By far the best Mexican food in Carson City.  Table side Guacamole is outstanding!  The atmosphere is very nice and so is the staff.  Family owned and ran with pride.

This is the best sit down Mexican food joint in Carson City. I came from Vegas and there are all kind of Michoacán's (Lindo, Viva, Etc.) which is the best Mexican food in Vegas. My wife and I went here to try it out because we herd it was good. Man I was blown away, even there table side guacamole was better than in Vegas. I had the mole poblano and was impressed that it had the bitterness that "REAL" mole is supposed to have. All in all I have to say if you like good Mexican food then this would be a great place to go if you live in Carson. The wait for the food tends to be a little longer than in normal places, but I just thing that's because they make it with love...Customer for life and official Mexican food seal of approval.

Clean, bright decor, friendly staff, and the best fish tacos!

My wife kept insisting that this is an excellent Mexican restaurant, so for her sake I tried it again.  It is not!!!  I can go anywhere for bland.  I can go anywhere for loud. I can go anywhere for rude (my plate was literally thrown at me by a server who said this is El Capitan or whatever you ordered).  They offered me a free meal if I gave there place another try.  I don't do this sort of thing because one has nowhere to go as to review.  So with all honesty I can say this establishment is horrible.

I will start at the beginning.  The WARM  free chips come with a great salsa and bean dip.  Very good.  I ordered  the fish tacos.  The fish tasted fresh but the sauce was bland bland bland.  They need to step it up.

I've only been here twice so far, but both times I was very pleased with the food and the service. I'm not usually a big Mexican food fan, but this food is excellent. The carnitas, the chipotle chicken and the shredded beef are all very, very tasty. I've never been a fan of guacamole either, but theirs is pretty damn good. I love how they cover the enchiladas in a  delicious green sauce instead of the traditional red. They also serve their chips with salsa and pinto beans (the beans also come with your entrees). To be honest, the salsa, while obviously freshly-made, is pretty bland. But the pinto beans, sprinkled with cheese, are delicious on the chips are by the spoonful. So far, the service has been friendly and pretty quick. My only real gripe would be that, on our first visit, after ordering some happy-hour margaritas, we were apparently charged full price for them. The only reason we didn't complain is that they were well-mixed and quite potent. So, we just let it go. All in all, my favorite Mexican restaurant ever, so far. Can't wait to try the rib-eye with grilled vegetables and chorizo black beans!

    Update:
Within 24 hours of me posting my original review, the owner contacted me and went out of her way to make-up for the slight problem I had on a previous visit. I can't say enough about how nice she was. Also, since our exchange, my fiancé and I went back in for dinner again. I had never had milanesa before, but it was absolutely fantastic! I will be having it again....and I would suggest you all do the same. Again, this place has great food, great service and an owner who actually seems to genuinely care about the customer. You really can't ask for much more than that.

Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Atmosphere was nice. Food was EHH. The salsa was very bland. Carnitas were nothing to be excited about. Quesadillas were decent. Everything was a little on the pricey side.

An enjoyable atmosphere with decent food. I'm gluten-free and ordered the Huevos Rancheros with cactus and chicken. Food arrived hot and smothered in American cheese, which I scooped off. The black beans had a good texture and great flavor. Not many strips of cactus, but the meal was good. The corn tortilla was crunchy and firm. The salsa is just hot enough and the chips are plentiful. Everyone in our party of 12 seemed pleased with their dish, their drinks, and the service. Location is kind of hard to find. (Behind the Salvation Army.)

I love this place!  We've been here about 6 or 7 times over the past year and the food and service have always been very consistently good.

I like to order green sauce (instead of red) on the enchiladas and they get it right every single time.  The shredded beef is tasty, tacos are wonderful with the radishes, guacamole is great, and their horchata is always a delicious beverage to go with the meal.  We also like that they always give a bowl of pinto beans in addition to the salsa that goes along with the chips.

We went again last night and the service seemed slightly less attentive than usual, but it was Saturday and pretty busy.  But all of our needs were met, so no complaints there.  I noticed diners in the tables around us were also talking about how good the food was.  This is by far the best place for Mexican food in town!

Everything you could want from a Mexican restaurant is here. From the very friendly wait staff willing to meet any special request. To fresh tableside guacamole that is as good as it gets. I came with a large group of family. So I was able to taste several of the menu items. Each one better than the last. Really looking forward to my next visit

Great food, never will return . Was spending $100 plus per week there, dad went on vacation, and daughter was in a foul overworked mood (per the bartender) had friend with us that we raved about the place, he asked for tortillas and she got a bit of attitude , the cooks put them in the.window, but she never brought them ( she looked at them several times which told me " ok , we're playing a little game" when the bill came I asked if the tortillas were on the bill since we never got them. Her reply? " No, I never brought them to you, there up there ( pointing to the warming tray)  would never give another dime to your business and I tell everyone this story! I'll bet I cost you more than a tortilla!!!

