Our friends who live in San Clemente took us here the first day we arrived. Â It had a nice large patio that caught the ocean breeze and it was covered from the July sun. Â We were able to bring our dog, but he had to be outside the fence; that was the only down fall. Â The HH beers were pretty cheap, $3 for a craft pint, and the bruschetta and sausage pizza were hits off he appetizer menu. Â When you're done shopping in SC, swing by Selma's to unwind. Â We would have tried dinner but had to bounce to another restaurant!
Review Source:Been to this place a couple times for salad. Â Have yet to try the deep dish pizza, but it looks delicious.
For starters we ordered the  Mediterranean flat bread appetizer, which is awesome!  it comes with two "dips" a artichoke dip and a zesty marinara.  The artichoke dip rocks....in fact I finished what was left with a spoon!
The salads are quite good and you leave there feeling full. Â The salads come in two sizes and are accompanied by a tasty little biscuit. Â On both visits I enjoyed the BBQ chopped salad, but instead of the BBQ ranch dressing I opted for the Santa Fe ranch dressing. Â
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who enjoys a good healthy, chocked full of goodies salad!
Next visit - deep dish pizza!
I came here last week with my boyfriend for the first time. The pizza was good (we just got a deep dish pepperoni pizza with olives and peppers) and so was the side salad. I was actually really impressed with the service - that was the best part of the experience. I don't remember our waitresses name but she was really sweet, friendly, and attentive. I'm deducting a star because the pizza wasn't amazing - but it was decent. Great service though!
Review Source:Walked in on a Sunday afternoon 1.20 ish..No reception or hostess after 3 or 4 mins so we sat ourselves..Sat at an outside "patio" table, nobody around from the staff. Finally flagged down a bus boy who "found" a waiter. "Mmmmm---gotta check to see if it is Ok to let you sit there"...Hellooooo, you aren't busy--there are empty tables....Got the bus boy to hand me the table cleaning rag... Cleaned my own table because it was still sticky.
Waiter shows up took our drink and main course order. Beer came out in a semi slow acceptable time..Took 28 minutes--after the drinks were served for a pizza and a Santa Fe salad.. ( They must have had to send out for it)
Oh yes it is the football season and the staff is engrossed with the games..There was a lot of cheering from the wait staff..There are a lot of TV's.
Pizza shows up--they are a pizza restaurant. "May I have some garlic powder and oregano.?? Five minutes later the waiter said they don't have shakers of spices so he brought me minced ice cold garlic and oregano in two small plastic cups..good try--hey you serve pizza--people put that stuff on pizza
Chased  down for the check,  --paid and left..Wife and I said as we left "Are they kidding?"
Friday lunch at this joint was marginally better---took ten minutes to find the waitress with the check...Hey people have to get back to work..she looked shocked..
Bottom line--this place is for tourists and people who want to try waiting on tables or working in a restaurant, while filling in the time before Hollywood calls.. Unorganized, slow, mediocre food...As it has been summed up in other reviews. "Bad service and mediocre food."
Extra star is for the decent beer on tap.
This is a sad, sad review. Â I'll tell you why. Â My hubby and I really enjoyed this pizza since moving to San Clemente, but we did think that it was way overpriced. Â After just having another baby and a 2 1/2 year old already in tow, one of our very few luxuries anymore is on ordering out. Â Well, we don't have a lot of money, so imagine our surprise when the woman as tonight's "manager" harassed my husband and patronized him over the phone! Â All, because their hostess pulled up an incorrect previous order on our record. Â When we tried to correct the matter, she told us they in no way could remake it. Â But that wasn't the worst part! Â She proceeded to tell my husband to "Oh my God, calm down", while she talked over him. Â She suggested that after her hostess made a mistake, that we should pay for 2 pizzas instead of one. Â Unbelievable!!!! Â Crappiest customer service ever! Â What owner would put a brainless, mouthy 20-something in charge of their precious restaurant? Â Not smart; they just lost out on hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in business, as we plan on staying in San Clemente for life.
****An addendum to this review. Â The Head Mgr. called to apologize today and gave us a meal on the house. Â So, at least they are trying to make improvements.*******
Good food, bad service!
My family and I have been going to Selma's for a few years now because they LOVE the pizza. Â I like the pizza too, but prefer healthier fare so I'm not a huge fan of this place and the service we got here last weekend even made me less of a fan. Â
We sat down for a late afternoon lunch last Sunday around 3pm and half the restaurant was empty. Â We placed our order for drinks and app only to sit there for a half hour AND no app was delivered. Â Our waitress was nowhere to be seen so we flagged down the hostess who later relayed to us that our waitress forgot to put in our order. Â They apologized and took the app off our bill, and delivered after it after our meal was served, which needless to say defeated the purpose of ordering the app in the first place.
