This restaurant is very elegant and the server was professional. We had the salad with Serrano ranch dressing only because they were "out of mussels". That was incredibly disappointing because we try to order mussels whenever possible. The salad was good but needed seasoning because the Serrano makes it bitter.
For the entree, I ordered the shrimp & crab cake with pasta and it was very good. The crab cake was super tall but didn't have too much "filler" of bread crumbs. It was VERY scrumptious. I despise crab cakes with too much peppers/onions/bread so I was delighted that they made it the way I like it.
My husband got the special of halibut and it was good. It wasn't "out of this world" but good flavor. For the price it was a tiny portion.
Past it's prime. Â I used to LOVE this restaurant. Â I frequented the Austin Hwy location, especially for brunch. Â Recently returned to this location for Sunday brunch. Â The food was cold, the bread was old, the potatos on the side had obviously been made far earlier that day and the hollandaise sauce on my eggs benedict had the texture and taste of Grey Poupon. Â Nothing tasted fresh. Â My bloody mary wasn't even the slightest bit spicy. Â Considering their prices and the quality I was used to, this was an abyssmal lunch. Â I do not think I'll return. Â I miss the old Silo.
Review Source:Nice menu. Tough to choose what to eat. I had Salmon and they cooked it to my request ( most places do not understand medium rare when it comes to salmon). My dinner mates had scallops, ribs, ribeye, and red fish. no one complained and everyone liked their food. Wine menu was very stacked and covered the world. The caesar salad had a nice piece of fried cheese that I saved and enjoyed with my malbec wine. Even th cappuccino was good. Nice atmosphere and the waiter was attentive without being disruptive. Oh, and when they served us each course, three people came out and served us all at once. That was very impressive.
Review Source:Go for the atmosphere, service and fried oysters. I've been 3 times and had excellent service every time. Lots of GF items to choose (except, sadly, the fried oysters). The food is not terribly inventive, but it's executed perfectly. $65.00 lunch for two, included 2 salads, 2 entrees and 2 margaritas from the bar. . .make of that what you will.
Review Source:I enjoy going to Silo with clients or colleagues when I am in the 1604 Stoneoak Area. The setting is beautiful and reminds me very much of a restaurant I go to in Cape Town, South Africa. I can only speak about the lunch menu here as I have never been for dinner. I especially enjoy the duck springrolls (which are very comparable to those at Bliss in South Town, for half the price). I have equally enjoyed the lettuce wraps and the gnocchi (which comes with mushrooms and arugula). Prices are VERY reasonable for lunch time, in fact you can even opt for the 3 course menu for $20, which is great for the quality of the food and presentation you get. I highly recommend this if you are in the area of if you need to take some clients out to lunch to talk business.
Review Source:I have been to Silo four times now. I really wanted to love their food....I did. However, I just have not had these expectations met on any of my visits. I have tried a variety of dishes, and gone both for lunch and dinner. Their service is good, and the restaurant is clean and well designed.
The food is just not there. It is unoriginal, and often times has basic mistakes such as being under or overcooked and poorly seasoned. On my most recent visit I ordered the stuffed chicken dish for lunch. It had a minimal amount of stuffing and the chicken and risotto were both overcooked. It was also overly salted.
I have also tried the crab cakes, spring rolls, lettuce wraps, spinach salad, and sea bass. Perhaps my favorite of the above is the spinach salad. My least favorite is the sea bass. The two times I have ordered this item, it has been messy, the fish was overcooked the first time and undercooked the second time and the broth is too runny and salty.
The service has always been fantastic. The waiters are knowledgeable and friendly. I do feel their prices are far too high for the quality of food.
To date this restaurant just has not lived up to my expectations.
My sister took us here for Christmas present. Â It was a fantastic experience. Â The chicken fried oysters were perfect. Â Tasted my sister's Sea Bass....great presentation and taste. Â We received complementary coconut cream (very creamy) pie and vanilla bean cheesecake from manager. Â Best dessert ever. Â My sister books parties here and all the docs love it. Â Big thx to her for introducing us to Silo...we will be back next time in town from Houston.
Review Source:Huge, I mean huge shout-out to the staff of Silo @ lunch today (12/18). Â We showed up at 11:45 with no reservation - party of 11 - separate checks please - your basic holiday nightmare. Â There were several large parties in private rooms and in the restaurant in general. Â We only waited about 10 minutes to be seated, and were immediately greeted by wait staff - bread, water, menus. Â I'm sorry I didn't get our waiter's name as he was terrific (tall, blonde curly-ish hair) - told us all of the specials and took our orders. Â Our food was served all at the same time by about 5 different staff members- hot and exactly correct. Â The food was, as always, just great. Â Â I was just really impressed by the amazing staff, atmosphere and amazing food.
