One of my favorite bars in Key West. Â We came there for Spring Break and they had it all decked out for Spring Breakers. Â My favorite part was the dance floor and the AMAZING live band who was playing that week. Â They knocked it out of the park, playing covers of recently-released dance songs (think LMFAO) and also songs from our generation, showing they reaaally knew their audience ;) (think Backstreet Boys, Blink 182). Â One of our funnest nights there. Â The bouncers and security guards were super nice as well!
Review Source:Sloppy Joe's, the v2.0 of Hemmingway's favorite spot. Â If you take the tour of his place, you'll notice the urinal from the old location. Â True story! Â
Sloppy Joe's has live music, frozen and cold beverages available, and the food was good as well. Â Wouldn't recommend the sloppy joe sandwich, it's nothing special, continue raising your mercury level on some seafood!!
Waitress was friendly and a bit flirty, yet effective and always on the ball with our requests.
It's the must-hit tourist stop, but man, the reputation is there for a reason.
The drinks were strong, the band was incredible, the wings were out of this world and the staff was very friendly without being intrusive! Â I thought this place would be touristy and that after viewing the Hemingway photos, I would leave to go to a real bar. Â Once I heard the band and got my first drink, I was hooked and stayed for hours. Â I would definitely visit Sloppy Joe's again!
Review Source:My husband and I love Sloppy Joe's. It's a staple of ours whenever we're in Key West. We love the Sloppy Nachos (havana nachos with sloppy joe mix), and they're usually one of the few places that has a good, craft beer on tap. This time it was Dogfish 60 minute. Â They always have live music, and it's usually a group or band that's really funny and good. It is a bar though. So, don't go expecting a 5-star meal. Oh, and the bathrooms are always clean and well air conditioned.
Review Source:Exactly what you'd expect. Sloppy, fun and full of life. Â We saw this AMAZING ginger child band that was soo talented and really made our night. Â You don't go here for amazing food or drinks (I assume) but just to be around happy, sunburnt tourists that want good music to sway their pina coladas along to. The show was amazing and I wanted them to keep going all night.
Review Source:We had a great time here, getting our last round of 2-for-1 drinks before heading back to our hotel - ending our night on a high note.
The place itself in nondescript (being that I couldn't tell it from the other bars while walking down the strip late at night) but my friends gave me the name and said to give it a good review, because we liked it just as much as the others.
It's hard to rate a bar on drinks alone, but really, that's all we were there for. I'm also pretty sure the drinks were poured adequately, because none of my group complained about them being weak.
Most important to me is that the place was clean and the bar staff was friendly.
I lied how close the bar was to our shuttle stop too. That said, if and when we come back to Key West, we will return to Sloppy Joe's.
Bar and music are great but skip the food. The table service is horrible and the last time I was there, my credit card information was stolen. So, if you go, bring cash and eat elsewhere. Hogs Breath is right down Duval, food is better and I've never had a credit card number  stolen there.
Review Source:An extremely fun and entertaining bar right on Duval St. It's a rather large location with plenty of small bars to get a drink, tables to sit down and eat and stage area to watch a good band play some tunes.
Everything seems to be made out of wood (tables, chairs, bars). It has a wide open feel to it with large walk-thru windows and a nice gentle breeze from outside. The bartenders are attentive and spit out your drink in a jiffy.
Normal prices compared to other bars in the area. A big selection of beers on tap and signature house drinks.
Added bonus is the web cam. They have one outside on the street so what we did is call some friends and they were able to watch us act like fools with a bit of a time delay. I highly recommend going here for a drink and have a cool experience. We didn't try any of the food as we just stopped in to have a couple of drinks.
In the evenings this place gets hopping with a mixed crowd (old and young). During the day you will get a mellower crowd. ENJOY!
I cant say I've ever had a bad time here. Even this one time where I almost got into a fist fight with some old dude. I came here last Saturday with some family and we ended up here as I bet everyone in KW does at some point. Loud music. Drinks flowing. Happy people. What more can you ask for?