Great food. Great service.  This is the kind of mexican food that I miss when I'm not in nevada.  The special plates are very traditional but they have all the "gringo" favorites as well.  Only downside is the mariachi band that seems to make an appearance everytime I'm there but hands down best mexican food in town.

3.00 happy hour Margareta. From 4 to 6 pm  every day.  Food is good and staff is friendly.  Not very happy with chile verde, mole enchilada is good (not the best, but good). Kid loved the chicken enchilada on kids menu.

Came here for my birthday on Cinco dye Mayo with ten friends. The margaritas kept coming and the mariachi band was fun. Love the guava margerita!!! I felt taken care of and the food was yummy. I highly recommend this place.

For decent Mexican food around here, this is a good choice.

One would think that--being Nevada and all--there would be some decent Mexican eateries around here, but they are very hard to find. Probably has something to do with northwestern Nevada being closer to Oregon than Arizona.

After fruitlessly searching for years, we had resigned ourselves to mediocre Mexican food in northwestern NV.  We were in northern Carson City, and stumbled across San Marcos. It's a long way from home, but when we have a hankering for Mexican cuisine, this is our choice.

The location is a little difficult to find. It's tucked away in a sad little strip mall behind the Salvation Army. The restaurant and bar are on the dark side, without much in the way of decoration or ambiance.

We've been here three times. The service has been friendly and quick every time. The food is very good, and the wait times are short. The first time there, I ordered the Pollo con Nopales and was impressed with the richness and complexity of the flavor. The other times I ordered the chile rellenos and one of the camarones specials. Both times, the meals were tasty. It's easy to mess up a chile relleno, but San Marcos makes good ones: not soggy nor rubbery. The batter was cooked well. All three times, the tortilla chips were fresh, not stale at all. The guacamole was prepared by the server at the table-side, where the diners get to dictate the recipe from a wide collection of ingredients available on the tray. I was surprised and pleased at the flavor and quality.  At one point, the owner came out and made sure everything was satisfactory, and we chatted with him about the restaurant, the food, and his past stint working for Harrah's up at the Lake.

We don't drink when we have to drive, so I can't offer any insights to the bar.

Food to go with the co-workers.  Ok, the lower star rating is for service this time.  Yeah, I was indecisive, so shoot me!  I called and placed order for 7 people, the food was delicious as usual.  The 7th person was on his way in and texted "dont get me the fish tacos" so I called quickly and cancelled that part of the order.  Then the 7th person called and told me what he wanted.  Normally I'd have thrown bricks, but it was the boss and he was paying so I called back.  THREE CALLS in less than 10 minutes, I'm a nuisance right?  I know this, dont need to be reminded but alas the snippy girl who answered the phone was all "This is excessive, were now going to have to start pushing your orders our one at a time", like I was going to call again?  Like they were having to make a special order or something?  Come on, I had just ordered 100$ worth of food!  She was really REALLY snippy.  I'd use the word bitchy but I don't know if I can do that here.  I really was disturbed by her attitude, I may not eat there again.

My friend introduced me to this place 3 months ago and I'm sad I didn't find it earlier. For sit-down Mexican food in Carson City, this is the place I go from now on. Delicious food at a reasonable price and always a fun atmosphere with friendly staff. Try the table side, custom-made Guacamole!

I haven't been in here for a real long time, cause my experience with the food last time. But I figured, maybe its still OK for the tableside made guac. and cadillac margaritas. Our first cadillac marg.s were made by the owner, he did a good job...yum tasty. We then ordered the guacumole. BUt it was made by one of the servers....not good. The owner makes it way better, not enough avacado comparded to the salsa, the spices were all wrong, I mean it wasn't trash or anything but not the great stuff Elvarro makes (I think thats his name). But worse , on our second round of drinks, the same server made them, geeze like no alcohol kick at all and tast was just not good. If you ever come for drinks or guac...make sure only the owners makes it! I'm not chancing this place any more.

I will have to come back on a day that is not cinco de mayo... The lady sitting next to me kept telling me they were normally more attentive and that they were just too busy! I would have to agree after being in the business for awhile now, there were not enough people working for the crowd... With that aside, the food was really good and decently priced :)
I will be back for their happy hour and to try some different food! I look forward to being able to update this review with a more positive one

My wife and I ate here on a Saturday afternoon and were very pleased. Great owner who is proud of his place and it shows in the food, cocktails and vibe. The table side guacamole is killer and the Fish tacos I had and Carnitas tacos my wife had were superb. A must try. We'll be back!