Review Source:The bar downstairs seems to be an afterthought the way its put together. But service from bartenders was good. Seated pretty close to our reservation time. Took about 10 minutes for a waiter to finally join us but once he did the service was pretty on par with what I would expect - attentiveness but not stopping by every two minutes.
Had the duck spring rolls and the endive salad to share. Spring roll sauce was great but if you didn't tell me there was duck in the rolls I wouldn't have known. Wife had the pork shank which was exceptional. I thought about getting the surf and turf (will next time) but settled on the shrimp and grits. Mine was good but after having the shrimp and grits at Luke downtown it really wasn't a fair matchup.
Will definitely go back. Close tables and there is a group area that was pretty loud so don't expect a quiet evening.
I can't believe I haven't written a review for what's becoming my favorite restaurant in San Antonio.
First, I love the chic, contemporary decor ~ too cute! Â Second, the food is amazing!!! I've had just about everything on the menu and its all sublime. Last, but not least, the service is impeccable. Â I've hosted a nimbler of large parties here (80 ppl) and the entire experience was perfect. From their wonderful customized menus to meet by budget ... To the budget conscious wine selections ~ everything is exactly as I'd hope. Not to mention, Joseph (the head waiter) is old school gallant and Patrick ( the owner) is hugely creative and makes wonderful suggestions.
My only disappointment ~ they don't have a location in Houston! Â Where I live ...
A multi-story storefront in a high-end strip mall isn't perhaps the best way to introduce one to an amazing dining experience. In the case of Silo, it is.
Silo was, in a word, incredible. It's tough to balance haute with hearty and Silo managed to do that with impressively prepared dishes and impeccable service.
It's really difficult to amaze me as a diner but Silo did just that. I was there as part of group, a large group but you would never have known that it wasn't a quiet evening meal with someone special. Did I say the food was incredible? It was. Crabcakes that were superb and simply put, the most interesting and delicious shrimp I have ever eaten. The desert was some kind of chocolate tart that powerful and intense.
I cannot recommend Silo highly enough. If you find yourself in the area, treat yourself to a wonderful dinner at Silo. I think you'll be very pleased.
3.75 stars. Ive been here twice, once when it first opened and once just about a week ago. I'll probably go back sooner after my last trip. I would say they have competently executed high end food here, but not really cutting edge or adventurous. My Red Snapper dish was nice, but the best part of the meal was the duck spring rolls. Prix fixe with wine samplings was a pretty good bargain for the quality.
Review Source:I suppose my review is really just an extended tip, since the service was so bad that my party didn't even get seated -- and that was WITH a reservation.
My party of six decided to go here to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. We called ahead to make a reservation and anxiously waited in the lobby to be seated. But then we waited. And waited. The hostess told us they were waiting for another party to get up and leave their table. Then she told us that they did get up, but then they sat back down. Then she told us we could have another table as soon as the second party left. I'm sure you get the picture.
Yeah, this all sounds tedious, because it WAS. Meanwhile, we watched patron after patron walk in the door and get escorted to their seats. At one point (about half an hour into our wait) a manager came by to offer us a free appetizer, but then even THAT took another 25 minutes. I'm no expert, but wouldn't it make sense to at least make sure that part was handled quickly?
We did our best to be patient, but waiting for a table for just about an hour after our reservation time put us over the edge. We called Roaring Fork, told them the situation, and within 20 minutes were seated in their establishment.
Should have written earlier about this, but finally did.
Worth it. Go here.
It is fine dining and it will cost you a few $. That said, after a dozen meals here (and a few at their other location), I have never been disappointed. A few individual dishes have not been a knock-out, but then again, not one has been something worth mentioning as poor.
I have tried most of the meats, several of the specials, and most of the seafood items, so roamed over a lot of the menu.
The Chicken Fried Oysters are really something. Definitely not a light dish, but the flavor is done well. They do well with the mussels, also, where I have found a lot of places either overcook, underseason, or in some cases, don't clean them well. The shrimp and grits didn't sound very appealing to me, but I had anyway and I was wrong: they were great.
For meats, I really like the pork shank. I had something like this at multiple BBQ places in the area so what I thought it might be like was all wrong: Silo's was much better. The tenderloin and surf and turf have both been good choices for me.
