Welcome to some of the best coffee you could ever get your hands on! I love the selection of drinks -- it's actually overwhelming, but they've named them all quite creatively. Try the chai drinks including the Cheech and Chai, which has a dash of coconut and hemp milk. What's that saying? Oh yeah, it will have your taste buds buzzing! On my first visit here I also had the Mary Jane latte, which I think the barista got a kick out of me ordering by the smirk on his face. You can't get this full-bodied, non-bitter taste at Starbucks!

The added bonus of coming here on the weekends is the live music from 8-10 pm! It's too bad there isn't more of a crowd because the artists are talented. I try to do my best to support them as much as I can.

Cute gifts and books at the front of the shop. Everything is more of the metaphysical vibe which I can dig.

Decor and furniture is a little eclectic -- burlap bags on the ceiling, stained glass lamps, confetti-like streamers, guitars on the walls, couches for lounging, wooden tables for studying, etc.

Cons: The drinks are pricy. For a mug that is pushing 10 oz but is sold as "12 oz" it's almost $4.50 on average. Guess you're paying for the good taste and uniqueness of the place. Also, I wish it was closer to Seattle because I would definitely be a daily customer and I think they would garner bigger crowds for their shows.

If you're in the Kirkland/Redmond area, and looking for proper coffee, this would be the place.

I'm a coffee fiend, snob, and overzealous critic. (Non-Professional, of course.)

Lever-Pull Espresso machines, in my humble opinion, make a superior shot of coffee.  This place has a very nice one.  (And is one of three places that has one that I know of.)

The roast is flavorful, without being overpowering.  It is also not over-roasted like many places are these days.  (I blame Starbucks.)

The people are very nice.  It's a fairly quiet place that also acts as a new-agey book and crystal type store.  (A touch hippie-like for my tastes, but I'm only here for the coffee.)

The vibe is relaxing, and it's right next to the craft store that my wife frequents.  So while she's looking at yarn and whatnot, I can sit and drink coffee.

I've had some very nice conversations with the baristas here, and they really do know their craft.  The other thing about lever-pull machines is that you really do have to know what you're doing to effectively work one.

I always feel welcome, invited, and not rushed here.  I greatly appreciate those things.

None of that snobby coffee house attitude here! This is an awesome space with great coffee and lots of selection. Art, music, books, a kid's area and plenty of room to relax. And the staff was incredibly nice. Craig and Taylor were the baristas and made some awesome recommendations!

SoulFood has a great atmosphere. Loved browsing the books and trinkets. My friend and I both got dirty chais and they were made very well. The barista was so friendly and he even made little heart-shaped rosettas in our drinks even though we were getting them to-go. It was quite a bit pricier than normal, but well worth it. Can't wait to come back.

Redmond has a wealth of Starbucks and Tully's but very few quality independents. So I was very pleased when I discovered this place on Yelp. It has every I want from an independent coffee house and a lot more.

First the basics: Good Coffee, good Non-Coffee drinks, nice food choices, wifi, plenty of seating and a comfortable environment. (No drive-thru but I don't expect that from an indie coffee shop).

SoulFood Books excels in their non-coffee offerings. They have an amazing collection of Chai drinks and non-caffeinated options. They also excel in their atmosphere, it's very hippie but in the good ways. Gordon Lightfoot music in the background, a casual stress-free atmosphere with comfortable environment suitable for working or quiet discussions. Finally, their open spaces provide that great feel of a Pacific Northwest environment.

This is one of my favorite places of all time. It's a unique and cozy coffee shop/gift store with a warm and comfortable atmosphere. There is plenty of seating, to include tables, couches, bar stools, and a bench out front. There are various instruments hanging on the walls, to include several guitars, which clientele are welcome to play while frequenting the business.

I've spent Saturdays and Sundays here writing in front of my laptop while drinking a variety of delicious coffees and teas and snacking on sandwiches, hummus, and other snacks prepared by the baristas and then watched the night transition as tables are pushed back to make way for chairs encircling the stage to encompass the musical talent. The talent is always a bit different and off the cusp, but warm, welcoming, and wonderful.

A very relaxing, community oriented, coffee shop. Good drinks, amazing chairs and a wonderful staff truly makes this a zen heaven. It's both a little stuffy and yet open ended in it's decor ultimately filling one with the other. I'm not a person who typically embraces a pure new age style this place represents but it is a good counterpoint to the daily stress the week brings.