San Marcos Grill is a great mix of authentic Mexican food with good atmosphere.  These folks do it right.  They have a good bar, and Negra Modelo ON TAP.  If you don't understand what that means, then you should go down there and order a taco and a beer, because it's perfectly delicious!  The service has always been good for us,  the food always tasty and creative.  The guacamole is made table side, and the cotija salad is something everyone should try!  Folks who think that the other Mexican joint on Carson St. is better, just don't understand Mexican food.  Simple as that.

Updating the review of San Marcos. I may have been a bit harsh on the overall judging of this place. It's just that I've been on the receiving end of so much blatant terrible service that it's hard to see past it. I can honestly say the food is pretty darn good. But truly, they've lost my order twice on my lunch break, resulting in me either A. not getting my food by the time i had to leave, or B. getting someone else's food and only finding it out when i got back to work. They've also lost my debit card, leaving me stranded on a weekend without access to my bank account, and then offered to charge it when and if they found it for a petty thirteen dollar tab.
Sigh,,,  I really want to give this place four stars for genuinely good food, and hands down the best iced tea in town, but I just can't get over the terrible, uncaring service I've received almost every time I've been in here.

After an excellent second visit to this restaurant I decided to write a review that is well-earned, although I noticed some reviews aren't as complimentary. Maybe we just went on two good nights, but I will never again waste my time at Mi Casa II  ( Sorry guys, but making a margarita with wine  just ruins my whole experience). Aside from the  most extensive list of tequilas I've ever  seen comprised of Reposado, Anejo, ect. listed by type, the food is delicious!!! The tableside guacamole is fresh and prepared according to your  specifications, the chips are delivered hot and crisp accompanied by mild salsa and pinto beans topped with cotija cheese and the entrees are as good as I've ever eaten. We have tried the grilled fish tacos served with radish slices (sounds odd but pretty authentic and surprisingly good change of texture and taste), the shredded beef burrito served enchilada-style, asada tacos and don't skip the spinach-artichoke dip...it's worth it!
The service was very friendly and prompt- there was one other table occupied when we showed up but several more were taken by the time we finished and the service never faltered.
I can only hope that San Marcos Grill continues to excell, since the other mexican restaurants in Carson are not even close in service, friendliness and above all quality of fresh ingredients.

I'm going to have to agree with Kara on this one. The place has really gone downhill. You don't see it visually but taste wise the food is just not as good as it was. Maybe a different cook? It just tast like every other generic Mexican place in town. Margaritas are still good a $8 a pop, but I won't eat the food any more.

It was a big night for us.

The new freeway section was open, and we jumped on and sailed half-way across Carson City in no time- IT WAS SO DREAMY. But here we were on the opposite side of town- now what? Run right home to some Lean Cuisine or see what the night would bring?

So, we stopped at the San Marcos Grill.

This was some good food here. I had the steak fajitas which were done perfectly in every way. Absolutely flawless, and I'll fight any man who says different.

The tortillas seemed a little stale and hard and crackly around the edges. I managed to get past that.

Beer glass was kept full. We had to sit a long time with a table full of dirty dishes, though. Not too pleased with that. Some friends of ours came in and mentioned the guacamole made at your table so it's apparently somewhat famous.

Price seemed reasonable. Three fajitas and three drinks for about $45. I can live with that.

The trip home (on the other side of the new freeway) was just as dreamy. Ah, Carson City. It doesn't take much to entertain me.

if you have the money this would be the best mexican restaurant to go to. they offer salsa and chips and a small bowl of beans. spend a little more and they will make guacamole dip at your table to your liking. keep your kids away from the chicken fingers from the kids meal and don't expect fast service. if you want great taste and a great price i recommend michoacan taqueria.

I like to find places off the beaten path as they are usually better.  San Marcos has a delicious veggie burrito with seasoned grilled vegetables.  Service is always on point.  Food falls between a 3 and 4 for me.  Had churros once that didn't do it for me.  Perhaps i was too full!  Clean and festive dining area.

This is a new place for me.  I noticed they opened up a while ago, but I haven't tried them until now.

When I walked in, I felt like I was truly in a restaurant in mexico, except this place was nice and clean.  It is decorated very well and they play mexican background music.

The served me tortilla chips with salsa and beans to dip them in.  The beans had some sort of awesome cheese on them.  The salsa wasn't hot at all, so don't be afraid if spicy isn't your thing.

I had chicken flautas which were great.  They definately used fresh, high quality ingredients.  I normally don't like mexican rice, but their's was pretty good.

Service was quick, so you could definately have lunch within an hour there.

I would definately go back, and wouldn't be afraid to take clients there as well.

They also have a happy hour, but as it was my lunch break, i could not partake.  $2 well and margaritas from 4 to 6 pm.
