I've eaten here twice before today, and both times had fairly good experiences. The food and prices are decent, you get good portion sizes. My only issue with today was the service. We went at a weird time, around 3pm for an early dinner and we sat out on the patio. The place wasn't very busy, only two tables on the patio (including us) and 4 at the bar and a few tables inside. It appeared that the only waitress on was the bartender, so I give her credit for pulling double duty, but next time they might not want to do that to her cause she wasn't that great at it. Another waitress who was off duty took our order, we didn't see the actual waitress until we were seated for 20 minutes, not a huge deal though. I had nachos for my meal, they were just ok, little soggy. Nothing spectacular about them. Also had a diet coke that tasted watered down, I would have said something but no one came out to ask how our food was, so I just sucked it up and drank it.
When it came time for the bill we waited about 15 minutes then decided to go in and grab our check. The bartender barely said two words to us, a "hey sorry, got a little busy" would have gone a long way with us. Instead she gave a little attitude, no "thanks" or anything.
Needless to say we won't be going back anytime soon.
let me set the tone for this review. its sunday, mid afternoon, summer and overcast. we just want to eat outside. so we stumbled upon Smartys..
Walk in, no one is at the front booth, okay.. walk further get to bar. wait.. and wait. someone comes out and asks us where we want to be seated? Â outside we answer. so we're seated outside. great for us and everything goes downhill from here. the person who sat us said the waitress will be over to get your drinks. We wait. and wait. the person who sat us comes back and takes our drink order. we both got soda. so we have menus, we both decide what we want. and the waiting game begins again. we wait and wait. the person who sat us comes back and takes our order. so we think we understand this system at this point. we wait a pretty long time to get food. the food was delivered by the waitress. i wish she was the savior to all the problems but shes IS the problem. i ordered a turkey club. the frys are average, the club is average, bacon was chewy and hard. our soda tasted water down and flat. we don't even have silverware or napkins. my wife asks napkins, and the waitress delivered the napkins. so we're done eating and fed up at this point, we walk to the bar to find someone to cash us out. and who do you think comes to put the final nail in the coffin? the waitress. she asks a brilliant question, do you want the check? we get the check, we received no thank you from her, no how was everything, no nothing. we left wishing we had never came.
Had eaten here a few times before tonight. Â Food is usually ok, not the best. Â Tonight our order was messed up numerous times and had to be sent back to the kitchen. Â I was completely done eating before my girlfriend even recieved her food. Â Management told me I was lying that we did not get our food at the same time and told me she would not change the bill. Â If you come to Niantic and want pub food this place is mediocore but the mangement is really a big disappointment and as a result the staff is new constantly and usually undertrained and unimformed.
Review Source:I ended up at Smarty's after running the O'Niantic 5K yesterday. Â The lure of free beer got me inside, but once captured I liked the vibe instantly. Â I am a big fan of Pubs and loved the large U-shaped bar. Â I only had a free beer but the bartenders were mellow and the bar area dark enough (even at 11am) to get me to come back for a second round the next time I'm looking for a place to settle in for a hour or so.
Review Source:Smarty's has *the* best broasted chicken (chicken is "fried" in a broaster) in the area. Â The coating is crispy and tasty, and the inside is always sweet and juicy. Â Haven't tried much else here, but they have the chicken down. Â Next time you're in the mood for fried chicken - try this place, you'll not be disappointed. Â Prices are great too, but I agree that it's cold in there!
Review Source:Driving through Niantic on our way home from Mystic we decided to stop here and grab a bite. We sat outside on the patio which is a nice atmosphere. The menu is not exciting but reliable fried.seafood, sandwiches, burgers etc. I tried the NE Clam Chowder which was good. I also ordered the lobster roll (which was nicely priced at 12.99) but the lobster tasted old and rubbery, I wished I had sent it back after the first bite but kept hoping it would get better and then was stuck with it. Unfortunately for Smarty's the day before I stopped and had an excellent lobster roll at a local clam shack, it was the same price and way better, so the comparison was fresh in my mind. I wouldn't go back here for the food but might stop in sometime if I was driving through and had no where else to go.
Review Source:After being told that there had been a "snafu" in the kitchen, and the rest of my family was served, I had a raw chicken dinner presented to me. Â I informed our server, who was clearly angry with the kitchen, and ordered a glass of wine. Â Another entree was offered to me, but by this time, my family had almost finished their dinners so I declined. I was most bothered after receiving our bill and finding that we had been billed for an "a la carte" baked potato (which was the only part of my dinner that I ate) and my wine.
After simmering at home for a bit, I called the owner, nicely explained my concern, and was told that she would "comp" a baked potato the next time I come in. Â Unfortunately, there won't be a next time! Â (Just an FYI - ask if the regular chef, Kevin, is there. Â If not, take a pass! He wasn't working this night.)