Originally I ventured into this shop thinking it was a bookstore, but it is actually a hodgepodge of groovy stuff inside a generic strip mall facade. Immediately, I noticed the cafe with a display filled with delectable muffins and goodies. After getting a cup of joe, you can relax in a lounge chair and read or enjoy one of the bands that plays on stage during select evenings. On the other side of the shop, you can find a kiddie corner, homeopathic display, another lounge area with a fountain, and a display of some local goods like honey.

I didn't lounge for long, but my interest was piqued enough that I might peak in again.

I've been at SoulFood Books many times before this but have never attempted to drink or eat anything here. There's a nice energy in here, friendly staff, nice smiles, cool books, independent music, art, gifts, candles, crystals, tarot readings, etc. There's literally something for everyone...almost!

However, this place is a Celiac's nightmare (or at least my nightmare...I literally have nightmares regularly about this type of situation where I'm told something is gluten-free and then I get horribly, violently ill from cross-contamination after I bite into it)!

I went in today for the first time to meet some friends, have some tea and hopefully find a tasty gluten-free, vegan treat. After ordering my genmai-cha, I asked if they had any dedicated gluten-free and vegan snacks. I was pointed to the top two muffins in the case that were gluten-free but not vegan. I pointed out to the man that they were in the same case as all the other pastries, so they would all be cross-contaminated. He didn't comment or try to figure out how they could better serve customers who needed the gluten-free items to absolutely be 100% gluten-free. But at least he acknowledged it by nodding his head, which I thought meant he was in agreement. Then he pointed me in the direction of the Trio Bars, which all of them have cashews (allergic to that!), but at least they were gluten-free and vegan....HOWEVER...they were also in the same case as all the gluten items, which would be cross-contaminated for someone with Celiac disease. Had I not been allergic to the Trio bars I still wouldn't eat anything that was housed in a case full of gluten items, particularly on the bottom shelf. Then he pointed me to the chips and hummus, also on the bottom shelf, which were gluten-free and vegan, but those were also in the gluten case, and uncovered...which means they would also be cross-contaminated. If gluten-free items are uncovered and on the bottom shelf, I think there is higher risk for someone with Celiac disease to be cross-contaminated.

Coming to an organic coffee house/new age store, I was hoping for more sensitivity to people with multiple food allergies but I guess I've gotten so used to my favorite dedicated gluten-free bakery in Redmond that I never have to venture outside of it unless friends want to go somewhere else.

If they really wanted to be sensitive to the needs of people with Celiac disease they could remedy the problem easily. They could 1) clearly label what's in their cases and list ingredients. 2) Separate the gluten items from the gluten-free items. 3) Take the Trio Bars out of the case and put them in a separate location. I suggest they remove the gluten cross-contamination of the Trio Bars somehow or just having a separate stash for people with Celiac disease that haven't been inside a gluten-filled case. 4) Flying Apron Bakery in Redmond has dedicated gluten-free, vegan treats in their own packaging (such as PB Joy)...and if they kept those in the refrigerator or on top of the counter, away from gluten items in a case....that would be the best scenario. 5) Get the chips and hummus out of the case filled with gluten items! And cover them with Saran wrap tightly.

As for me, I will be staying clear of this place for tea and food anyway. If they change their practices around gluten and/or dairy items I would consider going back. I thought their genmai-cha tea was okay but $3.25 is expensive for a cup. I guess I prefer an actual tea house where I can get a small pot of tea for that price.

My 4th annual review.  I come to Soul Books regularly for coffee, and will continue doing so.  Though my past reviews have all been 4 star, this year it has edged to a 3--but still good.

Hard to put my finger on what has changed to cause me to knock off a star.  The food, drinks, and products remain consistent with the past - so see my past reviews for details on that. I think it is the atmosphere which has suffered--it used to energize me, but recently it rather infuses me with a sense of ennui.  Perhaps it is we customers who have changed, losing some of our spirit.  Or -- maybe "I" am the problem.  Hmmm... could be an opportunity for self-reflection--and Soul Books offers plenty of books and other material that can assist me with that.

