We wish this diner was better. Prices are very high for mediocre food and service. But we live in the Kentlands and its easy to walk to for a burger or club sandwich. They open too late during the week for breakfast, a stable of any great diner. I fear they survive due to the location.
Review Source:Our server was extremely personable but that is where the positive experience ended. She didn't write down our order but assured us that it would be correct. Well, she was wrong. Two of the three orders were completely incorrect and the third was partially wrong. In addition, when I got the correct omelette, it was totally tasteless. We were not impressed.
Review Source:We really want to like this place. It's in the heart of the Kentlands and we've visited several times over the years. The food is usually decent, but the service is slow (like others have said here). It's in need of renovations -- not well-maintained or even clean. The food is already overpriced and their up-charges add insult to injury (Add 2.99 to *substitute* sweet potato fries? Really?). Their coffee is always weak and without much flavor, which I guess some people like?
Yesterday, we wanted some water after our food had arrived (shouldn't that be an automatic thing in any restaurant?). At least 5 servers could see that I was craning my neck and they all chose to -- not only ignore me, but -- not even bother to alert our server. When the server finally fulfilled the water request, she arrived with one glass and said, "Oh, did you BOTH want water?" Last time we visited, I got a reuben and it came on a different bread -- the server said, "Yeah, we've been out of rye." -- something she could have bothered to share with me when I placed the order. Like I said, we really want to like this place (it's a "diner" that serves breakfast and it's so close to home), but the food, service and atmosphere are all lackluster. Even with a Living Social deal, I seriously doubt we'll put ourselves through that again.
I am originally from NYC and a good diner in these parts is hard to find. Â After weeks of debating whether or not to try Star Diner, I bit the bullet and went today. Â While it was a Sunday at 11a, we only had to wait 5 minutes for our table. Â The service was a bit slow and not all that friendly (the hostess was annoyed with another service and our waitress never bothered to refill my coffee) - so in other words, LIKE NYC!
The portion was decent and prices fair. Â Most comparable thing I've found to NY for breakfast!
I always find the food, service, and menu selection to be very good, and prices are at least mid-range (could be a little lower in some cases). Â Most of the time I go on the earlier side for lunch or dinner because, quite frankly, I could do without all the little children since it's a very family oriented place (which accounts for the 4 stars, because it would be nice if they had an "adults only" section). Â I actually would be tickled pink if they did delivery. Â I'd use them all the time if they did.
Review Source:I was craving a turkey burger, so I googled "turkey burger" and "Gaithersburg" and Star Diner was one of the first places that came up in my results. Â It did not disappoint. I liked how I could choose my toppings and condiments, instead of just being presented with a list of burgers to choose from. Â The burger was big and juicy (bring wet wipes), and the onions were clearly freshly grilled. Â I will say that if that was "a little bit" of jalapeno, I do not want the full amount, but I suspect the little bit part didn't make it to the cook. Â The service could have been better, especially considering they weren't exactly busy, but it wasn't horrible.
Next time I am craving a turkey burger, I will probably go back.
Went to Star Diner this morning. Â I've been wanting to try this diner for quite some time but I passed on this previously because of the star rating. Â I'm from Philly/NJ area where great diners are everywhere. Â I've lived in the D.C. area for over 5 years and haven't found a diner that is comparable to the ones in the Northeast. Â However, Star Diner is probably one of the best diners in the D.C. area. Â Today, I tried this diner out because I noticed the menu had some healthier options and thought to myself that a diner that offered healthier options probably also cared about the food that they served.
So, I made it to the Star Diner and had a difficult time choosing what to eat since there were so many options--that isn't a bad thing but this is what should happen in a good diner. Â I was weighing my options between a healthier option and an unhealthier yet savory option. Â Â As it turns out, the Star Diner is pretty accommodating, so I went for a healthy savory option. Â I ordered the Lumberjack (which is slightly hilarious since I have a relatively small frame) which consisted of 2 whole wheat pancakes, 2 sausage links, 2 bacon strips, 2 scrambled eggs and the server allowed me to substitute home fries for oatmeal. Â
The food was as close to the Northeast diner "comfort food" as I've gotten since my 5 years in the D.C. area. Â I'll definitely be coming back for more breakfast. Â I just hope it is a 24 hour diner as authentic diners should be. Â Even if it isn't 24 hours, I'll still be coming back for breakfast. Â
I'm not sure why people have rated this diner as low as they have. Â I suspect it is because this is truly a diner and not fancy. Â I find it very hard to find good food in the D.C. area, but finding this diner comparable to Northeast diners says a lot. Â I'll definitely be coming back.
