Shyler's appears to be somewhat of a local favorite. Â It's been there for years and the it shows--in a cool old-school way. Â The inside is a hodgepodge of rooms that seem to have been added over the years. Â The building feels BBQ but the decor and music is pure 50s diner. Â
Those who are familiar with true Southern BBQ will most likely be disappointed. Â I gave the stars for the value--the prices are great considering what you get. Â The all-you-can-eat lunch is a real deal at just under $8. Â You get your choice of pork, chicken, or brisket (add $1) and two sides. Â You can then mix up the meat and sides any way you want on subsequent reorders. Â The menu is pretty extensive for those who don't want BBQ. Â
The quality of the food is just okay. Â The pork and brisket are both pulled (hard to tell the difference, really) and a bit overcooked. Â My guess is that after it's cooked it's held for a while which makes it mushy. Â The sauce is sweet. Â The smoke is very mild on the pork and brisket. Â It shows up more on the milder chicken which is dunked in a hot BBQ sauce before it's brought out. Â Chicken was my favorite. Â The sides are all average. Â Nothing outstanding. Â No collards or cornbread or stew for you Southerners. Â
While the food is pretty mediocre it's hard to beat the value and the family-pleasing variety.
I miss Shyler's! Â I didn't eat there as often as I would have liked, but I did use them to cater an event of hungry college students, took my dad there when he came to visit because he is a big BBQ fan, and went there a couple times with colleagues from work for their all-you-can-eat lunch special. Â By far, I enjoy their pulled pork and really like their BBQ sauce. Â I do like the red potato mash and that they leave the skin on... lovely! Â Although the rest of the sides could use a bit of work.
The place has that small town, diner feel and the prices and quantity of food reflect that too. Â While everyone is friendly, the service is a little slow... Â Love this place and if you like BBQ, you should stop in and try it.
Got takeout from Shyler's one night out of my month in Evansville. Â Word of warning, their online ordering menu is incorrect and some items on it are no longer offered at the restaurant. When I got to the restaurant I waited a while in the takeout line before someone came out to help those in line. Upon being informed that my order could not be filled due to no longer being on the menu I ended up ordering most of what I was going to order anyways, and as a bonus got out with a lower price since I eliminated some things from their "Taste of Shyler's" that is no longer available. Â So the only downside was that my food wasn't ready when I got there, but it was finished quickly in any case.
Now to the food. Â By far the best part of the meal is, not surprisingly, the BBQ. Â I had the pulled pork and it was some of the best that I've had in a while. Â The BBQ sauce was really the best part. Â I have not had too many sauces better than that. Â The greens beans I had were not good. Â Not a whole lot of flavor to them. Â The wild rice was decent, but nothing special. Â I had a slice of coconut cream pie as well, and again that was only decent.
On the whole, the part of the meal that I went to Shyler's for was by far the best part, which is what I really wanted out of my visit to Shyler's.
I remember growing up in Evansville and eating at Shyler's BBQ. It was always a treat! When I was back in town, I knew I had to make a pit stop at Shyler's BBQ before I left. There was no time to eat in, so we ordered take out. The food was just alright. The Chicken-n-Sauce was a little dry, but the pulled pork was perfect (I put extra BBQ sauce on it!).
The food was priced very well! We were able to feed 8 people for under $40!
The staff was very polite, but they didn't seem to know the answers to some questions. Another customer inquired about the size of their new "Giant Potato" and the lady taking their order answered: "They're big." Hm.
Had dinner here last night and let me tell you, I should have not waited this long to eat here. I have lived in this area practically my whole life and it sure was a mistake not eating here already. This place has a family atmosphere that allows one to be completely comfortable like at a family members house for the evening. Their food was GREAT and reasonably priced. I enjoyed the unlimited meal and the pulled pork was great and the choices of sides were amazing as well! The only problem is the next time I am there am I going to try something else or get the unlimited meal again! 2 Thumbs up as this was an excellent choice for a quick get together with some friends! Fast, Friendly and unbelievably great food!
Review Source:Stopped in for lunch. Â I'm from out of town and ate here on a recommendation. Â There is no way you can beat the lunch special, all you can eat BBQ (pork, chicken or brisket), sides, and drink for 6.50. Â Not to mention you can change up your sides and meat type with every round.