I did have the chocolate souffle and what can I say? Just great. The coconut pie was yummy. The one dessert detractor is that twice they have run short of sorbet a few times.
As for the wait staff, pretty good. One time had a waiter who was a bit overbearing and another had one who clearly had too many tables to keep up with. That said, I really can't fault them. They can be very busy so I recommend a reservation on weekends. Also, as they do serve lunch, so this is a good option, too.
This is consistently the premium place to eat lunch in San Antonio, and the fact that lunch is a bargain here is just one more reason to go. Â The prix fixe lunch is amazing, especially in its $20 incarnation, so much so that I usually opt for it. Â It has three choices each of salad, entree, and dessert, and the fourth option is a complimentary glass of wine, which you can subsitute for either your salad or your dessert. Â I usually substitute the delicious cold house chardonnay for the salad, since dessert is my favorite thing,
However, today I did something different. Â I ordered ala carte. Â I decided to treat the entire day as one long feast designed to keep me full of energy as well as food. Â I started with the soup of the day, a tomato bisque, spicy and full of flavor: wonderful! Â With it I had the house made fruit bread with butter. Â Even better! Â For an entree I had one of Silo's specialties, the chicken-fried oysters with mustard hollandaise, with fresh sauteed spinach. Â It comes with angelhair pasta, which is very good, but I asked them to substitute garlic mashed potatoes today, one of my most cherished guilty favorites. Â One of the great things about this restaurant is that they love to make you happy, and I have never felt the slightest resistance when I ask them to make a substitution like this in the over 20 years I have patronized them, nor have I ever been asked to pay more. Â In fact, my waiter told me, "I think I know what I am going to choose for lunch!" while he was serving me. Â I skipped wine for the day and had iced tea, which I like at least as well. Â I also skipped dessert, until tonight. Â Tonight it is a Baby Spinach salad and dessert, with lots of pure clear water to wash it all down. Â It's been an awesome day, and a large part of it was lunch at the Silo.
Where to take my family who were visiting from out of state for lunch? I naturally thought of the PrixFixed Lunch at Silo's. I was so pleased with my choice. I knew it would be tasty and eye pleasing; abit upscale but not uncomfortable and we would have a good talk on the drive home about what a wonderful lunch we had.
Unfortunately, I am sad to say, Silo's snafu's made the main topic of discussion on the drive home while the food took a back seat.
We were seated promptly; I had made reservations for 4 at noon, but probably didn't need to as it wasn't that busy.
What a nice touch to have a tray of sliced lemon, lime, cucumber or grapefruit added to your glass of water while you read over your menu.
Appetizer: Fried Oysters, beautifully displayed and tasty until Snafu #1. One of my guests bit into a large piece of oyster shell followed by a smaller piece of shell. I did mention this to our waiter who "thanked us" for telling him and he promptly responded that sometimes this happens because they don't shuck them in-house and the chefs sometimes forget to look at the oysters before cooking but HE will tell the cooks to look at the oysters better so it doesn't happen again to someone else.
Salads were fresh and dressed well. Caesar Salad could of used some fresh cracked pepper (which was never offered by waiter) but still tasty. Spinach salad had large, green fresh leafs with yummy bits of bacon and a nice sweet but not too sweet of a vinaigrette.
Snafu #2: Would have been nice to have some of the tasty looking bread that the other tables were having. I guess we should have asked...or maybe it wasn't complementary? Either way we never did find out as waiter didn't approach us if we wanted bread or not.
2 orders of Salmon cooked well and tasty until Snafu #3 when one of my guests bit into something that looked like a fish back bone. I didn't take that good of a look because it simply grossed me out.
Shrimp and Grits, Grandma who is in her mid 80's said the shrimp were large and well seasoned and cooked but she has had better grits.
I ordered the scallops. I was so looking forward to these; they came cooked perfectly with a nice caramelized "crust" and melted in my mouth. Snafu #4 , By the third scallop I just could not stand biting in to grit every 3rd bite and did not finish my 3rd scallop even though I so wanted to. On the plus side the mashed potatoes were so creamy that my mom couldn't resist sneaking a bite or 5 off my plate.
Desserts were so scrumptious and all 4 of us thought about licking our bowls but decided against it.
On a side comment my grandmother noted that Silo must really like spinach because every dish we ordered had some.
So how to rate this? All in all the food was good, but the issues we encountered overshadowed the food and made the overall experience disappointing. I don't believe my out-of-town guests were as impressed as I had hoped they should have been. Too bad they left the next day as I did not have an opportunity to redeem myself and take them somewhere else.