Inconsistent. We have had ok meals here but nothing we ever crave. Always overpriced. Pretty good potato skins; intensely heavy and deep fried and very much worth it. One time we stopped in and asked to pick up a slice of pie. They said they could not get us any even though there were several pies - we haven't been back because that was such an awkward and strange thing to happen.
Review Source:A decent diner overall, nothing glaringly extraordinary, but nothing glaringly horrible either.
Pros: convenience (for the Kent/Lakelands folks), large portions, true retro diner feel
Cons: not the cheapest diner around, just ok service
My CA turkey burger was admittedly large, and while not the best of its kind I've had, certainly not the worst. Generous with the fries though, and everything was hot, Service was competent, but not overly friendly (but at least prompt).
A-Ok.
This place isn't nearly as bad as some people on here have made it out to be. Diner food isn't meant to knock your socks off (although the Studio Diner in San Diego comes pretty close). This place was adequate for a quick dinner while in downtown Gaithersburg. The waiter was definitely high as hell but that was fine with me since most people in this area are way too uptight. I had the Patty Melt on Rye bread with fries. The rye bread was good but the hamburger patty was lacking on flavor. The fries were hot and really hit the spot. Service was good. The radio at the table was broken which was a shame since the lady at the table next to us had a voice so annoying I wanted to throw a brick at her. Prices are a bit high for diner food but not shockingly high like O'Donnell's Sea Catastrophe. Solid 3 but no more than that. You could do a whole lot better than this place but you could also do a whole lot worse.
Review Source:I swore of the diner a long time ago because it's over-priced, inconsistent and the service swings wildy from so-so to terrible. Â My kids like the chocolate chip pancakes and in a week moment I agreed to take them for breakfast.
We got he one waitress that I was hoping not to get. Â I think she's been around since the beginning, has dismissed the pleasantries a long time ago and now just phones everything in.
My order came with the wrong eggs and the waitress said she had 5 orders in her head and screwed up, took the whole plate away instead of just saying I'll bring you some scrambled. Â So, the rest of my food will get cold while scrambling me eggs. Â My toast came with one pad of butter and there is no jelly on the table. Â I asked the food runner for jelly.... when my food came, the waitress brought some jelly. Â In the mean time, as I suspected the rest of my breakfast was cold. Â No drink refills.
I glanced over the check and she charged me for two kids beverages even though one of my sons only had water. Â When I pointed it out, she said "oh, did we do that?". Â I said, "yes, we must have...".
All in $40 for two iced teas, two simple adult breakfasts (french toast with strawberries a scrambled eggs with a dried out ham steak) and two iced teas and one kids drink. Â Me thinks not again.
With all of the great restaurant options in the Kentlands, I can't understand why anyone would want to come here. Â I've been here for breakfast and lunch several times and have consistently been underwhelmed. Â
The food ranges from bad to OK. Â Most breakfast options are fine, if greasy. Â Omlets are large, if not exactly flavorful. Â Waffles are served hot and fluffy, but come off as bland. Â Sausages are plump and spurt grease and bacon tends to be over cooked. Â For lunch, I recently had their matzo ball zoup and while the celery and carrots tasted fresh, the "broth" for the soup consisted of little more than oil. It made me miss the matzo ball soup at the now closed Broadway diner. Â Lots of salad options, but they never seem to taste as good as they are described. Â Service is incredibly slow--you need to send out a search party to find your waitress even when the restaurant is slow. Â
Bottom line--if you're craving the kind of greasy spoon food that only a diner does right, go to the nearest Silver Diner.
I'm not a huge fan of diner food, so take all of this with a grain of salt. I came here for brunch with a few hungry friends yesterday, and we were all underwhelmed.
My boyfriend and I ordered the Star Special ($8.99), which consisted of 3 slices of French toast, bacon, eggs, hash browns, and ham. The French toast came with a huge scoop of not whipped cream, but BUTTER on top. It was disgusting. I scraped it off. The bacon was dry and cracked, and the French toast didn't taste good. The hash browns and eggs were flavorless. I tried a pancake from my friend's plate, and that was pretty good, albeit very, very buttery. One of our friends ordered an omelette ($7.99) with a small cup of orange juice ($2.79). The tiny OJ was definitely not a good bang for your buck.