There are some great eateries on Ave Del Mar and Selma's is no exception. Â To boot they have daily happy hour specials that range from $5.00 appetizers to 1/2 off bottles of wine. Offering indoor and outdoor seating of the dark wooden booth/table and chair variety it has the atmosphere of a great pizza joint.
The cornerstone of the menu at Selma's is deep dish, Chicago style pizza. Â Each one comes served in a cast iron dish and can be upgraded to even a "deeper" dish for some extra cash. Â You can either build your own or select from a list of specialty pizzas. Â The pizza.....is.....really friggin good. Â We had the "Smoking Inferno," meat and jalepenos amongst sauce and cheese and the "Well-appointed Pesto", which is a lighter pizza (as if that really existed at Selma's) with pesto sauce topped with chicken and fresh veggies. Both were outstanding. Â
Prices are very reasonable and considering the left overs accounted for lunch the next day it was a steal. Â FYI...their pizza is just as good cold as it is out of the oven.
I really hate complaining about waiters, but he was among the worst we have ever had. Â
1. Â He forgot we were there after initially greeting us. Â For at least 10 minutes.
2. Â When he did remember we were there, he took our drink orders and never came back.
3. Â That's a lie, he did come back, and took our drink and food order at the same time.
4. Â He remembered to put in our food order (a plus) but only after he walked by MUCH later and realized we still didn't even have drinks (minus).
5. Â He didn't ask me what side I wanted so when he brought us our food I had a very small amount of every side known to man.
6. Â DH's food was mediocre at best (and his was the pizza... at a pizza place). Â My sandwich WAS really good, and the prices were good.
So, one star for pretty much everything except:
1. Â Location is GREAT, so that got you 2.
2. Â Prices were really good, so that got you 2.
3. Â My food was good, so that got you 2.
Maybe with better wait staff we would have had a better time. Â Minus the maybe.
Two or three stars for service, but a hearty five for the pizza when it finally arrived! We had a sweet but inexperienced server who was nice enough; but the front-of-house staff were overworked and the more experienced servers seemed distracted and... well, not exactly warm & fuzzy.
Pizza took a generous half an hour to arrive after we ordered. But when it arrived - wowzers! What an experience. I am a garlic girl, and we ordered the white pizza, White Sox: a largely East-Coast phenomenon, if you haven't already had the privilege, made with mozzarella, ricotta and no marinara - and lots of garlic.
The Selma's crust is truly outstanding. While this style may be more common further East, it's unlike most pizza you'll find in this neck of the woods: almost buttery in taste and texture, with a more pie-like consistency and thick, full, rich toppings, served on a metal deep dish that's set on the table atop a heavy cast-iron stand. Together with a pint of Selma's house-brewed Honey Blonde, I quickly forgave all my minor woes about the service to savor the taste experience. Heavenly. Now just work on that staffing issue, Selma, and you might even be in the running to compete with Pizza Port...
Selma's in San Clemente has been an option for dinner whenever we're in town there. Â The service has been quite good, they sometimes give us a complimentary option of adding tomatoes to the pizza, but other than a couple of hiccups with drink orders, but it's no big deal. Â We come here for the pizza!
Review Source:Sweet jesus their pizza is amazing! Keep in mind that this is coming from an avid pizza/pasta loving-fan. I ordered the deep dish BBQ chicken pizza and it was just to die for. I think we ordered some wings that were bomb aswell. The food may take a little while to get out, but it was well worth the wait. It kinda reminds me of a smaller, more beachy version of BJ's. I live a good 60-80 miles away from San Clemente but I may consider returning someday. Our waitier was a nice young dude, and the atmosphere is nice. Highly recommended for their pizza!
Review Source:I went here for a friend's birthday and was pretty impressed. Â We had a group of 8 which they set up a nice big table for (though, they originally did try to cram us into a booth - they were very cool about changing it to a table when we asked). Â We had several appetizers, all of which were wonderful. Â Fried cheese, sauteed mushrooms, and (i think) garlic bread. Â Delicious! Â Our main dishes were really good too. Â Almost everyone had a pizza but I had pasta - both were tasty. Â The service was good as well. Â This is a great place for groups.
Review Source:Selma's is our FAVORITE restaurant in San Clemente. All of their salads rock, my son always enjoys the pizzas or cheese boats. The sandwiches are pretty good too. This is our restaurant for bringing visitors to.
During my last two visits I had the Sam-zone and the buffalo pizza. The pizza was the bomb. I would order it again every time if I didn't want to know what else they have! The sam-zone was very good too, I asked for mine with blackened chicken and spinach... but they forgot the spinach. The server brought me a side salad on the house so I could still have my veggies. Even tho there was no spinach in it, it was GUD.
Nice pizza joint on the main shopping street in San Clemente, Del Mar. It's close to original Chicago-style pizza but not as thick. We usually order the standard pepperoni with green peppers although they have several specialties plus create-your-own options. Seating is limited in the dining room so make sure your party has less than 6 people or you will be sharing a couple of tables.
