I just came here for a birthday party with a set menu of various items. First came the salad which included fruit, shavings of cheese and a raspberry vinaigrette. I am not one for fruit in my salad but the flavors worked surprisingly well! Next on the table were avocado chicken rolls with a spicy dipping sauce - we all devoured these as they were delicious. The salsa on the table was very good as well as it had a significant kick of spicyness and balanced consistency. For entrees, I got the shrimp fajitas and everything tasted really delicious - vegetables were not soggy and overcooked like some mexican joints screw up on. These were absolutely delicious and I ate almost everything. The staff were friendly and very attentive. Drinks were included with the birthday group so we were ordering many margaritas in which our waitress was very quick about! I also thought the Sangria tasted really good as i could pick up on the bourbon. I particularly love the decor and atmosphere. It really made me feel like I was in a mexican house and the whole vibe was very warm. I have not tried that much food here but I have to say that my experience was great and I look forward to coming back for a review update!
Review Source:I'm docking them two stars. Â I'm a little mad at them.
I went with my sister after a movie last night; we had a 6:30 res. Â We arrived at 6:45; this was due to the fact that South of the Border has no parking. Â They share their lot with, what, five other businesses? Â That might be a conservative estimate. Â One of those businesses is a pizzeria. Â We drove in and out of the lot twice; that involved making two u-turns to get back to South of the Border. Â Once we walked in, the hostess said, "Oh, it will be a twenty minute wait, and that's for a bar table..." Really? Â Because, literally, next to the hostess, was an empty table for four. Â If they had people waiting (which it didn't look like they did, but assuming, ok, they did), then why hadn't they sat them at this table? Â
We left. Â I wasn't going to wait twenty minutes to sit at a bar table when it was their parking situation that made us late in the first place. Â
Look, we could have called and explained, but it was just such a hassle trying to get a  spot that we didn't.  South of the Border needs a better parking situation.  I'll re-update when I'm less mad.
Overall rating: 3.5
I'm torn between a 3 and a 4 star rating because the establishment is small, and the wait time could become astronomical (anything over an hour is ridiculous because I can finish a whole meal in an hour). However, the food is delicious. Since this was my first time here, I asked my friends what they recommended and they said, "honestly, we haven't had anything we didn't like." That 's a good sign. So, I ordered the porkchop with cranberry sauce (I forget if that was a special or a normal menu offering) and it was cooked well and tasted delicious. Everyone else was pretty pleased with what they had also. The service was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere within the restaurant was lively (and by lively, I mean you sometimes have to shout over other people to even be heard by your own party).
Yummy yummy food. The complimentary chips and salsa were amazing, although the chips could've been hot. The guac was great. Everyone really enjoyed their food. All the entrees came with a lot of sides like black beans covered in cheese. Nom.
The place is seriously cute. Awesome decor that was fun to stare at. The walls were painted beautifully with adorable knick-knacks hanging.
The service was excellent. My waiter had a sense of humor, but not overbearingly so. It was a great experience. Can't wait to be back!!
Being a huge El Mariachi of rvc fan..i was looking for something in the Bethpage area. Service and staff was good..good was alright. Found it odd that they had lots of open tables but sat us right next to the kitchen. When we got the bill we almost fell off our seats. 2 margaritas each was more then our entire food bill. Entirely over priced for such run of the mill food and watered down margaritas. Have no desire to go back there.
Review Source:I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food so I don't feel "qualified" to write a review for this restaurant so don't depend on my review! Â I came here with the boyfriend because he remembered it being good. Â The waiter said the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes so we had to order quickly. Â I told my boyfriend to choose everything. Â He ordered a bunch of different things for me to try. Â The guacamole was quite tasty. Â Also the ceviche was good. Â Everything seemed fresh and the staff was nice and accommodating. Â The waiter was trying to push us into buying drinks from the bar which was a little annoying. Â I've read in other reviews that the drinks are pricey and I guess that's a money maker. Â The only thing we both didn't really care for were the chimichangas (spelling?). Â Anyways, overall the food was good and I have a lot of leftovers waiting for me in my refrigerator. Â Also, the boyfriend left an expensive tie behind and as we were pulling out one of the staff members came running out with it which was very nice!
