After hearing such great compliments about this place I decided to try them out... Great salads I was truly impressed. You get any five toppings you want and just 50 cents for each extra ingredient. They have a slew of toppings but no croutons bummer for that. I have been here several times, had breakfast sandwich and they too are very good for the price $2!
By all means check them out you won't be disappointed!!!!
As much as I am in the area, I had yet to try out Simply Soups until Friday 4/26. I went in around 1:30 and there were a few people already inside dining and a few waiting in line. The menu here is not expansive, but its more about the options you have for building your own sandwich or salad. I got a lunch combo (there are 3 choices) of 1/2 sandwich and cup of soup for $5.50. The soup was AMAZING, chicken and poblano (spicy but not too spicy). Â I was also impressed at the choices for salad and sandwich toppings. I got basil pesto on a turkey sandwich. YUM! I will be back, especially since the place is up the street from my office. Next time, I will remember to take pics before I devour the food.
Also, considering that I was very overwhelmed by what to order, I looked around and asked some of the patrons what they liked. Many of them take advantage of the "build your own" option, but the owner recommended the soup that is GREAT! She said it was one of her top sellers.
That same afternoon, I came back in for a pomegranate lemonade, and that too was great. Simply Soups has a fan in me!!
Underwhelmed! Â In an effort to support businesses in the community, I've been to this place twice. Â The first time I went they had just opened. Â I ordered a salad and remember that it wasn't anything to write home about. Â I just went again today (ordered another salad) and ended up throwing away my food. Â
They gave me packets of salad dressing and croutons, which is fine, but I expected them to make their own (or at least act like they do). Â It would have probably made the salad taste a lot better. Â The grilled chicken on my salad was ice cold (the menu said it would be hot) and it left a very VERY strange after taste. Â I probably won't be going back.
I recently moved to the Bronzeville neighborhood and was really excited when I saw SImply Soup and Salad restaurant.
I decided that I would support this new business and try to leave my house a little earlier for coffee before work. I felt guilty going to Starbucks, McDonalds or Cafe Bacci downtown when I can spend my dollars with a Black owned fledgling business instead.
Yesterday, I was under the weather and decided to go to the restaurant for a sandwich and some soup. I walked in the restaurant 15 minutes before closing and gave the server my order. She told me that they turn off the panini press 15 minutes before closing and that the bread would not be toasted.
I told her that would be fine and go ahead and prepare the sandwich. Two women were standing behind the counter with her and they were visibly upset when the server agreed to take my order. She turned and asked one of them to make the sandwich and they both looked at each other as if to say "Huh, I know she is not talking to me!".
The older lady looked at me in such a mean way, turned around while shaking her head in disgust because my prescence made it inconvenient for her to go home on time. She walked slowly to the kitchen still shaking her head and doing this infront of their children that were in the restaurant.
I told the server that I didn't want the sandwich because the lady didn't want to make it. I was so upset I turned and left while the server asked me to wait. I felt like I was asking them for a favor instead of purchasing food from a restaurant. There is never a welcoming feeling when you enter that place. You are not greeted with a smile or assisted with the menu. I would be so happy to serve my customers that i would go all out to make them feel welcomed.
I would not recommend this place for lunch because you are made to feel like an outsider. The customer service is poor and I would be surprised if they were around in five years. I told other people about my experience and they vowed not to give them a chance.
All hope is not lost because their are other great establishments in the area that are friendly. I guess I will be going to McDonalds on Cottage Grove for my coffee in the morning instead of this dreary place.
I must say the food is GREAT. Â From the breakfast turkey sausage sandwich to the delicious soups and salads at lunch, I can't complain. BUT....the OWNER is not friendly or deserving of my money. Â I have been there many times and have tried to make conversation but the owner still has a stale attitude. Â There are a couple of negative incidents with the OWNER I can recall...
1. I didn't realize she had placed guidelines on her debit card machine. Keep in mind I had placed the same order many times before then and was never told anything about a specific amount of money I HAD to spend. Â What ever I ordered didn't meet the guidelines. She told me I needed cash. I explained to her I normally don't carry cash. She stares at me like 'so'. I ask her if I can get my food anyway, she says No unless I order something over the allotted guideline. WOW!
2. The cafe stops serving breakfast at i think 10am. I walk in at 10am. I am waiting for a couple of people to get done ordering. The OWNER takes my order and I proceed to order a breakfast sandwich. She stops me and explains that it is after 10. I'm looking confused because it's like 2 minutes passed 10am and I have been waiting in line for a couple of minutes. She says again that they do not do breakfast after 10. THEN SHE LET'S ME WALK OUT THE DOOR.
3. I am using my debit card and I give her my out of state ID. She asked if I had an IL ID, I tell her no. She says, well next time you need an IL ID if you want to buy food from here.
Just to name a few. I don't think the OWNER should be anything other than happy, bubbly and excited for our business. Â A small local business in which a lot of business comes from referrals should not treat their customers this way if they expect to survive.
I love this place because you can make your own sandwich and its all so fresh. I have only had the soup once I believe it was chicken poblano soup, it was very good as well. The only thing I would change are the hours. I wish they were open later so I could go for dinner. It is way better for me than the other options in the area.
Review Source:I must be slipping in my old age, I thought I had reviewed this place before. I could go on about how friendly they are, how clean the place is, or whatever it is my wife gets there and likes but I can't think of anything other than how damn good their grown-up, adult, or whatever they call it, grilled cheese is.
Seriously, mouthwatering, mmmm....
I wonder if they're open right now...
I'm greatful that this shop is within walking distance of my office. I normally eat the 1/2 of sandwich and cup of soup. The price can't be beat.
They always have 3-4 soups to choose from and they are fresh, hot, and hearty. When I'm watching my wieght I will have a salad because I get the toppings I like and I can switch it up.
Lately I have become a fan of their brownies.
Call ahead because they do get busy.