I can't even understand why so many people gave this place 5 stars. Maybe I just caught the worst service imaginable.. I will NOT go back, even if my food was FREE.
My boyfriend and I made a 7:15 reservation on a Wednesday to have dinner with his mom. We got there at about 6:45 and was told we would be seated "in a few minutes". I grabbed a mojito from the bar and a half hour rolls around. A half an hour does NOT equal "a few minutes". First strike. If you aren't going to seat someone until their scheduled time, say so next time.
We go up to the second floor; it's not packed and I don't understand why it took so long to seat us. Our server doesn't even come around to take our order for another half hour. Please don't ask me if I'm ready to order when I've had an hour to look over the menu. I think my choices are ingrained into my memory... Our server was BAD. He was a nice man, but horrible at his job. We all turned down the few requests for wine; as he was rambling menu choices and stumbled over his words, he said, I'm going to bring a bottle of wine over here and get the party started! Guy - you're kind of an idiot. We weren't offended, but if it was against someones religious preferences to have alcohol, I think they might be a bit perturbed with that comment.
I got the pork shank, my boyfriend the chicken, and his mom the beef tenderloin. My one positive for this place: the food was good. I'm not sure if it's $30 a plate good, but it was good. I've had meals just as good for half the cost (but that was in L.A. and I think there are better quality, cheaper places to eat there than here in San Antonio). I would have given this a one star review, but because the food was solid, I gave it two.
After we ate, it took about a half hour to get the check. The damage? $100 for 3 people to have dinner - no drinks included. (Oh, I'm assuming all they have to drink for dinner is wine and water since those were the only two drinks offered.)
Service: deplorable. Food: good, but maybe not worth my money. Overall, will not dine at Silo again.
This place is Awesome!! My wife, and I came here for our 13th wedding anniversary. I had been wanting to try this place for some time now. I was very impressed by how nice Silo was; probably one of the nicest restaurants I have been to in a while. The bar is on the bottom floor; you take the elevator to the dinning room on second over looking 1604 and the hill country. We arrived late for our 6pm reservation, but it was not a problem they sat us with less than a 5 minuet wait.
For starters we tried the signature chicken fried oysters. I really liked them I wish I would have gotten 2 orders. Yes, they were that good. My wife and I ordered the Prixe Fixe dinner; a 3 course meal for $29. We both got salads; they were not the type of salads we were use to. My Cesar salad was a on romaine lettuce leaf with dressing on it with shredded cheese on top of it. Strange, but it tasted good. We both ordered the pan roasted chicken breast for our entrees. Now this plate hit the spot, the chicken breast was cook, and seasoned to perfection. The side of mashed potatoes were so good I wanted to lick rest of them off the plate, but I couldn't I was at Silo Elevated Cuisine an upscale restaurant, and not Bill Miller BBQ. :( For dessert my wife order the toasted coconut pie, and I ordered the dark chocolate truffle mousse both were great.
The service at Silo was great our waiter was helpful, and friendly. Overall I really did enjoy my romantic date night with my wife at Silo. The food, service, and atmosphere of Silo Elevated Cuisine is awesome. Like something off the movies. I really recommend it, and will return very soon. I give Silo Elevated Cuisine 5 Stars have your next romantic date here...
Oh my!
I have been craving great seafood ever since moving here from Louisiana. Â I'm sorry, but certain seafood chains just don't do it for me.
This, however, is wonderful. Â The crab cake actually has A LOT of crab in it, and it is absolutely delicious. Â Around SA, a crab cake is mostly breading, so this was heaven. Â And then they brought dinner. Â Unbelievable. Â The Shrimp and Grits has just the right seasoning. Â It is a little different from what I am used to, but it was very tasty.
My friend had the swordfish, and I don't think he has stopped talking about it since. Â
The service has been great every time we've gone. Â This last time was particularly exceptional. Â Our waiter made the whole experience even better, and we cannot thank him enough. Â A really great restaurant pays particular attention to every detail, and this is perhaps one of the best in SA.
It is a little expensive, but when you are looking for a special occasion treat... this is definitely an option. Â Oh, and did I mention that they have a really cool bar downstairs where they make one mean bloody mary? Â Extra spicy. Â Yum!
I can't wait to go back.
oh... by the way... did we tell you how great the swordfish was? :)
This place...is so good. I took my lady there for her birthday. The staff made it a point to make it special for her. Every bit of the food was spot on. If you want  a nice evening out this is definitely my recommendation. The service was unmatched. Everyone at the table was pretty quiet that night until they talked about how good their food was. Definitely make reservations if the occasion is important or going on a weekend. Every aspect of this place is fantastic.