Review Source:Pretty solid, fairly authentic free standing Mexican joint in Levittown.
This place likes to play up the atmosphere to keep it light and fun, you will know what I mean when you get there.
The food always seems fresh and flavorful, the bar is always packed and ready to make you some fantastic margaritas, the wait staff is extremely friendly and attentive.
Prices are a bit higher than what you would expect for Mexican, but nothing outrageous.
There is better Mexican food out there, no question, but in the area, this may be one of the best, definitely worth a try.
I am really not a fan of Mexican food and really need to be in the mood for it in order to go to a restaurant, but this place changed my mind. Â I've passed it for years always seeing it quite packed but only recently tried it from the recommendation of a friend. The food here is delicious, I can say I've only ever ordered the Chicken Quesadillas but they were amazing. Â The food was really fresh and delicious, the sangria also is a nice treat as well. Will def be returning here in the future.
Review Source:Fresh food, good service, great atmosphere, a little on the expensive side but worth checking out...
The food is pretty well prepared, although it is definitely a "suburban mexican restaurant". Â An observation i made last night; the portions are relatively small and expensive, but the food is very good/excellent quality, so that's ok. Â I'd rather have 3 delicious shrimp than 12 tiny, barely edible shrimp.
Bottom line, it is worth checking out (for sure), but there's a reason I only go here once every 3 or 4 years...
South of the Border is always really busy. Relatively expensive drinks. The music is on the loud side.
Really good food though, though not the least bit authentic. That doesn't take anything away from the taco plate or the chorizo quesadillas, both of which are delicious.
This is the sort of place you go with a group. Might be a fun place to go for lunch too. But it is what it is, a loud, chain Mexican restaurant.
You can't miss at this place. No matter what day of the week you come the food is outstanding. Be prepared to wait a little on the weekends, but it's like that anywhere you go. Try the sampler. It has something for everyone and will not disappoint. Pair it with a pitcher of margaritas and you will like you're in a restaurant in Mexico. The pitcher is a bit pricey, but well worth it. If you're looking for authentic Mexican cuisine then this is the spot for you.
Review Source:After our last visit here, we decided to write this place off. Â Had a pitcher of sangria that was WAYoverpriced and contained minimal alcohol. Â I must admit that the food is pretty good. Our real beef tho' is with the loud disco music which doesn't exactly set the atmosphere in a Mexican restaurant. Â We were seated right below the ceiling speaker and couldn't carry on a conversation at the table. Â When I asked the waitress to turn the volume down, she replied that the staff liked to keep the music loud as it helped to keep their energy up. Â I guess that what the customer wants doesn't matter......
Review Source:Great food made even better by the friendly and efficient service. Everything was first rate starting with the home made salsa. Just enough spice to make it interesting. Clearly it was home made.
Each and every entree in our party of 4 was cooked to perfection. We were lucky enough to meet the owners, and even they were nice.
This is a real gem. Â We definitely plan a return visit.
I've been here a few times and have had some pretty good meals. I came a few weeks ago with some friends and ordered the combination platter (a burrito, taco, and enchilada with beans and rice) and it was definitely tasty! Not the best I've ever had, but probably some of the best on Long Island. Our service was REALLY slow which was strange as it was a weekday night but I wasn't too bothered. I didn't get a margarita but I tasted a few of my friends' and the strawberry was definitely the best in my book.
Review Source:Great atmosphere at night (perfect date spot), lots of vegetarian friendly options.
If you go with the intention of having a drink make sure the small blonde girl is not behind the bar. If she is I'd stick with bottled beer...
In the Summer they open up the front doors, which is nice if you would like a table with a view of Wantagh Avenue.
Only once out of numerous times dining here was I upset. I'll give a place that time to make a minor mistake. Plus, perhaps it was me ordering steak was the mistake. RHYME. But overall, an amazkng place for food and drinks. Fantastic service and real Mexico feel...until you step back out into Levittown. They need one in Wantagh.