Review Source:Good food , good Service.. Happy hour specials are good..
Calzones are good..Appetizers are excellent...Never had a bad dish here..
Have only tried the Pizza once ...It was ok...Nice place to sit and relax on the patio and watch the people walk by while you drink a Heffe Weiss..
We keep going back.....
Four of us went downtown looking for a place to eat that caught our eye. After we passed a few crowded places, a few overly priced places, a few too trendy for our style places, we came across Selma's.
I like this place....Good food, right price, fun atmosphere. I am excited to come here for the happy hour specials.....
I forget what they are...but know its a deal!
Grade: A
Chicago-style pizza. It was pretty darn good. We got the works. Crust was nicely done and the deep dish pizza was full of toppings. Not too salty (which happens a lot with supremes/the works). Loved the fresh tomatoes topping too! A lot of times, deep dishes are very filling but we didn't feel overly stuffed. We ordered ours as take-out.
We plan to come back to try out their other dishes. They have gluten-free and wheat pastas for those with specialized diets.
Does it compare to pizza in Chicago? No, but it's a very decent version of it.
Wow so this place is sooooo good!!!!!!!!!
Our family had the White Sox Pizza and it was soooo good! The crust is amazing!!!!!!!!! Never had a pizza like this before and I would drive 30 to eat there!
There Tangerine Beer is super good too!! And my friends dad loved their blonde beer.
Everyone liked there food and service was good!
Definitely coming back!
this place is EXACTLY like BJ's. Â it was good deep dish, but not quite the Chicago style I've had in Chicago. Â It wasn't quite as thick and doughy as I like my deep dish to be. Â But it was good pizza. Â And I was totally delighted to see that they had toasted ravioli on the menu but was completely disappointed. Â I guess I've only had St.Louis style so I was a little thrown off by the cheese in the middle instead of beef. Â it tasted ok but not as good as I've had else where.
they had tons of other options on the menu but only had the meathead pizza and ravioli. Â they had lots of pasta and salad choices as well.
I would eat there every day if it didn't mean I'd wind up being 300 lbs. Â
Their pizza (deep dish) is pretty much the best I've had in a long time. Â Their ceasar salad is pretty good, and I'm picky about salads too. Â We have yet to get anything from there that we didn't eat right up. Â
P.S. Their wings totally satisfied my pregnancy cravings, YUMMY!
Selma's staff went out of their way to make sure my meal was gluten free. They were knowledgeable about gluten and made sure they changed their gloves and used new veggies on my gluten free crust. They even had a gluten free beer. It was awesome to eat pizza AND have a beer.
Thanks Selma's
Mama Mia, pizza magnifica!! Â San Clemente has four Italian/pizza places rated at 4 yelps stars or higher including very causual sports bar-like Selma's. Actually two are yelp-rated 4-plus. Will have to check them out when I'm again in this seaside town of the former Western White House.
Lucky day, a friend and I stumbled in here after checking out the San Clemente Farmer's Market. Â It would've been cool to sit and people watch on the small patio. But a party of 15 put four tables together and hogged the patio space. Â Gotta be a great way to people and dog watch on a warm Sunday afternoon..
There were signs on the door touting all the awards their pizza had won. Â Brag, brag, brag -but why not? But neither of us were in a pizza mood. Fuggetabout it. Still the pizzas looked exactly like the ones I saw in several downtown Chi-town pizzerias when I was there. The dough was tall, with immense amounts of cheese and toppings. You could hear the crunching and munching of the pizza gobblers next to us. Â It smelled tomatoey, garlicky, and lickety good. Instead wanted to check out their pastas. Â I ordered the "extreme' spaghetti", it was supposed to taste extremely good, which it was. Â It was a good deal for $8.75. Â The sauce was dense, heavy with a tomato flavor enhanced by lots of onion, garlic, and a little oregano with a little sweetness. Â It came with a decent slice of their garlic bread. Â Excellent.
My friend ordered a side salad ($2.79) and cheese ravioli with the same meat sauce I had ($11.00). Â Very good as well. The pasta was al dente and also came with garlic bread. The salad was made with lettuce with garbanzo beans, soft but cruncy garlicky croutouns and diced tomatoes.
Service was attentive but a little slow. Â The place was at capacity, though on a Sunday. Â Very good with refills but not picking up dirty plates. Our waiter wasn't as zippy as the others. With four wide screen TV's, you could keep up with your favorite NFL teams or whatever sports they feature on ESPN and other channels. But yes, I'd come here again.
This review is for the Smokin' Inferno Pizza.
Thick baked crust gives a backbone to a sizeable inch deep layer of toppings...sausage, pepperoni, jalapenos, cheese and roma tomatoes...I'm zoning out just thinking about it.