I like it when its  later in the evening and they mix up live bands with top 40 music. It gives you a chance to get the best of both worlds and take a break from dancing for a bit.
I know I'll be back here I just dont know when. But I'll update when I return.
I wasn't impressed with this place at all. Â Went on a Saturday afternoon during a day trip to Key West.
The drink I had was VERY & laughably weak when it was heralded as one that could knock a person out. Â I got the namesake Sloppy Joe sandwich and let me tell you, it was a Candied Sloppy Joe Sandwich. Â Yes, a sloppy joe is a nostalgic sandwich to eat because its something that many people ate at some point in their childhood. Â But the sloppy joes I ate as a little girl were never ever ever this sweet! Â And fries do not come with the sandwich, btw.
There was a singer playing a banjo who performed requests from the audience for a fee. Â And not just a couple dollars, either. Â He was okay but goodness gracious, was he LOUD. Â I couldn't even hear the waitress, much less enjoy the company of my friends, he was so loud. Â It was like a sad club in there but no one was dancing and only a handful seemed to be enjoying the music. Such loud music in an enclosed space before the sun is down.....no bueno! Â Turn the volume down please!
Prices were not outrageous and the service moved at a decent pace. Â I wouldn't come back though. Â There are just too many other actually fun places to go in Key West.
Having been to other Sloppy Joes' restaurants, we went here excited to have some good food in a great atmosphere. Â Sadly, this was a mistake. Â This is not a restaurant to go to for food. Â The food was very bland and wildly overpriced. Â The service was decent though.
The atmosphere was extremely noisy and crowded and we went in mid-afternoon hoping to beat the crowds.
I'm sure this place excels if you're a big drinker, but if you're only interested in a decent meal, skip this place!
On one of the nights in Key West when we did mild one person in our duo drinking only bar hopping we stopped at Sloppy Joe's. I wanted to hang here because Hemingway did. It was okay. I got carded which was fun, but the place was crazy packed. Also the band was too loud for my tastes. Can't judge the food because we didn't eat here.
Review Source:Yes, it's touristy, and probably not where a lot of locals go, but it is still a blast to hang out here, have a few drinks, listen to the live music, and grab a yummy namesake sandwich. Â Since I was last here 2 years ago, the conch fritters have improved, there was far more conch meat this time. The Sloppy Joe sandwich is truly a must try as well, this is not the sickly sweet meat sandwich your mom made out of the can of Manwich, this sandwich is rich with a zippy bbq flavor and just a bit of a bite to it. Â Get yourself on the webcam and wave to your unfortunate friends and family back home to rub it in a little.
Review Source:Last week was my first time in Key West, and an unexpected venture at that. My cousin and I were sailing on a Carnival Cruise and at the last minute they changed our ports, adding Key West and a stop in Freeport, Bahamas.
From our cruise info, Sloppy Joe's was stated to be "THE place to go in Key West." So naturally, we had to stop there. Having eaten a large breakfast, we decided on an appetizer and went with the cajun fries. Not bad! And of course we had to leave room for a piece of Key Lime Pie!
The food was a-ok, but the highlight of our time there was the live music. There was an acoustic guitar player who was singing, and the waitress mentioned he took requests. My cousin and I were sitting close to the stage and the musician kept making eye contact with me, so between songs, I spoke up and asked him if he could play "Free Fallin.'" He agreed, and after some chit-chat, did a shout out to Minneapolis and "these beautiful girls sitting behind me." :)
The one thing I would complain about is the lack of space--but I blame this on it being such a tourist trap. When we arrived, there were no empty tables, and after a couple promised us their seats, they were snatched up by someone who had "already reserved them." The waitress on duty directed us to the back where there supposedly were some open seats. We walked back and were met with no such luck. The waitress in the back noticed us standing there aimlessly and let us know there would be an open table in her section soon. As soon as that cleared, I jumped onto a seat like a hawk--but not quick enough. An elderly gentleman had snatched the seat next to me!
