Had a bad experience here, as an artist. Â Was scheduled to play. Â Showed up, asked if they had a PA. They did. Â When it was time to play, when I attempted to plug my guitar, they told they would not plug in instruments because of a bad experience they had. Â Fair enough. Â I asked to play without being plugged in. Â AFter about half hour my mic was turned off in the middle of my set because I was being too "obscure." chuckle.
The bartender told me patrons were leaving. Â When I looked around, they were all still there, which I pointed out, and then asked the bar if they were being abused. Â They confirmed that it was a good time. Â After the bartender turned me back on, I was pretty much over it, and left. Â The Owner then emailed me, cancelling my next gig for bailing. Â I explained to him what happened, he quaintly apologized, but offered no amend, had already booked my slot. Guess playing bars in general is a gamble, and sometimes you gotta know before you go.
Amazing that Vinyl DJ's break out that expensive stuff to please my drinking and socializing experience! Â Very Entertaining, with lot's of TV's, Movies, and funky visuals! Â It look's like a lot of starting band's perform their when it's not Kariokie night, or Vinyl night. Â Friendly bartender's with drink specials.
Review Source:Popped in her after having some din-din at Georges (yum!) across the street.
This was my first time in here as its not in my hood and I don't usually stray too far from home especially on school nights. I tend to be late for class and get sent to the principles office. But what the heck. After a few glasses of wine with dinner I figured maybe a little time in detention or a couple of swats that it might be worth risking it.
I still love to rock out in the car and occasionally sing in the shower too so why not share with friends! Â I'm normally not one for karaoke but thought no one knows me here what the heck. If you heard me sing you'd sorely understand. As in sore ears.
The Shanghai'd Room is a cool little divey place that seems like it popped out of a 70's kung fu movie. From the lights strung across the parking lot with the paper lanterns to the TV inside with the bad Asian movies with the funny as hell subtitles. Very nice touch! Cant repeat the subtitles here but wish I had a copy! The room has a very70's Chinatown dive bar feel to it. Dark and mysterious with an Asian flair http://www.yelp.com/biz_…

They only have beer, wine and wine concoctions. But that was fine with me I like beer it makes the words flow better when its your time to sing. The DJ was a cool guy and he has a huge catalog of jams. I was planning on doing a The Sugar Hill Gang's Rappers Delight . "1 2 3 4 come on girls get on the floor, come alive 'yall give me what ya got 'cause I'm guaranteed to make you rock!" " I'm singing on n n on an on n n the beat don't stop till the break of dawn" http://www.youtube.com/w…
Guess I didn't have enough liquid courage 'cause I Jumped in on a Rolling Stones duet with homeboy Dan instead. Just like Axl & Mick LOL http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
Also we met this girl out front, talk about a cold fish! http://www.yelp.com/biz_…
They got a smokers lounge out back with plenty of seating and lots of room inside to get your party on. So feel like singing or just chillin'? Either way give them a spin for a fun night out.
I'd come back.
Hai-yaaa!!! This place just makes me want to say Haiiii-yaaa, going kung fu on people!! The reason being is that they have such cute lanterns all around, oooh soo pretty, I can look at it for a long time!! Anyways, enough of the decor, the place is pretty relaxing to hang out listen to live music, and grab a few drinks!! Â It kind of looks like those old 70 bars, but with a Shanghai twist to it, a little weird, but hey whatever tickles your pickle right?!?!
Located on Beach and Heil, about 5-10 minutes (depending how fast you drive) to the beach. Â Drinks were pretty strong, none of those weaksauce cheappy drinks that you can find at other places, bartenders are pretty cool also. Â Also not too expensive for drinks too. Â Looks great, great vibe, nice new place that I experienced, will come back!!
You know how I know I am way over the hill? Cuz I have never heard of this tiny too cool bar before. Some of my young Yelp buds and I finished up at Georges Greek across the street and Mel M piped up. "Hey lets do karaoke!"