Left this cafe feeling refreshed, not just from the coffee, but from the atmosphere.  The baristas were the warmest, most interesting people.  The store itself is bright, airy, and eclectic. A great place to pass a lazy Saturday afternoon. And the drink selection is awesome too! So many coffee and tea creations to return for!

I'll be honest, this place is a little too hippie (new-aged? Is that more PC?) for me. While I am completely over exaggerating, I feel like I'm exuding hemp right now. Regardless, I'm still intrigued by this place (as a new resident of the Pacific Northwest, I'm still enthusiastic about all of the fun coffee shops around). Despite the decor/interior (which really has an impressive book selection & plenty of seating), I'm keeping SoulFood on my caffeine radar because I adored the selection of drinks. Given my aversion to dairy & soy, I was elated to see that they offer almond, rice and hemp substitutes. I ultimately ordered the 12oz Chai of the Tiger with almond milk, and while it was pricey at $5.11, I'm completely pleased with my decision. I ordered my drink to-go & subsequently strolled through Trader Joe's with a delectable warm beverage in hand. I may not be planning a day-long laptop session at SoulFood books, but I am looking forward to stopping in & trying more that they have to offer. Not to mention, the young gentleman working there (with the long ponytail) was incredibly sweet and friendly.

I was looking to explore a new local coffee shop so I went to Yelp for the reviews. Of the non-chains in Redmond, this place had some pretty fantastic reviews and it did not disappoint.  The barrista, who I also suspect was one of the owners, was very pleasant. She was very gracious about giving me the details of some of the chai teas despite them being printed on the menu - I couldn't read them because I had left my glasses in the car, but she didn't know that.

I decided to try the Chai of the Tiger, a chai tea latte with chocolate and espresso, but sans espresso (I don't drink coffee).  She was kind enough to even figure out how to ring up  a custom drink so I wasn't getting charged for something I wasn't having.  My husband decided to go with the barrista's choice and ended up with a delicious chocolate coconut latte.  Our friend was extremely pleased with his iced Americano and even commented several times on the quality of the coffee.

The place itself is definitely a unique combination of new-age book/gift store and a coffee shop, with a delightfully pleasant and cozy atmosphere.  There's plenty of couch and table seating, there's a small kids' corner with toys and books, and the background music is just the right volume.

THIS PLACE. As a 20-something living on the East Side, I have been yearning for a coffee shop that has a little bit of the punch and pizzazz of more urban locales. This place delivers - whimsical decor and an awesome crowd of folks. The baristas are kind, wonderful people. Their niceness makes you feel validated as a human being. I think that I visited 3 times last weekend (which is not financially sustainable, but... whatever. It's an infatuation).

Their coffee is delicious. I'm no coffee connoisseur, but after drinking Starbucks day after day I wanted to crawl into my soy americano with agave syrup. And their baked goods are kickin'. Try the carrot
    cake!

Their live music is pretty good, too. It's really special to have a place nearby where I can support local artists.

    GO NOW. DON'T WAIT.

Soul Food Books is one of my must-stop requests when we visit friends in Redmond. From the outside, it looks like a big bookstore, but step inside and you'll realize this is more than that. The front features new-age books, incense, candles, honey, lotions, and more, all for sale. The back of the store sells coffee, teas, baked goods and the most delicious chai (they get the blend from somewhere in WA state). Want to sit for awhile? Find a cozy seat or couch to relax and re-charge, plus there is a spot at the front of the store just for kids with books and toys. They even have tarot card readings (daily it seems), poetry nights, open mic, drum circles and music.

Don't be put off by the vibe and worry that you "won't fit in". I've come here several times with my husband and even in a group with little kids in tow. Every barista is friendly and welcoming and I've never felt out of place here.

    Love!

I came here with a friend for the evening's musical performance, not knowing anything about the place, and I felt like I'd somehow ended up in Bellingham or somewhere, not Redmond!

I ordered a latte, which was good. Because we were there for the performance, we mostly sat and watched rather than really looking around. I was a little confused at the title of SoulFood BOOKS, as it didn't really seem like a bookstore.

I can tell this place attracts a wide variety of clientele, which is awesome. I don't think I really "fit in," but no one looked at me askance or anything. If you're looking for a place that's off the beaten path (literally & figuratively!) in Redmond, this would be a good little place to check out.

Or if you need hippie goods. I think they're good for that, too.