Needless to say, we were a bit frustrated by this, but we did eventually get our own table and an apology from the kind waitress.
I've heard Key West has quite the nightlife, and I would have loved to stay to experience it, but alas, our ship sailed at 4pm and we were unable to stay. Someday I'll have to make the 36hr trek by car and stay longer!!
Beachy fun, great selection & really laid back! Â Although most of their menu consists of 'regular' eats, as in fast food, their claim and best offerings will be anything that goes with their extensive selection of cold beer - oh, and they have fancy harder stuff too. They offer a great menu of fast beach bar eats, and it's reasonably priced. The place is a mess in a good way for a beach joint, the staff is helpful (although don't expect the Ritz). Depending on what time and/or day you go, the venue changes from live bands, house performers to special events - so watch out! Since you're in the keys, you'll like it as long as you're in a beachy mood... I think you'll enjoy this Joint! Â Go and let your hair down (if you have any)!
Review Source:A landmark in Key West. My absolute favorite place to catch live music, because they have it all day long. Now onto the the food, make it sloppy sloppy sloppy......A sloppy joe sandwich, with a side of sloppy fries (yep french fries topped with sloppy joe sauce), and wash it down with a sloppy rita. It can be very crowed in the evening especially, when they move the tables and turn it into a dance floor. Best advice eat the food prior to then, and stay for the live music.
Review Source:This is a fun must visit place in Key West. They have great drinks and have different bands playing all afternoon and evening were great to listen to. If the Doerfel Family happens to be playing - definitely stop in to see them!
The food is not good so don't even bother ordering.
The restrooms were clean. The staff were friendly and very quick to bring drinks which was a big plus considering the place was packed.
This will be my first KW review on Yelp, because it's the first place that had become a "must stop" for me when we were here. Â It's not anymore, but still a pretty good time.
The food is ok...and we do really like their Sloppy Joe sandwich. Â I have nothing really bad to say about the food, as the fritters and Key Lime pie are good. Â Actually really nice if you're enjoying the music. Â
The daytime music can range from ok to lame, depending on your taste, and we've always enjoyed Barry Cuda and others in the past. Â
Evening bands usually rock hard, and we've liked M-80 and Vs. the Earth among others. Â The place get packed at night, especially on the weekends. Â Great time! Â
Drinks are pricey...$15+ for a round of two margaritas...but you're in KW. Â The quality of a mixed drink might depend on what bar you're ordering from (there are several), Â how busy they are and if you've taken care of them before. Â We've only had one (gone now, I think) that was bad.
Only one black check on the service came one night (a couple of years ago, so I'm sure she's gone) when we'd taken a high top on the side. Â Waited a while for a server to get our drinks, so I went to the bar. Â She confronted us (rudely) about getting our drinks from the bar when we were at a high top (table service) area. Â I apologized, settled up at the bar and got good service for the rest of the night. Â No worries.
Daytime staff is awesome, and most have been there for years. Â Open air bar with music. Â Fun and rowdy at night, especially on weekends.
Sloppy Joe's is a staple of Key West and a must if you've never been.
While it's not my favorite bar in Key West, it's one of those Key West experiences you simply must have.
It can tend to get a bit crowded later in the evening and especially on the weekends. Live bands are typically good but I'd go a little earlier in the evening when it's not insanely packed with people and you can get to the bar in less than 30 minutes.
Good atmosphere. Good drinks. Good live bands. Gotta give it a try.
Sloppy Joe's is a legend in the tiny, crazy world that is Key West. Â You cannot visit the island and not stop in at Sloppy Joe's for a beer or two or ten. Â
That being said, I have to admit it's not my favorite bar... ::ducks:: Â
I will say that it is in an awesome location, there is a great mix of people and they always have live music. Â But each time I have gone, I haven't LOVED the band and the drinks always seem a little bit expensive. Â And I just have so many other bars within a 2 minute walk (or stumble) that I just enjoy so much more.
You might not want to make this the only stop of the night, but it is definitely worth a visit.
