Scotch eggs, shrimp and grits cake, and probably everything is delicious. The menu has something for the finicky eater husband. Â We were lucky to try his venison chili during the winter and it was so delicious we ordered two to go for the next day. Â Another special if I remember correctly was a crab cake with a beautiful display of vegetables. Â We had split the appetizer and I decided to order the dinner portion because it was so delicious.
We are a big fan and only wish they were on opentable so I can check to make a reservation early on a Saturday morning to see if we can make plans for that evening. Â Otherwise, I have to wait till about 3pm and we are 35 miles from town. So, if there are no reservations available, I'm all dressed up with no where to go. Â Guaranteed delicious restaurants like Sheehan's and Frog Hollow require reservations in Augusta.
I'm from Boston and when I hear "Irish Pub".. I take that literally. This however is not the typical dive pub that I was expecting.
This is a hidden gem right in Augusta that has a friendly staff with amazing food!
My cousins ordered the shrimp and grits appetizer (which was good enough for a small meal)- it was a block of fried grits, shrimp, in a tasty tomato sauce and I highly recommend it!
I ordered the fried green tomato salad and they were accomodating by adding a couple of scallops (an extra 4 bucks). Â The scallops were on the smaller side but they were delish! Â
I wish this place had two things: more dessert options and a drink menu!
I ordered the hello dolly which was a martini glass dessert that had some type of bar, vanilla ice cream, and strawberries. Even though it hit the sweet tooth spot.. I wanted more than just two dessert options.
Bottom line.. I would come again!
I agree with Brian K that this is the best restaurant in Augusta. Â I have not been in town long so there are a few suggested places that I have yet to try e.g. Frog Hollow, or something called "The Bistro" (not sure which bistro it is), but I'm a strong believer in "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and to say I'm a creature of habit is an understatement (there might be a stool dedicated to me at Brasserie V in Madison, WI).
I've been to Sheehan's twice now and plan to return as often as my budget will allow. Â I would actually apply for a job there in the kitchen but I honestly don't think my culinary skills are where they need to be to keep up with this chef. Â There has only been one thing that I wasn't thrilled about, but I think that was my fault, not the chef's.
Let's start with the appetizers. Â I've ordered the mussels both times because they were so spectacular my first experience, I had to get them again. Â I was not disappointed. Â Even my two year old daughter was popping them like candy. Â There was definitely a bit of cream added to the sauce which obviously contributed to its rich enticing flavor, but hey, I had a salad later so it cancels out the cream, right? Â The mussels were served with soft bread which was just the right texture to slurp up the extra juice. Â They get a 10 out of 10. Â
Then came the green salad, which to me, is sort of like getting chicken right. Â Sure you can bread it and throw it in the deep fryer and it'll be tasty, but getting it absolutely perfect to where something so simple and inexpensive becomes elegant and gourmet, is an art form. Â Sheehan's has mastered it. Â If I'm not mistaken, there were greens, mandarin oranges, candied pecans and a sweet vinaigrette. Â That's it. Â It was perfect.
Now the entree. Â I had ordered the pork, cheese grits and collard greens last time. Â This is where I went wrong. Â The pork was cooked perfectly, so as I said before, it was no mistake by the chef. Â I just don't know why I ordered it. Â I don't like grits and I don't like collard greens. Â This time, I knew what to do. Â I ordered the blackened catfish, topped with krill in a cajun sauce (I subbed mashed potatoes for grits... sorry Chef for tweaking your menu, but I just can't force the grits). Â Amazing. Â You can't go wrong with this entree. Â I do, however, like more veggies with my food so I just ate the snow peas off my mom's plate. Â I don't think the chef needed to add anything to this dish. Â If you want more veggies, just order them elsewhere or take them off your co-diner's plate.
For dessert, the chocolate gooey cake with ice cream and strawberries. Â Just decadent. Â If every chef/cook in the world took as much thought and consideration into their product as Sheehan's, hell, if every person approached their job like this Chef obviously approaches his, the world would be a much more satisfied place.
Bravo.
And just to add to the ambience, every patron there was beautiful, well-dressed and classy, and our server was a doll who was on top of her game. Â I can't wait to go back.
Came here after one of the Master's practice rounds. Â Overall the food was very good. As far as the name of the restaurant goes, don't expect this to be a typical Irish Pub. Â Rather than serving up Irish pub classics, Sheehan's takes a more Southern approach to their menu. Â Also be prepared that it may be pricier than you expect. Â Entrees run in the $25-$35 range. Â
I ordered the honey lacquered duck, with stilton cheese grits and fried green beans. Â The meal was delicious and I paired with with something more traditionally Irish, Guinness. Â One member of our party ordered a seared tuna that looked like it was perfectly cooked and he enjoyed it very much. Â Two members of our group ordered the Catfish Louisianne which came highly recommended by the waitress. Â They did not seem disappointed with the catfish dish at all. Â
Next time I am in Augusta, I would put this on the top of the list for places to eat at again.
