Shyler's appears to be somewhat of a local favorite. Â It's been there for years and the it shows--in a cool old-school way. Â The inside is a hodgepodge of rooms that seem to have been added over the years. Â The building feels BBQ but the decor and music is pure 50s diner. Â
Those who are familiar with true Southern BBQ will most likely be disappointed. Â I gave the stars for the value--the prices are great considering what you get. Â The all-you-can-eat lunch is a real deal at just under $8. Â You get your choice of pork, chicken, or brisket (add $1) and two sides. Â You can then mix up the meat and sides any way you want on subsequent reorders. Â The menu is pretty extensive for those who don't want BBQ. Â
The quality of the food is just okay. Â The pork and brisket are both pulled (hard to tell the difference, really) and a bit overcooked. Â My guess is that after it's cooked it's held for a while which makes it mushy. Â The sauce is sweet. Â The smoke is very mild on the pork and brisket. Â It shows up more on the milder chicken which is dunked in a hot BBQ sauce before it's brought out. Â Chicken was my favorite. Â The sides are all average. Â Nothing outstanding. Â No collards or cornbread or stew for you Southerners. Â
While the food is pretty mediocre it's hard to beat the value and the family-pleasing variety.
I miss Shyler's! Â I didn't eat there as often as I would have liked, but I did use them to cater an event of hungry college students, took my dad there when he came to visit because he is a big BBQ fan, and went there a couple times with colleagues from work for their all-you-can-eat lunch special. Â By far, I enjoy their pulled pork and really like their BBQ sauce. Â I do like the red potato mash and that they leave the skin on... lovely! Â Although the rest of the sides could use a bit of work.
The place has that small town, diner feel and the prices and quantity of food reflect that too. Â While everyone is friendly, the service is a little slow... Â Love this place and if you like BBQ, you should stop in and try it.