Review Source:We started coming to South of the Border, when it's sister restaurant in East Meadow, South of the Border BBQ, closed down (which was the worst tragedy in Long Island eating!) We like this place, no doubt about that, good food, good service, nice atmosphere, etc etc, but it lacks whatever it was about South of the Border BBQ that made it a 5-star restaurant. The food isn't quite as flawless, the service isn't quite as friendly, the first margarita I had there was actually so gross I sent it back, the atmosphere is more formal and less airy than the other restaurant, it's absolutely more expensive, and there is no written drink menu, which sucks for indecisive people like myself. I probably would have given this restaurant four stars if I didn't know about the absolute perfection that was South of the Border BBQ, but to me, it'll never replace it.
Review Source:You know how you pass something and you look at it but don't take the time to take a good, long look at it but every time you pass it again, you make sure you notice it? (Wow, that sounded a lot more coherent in my head).
Anyway, SOTB is one of these places that I look longingly at whenever I drive on Wantagh Avenue. You can't help but notice it, at the end of your generic strip mall is a little Mexican style casita addition that I want to call pueblo but I know that's not right. The windows glow a subtle red and give off the glimmer of small, multi-colored lights regardless of whether it's Christmas or not. I love kitsch and that's at the supreme for me, atmosphere is everything! Finally, last week I decided to stop off and have some lunch.
I was definitely early for dinner because I was the only customer in the whole place, however, it was 4:30 and I know that's the in-between time. I chose a small table amid the tiled floors and large, artificial foliage. It was cozy and dark as I suspected and I wished I had a companion and that it was late enough to have a margarita because the atmosphere is damn inviting. With good company, I could imagine sitting here and socializing the night away.
I ordered the Tacos al Carbon and was given a complimentary small silver bowl of tortilla chips and some mid-level spicy sauce, while tasty it was very pureed and warm. My dish arrived which was grilled steak with sautéed mushrooms, onions and green peppers wrapped in a large tortilla and cut in half. It had a scoop of rice and refried beans on the side along with a large scoop of very fresh guacamole. It was served in a skillet which gave a nice effect but helped the oil run around the whole plate so I couldn't really pick up my tortilla but had to use a knife and fork and my plate as a whole kind of melded together. I expect that at Taco Bell, but not at $16.95 a plate. The rice was dry, yellow rice and tasted not unlike generic box rice. The beans were obviously homemade, but nothing stood out taste wise.
Overall, my first experience was a middle-of-the-road one. I can't say I'd go out of my way to eat here again based on that, but I would try it again for tapas or some holiday cocktails, because it looks like a really fun place to hang out just with more people instead of me and Javier the busboy
REAL DEAL Mexican food... Mi gusta.
The food comes out Speedy Gonzalez quick, and it is served HOT like the Mexican sun. Quesadillas, Enchilladas, Burritos, and Tacos.. all delicioso. I recommend the chicken quesadillas mucho.... Most meals are served with a bean concoction and a bed of spanish/mexican rice.
The place is nice too. I wouldn't pick those colors for my house, but for a Mexican restaurant it seems to work well.
Three's a charm? Not so much. The first time I visited South of the Border, I found my chimichangas to be ok, but bland. The second time, I didn't really enjoy my steak. The third time, the obnoxious disco music they were playing was just way too much and the food was still just ok. The third star I give the place comes from the kind service and the cozy decor. It's a shame that the disco music ruined anything good. I have no plans to return, but it's not to the point that I won't go back if that's where friends are intent on going. We have plenty of better Mexican restaurants in the area.
Review Source:I was brought here by a friend who insisted that I was missing out and wow were they right. I've passed it before on the road but never really paid much attention. It's a nice small cozy restaurant where the staff treats you as family. I am a big fan of the nachos with chorizo as well as the steak fajitas. The flautas were also very good. I can't forget to add how good those margaritas were as well. Ever since coming here for the first time I have returned numerous times. I would recommend it for a nice Mexican dinner or even just to have some drinks by the bar tables. It's a little pricier than most similar Mexican restaurants but I feel it's worth it.
Review Source:I've been here twice and each time I've been underwhelmed. The restaurant is small and cozy but none of the ambiance can make up for the fact that it is ridiculously expensive for Mexican food. Service was so-so as was the food. I came here for New Years Eve (we made reservations since the place is so tiny) with a group of 5 and the bill was over $200! I almost vomited! We each ordered a drink and we got nachos and guacamole for apps then our meals. I can't believe that it averaged $40 a person for 1 drink, 1/2 an app and a dinner! For a hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in Levittown!!! The portions weren't even that big; there were no left overs. I don't recommend this restaurant and I don't think I will ever be back.