This place is hidden, right in plain sight! I've been driving by forever, visiting the Trader Joe's, the yoga studio and the craft store in the same shopping center for so many years!

Stopped in on this rainy day today with some girlfriends to sit, catch up and enjoy some hot beverages.

The place is totally chill, the owners are super friendly and chatty. We spent a good amount of time talking to them before we tucked ourselves away in a quiet corner to chat.

In addition to some delicious looking goodies, they have a lot of gift ideas to browse.

    Will be back, for sure!

Although I am a self-proclaimed coffee addict I have never actually gotten a beverage from SoulFood. Instead I come in here to look at the alternative books, stone jewelry, and to get incense.

    PROS:
-This place has a good vibe/atmosphere.
-The owners and employees are all very friendly and laid-back.
-They have some cool stuff that isn't sold anywhere else in the area.
-The location is convenient, right by Ben Franklin.

    CONS:
-I almost feel like I am not cool enough or low-key enough to really spend sometime here.

    OVERALL:
This is a neat shop that is worth checking out.

I went in for the first time yesterday. I am a tea drinker and what impressed me the most was their large selection of loose tea. I had a coconut green tea and it tasted like heaven.

The people there are really nice and open. The barista I talked to made me feel right at home. It is a very relaxed environment. I sat on one of the comfy couches to read and the cozy environment was ideal for that.  I found the music to be nice and it was refreshing to hear something interesting and different.

I can see how this place could be really fun to go to , especially for the poetry readings and live music. I love that this shop is like a community, as well as a nice coffee/tea shop. They also sell interesting things, which I didn't get a chance to look at, but will next time. I am glad they are not a cash only place, like I thought it was going to be.

I'll definitely be bringing friends and family here and will be back again!

Some of the most wonderful folks you'll ever find!  After about 60 other coffee shop reviews (and over 550 total reviews) and  and two years later, still the best coffee shop ALL AROUND you'll ever find!  Service, coffee, gift/book shop, special events, people..... BEST, BEST, BEST!

While you may be able to get a more exquisite latte mentioned in my other reviews, you will not ever find a shop that is a community, family, and "tribe" as they like to call themselves anywhere. It's a healthy mix of hippies, yuppies, new agers, floaters, geeks, musicians, artists, and other eclectic types (said affectionately) with a minimal number of haters and arrogant schmucks.  And while I never quite blended in (military, biker Vet type), they received me as they do anyone who treats them with at least neutrality.

When I started going here, (they all use to be at a nearby other shop before creating Soul Food), I'd sit on the front porch (of the other shop), with my psychotherapy book, cigar, sun glasses and USMC hat pulled down over my shades, keeping to myself, trying to read, and listening to them drone on and on about their chakras, magic quartz crystals, goddesses, Bill Clinton, sage smudgings, mother earth, and those wascally wepubwicans, often dismayed at how their damnable patchouli sometimes interfered with my Ashton VSG churchill cigar!

After some seven years on this dance, I made some wonderful friends, learned a great deal from them, and left without a pocket of runes and pendulums.

Take the time to get to know Sara, Taylor, Craig, Steve, Joe, Deb and others. Some of the Best folks in the world

This is my favorite place to meet people for coffee/tea. I love the atmosphere, the books, the hippy vibe, ph, and the coffee is pretty good too.

One of the things I love is the choice of milks, including hemp and almond, I also love that there are 2 shots in the small coffee!!

We sometimes go to open mike night and it is always worth the visit, though finding a seat may be a challenge.

If you like independent businesses, free-spirits, friendly people, great coffee, decent snacks/light meals, then this is the place for you.

I didn't realize this business was anything more than a conventional coffee shop,  so I was surprised by the New Age theme and merchandise. It reminded of the type of place you'd find in Boulder, Colorado some 20 years ago.

A cup of drip coffee was very expensive, but the people were friendly, and the environment was pretty peaceful. The seating area is expansive, so you get a fair amount of space to yourself, and they play tranquil music. A very nice place.