Review Source:Yum. Â Great food. Â Great wine. Â We went for my birthday dinner on a Sunday at 6PM. Â There were a lot of people there. Â Kind of surprising.
I had the Prixe Fixe dinner and wine combination. Â The house salad was good, but a little overdressed. Â The seafood of the night was Mahi Mahi over black rice. Â Excellent. Â And dessert was the chocolate mousse. Â Very good.
The only detractor this evening was a waiter that didn't appear for 5 minutes after we were sat and then told us he was "working in the kitchen."
One suggestion for the wine accompanient for the entree would be an alternate choice to the Cabernet Sauvignon for the seafood entrees. Â Seems like Mahi would go better with a nice Pinot Grigio.
When dining at the Silo, I ask myself, "why do I eat anywhere else?". Â
What to expect: A nice bar down stairs, with live music on the weekends and a four start dining experience upstairs.
The food is fantastic, from the soups,  delightful beet salad, Foie Gras appetizer (ask for the  Sauterne pairing) to the five spice duck - very very good. Â
Here is what really sets the experience apart - service! Â If you are looking for a fine dining experience and would enjoy something really exceptional, ask for Steve or Luciano. Â Both gentleman will create an exceptional experience with brilliant wine parings.
The Silo is a passionate expression in the  food experience.
My husband and I decided to dress up like adults and hit the town for our 11th wedding anniversary. Â He actually wore a suit, so I knew we were off for a 'fancy' night. Â When we arrived at SIlo on 1604, I was sort of excited. Â I had heard the architects around the office talk about it. Â It is not a stand alone place; it was in a shopping center, but it still looked pretty fancy with its 2 story facade. Â When we walked in, I wasn't sure if we were in the right place. Â The first thing you see is the bar that is set up for a live band right in front of you. Â It is a very modern place, so I took in the rest of the entrance area. Â The foyer is 2 stories and you sit and look up at the glasses in restaurant as you wait to be called to the elevator. Â I thought this was a funny twist as it is called Silo Elevated Cuisine...small puns sort of get me every time!
We were the first ones to the restaurant that evening with the earliest reservations they offer. Â If you arrive before 6:30, you are able to take advantage of their Prix Fixe menu that is a salad, main course and dessert for a lower price of either $25 or $35, depending on the dish. Â This is genius! Â It gives us middle class a way to enjoy higher level of dining on a budget or sorts. Â Altough I did end up getting something from the $35 side AND getting a dessert that wasn't even on the Prix Fixe menu for $3 more. Â Hey, I'm pregnant, so I couldn't order any wine, so I figured I deserved it! Â AND I got through 11 years of marriage ---alive...that calls from some creme brulee wouldn't you agree!? LOL!
We were seated by the large glass wall which overlooked the bar and entrance below - GREAT seating! Â It had a nice juxtiposition of fancy and relaxed. Â There are lovely grand crystal chandeliers above and stained concrete on the floors; very modern! Â
I ordered the seared scallops with garlic mashed potatoes and spinach. Â Amazing. Â The 3 scallops I received were HUGE and cooked to perfection! Â My husband ordered the pork tenderloin which was sweet and smokey, very lovely. Â Since I couldn't get my usual wine with dinner, I just had water, but it did not disappoint. Â They bring over a plate full of water garnish: Â cucumber, grapefruit, oranges or lemons. Â I chose cucumber and grapefruit and was in heaven! Â Silly? Â Sure, but it's the little things for this gal! Â The salad was nice and light, which is always good when you know you're in for a great main course and dessert.
The only reason I took off one star is because my creme brulee was very mediocre. Â It was served in a VERY shallow dish, maybe 1 inch deep, so the custard was only 1/2 inch, if that. Â The worst of it was the fact it was overcooked. Â My husband said it tasted like a no-flavor cheese. Â I was disappointed in it, but ate it with a nice cuppa decaf.
Overall, a good experience. Â It was nice to have a fancier than usual night out with my ball-and-chain. Â Silo made our 11th anniversary a bit more memorable.