Over the course of the Sunday brunch, I chatted with the nice ladies sitting next to me, and they were retelling a tale from Sloppy Joe's from the night before. I was also informed I cannot call a visit to Key West complete, without a visit to Sloppy Joe's.
I can see the charm of this place. It is not complicated. Big, open space, with one main bar, one side bar, with tables and chairs littered in-between. The giant stage featuring many local and other popular traveling acts. On the night I visited, the featuring band has a really cute girl on vocal, two guitars, and a drummer somehow hiding behind plexiglass for reason unknown, covering 80's song. It wasn't a bad act, and having a cute lead singer couldn't help either.
That night was a packed house. PACKED. HOUSE. I literally had to duck and weave right in between a group of guys taking shots of rums just to get to the bathroom. On the way, I found this smaller room, hiding away from all the loud noise and non-sobriety. Now, this is my kind of place. No frill, no stress, no trouble. Just a simple taproom.
I would have give Sloppy Joe overall a 3-star, but the taproom itself a 4-star
There is also a gift shop attached to SJB, however I didn't see anything terribly interesting; just some apparels with the establishment namesake printed on them.
Overall, it was an interesting to at least experience this place, but not so overtly exciting that I stayed for the rest of the night. Now let's move on to some more shady places!
Sidebar: some of the more popular bars and clubs and pubs in Key West have webcams installed; the main use was during Fantasy Fest, but I have been told sometimes they also turn on the cams during off time. These cams can be accessed and viewed via webpages.
Read on yelp and heard from peeps that this was the place to go when you're in Key West, a landmark bar. So the boyfriend and I decided to stop here for a drink while we were making our bike ride bar hopping trip. Yup that's right, you heard me, bike ride bar hopping.
We decided to share the sloppy joe sandwich while enjoying our beer on a hot HOT summer day. The sloppy joe sandwich was sooooo good, so much flavor and perfectly seasoned. One of the best sloppy joe sandwich I ever had. Â We didn't really get to try anything else here but from the fun atmosphere of the bar and the deliciousness of the sloppy joe, if and when I get a chance to go back to Key West, this is definitely a place I would stop by again.
I'm a fan of Sloppy Joe's Bar, just because it's a classic from Key West and always a good time. Many have reviewed that one, so this is for "Joe's Tap Room" next door. I never knew this place existed, but apparently it's been here for a couple of years now. It's a small room located down the side-street where Sloppy Joe's is on the corner. You can also get to by walking in there from inside Sloppy Joe's. It's a small room with a bar and stools and the A/C is pumping. It's much quieter than the main bar, and they have some nice flat screens showing sports. The bartender was a really nice guy.
In the tap room, they had some really good beers on tap for decent prices ($5-$7). They rotate the tap list. On this particular day, they had Victory Summer Lovin, Bell's Oberon, Southern Tier 2XIPA, Rogue Dead Guy, Abita Turbodog, etc.
Also, some information that was good to know - if you're in the main bar at Sloppy Joe's, you may not see all of these on tap. For example, they may only have one or two, but you can ask what they have over in the Tap Room, and they will go pour you a draft and bring it back. Now that I know Sloppy Joe's always has craft beers like this available, I will be sure to visit again on my next trip to Key West. I'd probably visit anyway LOL, but it's nice to know.
Chances are, if you're hanging out in Key West, and you're not Jimmy Buffett, you're more than likely a tourist of some sort. Â And Sloppy Joe's is a definite stop on any tourist's bar crawl.
Being a self-proclaimed Hemingway scholar, I did my Papa research and found that this place has his name all over it. Â He actually helped to name it. Needless to say, this was first on the pub crawl list. Â
Like all of Key West, the atmosphere is just awesome. Â Nobody is rushed, nobody is cranky, everybody is drunk. Â It's seriously awesome. Â We went in the middle of the day, in April, and it was completely full and booming. Â There was also some band playing extremely loud cover songs, which was really cool, and added to the experience. Â The ambiance is that of a really large, over sized, loud tiki bar. Â The floor is sticky, and the bar tables just feel damp... which is the telltale sign of a great bar on Duval St. Also, there is a ton of cool stuff to look at on the walls; of course a lot of it is Hemingway stuff, but it's just an interesting place to be. Â And, it's one of the original bars in Key West, so it has history, for you history buffs.