Yep, karaoke every Monday night hosted by the most friendly KJ ever. Dude can sing sweet as a bird too. I hate to call this a dive bar, as it's eclectic décor is well done, and the bar and even the men's room are all super tidy and clean. The smokers patio out back was also set up for the smokers comfort with plenty of seating and also spotless. They definitely take pride in providing a comfortable atmosphere in which to imbibe.
Well only if you enjoy imbibing without liquor. Only a beer and wine license, but they get creative with that with shochu cocktails and sangria, and lots of imports too. The bartender was also super friendly, and one of the TV's had on an Asian movie with some hilarious risqué subtitles. Somebody has a great sense of humor here.
Supposedly they also offer live bands of various sorts. Not exactly my part of HB, nor my age demo, but whenever the youngins have this on the nights agenda, this old guy will gladly make a redo.
The bar is tiny but I love the atmosphere! Â The decorations look really nice (great for instagram posts to make your friends jealous), and the bartenders are really friendly. Â It's surprising how a nice bartender can really make the experience that much better. Â I really like the different kinds of drinks they offer there, too. Â The place is kind of small, though, but it doesn't get too crowded when there is no live band performing.
Review Source:Cool, friendly bartenders inside a small, cozy bar on Beach Blvd. near the 405. The bands I saw were great and different from your run-of-the-mill rock stuff, but that was probably just the particular night. I saw they do Karaoke on Mondays. Their jukebox also apparently can take pictures and upload them to Facebook. Oh, boy. What hot messes have gone down in front of that machine? Either way, there's a decent selection of beer and the rest of the drink selection consists of wine or shochu/sake shots or mixers. I had the fruit mojito and it was really tasty, but I couldn't even get buzzed off of four and a glass of Pyramid Hef... although, that might just be my tolerance as of late. Anyways, it's a cool little bar with chill folks and workers. If I lived closer, I'd probably be around more often to grab a couple of beers. I also like their signage, which often points out that if you are clearly too drunk (or on crack, or starting a fight), they will escort you out with or without the aid of police.
Review Source:Just an update, I wish they had a full liquor bar..or is at least working on stocking up. I don't remember what they had, I think it was just rum and soju? c'mon at least have some sort of whiskey! The scene is definitely different each night. Granted I came in a bit early (late 8ish, early 9ish) but it was just a bunch of dudes hanging at the bar. Anyways, i'll still come here if I were in the area, the bartenders are super friendly.
Also, I would lose the smoke machine.
Love the shanghai'd room. Great lil dive bar in Huntington Beach. Â Chinese Opium Den themed decor. Lots if flat screen tvs and a projector playing Cult Classics and B movies. They have a small selection of asian alcohol, sake, and a pot of Sangria along with a large selection of Beers. If you like beer this is the spot. Juke box, DJs and a few bands weekly. The regulars bartenders and DJs are all polite friendly and cool. Small but when you want somewhere to just chill its perfect. Drink specials, Food Menu from the pizza shop next door til ten. Lets do what we can to make this spot better. Full liquor license is in the works im told. Never a jerk in the joint. Ps they just added an awesome smoking patio in the rear but keep the chatter down cus of the apt. Behind the bar. Ppl are sleeping.
Review Source:Swanky little bar. The owner is often there and he's very nice and personable. I went on a karaoke night where contestants are judged by a panel of bar patrons. It was pretty entertaining. The drinks are decently priced and the crowd is usually pretty lively. I heard they occasionally have live bands as well.
Review Source:Maybe this review stems from me coming to terms with the fact that I live in suburbia. Â Dont get me wrong, this is a great change from the chaos that was west hollywood. Â I mean I can make out the little dipper and sleep in an very quiet neighborhood....but there comes a moment where you realize "I need to get out of here into the real world".
Last night was that moment, my dear roommate and I were both stir crazy and wanted to avoid the Halloween mayhem at Johnnies so we headed over to this little gem.
