I've been here a few times since it reopened under the new name, and it's an incredible improvement over the old place. Â The food, decor, and service are all much, much better. Â The food is a typical upscale bar and grill menu - wings, flatbread pizzas, some sandwiches, a few light entrees. Â Everything I have tried has been solid. Â They have a decent selection of draft beers on tap, and an extensive list of bottled beers. Â Prices seem very reasonable. Â In that sense, this place is just afantastic addition to the Valpo dining scene. Â Exactly what we needed here.
Here's the downside: they are really uptight about reservations, and can get a bit rude if you don't have one. Â Last time I was there, the "greeter" said, "OK, I can give you a table, but promise me you'll be gone in an hour." Â Really?! Â I understand that folks with reservations get priority, but like I said before this is essentially a good-quality, mid-range bar and grill. Â It isn't the kind of place that should even take reservations. Â If I'm actually planning that far ahead to go out to eat, I'm probably going to end up somewhere else.
I had an awful experience. All I wanted to do was walk in the bar with see friends and get a couple drinks. They didn't serve us since we didn't have a reservation to sit at the bar stools. I will never go back. The staff was rude and ignored us. I would not recommend this place if you are just trying to stop in and grab a drink. It's not a true bar.
Also I read a comment on stacks Facebook page who has the same complaint as me. Whoever runs the page was rude to the women with the complaint. The owner of the bar commented to the woman that her attitude would fit a Chili's restaurant, not his bar. I was appalled.
My wife and I are always looking for something good to eat and it seems most places we spend our money at we should have just gone to White Castle and ate! However Stacks Bar & Grill is not one of those places. This place is set in a building of offices but once you go thru their door you forget where you are at. I have now eaten here twice and plan on going back with others. I had the stuffed chicken the first time and really enjoyed it and the second time had the Blackened tuna set on a bed of risotto which was excellent! I'm looking forward to going back soon just to have that again! I had to stab my wife with my fork because she was trying to eat it all! Both times I went I had the tuna for the appetizer and must say it was great! The price point is average and you leave satisfied.