I don't know if I should be embarrassed to admit this, but I really like this place! Â We didn't go to the restaurant part, but we did have food at the bar. Â It was good - nothing mind blowing, but a good value at the happy hour prices. Â We had lettuce wraps, blue cheese chips, mussels, and duck spring rolls. Â The mussels are probably the only thing I'd be excited to get again. Â I had this delicious cucumber martini thing with chile salt on the rim. Â So good, but so weak... Â I had 3 of them and didn't even have a buzz. Â
It was completely dead when our group of 10 arrived at 8:30, so we were able to make our own section at the bar. Â All of a sudden, around 10 pm, the bar was packed, and I mean PACKED! Â It happened so quickly going from empty to full in a matter of minutes. Â If you are going to see a band there, I'd recommend getting there early to stake out a good spot. Â Plus, happy hour lasts until 9 (yea!), so you can grab a few $5 cocktails and $5 apps while you wait.
The crowd was definitely older but was a good mix of diverse people dressed up to go out and have a good time. Â The band was fantastic... I wish I could remember there name, sorry! Â After they finished playing, they had a dj playing fun dance music. Â Overall, our group had a blast.
Sure it's in a strip mall on a highway, but this is a great spot to go out if you're in a nearby SA suburb!
We went for a late dinner on a Friday night. Â We went for drinks earlier in the evening and just decided to go to Silo while driving by since we had heard good things. Â We were seated right away and greeted by a mix of some of the most amazing smells - I knew we were in for a good meal.
I would recommend a reservation if you intend to dine early - we didn't get there until after 9 and they were just starting to clear out the big dinner crowd.
We tried the lettuce wraps which were fantastic - I love lettuce wraps and these were right at the top of my list - very tasty! Â
We couldn't decide on a wine so they brought us three wines to try out - I don't think I have ever had anyone do this for me! Â We picked a great wine to go with dinner. Â I will say I thought their wine list was slightly overpriced - not excessively though.
I had the shrimp & grits which was just about perfect. Â A great sauce, grits just right and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. Â My wife had the roasted chicken with mashed potatoes - also very well done. Â We didn't get dessert but each enjoyed a nice after dinner drink.
The service and the atmosphere were great - we will definitely be back.
Silo is definitely one of the BEST restaurants I have ever been to. I made reservations there for my boyfriend's birthday and it hugely exceeded our expectations.
The service throughout the evening was phenomenal--something both my boyfriend and I value greatly. The cocktails and cuisine were equally amazing. We started with some cocktails, wine, lettuce wraps (delicious) and a bibb lettuce salad. For dinner, steak. Then we shared bread pudding for dessert (complete with candle for the boyfriend's bday).
Everything was PERFECT! This is a great place for special occasions, celebrations or date nights.
Also, the downstairs bar area and live music make this venue the perfect place for birthday parties and other types of celebrations.
Silo (1604) is one of my mother's favorite restaurants, and since moving to the city, I've visited two or three times. This restaurant's sleek and modern interior is gorgeous, and made me ready to go upstairs (via elevator) to the main dining area, which is equally gorgeous. I especially love the openness of the room--the kitchen is in full view, giving diners a chance to peek in on the action of their entrees being prepared. And oh, the entrees!
I went recently for my 30th birthday, and splurged on the surf and turf: a butter-poached lobster tail served with a lovely petit filet. I'm happy to report that the lobster was tender and not tough as it often is when cooked a tad too long. The filet, too, was a true medium-rare, for which I am eternally grateful. I'd come to Silo from happy hour (and enjoyed a cocktail and several glasses of wine while I was there), so the details are a bit fuzzy at this point, but suffice it to say that I was not let down on my 30th birthday at Silo.
I went again this morning for Sunday brunch, and ooey! Their brunch offerings are just as delicious. We started with the mouth-wateringly delicious chicken fried oysters. These crispy morsels of oyster goodness are served with wilted spinach, bacon, and hollandaise. I am probably going to be suckered into ordering these at every visit, they are that good. The crabcake and poached egg entree was equally tantalizing. The egg was cooked well--the yolk spilled copiously onto the crab cake and lent its unctuous flavor to the very generously sized crab cake. The sides for this entree were wilted spinach and perfectly crispy home fries. The potato was fluffy and moist, and the skins were dark brown and heavily roasted and appropriately salty and mmm. Seriously wondrous things happening here. From potatoes.
The servers are attentive, if a little overly fussy. I'm not a fan of lengthy and needlessly fancified descriptions of food, but it seems like most of the servers here rely on this method to sell their food. It's a tad on the pretentious side, and I find it kind of a turn off. Overall though, I really like this place and will probably visit again regularly.