That being said, I enjoyed my food but wasn't blown away. Â I would say it was good, but not great. Â I've eaten at several BBQ places that I would pick over this one.
Nice hometown atmosphere, really enjoyed my lunch. Â I would not hesitate to eat here again, especially if I had the family with me.
Despite only spending one semester at USI in Evansville, I ate my fair share of Shyler's BBQ. Â The pork loaded baked potato was my favorite. Â Now that I live in Texas, I have experienced serious BBQ and found many places to upstage a Shyler's. Â Still, while spending that semester at USI, this place was one of my favorites.
Review Source:I keep going back to Shyler's in hopes that the food would magically get better. Â Unfortunately, I continue to be disappointed. Â The BBQ is mediocre and the sauce is just ok. Â I have had BBQ from all over the country and Shyler's just doesn't match up. Â How I wish there was a good BBQ joint in this town.
Review Source:Shyler's has really gone downhill in recent years. Â The building is in really bad shape, and could use a good cleaning and some new paint (inside and outside). Â Not sure what has happened, but they used to be one of my family's favorite barbeque places in Evansville. Â Some out-of-town guests of ours recently wanted to have lunch there, so I reluctantly went. Â I didn't want the 'all you can eat' lunch option, so I just went with a side salad and a baked potato with barbeque sauce and cheese. Â The salad was of the shredded lettuce variety, had no cheese or vegetables in it, and had definitely been dumped straight out of a bag into my bowl! Â The dressing, honey mustard, was brought to the table in a large plastic oil can (really!), and needless to say it was impossible not to drown my little salad with dressing. Â The potato was okay but needed more barbeque sauce. Â We were seated next to the kitchen, and had I looked through the doors before eating, I probably would have left! Â Luckily, or unluckily!, I didn't see the state of the kitchen until we waiting on our bill. Â I don't think I'll be coming back anytime soon.
Review Source:The special all you could eat was on. Â 4 types of BBQ for like $9 and few dollars for the soda. Â They were the Pulled Pork, Pork-N-Sauce, Chicken-N-Sauce, and Beef Brisket. Â I had the chicken-n-sauce twice. Â How could you not want anything different. Â We were about to order from the menu, but we looked deeper into the menu and said, DAMN. Â The service is great and super friendly. Â Although they are great, I would like to try different places about there.
Review Source:Great laid back BBQ joint! The smell of the wood fire instantly makes my mouth water as soon as I hit the door!! Â The lure of all-u-can-eat for 6 bucks is very hard to pass up... And I can say, I am very pleased! Food was very good, service was on the spot, and I can't think of anything I didn't like about my trip! Â Give it a try... It's worth it!

I grew up on this stuff.
In the years living away from Evansville (8 in total), I've become a vegetarian. One of the things I missed most about eating meat (and there really weren't many) was a Shyler's pulled chicken loaded potato. I'm not kidding, I've considered eating meat when I go back to Evansville, but I'm scared it won't be the same after so long without meat.
Anyways, this place used to be really good and I hope it still is.
shylers is my ultimate fave!!!!
everytime i head back to good ol' eville to visit family or friends this is a must stop on my trip! (i went to high school in evansville)
I must say my favorite things are the bbq chicken baked potato, or the bbq chicken salad ( as i dont eat pork) its nice to get some good bbq being pulled chicken!!!!
i often find myself dreaming of shylers and that delicious potato! last time i came back i drove 3 potatoes with all the sides, for me and my friend and boyfriend to indulge on the next night!
Its a little hill-billy-esque- the roll of paper towels on the table.. large buckets of ranch or your choice of salad dressing to the table, and super large sodas they bring to the table... but hey i think theres a fat hillbilly hiding inside all of us ;)
loves it!!!!
i will see you soon!
What I wouldn't give for some Shyler's right now! Â
Before moving to Chicago, I lived in Evansville for 9 months. Â Now that I have been gone for over 3 years, it is even more apparent that my favorite restaurant was Shyler's. Â
I've not been able to find anything in Chicago that compares to Shyler's pulled pork sandwich (both in taste and price!). Â I loved that I could get cottage cheese as a side too - it created a perfect combination. Â
The 50s dinner décor works.  It's a good place to go with a date, a big group of friends, or take the parents. Â
Now if only I can squeeze in a trip when I head back to Evansville this weekend for a wedding.