We called at 8:15 on a Friday night to see how long the wait was and were told we could be seated by 8:30. We got there at 8:30 and although it was crowded, the hostess was true to her word. The place looks small but they have additional indoor seating upstairs where it's quieter than the entrance/bar area.
I had a Sweetwater and I'm pretty light weight, also this was more than three months ago, so I don't remember exactly what the appetizer we got was, but I think meat and a fried egg were involved. Mark my words, it was delicious.
For my entree I had the seafood pasta. Happiness in every bite. That is all I have to say.
This is a much classier place than the category "pub" generally insinuates. For an average date night with drinks, an appetizer, and entrees the bill was about $60, so it's a bit on the pricier side, but well worth it.
Great selection of draft beers. Food is good, staff attentive. I'm withholding one star because the noise level in the main area of the restaurant/ bar is unbearable, making it impossible to enjoy what could be an otherwise nice atmosphere. I don't know if the din can be improved through the installation of sound absorbing materials but I had to converse by nearly yelling to other members of our group. There is another seating area upstairs but it isn't as comfortable depending on the outside temperature. Space heaters are used in that area for heat.
Review Source:Sheehans is the best restaurant in Augusta. Â The owner John is always out hanging with the customers and most of the people are regulars which is a good thing. The honey lacquered duck with the grits and green beans are unreal! Â Not only is the food great but it has a fantastic bar with a great draft selection, great wine list and great selection of good liquor. I send everyone here if they ask me for a local restaurant.
Review Source:Wow. Â The place completely blew out my expectations. Â Coming from Boston, "Irish Pubs" are very common. Â They are supposed to be dirty, cheap, rowdy and great beers. Â Sheehan's was nothing like it. Â It was pricey, upscale, clean, and great fancy food. Â I think this is more of an Irish Pub "concept" or maybe an Irish "restaurant". Not what I usually expect out of a "pub". Â I had a great time though. Â Just be aware of your expectations.
Review Source:I was pretty surprised by Sheean's. Â It calls itself an Irish pub...I've never been to Ireland, but are pubs supposed to be this nice? Â I treated myself to a "welcome to Augusta, Timber" dinner here, but I probably won't be going back very often since it was a little pricey. Â
My companions and I sat on the closed-in-yet-still-kind-of-outdoorsy patio. Â There is also true outdoor seating just beyond the patio, and on the lower level, there is the indoor portion of the restaurant that seemed to be really loud as we stood there waiting for a table. Â
For my appetizer, I got scallops (3 in the dish) and gnocchi served with spinach and a seemingly tomato-based sauce. Â I thought it was a large appetizer, so large, in fact, that I had to take the majority of my delicious entree home for lunch the next day. Â I had the ahi tuna steak served over sauteed snowpeas, carrots, and red peppers. Â It was divine!
Last year, I had a few business trips to Augusta, and never having been there, I asked around, and found someone that had. Â He gave me a list of where to eat, and Sheehan's was at the top, so we went there our first night in town. Â We were so impressed, we tried going back again later in the week for lunch, but we were sad to see them closed. Â On our second trip back, we made a point of going back, and loved it just as much the second time around.
Walking up to the place the first time, it looks like your run of the mill corner bar, but as soon as we saw the menu, we thought it was a joke. Â The food that we ate could have easily cost three times as much. Â I had the shrimp bisque (the absolute BEST I have ever had), as well as the shrimp and grits cake. Â My partners tried the mussels, and the catfish, and both were just as impressed.
I love this place. It's right around the corner from my house, and it's a nice escape from the overwhelming Washington Rd.
1st reason I fell in love: Showed up here on Halloween, and had no idea that they priced their entire menu at $10 for EVERY entree. Â It was amazing. Â I got the catfish, and Kyle got the steak. Â Great way to bring back foodie customers. Â Upon initially entering the restaurant/pub, you think it's impossible to have a quiet meal. Â There are tables around the bar area, but it gets BUSY.
You really need a reservation here on a weekend night. Â
Luckily, there is a separate area for dining off to the side. Â
Really enjoyed the mussels, the flounder special, and everything I've tried so far. Â Dessert was only OK. Â But, the dishes were delicious.