After countless of visits, Silo has never let me down. The entrees were flawlessly executed. We ordered a rather satisfying 32 day aged 14oz medium-rare ribeye with a "loaded" baked potato gratin and asparagus, crimini mushrooms, and bordelaise sauce. We also ordered the five spice duck (braised duck leg and grilled breast) over couscous and topped with lingonberry-cider sauce. Both were beautifully presented and bursting with flavor and textures. The icebox cheesecake and the dark chocolate mousse were simple yet so indulgent.
Travis, our server of many times, has yet to recommend a wine which we do not like. His knowledge of wines and down-to-earth personality makes him a great server; a personal favorite.
The atmosphere at Silo is always intimate and sexy. The pricey meal is worth every penny and more. As expected, I will be back again and again.
Excellent. Â The food is excellent. Â I had the muscles (superb) and risotto (very, very good). Â The presentation of the dishes is outstanding-- every dish that went past the table looked wonderful. Â The service is good. Â The atmosphere is very cool-- an elevator ride takes you to the second floor restaurant with a new-age feel. Â The service is very good. Â
Overall, it's an outstanding restaurant. Â I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. Â It's not quite five stars, but it's really better than four stars.
Went here for my 30th birthday. The food was incredible, the service was incredible, and the ambiance was incredible. Our server made excellent wine and dessert suggestions - we left extremely satisfied and can't wait to return!
If you arrive before 6:30, the 3-course option is the way to go!
We had a lovely dinner last night. We went without reservations, kind of on a whim. But it was still happy hour while we waited in the bar. I had an amazing cucumber cocktail, and we split the duck spring rolls. Upstairs, we split a Caesar salad: delicious and light. I had the chicken-fried oysters and my husband had the crabcakesa nd shrimp. Everything was amazing, and the service was excellent too.
Review Source:Silo Elevated Cuisine was a delight. Â I tried several foodie recommendations during a business trip to San Antonio and this was my favorite by far.
Being from Los Angeles, the location was a little strange, a vast parking lot and an l-shaped shopping center. Â The signage outside was more like a market's sign than a high end restaurant. Â (But kudos for plenty of parking and no overpriced valet.)
Entering the doors, I saw a small lounge and a hostess by the elevator. Â She called upstairs and let the host know to expect us. Â As soon as we stepped outside the elevator, a friendly woman welcomed us with menus in hand. Â She was warm and not too formal.
The decor and ambiance is quite nice, sort of a tranquil, retro modern feel. Â Polished concrete floors, spotless glass panels enclosed the high ceilings left open over the lobby area, dropped textile panel ceilings with industrial ceilings peeking through, chandeliers, stone walls, an array of booths and tables, muted soothing colors and fabrics and a wine cellar on display. Â I loved watching the open kitchen and all the beautiful dishes whisked away from the window.
The menu showcases an enchanting assortment of some unexpected combinations, including Asian fusion with Vietnamese influences. Â Our server was soft-spoken and polite. Â He talked us into the crabcake, despite my friend being from Maryland and tough to please when it comes to crabcakes. Â We also ordered the beef lettuce wraps and for our entree we split the Red Snapper with a couscous stuffed tomato and beurre blanc.
The crabcake was a good portion, beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. Â Very light on any sauce or binding ingredient, and not a breadcrumb in sight; a welcomed absence in my opinion... letting the crab meat speak for itself. Â I think it could use a little more seasoning or maybe a drizzle of sauce to give it a hint more flavor or moisture.
The beef wraps were delicious, very well seasoned and surprisingly filling. Â Probably the most refined beef wrap I've ever eaten, boasting of black angus beef - tender and succulent, covered in an undistinguishable medley of flavors spun together by a hoisin-based sauce.
The red snapper was the star of the evening. They split the entree for us and it looked terrific and was quite a generous portion. Again, perfectly cooked, simply seasoned and everything went together in such a fantastic way. Â Textures, flavors, freshness - perfection, deceptively simple yet thoroughly enjoyable. Â
Add a few glasses of wine to the meal and we were happy diners. Â I highly recommend Silo - talented chef, fresh ingredients and perfect preparation. Â This is a restaurant that would be right at home in Los Angeles or New York and finally, one reason I won't mind the heat in San Antonio quite so much.
Silo (1604 near Blanco)
Silo... If you had asked me about this place a few weeks ago I would only have mildly endorsed the food and service. For a place that bills itself to be "Elevated Cuisine" the food is uh.... okay.. When I throw down a hundred bucks for dinner I want to say to myself "This must be what it's like to be important/rich/a rock star/whatever", but when I left there I felt like I had just bought a broken ipod for $200. So, if you're going for fine dining I would recommend The Lodge, Bin 555, or Twenty-Nine for the money.
