. i think the person who designed the interior was 2 bottles deep in tequila. its like someone transported us to to a beach bar in cancun for sping break. think pretty, young coeds in skimpy clothing serving $2 draft specials and enormous margaritas. this is the kind of place girls take up drunk, sloppy residence dancing on the bar in the later hours of the night. rowdy frat boys with beer goggles wondering who they'll take home at 2am. you know the drill.
we only stayed for a few hours, but the service was good and sports were on the TV's so we were entertained.
it was so much better than shopping.
I wouldn't call this mexican food but if they still have the two for one dinners on tuesday nights... its worth the meal. Â The best part of the two for one tuesdays was probably the half off tequila shots, you find that shot that costs $30 and do it for $15. Â
I am just kidding, I can not think of any reason to go here unless your a 21 frat/sorority type lookin to kill some brain cells.
Ate here b/c my boyfriend's nephew is a picky eater and apparently Mexican is the wildest thing he'll eat. Â For once, I wish he was pickier...
Two stars because our waitress had a cool short pincurl hair cut and provided friendly & attentive service to our table of six. Â If the only thing you can say is the waitress is cool, then yes, you know the food was lacking... Â Just read the prior reviews.
San Felipe's Cantina has some serious kinks to work out. My husband and I ate here one night back in October 2009. We spent about $60 for appetizers, drinks and our meal. We had the crab legs, taco plates, and alcoholic drinks. The restaurant was packed and the atmosphere was colorful.
At the end of January 2010 we get a random charge on our credit card from the resturant once again! After spending a ton of time with the bank and reviewing statements we were directed to call the restaurent directly. After speaking with the manager we were informed of some issue that had occured with their credit card vendor - apparently they were missing funds of about 40K.
I would think that after 4 MONTHS someone would have the consideration to call and let us know that we would be charged for the second time for our meal. Not only did we waste a ton of time researching our account, but it was very stressful to think that our cards may have been hacked into. Â The manager apologized over the phone and said that they would be calling customers soon - How about calling customers before recharging them months later?
The food was good , but I don't think that I would return to the resturant again! Luckily October's charges were removed so we only paid once for our meal.
While a recent trip to Flagstaff for Cardinals training camp a friend and I stopped in for a drink and dinner at San Felipe's.
It looked nice enough at first glance, clean and had a decent crowd for early on a Saturday night. They had some pretty good specials going on I believe, half of Mexican beer I think. Needless to say it is hard to screw up a drink order, but the food was a totally different story.
We ordered the Mexican Pizza and a couple of oyster shooters to start. The shooters were fine, most likely oysters out of a can, but tasted just fine. The Mexican pizza was supposed to have chicken on it, but all I could take were beans and a little red sauce. I would not recommend this appetizer at all. Very bland and just filled you up.
Then we saw they had Peel-and-Eat shrimp on the menu. I love Peel-and-Eat shrimp so we ordered a half pound, as we were already mostly full of the gross pizza. The waitress, whom seldom came around and was mostly rolling silverware in the corner rather than tending her tables, suggested we get it with the hot sauce on top, sounded good so we said yet. If anyone knows anything about peel-and-eat shrimp they should be served cold, better to "peel"-and eat them. These were served HOT and drenched in some chunky sauce that made them darn near impossible to peel-and-eat. However, the worst part.... one we were able to let them cool so we could eat them we noticed they hadn't been de-veined. Basically they had the poop shoot still inside. Ewww! With the shrimp being served hot we were unable to try to clean them ourselves without contaminating the entire shrimp.
We then called the manager over to ask if this was business as usual. He informed us that this was how they always served them and have never had a complaint before. He went on to try to explain that peel-and-eat shrimp were served whole and with the shell on, basically insulting my intelligent as I obviously know this since I ordered them and have eaten them many times. The restaurant I work at in college had peel-and-eat shrimp but we would cut the back and de-veined (keeping the shell intact) before serving them.
All in all not a good experience. If you are just looking for a few beers and chips and salsa have at it, but not so much on the food.
Service has always sucked here but when we stopped in a couple of weeks ago it was at a new low. Â Server was not interested in helping those of her own gender. Food was mediocre at best, fish tacos used to be such mouth watering crave material, now they are just an "eh sure" if that. One rather ridiculous peeve, is that they give you chips and salsa which is cool, but the salsa is super chunky pico like stuff that is tasty, but they serve it in the most awkward teeny dish. Â As a rule, restaurant owners and managers need to sit down and experience their place as their customers do. Â Perhaps such an experience for the San Felipe's folks would prove useful in changing some of these small annoyances. And seriously enough with the tacky little server girls who need to eat a sandwich.
Review Source:"Famous Fish Tacos" (fried)
- too much dry, chopped up cabbage on top
- shredded white cheese was also dry, cold (place on TOP of cold cabbage), AND flavorless
- tiny bit of pico on the very top that fell off as soon as you attempted a bite
+ fried mahi mahi and whatever sauce it came with was yum
- ONE piece of fried mahi mahi per taco
- rice either old or undercooked
- black beans definitely undercooked
Shrimp Tacos (fried)
+ coworker said very tastey
- he also did not touch rice or beans
Overall
+ good service
+ free chips and salsa, which was crazy spicy one bite, then not at all the next
+ good daiquiri
- waitresses dress in tiny tanks with "I tease boys" written on them
I miss this place.
They shut down after a kitchen fire, and who knows when they'll reopen.
What I will say is that the majority of the food is salty, dry, and not really worth it.
HOWEVER, their salsa is incredible, and the Holy Grail Shrimp Cocktail is worth going.
Get the shrimp, have a beer, and unlike what Katie wrote there, go before 9 at night, so you can avoid the typical frat crowds.
Service is piss poor, sit at the bar.
This is the worst "mexican" place in Flagstaff. First of all, no one should go here for food. It is a bar for the fraternity types where girls dress scandalous and dance on top of the tables at night. Plus, the music...all the hits from the 90s and 2000s that you just wish they wouldn't play on the radio anymore...like sir mix alots' baby got back or destiny's child Survivor.
Secondly, I have eaten here and can't believe that people would think their fish tacos are to die for. Their food is gross. gross. gross.
There is one thing i must do every time i visit family in Flagstaff and that is go to San Felipe's and eat fish tacos.
Here is the proper way to order them:
grilled
two tortillas (one is not sufficient)
no cabbage (unnecessary)
extra baja sauce
extra lime
now, my mom would say extra cheese as well, but i disagree.
don't worry if whatever pretty co-ed that happens to be working there at the time looks at you funny. just tip her well.
Three and half stars.
The Good: The tequila selection is one of the best around. You can also join the Wall of Shame by drinking every one of the tequilas on the menu. (There are over a hundred, so probably not in a night or two).
The Bad: The food. It isn't good. A friend of mine used to be a cook here and, to his credit, it was pretty good back then. But I've gone back many times since then, and it is definitely not good anymore.
The Indifferent: The scene is up and down. It can get a little trashy even for my taste when they start encouraging girls to get up on the bar and way too many of the wrong girls begin accepting invitations. Sometimes it's a great time, but beware of the off nights.