Review Source:My boyfriend and i went a few days ago. Â the place is very clean and the staff is friendly. Â the food on the other hand is not up to par. Â the food is expensive and the portions are small. Â in addition, the food was on our table in less than 5 minutes from ordering. Â that to me is not freshly cooked. Â i'm not a great cook, but I do know that it takes more than 5 minutes to cook food. Â
go to taco bell for the same food that is much cheaper.
I came here 3 times so far. The first time a friend from Lindenhurst brought us here. It was so good, the drinks, the atmosphere, everything. Came by another time after my boyfriend and I had just left a wedding and we were craving guacomole. We got the ceviche app and guacomole with chips. It was pretty good but not as great as I remembered.
Since my best friends moved to Wantagh, I figured this was a good place to take them to. Â Well my friend (who can often be picky and judgemental about food) loved what she got! It was a seafood dish in a cream sauce. It was cooked very well and tasty.
I forgot that most of the appetizers are $9.00 and up and dinners are no cheaper then about $15.00. Â The food is good but I think it is on the expensive side for the portions which are average. I also was not crazy about the guac. As my boyfriend says, it is a little runny. Most of the dishes are ala carte. My other friend and I got the veggy burritos (mine was actually just cheese) which only came with refried beans and lettuce.( I believe this was one of the cheapest dinners on the menu). We had to order guac and sour cream on the side which adds up to another $6+ each. As you can see by my pic, to pay $20 something dollars for a cheese burrito(3 small ones) seems kind of steep. For me, Id rather go to Gonzos or someplace and get 1 large burrito that comes with everything for less then $8.00....I would definitely come again and prob just get an appetizer and a drink or something because its too over priced.
This seems to be the place to go on a weekend. You should definitely make reservations. We were so hungry and decided to sit outside which was probably a poor choice. The mosquitos were out, the table was not too sturdy, we had a great view of the parking lot, and people were rudely smoking cigarettes near us when we were clearly eating our dinner. If you have the money to spend, check out South of the Border, if you are poor like me, save your money and go somewhere else.
This is a great little place. Â The staff is very friendly and down to earth. Â The food is awesome, and the drinks are delicious. Â Great for family, friends and dates. Â It has a very cozy and authentic feel!
The food is always consistent, the portions are also very generous, and the bartenders can definitely make a margarita!! Â
The restaurant, although on the small side, can accomodate large parties, I would definitely call ahead just to be on the safe side.
In addition to a full bar, where patrons can be seated and have meals at, the bar area has 4 high top tables that each sit two. Â Food can also be served there as well. Â
The only downside is very minor but should be noted: The waiting area is very small, if you go with a party larger than five you will literally be crammed in the entrance. Â You would be more comfortable if you waited outside for your table. Â The only real down side to waiting outside would be during the winter months, when it is cold. Â
*However during the warmer months they put tables outside and open the front doors for an open air restaurant feel, which is absolutely fabulous. Â
I have been coming here since they opened, I live right down the block and have tried all of the local mexican restaurants, and this by far is the best. Â Nothing compares to the food, service, cleaniness and atmosphere this place has.
I've been to South of the Border several times. Very friendly and accommodating staff and consistent in the quality of food which is excellent. I love the Fajitas and if you happen to be in the mood for shrimp, there's a dish called "Camarones Veracruz". The shrimp is sauteed in a red sauce, garlic and wine. It's out of this world!! Guacamole is made to perfection and if you love Mojito's, you have to try one at South of the Border. Just make sure you're not driving because they're potent and definitely don't have one if you're on your lunch hour!! For dessert, I recommend the fried ice cream. There are other less expensive Mexican restaurants in the area but South of the Border is definitely more upper scale and romantic.
Review Source:Nice atmosphere excellent service and wonderful drinks too ..Oh and yes the food is great too .They start you off with`fresh made Salsa that has just the right  amount of kick for those with wimpy tongues.
You can request to have your dish kicked up a notch too.So when your in the area definitely head South Of The Border