They have a variety of drinks, including your Key West staples like margaritas, mojitos, and rum punch. Â Since I happen to love Jagermeister, I ordered a drink with Jager, pineapple juice, and some other stuff, but it was not the best. Â In fact, it was kind of sickening, and had I not already had two free margaritas courtesy of our inn, I probably would have spit it out and cringed. Â The boy got a frozen rum punch, and was promptly razzed for his pink drink. Â It doesn't help that they serve them in clear, plastic cups, so he was sipping a Barbie drink for all to see. Â It was a great rum punch though! It didn't get all melty and watery, even towards the end. Â As for the food, we didn't eat there, but I did see some of the food going around, and it just looked like your typical bar food. Â Nothing phenomenal, and not 5-star dining, but who really goes to Sloppy Joe's to eat?
They also have a cool little gift shop, where we purchased a pint glass and a coffee cup with Ernie's face on them. Â I love reaching into the cabinet and waking up to Hemingway on my cup!
While the main bar was a crowded and noisy dance club style affair that would have been lucky to get two stars from me, the rear bar, "Joe's Tap Room", was a cozy, subdued, and pleasurable experience.
Joe's Tap Room features several microbrews on tap plus a full bar and menu. Â The noise from the main bar next door carries over somewhat (as well as some of the drunken frat-boys), but it's not so deafening in here-- you can actually hear yourself think and even carry on a conversation with the others around you. Â The bartender working the night I was in was as friendly and outgoing as they come, and seemed to be relieved to be serving on the 'quiet' side of the bar. Â She even poured me a sample of a 'Fireball & cider' drink that I'd never tried before, and is now one of my favorites! Â Sipping a couple of cold IPAs and chatting with some of the other patrons in this place was one of my better Key West experiences.
our second stop on our vacation....
Skip this place.
I have been told my whole life if i ever go to key west i have to go here, maybe because im to old now  i don't know but i walked out of this place.
service to get a seat is horrible, seat yourself, no rhyme or reason just grab a table and fight off whoever else is trying to grab the same table. drinks are served in flimsy plastic cups, for what your paying damn they should give you a pimp cup!!!
the music is so loud that i was screaming at the top of my lungs to my wife right next to me and she couldn't hear me. I've gone to metal concerts quieter than that.
definitely walk by and keep on walking, what a disappointment.
You're going to either love it or hate it. Â I'd recommend getting there early or having a few drinks elsewhere first.
Sloppy is the best way to describe this place. Â Dive-y but not dark, it has a decent selection of beers and drinks. Â
Put a good cover band in there and you've got a good night ahead - classic key west experience
If you've read many of my reviews you know that I totally love to diss tourist spots. But I can't do that with Sloppy Joe's Bar. Â
I can't diss the peel n eats because they were delicious.
I can't diss the service because it was quick.
I can't diss the live music because man, that guy was playing all my favorites.
I can't diss the live internet camera because I could call my friends and tell them to watch me eat and drink.
I can't diss the margaritas because, OK, I probably can diss the margaritas. They're not so special.
The prices were relatively OK and the crowd was manageable. So there you have it. A tourist spot that doesn't stoop so low just because they can based on their location and history.
Sloppy Joe's could be the most world famous dive bar. And with good reason. I dare you to walk by here at any point while they're open, and not see it packed to the rafters. Can be difficult if you want to stop in to grab some food, but be patient, and just enjoy yourself.
A lot of tables and seats at the bar, but they don't have a hostess to seat you, so keep your eyes peeled and you'll find one eventually. They always have live music going in the center stage, and they're always great. Beers and drinks are cheap. Can't say much about the food since I didn't try any- but everything that walked by my table looked pretty tasty.