A medium is large enough to feed a family of four, or me and my boyfriend who has the neverending story curse in regards to his hunger.
We only order to go - because when you're eating that much food, you a) don't want people to watch you and b) don't want wait if you are that hungry.
Oh, and the salads are good too. But seriously, salads at a pizza place don't mean too much. It's a pizza place.
Selma's is a locally-owned restaurant with just one other location in Rancho Santa Margarita, but offers a family restaurant atmosphere similar to the larger chains.
They have booth seating in a nice, large, colorful interior dining room and a nice patio outdoor seating if you want to people watch on Del Mar.
The menu is very reasonably priced. Â We've had lunch a few times, and the salads are under $8 and offers very fresh ingredients served up in a healthy portion of food. Â The rolls are served warm and are soft almost like pizza dough.
Does not swing towards the gourmet side of things, but definitely a nice place to go for a good meal and is excellent for families.
I like this deep dish pizza and the restaurant aesthetics. Â The location is on a cozy portion of Del Mar St. in San Clemente, and has a nice outdoor seating area to soak in the outdoors and people watch.
The lunch specials are reasonable, about $7 for entree, salad, and bread. Â The specialty salads are also tasty, I like the Asian. Â The dessert was delicious and huge.
This restaurant offers good value and is a safe bet for someone who wants a good meal at a "non-chain" establishment.
I AM IN LOVE!!! We just moved to San Clemente and decided to start trying new restaurants. This place reminds me of BJ's but waaaaay better. My bf and i both got the lunch specials. I got the 1/2 sandwich and salad. I got the bbq chicken sandwhich panini style. Mind you I am NOT a grilled sandwich person but i decided to give it a whirl and i am sooo glad i did. The bun was not super crunchy it was just perfect and had a ton of sauce on it. The salad dressings are amazing! My bf got the personal pizza with salad and it was super good too! We couldnt decide on what type of beer to get so our waiter brought us samples of each beer and we each got our own. It was a really enjoyable atmosphere on the patio overlooking Del Mar. We stayed for about 2 hrs or so. They had fun little trivia on the tables as well (who knew my bf was so smart!!!).
This is a must!
As far as deep dish pizza goes, Selma's is definitely not at the top of my list. Â The pizza wasn't terrible or anything, it just doesn't really stand out as being worthy of a return trip.
The service was on point, and very friendly so no complaints there.
Bottom Line:  Not a bad experience, but I've definitely had better deep dish.  I'll be giving Selma's another try, albeit for something other than their deep dish.
I've recently fallen in love with San Clemente in general. Â It's nowhere near as crowded as other tourist-y beach cities (ahem, Huntington), and it's a lot cleaner.
Yes, the atmosphere is a lot like BJ's, but oh man, their food is amazing! Â Our server was really friendly.
I know this place is known for pizza, but I ordered a sandwich because I didn't have an appetite big enough for a massive pizza. If I remember correctly, it's called the "Mad Cow Special", panini-style. It's like a philly cheese steak sandwich with peppers and mushrooms, and it was bursting with flavor..! It came with a dip (kind of like the dip that comes with a French dip sandwich), potato chips seasoned with garlic salt, and a small side of pasta salad. Everything on my plate was delicious! One of my friends ordered the baked penne.. and the sauce for the pasta was also bursting with flavor. Pasta was not overcooked at all. The 5 of us left with happy stomachs.
And I like their mints, too! Haha.
It's awesome here!! They have something for everyone. It's a lot like BJ's... with the deep-dish pizzas and overall atmosphere. It's a great hometown hangout and the service is awesome. We usually get the same waitress every time and she's great. Everyone there has a really nice attitude. They offer outside dining which is nice because it's right on Del Mar and on weekends, it's cool nightlife...haha.
They have a really good dessert selection and a real high-energy vibe.
After a nice walk down to San Clemente pier, I thought San Clemente pier was just very awesome-great, no, stellar- place to hang out because 1) there aren't bazillion tourists around, like Huntington or Laguna 2) the view of the ocean is amazing as you walk down to the pier 3) it's quiet 4) there are a handful of good restaurants around this area 5) it's fairly secluded... and a great date spot in general.
I loved it. I went with one of my gal friends and although the sky was grey, and a bit windy, this small avenue with a mellow, laid-back pier made it perfect. I don't gush that much about certain places but this place was really, really nice. Oh, oops, I should talk about the pizza place!
When you walk in, you'll notice there's a BJ's feel, with the dim lights and decor. The pizza tastes like BJ's, except I think Selma's is more delicious, deep-dish, flavorful pizza! After a bite of the BBQ pizza, I thought: this is how a BBQ pizza is supposed to taste like. The dim lights give this place a casual feel. It feels comfortable here. And we were both hungry so we scarfed down our soup/salad (both very good and fresh) as well.
I highly recommend.