Our waitress was relatively friendly, but nothing special. The interior was decorated like a typical 50's diner-joint, with cute little jukeboxes on each table.
Next time you're wanting breakfast, head to a different diner or breakfast location. It wasn't awful, but it certainly was not good. Star Diner is not worth coming to.
It's been a few years since I've visited the Star Diner. Â I remember it being OK and a little overpriced in comparison to similar fare elsewhere. Â That hasn't changed. Â Although the ambiance and wait staff are great, it's overpriced for breakfast compared to a place like First Watch in Rockville. Â The breakfast food we had was marginal. Â I got the Lumber Jack special ($9). Â My son got the child's chocolate chip pancake with fruit ($4). My wife didn't want a full item, so she got a single banana/chocolate chip pancake ($5.29). Â With milk, coffee, tax, tip, the three of us ate for $28. Â We usually eat a similar and better breakfast for just under $20 at places like First Watch, IHOP, Corner Bakery, etc. Â I doubt I will return based on value for price.
Review Source:This place should be called "Half Star Diner" 'cause "Star" is much more than it deserves.
If you're thinking about breakfast or brunch at this joint, think again. Whatever you do, avoid the Sweet Potato Pancakes which have the consistency of wet cement and lack any distinct flavor whatsoever. Sausage links felt like they'd been under heat lamps for hours prior to our arrival. Coffee was passable at best (yeah, I know...it IS a diner, after all).
My meal was, in a word, inedible.
Don't even get me started about the WACK service.
3 Stars is right on...I will say their Sedona Chicken Salad is ridiculous!...everything else consistently average to good.
I have eaten here many times, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Â They have a pretty great selection of different types of foods, but I usually stick to sandwiches, burgers or breakfast.
I find it a little expensive for a diner, but I'm paying for convenience. Â I wouldn't make a special trip, but if you are close by it's a decent restaurant.
It's great that I have a diner near my house. It's one of those that serves everything especially when you are craving for something homey. The service is usually good. Â In the summer they open up the tiki bar that lured quite a good crowd and there was a band in the center of the square that the bartender kept emphasizing they are paying for the band. The band sucks though with the loud music drowning the small voice of the lead singer. The bar was a fun place to hang out and watch the crowd in the square.
Review Source:Sandwiches are good. Â The rest of the food is mediocre IMO. Â The price is ok. Â I wouldn't pick this place for breakfast unless I lived in walking distance of it. Â Service here depends on the server. Â I've been there years back where we had a young server several times and they were all mediocre at best. Â The last time I went our server was an older lady and she was very good. Â One good thing to note is the patio area. Â It's great to sit on the patio on a beautiful spring or summer day, have lunch or dinner and drink a beer or two. Â They also put a bar outside for the summer, and make it a good place to mingle and hangout for the younger people in the area. I go here 1-2 times a year...it's not on my list of places to go, but if I'm in the kentlands and really craving a sandwich, or if I have a night off in the summer time and happen to go to the kentlands I would stop by for a drink or two at this place.
Review Source:intriguing that this got so panned, and I admit that my friend who took me there refers to it as the 'crap diner', as opposed to the "good diner" [where i haven't been yet, but I will happily Yelp when I go.] Â and it may have been that I was REALLY hungry, but man, those sweet potato fries were delicious. Â
can't really fairly judge the rest, as we did take out and any fries will get cold and kinda gross.
When my 7 year old nephew doesn't touch what's on his plate, it's usually a sign that the food is horrible. While he does not have the most discerning palate, kids generally like easy, no frills, conventional American fare - like diner food (grilled cheese, burgers, chicken fingers, and tuna fish sandwiches).
He was done after 2 bites.
His meal was served with smiley fries which are fries in the shape of smiley faces. I tried one and it tasted like greasy yet cold potato mush. The wrap I ordered was subpar, and my potatoes were cold, dry, and flavorless. I love diners and the whole diner atmosphere, but unfortunately this place seemed to be just an enormous waste of space.
I worked at the Star Diner about 9 years ago, and it hasn't changed a bit! Still ridiculously expensive, still owned by an ogre of a man, still full of stressed waitstaff. The Star Diner's like any other non-diner "diner." You go there for a "diner" experience and get a carefully crafted, overpriced kitschy restaurant menu and go home feeling ripped off. Skip this one - especially with the other great stuff in the neighborhood, like Five Guys and Zodiac.