Its beer and wine only...so there was a lot of shochu and some good beers. Â The problem here is that I didn't read the reviews and was a little disappointed when I wanted some gluten free libations. Â The sake wasn't cold, there was no cider, definitely no liquor....just lots of fun shochu cocktails some sangria and a good selection of beers.
The owner/bartender is awesome to say the least, he tried his best to accomodate my ridiculous dietary restrictions (still frustrated w/ this) and they drinks came fast and cold. Â
I just can't get over the beer/wine thing. Â What he did bring me was really good, there was some blue martini thing he made (I'm not one for ordering foofie drinks like this one but I gave him full authority to make me something special). Â It tasted like a blue otter pop....legit.
The music was alright....There was a small dance floor no one seemed interested in using as a dance floor, and the booths seemed nice and cozy along the wall. Â
you can tell everyone at the bar was a regular and lived w/in a 5 mile radius so thats kind of nice to have a neighborhood bar. Â I will say that the owner mentioned that he's going for his full liquor license and I hope that happens for him, Â there's a good chance I'll go back if its approved.
The decorations are the obligatory "east of the orient" and he makes an effort to give this place a theme. Â I feel bad for not giving more than 3 stars but I just feel like presentation is EVERYTHING and if you mention being a sake bar, then have it ready for your evening crowd.
So my band played a show here the other night and well, it was an odd experience.
I'll start with the cons...
1- It was SO humid in there that our violin, guitar, and bass all kept going out of tune. We were not the only band experiencing this. Makes it a crap music venue.
2- 2 coronas for $10? Kinda pricey. No bueno.
3- the area for the band to play was awkward, just in the center, and we almost didn't fit.
4- a bunch of creepy old dudes were the only ones hanging out at the bar when we got there around 9. Crowd did get younger as the night went on.
Pro's...
1- The first bar tender was ok, a girl, who seemed to be in-cahoots with the old dudes, still nice. But the second bar tender was a dude who was SUPER nice. And the whole vibe in the place got WAY better once he took over.
2- Kind of a continuation of 1... The cool guy bartender pulled down a movie screen and put on this crazy french cartoon from the 70's about aliens and humans as their pets. Creepy, but fascinating. We dug it.
3- Band members each get a free beer (didn't find this out till after I purchased my pricey Coronas). Although the cool guy bartender offered to switch my beer for a small Sangria, but I sadly declined as I was DD.
Other stuff isn't really pro/con kinda stuff. The vibe in the place seems to depend on who is working. The tv's in the corners are cute, one says "Make-out Booth", adorable.
So with 4 cons and 3 pros, 3 stars it is. Thats not very good math, but who cares.
i looooooove this bar!!
Shanghai'd Room is hella bad ass.
Coolest spot in HB by far, mostly locals frequent this bar.
Its right off beach blvd.
Awesome imported beers, and amazing saki bombs.
Different bands, music, shows, just depending on what day of the week you go.
Everything from underground hip hop, Â karaoke, drag queen shows, to live rock bands.
This place is a great dive bar. Cheap drinks, clean, cool atmosphere.
I just wanna say, FIRST TO REVIEW ASSBAGS! Ok, I'm not exactly THE FIRST to review if you quantify its alias counterpart Bar HookUp.
You gotta credit though the innovation and ingenuity that one can come up with when what you got to work with is beer and wine.
My lovely date asked if Gabe (owner) carried Shock Top Raspberry and he replied with, "No, but I can raspberry anything..."
Raspberried some Blue Moon and added some fresh blueberry floaties for aesthetics. He's (Gabe) pretty inventive, works with Soju, Sake, rice vodka, and flavors you wouldn't expect alcohol to taste like. He's the McGuyver of alcohol, just give him a pen and dental floss and he'll make you something you like. Not really, you're gonna have to pay with cash.
Don't sweat the technique...