I require Soul Food Books (and coffee) like a hermit crab requires a shell. They are unique in their fantastic owners (Sarah and Clint), friendly and long-serving barristas and staff, cosy atmosphere, local art and really delicious lattes. I got there as much as I can to write when I need a place just noisy enough to feel energised and quiet enough to focus. When I need to meet with friends in the area I try to go there too as the vibe and the staff make it condusive to great conversation and laughs. They have a large selection of new-age/philsophical/contemplative books but also crafts and art from lots of locals and I've picked up several pieces of jewelry for my wife over the years. A true PNW coffeehouse in every way, they even have a stage for passing troubadours and scheduled performers and stream events and concerts on their website. Did  mention I love it? :)

Protip: easier parking hidden behind the store, don't spend your time fighting scrapbookers camping the Ben Franklin spots

Ok, I am not a person who is super into new agey kind of stuff: but this place actually may change me.

I walked over this morning and got an americano, and it was delicious! The girl at the register, Anika, introduced herself and apologized for it taking a couple minutes for my order to get rung up. She was sweet as pie.

I enjoyed my americano, and will come back on my days off, and you never know, maybe I will become new-agey.

Wow, do I love this place! The baristas are friendly here, and let's not forget the coffee too. It's never burnt and it all tastes so great. The pastries are great too, and they're from Hancock's Bakery just up the street.

It's in the middle of an ugly strip mall by Trader Joe's, but don't just pass it up like I have been. It's a really great place to just come in and relax for a moment. I can't say "I love it here" enough. You don't feel rushed to leave at all either. Come in and take a load off - it's worth your time!

People, don't come here.  Stay away.  This is my special hole-in-the-wall bookstore/cafe that I can escape from the wild mess that is called Starbucks down the street.  And once you come to SFB, you'll be hooked, like me.

No but really, I love this place.  The baristas here are genuine and down-to-earth chill.  And oooooh do those men have nice style!  I came here on a Saturday, and all the guys were dressed up in classy button-up shirts, ties, and vests.  I felt like Homer Simpson at a donut shop.

Aside from the fantastic coffee and baristas, this is an awesome place to do whatever-- read, relax, poke around the infinite number of books, get your Picasso on and check out the art pieces, do your own paintings, or consult with a psychic-- you name it!

    So people.  Be forewarned!

A really chill and comfortable coffee shop with books, a bonus. Service was super friendly and the coffee is tasty.  New age decor and music but very inviting.

I think I was sniffing the incense a little too much because I almost got a tarot card reading towards the end of my visit.

Too bad I didn't get inspired to draw anything but I was super relaxed. Definitely a great place to hang out and do some soul searching.

Great relaxing atmosphere, friendly crowd, good music. A little welcome community more than a book store and coffee shop. A strange sight for a high-tech mecca such as Redmond, but not an unwelcome one. It's like stepping into a different reality for a short while.

Pastries are great, coffee is top notch too. Don't care much for the new-age products, but if you're into that kind of lifestyle then you will find yourself right at home.

Okay, here I was, happily living in Ballard....

And - now a glitch in my happiness!
SoulFood Books, being in Redmond, is, like, really far away!  (Couldn't you have just left me alone?  I was content!)

Wow.  What a place, what a shiny, caring group of people.  And one thing I really, really love about this place, is that, unlike so many of its "ilk" (whatever you want to call that ilk), the average patron is NOT close to retirement age!   Hey, that's rare.  And the young people who were at the (free) gathering I attended at SoulFood last night were all lovely, not the least bit snooty to those of us over 50, nor to those in the crowd who were closer to 70.  It was perfection, from the ambiance, to the warm and gracious hosting...

And then I find out that two famous astrologers I'm aware of come there every month.  They're locals!  Who knew?

If you can get past a bit of (what some may find hokey) mysticism and earth magic, settle in here on a Saturday night for open mic night. Granted we walked up while some guy was unashamedly belting flat notes while playing cover songs on his guitar, but the mood evened out into some calming flute music, what had to have a been a high school boy with the most beautiful voice and great songs, and also a couple other high school kids (come to think of it there were a lot of high school kids hanging out)-one on keyboard and one on soundbites which made for a very interestingly unique sound. The store also has a unique selection of books, beautiful jewelry, incense and other related items. I found the most amazing smelling incence made from rock called Moldavite from a crater that landed on earth billions of years ago. It's said to have a pulsating energy.

I have to say though, I was disappointed in how many plastic cups I saw. For a "natural" cafe, I would have expected to see more "for here" mugs and glasses, or at least a clearer system for recycling the plastic cups and lips. But really, "for here" mugs are a MUST.