However, a few weeks ago we were out hunting cocktails and decided to stop by Silo's small bar. (We almost missed it because I tend to slam the gas pedal to the floor whenever I drive by Houlihan's) The bar was empty because it was so early on a Monday and we were greeted cheerfully by Amy (A hot chick who brings me alcohol, henceforth to be known as: HCWBMA). Amy mixed our drinks nice and strong, not CB's strong, but plenty strong even for me. She made conversation with us and we had a really good time. Now the moment I had been dreading; tab time. Amy placed the check tray in front of me, I peeked between the fingers of my trembling hand expecting not only an early end to our barhopping for the evening but that we would have to limit our entertainment to Blockbuster for a few nights.... "$36?!! There must be some mistake!" No, the numbers added up.. Whew! 50% tip for Amy....
A few days ago we were in the area and thirsty as usual... We went in to find the bar packed but got the same cheerful greeting from the first HCWBMA that saw us. We lucked out and only had to wait for a little while to get a couple of bar stools. I was relieved and just a little excited to see Amy behind the bar. She smiled, waved, and without a word had mixed our first round to match our last round from no less than two weeks before. This is no ordinary HCWBMA, this is an expert bartender worthy of her own bar.
That night there was a cover band (Eddie and the Boozers) playing music that was appropriate for the clientele; a pretty even mix of thirty-something couples and singles of roughly the same age looking for their second or third wife or husband. We had a hell of a good time, enjoyed the band immensely, and the tab was just as bearable as the last time.
Go to Silo's bar, ask for Amy and let her get you ripped.. You can thank me later.
***EDIT***
Alas, Amy has moved to Florida. However Marty is a nice guy and an excellent bartender. I look forward to many interesting conversations over equally interesting cocktails at Silo.
Another solid food find in San Antonio. I love when I come across places I didn't know existed. A client took me to lunch here and it was divine. I ordered the tempura shrimp salad. It had a ginger dressing and a wasabi dip for the shrimp. The flavors complimented the dish and it was the perfect portion. I didn't leave hungry or over stuffed. Service was also very good. We were able to have a business conversation without being interrupted every 5 minutes.
Review Source:One of the "go to" restaurants in San Antonio. Â Visited Silo on Loop 1604 this past weekend with the family. Â All votes were that this is one of the best restaurants in town. Â Certainly from the food, decor and service, it has to get a very high rating. Â
We arrived on time and were politely told to go up the elevator to the main dining room. Â The bar and live music is downstairs.
Upon existing the elevator, we were shown to our table. Â The dining room is sharp and modern with a black markble floor. Â Very nice.
Our server was most courteous and made recommendations both on the dinner menu and extensive wine list. Â Just a good feeling.
Our large party had various appetizers, salads and main courses. The chicken fried oysters were tasty for sure. Â Our selections included the filet, special lamb, seafood pasta, and the Atlantic Salmon. Â All arrived hot and looked very nice on the presentation. Â
My filet was cooked to perfection as medium-rare. Â What a lovely cut of beef, and so tender you could almost cut it with a fork. Â Had some nice California red wine to accompany the meal. Â Really outstanding tastes and the sides of mashed potatoes, asparagus and mixed vegetatables were all cooked very nicely and a treat to the palate.
Just a wonderful dining experience. Â I would go back anytime for a special high-end meal.
One word of caution, they are pricey. Â So, for a special occasion, Silo is certainly a place of distinction.
This place has some great wine and the appetizers are wonderful. The entrees however please some and disappoint others. The great thing about this place is that it introduces concepts and flavors that San Antonio has been missing out on. Â I went with a group of 5 and I would say 3 of the 5 entrees were amazing, but the other two were just kind of off. They weren't horrible, but it was a typical flavor with something that could have been unique. They need to be more careful with their Foie gras and perhaps pull some items away from that uninspired BBQ sauce.
I could spend all evening rotating appetizers and having drinks though. Enjoy!
Service was good, not exceptional. Â Food was good, the crab cakes were fabulous, but scallops and pork shank were so-so. Â Food not very hot, mashed potatoes on one plate were still cold. Â After delivery of the entrees, waiter was not to be seen, so we ate the lukewarm food. Â Manager walking about the room, but not engaging customers at all (how is your dinner, etc).
The original Silo on Austin Hwy is much better. Â Won't be returning to this location, seems pretty sterile and no atmosphere.
