WORST service I have had in years. 3 bartenders behind a relatively small bar, small - decent crowd ( plenty of walking room and stools) and my whole party was upset by how long it took to get service. I even went ahead and tipped the bartender $10.00 up front in cash hoping it would increase our ability to get a drink. My friends started ordering 2 at a time because the wait was so ridiculous considering there where 3 bartenders and a minimal crowd. We left and took our business else where. I've seen much better service in much more crowded bars with a smaller staff.
Review Source:The Screaming Rooster has always come up in conversation with friends, but I never took the initiative to actually visit it, that is until Friday night. A friend of a friend was playing an acoustic set that night so said friend and I decided to give it a go.
The food selection was pretty typical of a bar. Burgers, various sandwiches, wraps, salads, wings and other typical bar fried foods. I'm rather indecisive when ordering from a restaurant I'm unfamiliar with, so I looked over the menu for a solid 5-10 minutes. Typically I try to choose something that is unique to that eatery. I scanned the menu, but nothing unique caught my eye so I decided to play it safe and order a 1/2 lb. bacon cheeseburger. The burger came with bacon (obviously), pepper jack cheese and a healthy amount of lettuce, tomato and red onion. I'd say I didn't even use half of the lettuce or red onion they had provided me and I don't know anyone who would need (or want) to use the amount they provided me with. The burger also came with hand cut potato chips. The potato chips were seasoned perfectly and were fresh out of the fryer. I also ordered a dip, I believe it was dill, that gave the potato chips a little kick to them.
After the meal my taste buds and stomach were satisfied. I was thoroughly stuffed as well, although that may have been because by the time I finished it was 9 PM and that was my first meal of the day.
They didn't seem to have a huge selection of beers, so if you're looking for a unique selection I recommend walking a block over to the Buckeye Beer Engine. I'm not much of a beer connoisseur so when I saw they had Labatt Blue on tap on knew what I would be drinking for the duration of that evening.
There was an ample amount of seating between the bar, booths (3) and high top tables. They also had a large chalkboard that had the dates listed for upcoming bands/acts. It looked as if they had something booked for the next couple months every Friday or Saturday.
The atmosphere was very laid back. It was mostly a 20's something crowd but there were a few older gentlemen that were watching the St. Edwards state championship football game, although they left shortly after the game was over. The bartenders were prompt and had a good sense of humor. I had been ordering from the same bartender all night, at one point I ordered from the other and was quickly called a traitor.
I definitely recommend The Screaming Rooster if you're looking for a simple and inexpensive meal and a few cold ones to wash it down with.
Six years ago I kicked cigarettes cold turkey
I haven't had a drink in nearly a decade, and I've never looked back.
Chicken wings though, that's a tough one. Â
There's something about gnawing the saucy deep-fried goodness off the tiny little bones that scratches an itch in my reptile brain. Â I'm not proud of it, but that's the way it is. Â So when the urge strikes I need to take care of it or else.
When I lived a bit further west, I had some reliable sources for wings. Â I knew where I could get them at a decent price, bring them home, and go captain caveman on the steaming pile of bbq bird parts. Â Since moving to Lakewood, I have been searching for a replacement, which had eluded me until I had the good sense to call the Screaming Rooster and place an order. Â
The wings were largish, meaty and cooked perfectly. Â The bbq sauce was excellent. Â At $13 for two dozen, the price was right too. Â I have found my go to place for wings in Lakewood, and that makes me and my reptile brain happy.
This is a really nice bar to go to. I have fully embraced the fact that my days of Detroit Ave bars in Lakewood have come to a close. I just can't deal with all of the nonsense that comes with going to those hell holes. I have graduated to Madison bars. Most of my favorite bars on Madison are around W 140th area and east of that, but this is a great place to go on the west end of Madison.
Review Source:As far as dive bars go, this is a pretty good one. That's my favorite place about Lakewood -- no matter where you are, you're always just a five minute walk from a dive bar with cheap drinks and pretty darn good food.
The Rooster would be my dive, as it's the closest "dive" within walking distance. There's always a good drink special, and on lots of nights there's live music that's not playing just to hurt the thirty and over crowd's ears. Often times it's a bit more jazzy than hard rocky, and it makes it a good place.
The food isn't spectacular, but, when you've gotta eat, it's pretty good. Just standard pub fare, with lots of burgers and sandwiches and fried foods galore, perfect for a larger man such as m'self.
I wouldn't call the Screaming Rooster a destination or anything, but, it's homey. The staff is always kind and always helpful. They've got a good menu of craft beers, and make a pretty strong vodka cranberry. If you're looking for a spot to waste away a night and you can't make it to Margaritaville, The Rooster's a good spot for that.