The first time I walked in the doors, there was this instant warm, positive energy about the place. It's a sparkly sensation.  I was meandering through the used CD's (picked up a couple CD's of Tibetan singing bowls) and on to the books, just absorbing. The part that struck me the most, the diversity of topics. There is a little something for EVERYONE. All are welcome.

While browsing, one of the staff members said hello and welcomed me to the store. He let me know a bit about the place, some of the events they have, and then I was holding a piece of an actual meteorite while having a conversation on conscious living and communities.

And then on towards the back half where the coffee and food are available.. Sleepy Monk organic fair trade coffees, prepared by genuinely friendly folks, very tasty and reasonably priced. And choice! Orgainc milk, soy milk, hemp milk, and more! The food items all look delicious but I've not yet tried them.

And the events! http://Tarot.com's Rick Levine and Jeff Jawer on the first Wednesday of every month, open mic nites, music, laughter, and above all else, COMMUNITY! It's a breath of fresh air, inspirational, and welcoming. A few comfy chairs, tables, and knowledgeable staff make this an instant favorite.

I can't say enough about this wonderful find. They grow flowers outside, encourage you to sit, read, relax a while, support local artists, inspire, create, build, and are organically growing a genuine community.

    Cheers!

You walk in, and immediately you feel the stress leave your body.  The earthiness, the people, their knowledge, the coffee "shop" with it's variety of teas and coffees and just the ambiance is relaxing.  Comfortable chairs, tables, read a book, knit, play on your computer, just be.  Everyone is really helpful here and willing to help.  Come on a Friday /Saturday evening for some great music, Sundays for the drum circle or the meditations, etc.  Just a great serene/spiritual place to be.

I've wandered into Soul Food Books quite a few times in the year I've lived in Redmond.  I hail from a rural hippie town and went to school at a hippie college so the atmosphere is welcome.
Each time I've gone into the store I've found the staff to be genuinely friendly and knowledgeable about the different products.  I have little ones in my family and enjoyed walking in there the other day for a children's book, where I picked up "The Land of Smaerd".  The people behind the counter invited me to an event for the launch of that book the next day, though I couldn't attend as the party for the kid was the next day and I would be giving her the book...anyway, I also appreciate the more expansive genres of children's books that go beyond cheesy rhyming.
I've tasted the coffee a few times and had equally friendly service.  The drinks themselves were also flavorful.

This is an interesting little store. I stopped in on a recent trip to craft mecca, Ben Franklin.

They have quite a few spiritual type books and other stuff like jewelery, inspiration cards, shirts, cds, incense, etc.

I generally find something I want in a store like this but their selection of non book stuff was a little sparse. Still, if you are into stuff like this you will probably like the store especially if you live on the east side.

From looking at their calender it looks like they have something going on pretty much every day of the week from: music, to tarot readers, to drumming, to meditation!

It's been a long time since I've seen a genuine hippie. This store really should be in Portland. I didn't head over to the new location for the wide selection of spiritual books though. I went for the Coffee. At my boss's suggestion, I went over there the other day to try the coffee. My boss says the old Victor's staff went over there. I think he's right, I recognized some faces. Indeed the staff, was phenomenally friendly. Really, I can't say enough about how nice they were. The store was very bright and happy in general, but it lack some of that bookstore comfort that a Barnes and Noble might have. I just didn't want to sit down for some reason. I think it's too open and airy. I want a nice corner to sit down and relax in. It lacks the character of Victors also, so that's not going for it either.

Also, the coffee is very smooth and easy to drink, but it lacks the full body of Victors or even (gasp!) Starbuck's .  Generally speaking, I like my coffee very strong, so you may like it if you're in to the lighter roasts. I also tasted my wife's vanilla latte. Strangely enough, it reminded me of vanilla soft serve. Very very mild... not for me.

Despite the stellar service, I doubt I'll make it back.

When you think of Seattle, this is the type of bookstore that might come to mind. In line with its name, most of the books are related to spirituality, the earth, love, life, health, and everything else that needs questioning.

Unlike some other bookstores in the area, Soulfood doesn't shove beliefs down your throat or seem preachy, even though it certainly is in a niche market. It is also much more organized, clean and welcoming than some of its competitors. Stop in and sit in the beanbags and read - the owners welcome your browsing.