Service can take a bit- there's a LOT of people in here, and tables are constantly coming and going, but there's a great time to be had here. Especially if you stop in late at night doing the Duval Crawl.
Great dive bar located on Duval St.
Local land mark that has a lot of history. Â Decorated in a ocean theme. Has mounted fishes and banners from the military and colleges from all over. Has a full bar, frozen drinks and hand crafted beer on tap. They also have a contest annually for the best impersonation of Ernest Hemingway.
The food menu is nice. Plenty to choose from. I like the onion rings or the Peel and eat shrimp to start. Then I like having sloppy Joe with a slice of Cheddar cheese. Has the right amount if seasonings and peppers and onions on a perfectly toasted roll.
The frozen Margaritas Rock with salt.
This is my 2nd favorite bar on Duval Street!!
For Night Life: What initially drew us in was the crowd of people rushing in and the great music coming from the live band at the time. There are 2 bar areas you can get drinks from, plenty of seating area, a big stage, and dance floor. The band usually plays a variety of popular pop and rock music. They did this really cool thing where they played a 50 song mash up! I got to relive my childhood with some of the 90's songs. If you're interested in beers on tap, Joe's tap room is connected right next to Sloppy Joe's. They have a decent selection of beers on tap. The bar also has Hemingway's pictures and paraphernalia every where. Cool place to check out for history buffs.
Sloppy Joe's is a definitely MUST VISIT, if you want that Key West: Duval Street experience.
For Lunch: The next day we ventured back to Sloppy's for lunch to try their famous sloppy joe burger. It was definitely one of the most delicious sloppy joe burgers I've ever had, but kind of on the pricey side. At around $9 for a regular sized sandwich, it only came with half a pickle! If you want fries or any kind of side, it is an extra on top of that. So I would say the food is definitely priced for tourists. I was still hungry afterwards.
Group of five, we were walkin on Duvall street, when we came across this place. What drew us in was the great music from a live band.
When you walk into the place, you come across a big bar area with seating (almost like a dinner/lounge setting). Behind that is where the live band was playing. we got some beers and decided to stick around for some tunes.
The lead singer on the band looks like a twin of a very popular music band (cant seem to remember the name). He had a great voice, the best part being, how easily he would move from a rock song to hip-hop to pop, almost in the same song sometimes. They played 50 songs back to back (one or two verses each), which is where i really appreciated his singing talents.
Great bar, awesome atmosphere, felt for a while like we were in a rock concert..place was hopping all night long.
definatively a must-visit if you are down here.
Let me just speak from a tourist-never-been-before-might-never-get-back-Âagain standpoint...we had just 6 hours in Key West on a cruise stop. Â Had no idea what to expect of Key West, and we absolutely loved it. Â And that was due largely to our time spent here (after an enjoyable time at Hemingway House).
We were here around noon on a Tuesday.  Had an excellent waitress who seemed to genuinely care to get to know our likes and dislikes so she could help steer us in a direction with drinks & food that we would enjoy for our short time here.  As a result, we got to try their killer nachos!!!  (adding a photo).  The slightly sweet sloppy joe meat, mixed with jalapenos and lots of good quality cheese and all sorts of tasty goodness made for some awesome snacking while we each downed three of their drinks. Â
  Husband went for:
Papa Dobles (Papa's favorite!)
Bacardi Light rum, grapefruit juice, grenadine, splash of sweet & sour, club soda and fresh-squeezed lime $7.50
He liked them so much that he had three of 'em while I went for variety....I tried the dreamsicle, the key lime, and the key west lemonade.  Each were good in their own way.  Dreamsicle really tasted orangey, key lime had a lot of cream in it, and I was glad to finish them off with a not-too-sweet lemonade.
To make things even better, onstage appeared a really good guitarist/singer!  He seemed to know what to play to the largely cruise-ship crowd, and it was much appreciated! Â
We were happy to leave tourist tips behind for all the great service, food, drinks, music and Key West experience.  Hope we did Papa proud while we were there for our short time!
