We love to try different places, well the Groupon made it possible for dinner 2/26/2013 Tuesday.
Well walking in there are two doors, one bar, one restaurant, take the restaurant. Yes the place is family run, four table at 7 PM, all families. The dining room is very basic, but very clean indeed. We ordered a steamed clam dish, lots of flavor (garlic, cilantro, olive oil) served right in the pot steamed in great for dipping bread in. That being said the bread was warm and very tasty, had the Mozambique Shrimp, we shared, plenty, the sauce was very simple, wine, hot sauce, some butter, however the shrimp were cooked perfectly, cut in half with the shell.on. The kale soup with the spicy sausage real nice and the green bean vegetable soup was flavorful but not has Hot as it could have been. The flan with caramel  sauce really was home made it tasted it very good, was a great finish.
A bit pricey for what it is, however, the quality was there, the heart to give great service was there, the bottle of wine was priced right, overall a nice evening out.
Ate at the Solmar yesterday for lunch while in town with a friend. Â On first walk-in, the place seems kind of like a diver neighborhood bar. Â There were a few patrons at the bar watching any one of several sports games on flat panel televisions. Â We grabbed a table and noted that we were the only ones sitting down to eat.
We ordered our drinks and then each grabbed one of the two specials (Mozambique Shrimp and Pork Chops). Â We were surprised at the breadth of the menu though and thought it a tad bit expensive for that neighborhood. Â Once our meals came though, we were convinced that the price was fair. Â The food was surprisingly good, and plenty of it. Â I want thrilled with the Mozambique sauce though, but can overlook that. Â The shrimp was great and I couldn't believe how much of it they dished out.
The place seems to be family run, from the cooks, to the bartenders to the waitress. Â They were interested in how we liked our dishes, and seemed genuinely happy that we enjoyed them. Â Toward the end of our meal, the cook came out from the kitchen and offered us some fresh "home made" peanut butter cookies right from the oven. Â They were admittedly very good. Â Seeing that we liked them, they thought to start bringing us other flavor cookies, to which I did not have the willpower to turn down.
All in all, it was a good time, with good food. Â They were decorating for Christmas while I was there, and it seemed to be very much of a family type affair, almost as if I was the guest in someones home. Â This was of course Lunch. Â It may have a different feel for dinner, especially on weekend nights.... At any rate, this place will be on my "list" for the next time I'm in town.
Thanks Solmar!
