I love the Starlight. It is hands down my favorite venue in KC. If you get a chance to see a band that takes your breath away it is somewhat magical to be under the stars and hear your favorite song being belted out. I've seen two concerts at the Starlight. One was a few years back in the fall for Tori Amos. The most recent was a couple weeks ago for Sigur Ros. The fall show had better weather, but both shows had excellent sound and will forever remain engraved in my head as top nights ever.
The staff at the Starlight are always so helpful and friendly. The concessions are expensive, but what venue doesn't have expensive concessions? Plan ahead, or don't buy them. Ticket prices vary. The tickets for Tori Amos a few years back were cheap, but my Sigur Ros tickets were a little pricey. Worth it, but pricey. You will probably have to pay for parking if you are going for an event so bring some cash before you even pull into the parking lot.
One thing I really love about the Starlight is that even when I have seats further back you still feel like you have decent seating. For more intimate shows they don't usually sell out the back portion of the venue making it feel more close and homey.
My only tip would be to bring a blanket if the weather is any bit questionable. I froze my toosh off at the Sigur Ros show. I brought a jacket, but really wished I a) didn't have an end seat (so I could soak up others body heat) and b) had brought my snuggie.
This has got to be my favorite venue in town. Â Most recently, we were there to see Jason Mraz with Christina Perri, and one of them commented that it felt like they were playing in a castle. I just love the ambiance there! Â
I've always lucked out and been there during great weather. Comfy seats, average/rapey beverage prices, but the staff is always friendly so it makes me less angry than, say, at a Royals game. Â
I'm always thrilled when one of my favorite artists is coming to town and lands here. If I ever make it big, Starlight, I'll remember you!
As I drove from St Louis to Kansas City on June 28th, in the midst of record breaking heat, I questioned both my sanity and the wisdom of attending an outside concert. Â Hadn't been to the Starlight before, but was immediately struck by its new appearance and friendly staff. Â Also helped when showtime temp was "only" 99 degrees. Â There was a nice breeze, however, and it never felt as hot as it was. Â I was shocked when a staffer told me it was built in the 40's, I would have guessed it no more than 10 or so years old. Â Clearly it has been well taken care of. Â Sight lines were great, sound was as well. Â As we went to leave (shortly before show ended), a staffer offered us a ride to our car several hundred yards away. Â She didn't have to do that, was just genuinely nice, like everyone else we encountered there! Â I'm going back again this Sat for Hall and Oates, sure it will be cooler this time, and that I will have another great experience.
Review Source:We went for My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses. Â
Great service, everyone that worked there was especially friendly. Very clean, and super pretty place to see a show. Â They have bathroom attendants! The landscaping is gorgeous. Â I would recommend going for any show that you are interested in. Â I hadn't been since the 90's, and it has improved since then for sure!
This is my third year with season tickets for the musicals and I absolutely love Starlight. The productions are always top notch. Even if the musical isn't your preference, you can not walk away saying it was a bad show.
The staff is outstanding. I may be wrong, but I believe most of them are volunteers and I have never had a negative experience, not even a slightly bad experience with anyone who works there. Smiles, friendly, courteous, always willing to help, just outstanding from the parking lot attendants, ticket takers, the concessions, the ushers, everyone is fantastic!
I buy parking for the season so have never had any parking issues. Also, leaving the venue is always easy and well directed after the shows.
I have only been here one time, and that was for the Cure a few years back, but I have to say this is hands down the best outdoor venue in the KC area. Â I think if more bands knew about it, they would insist on playing here. Â Parking is fantastic, the sounds is incredible, the staff very friendly, and the venue itself is absolutely beautiful. Â I keep waiting for another show to come here that I want to see, because it's simply the most beautiful place to see a live show around.
Review Source:I constantly forget how much I love this concert venue; I have been to many shows here and each and every time I absolutely love each one. Granted the performers put on a great show as well. But back to the venue, everything is stream lined, the ticketing process is simple and easy, the parking is easy, the staff is incredibly nice and helpful, concessions is so quick as well. Also not to forget that it is outside is also a plus! The great talent that starlight brings in really proves that it is a venue worth going to, also they stage is massive so there is a lot of interaction with the crowd as well!
Review Source:Every summer, Starlight brings in some of the best bands from around the country, as well as some of the best touring musicals (and a few local productions as well).
The venue was renovated in the mid-00's, and it simply sparkles. Â There are plenty of seats, the acoustics are pretty good, and the stage is ginormous. Â Plus, there are plenty of vendors and opportunities for food and drink around.
The only bad things? It's outdoors -- and most events are rain / shine / super-hot sunshine. Â Come dressed for the weather. Â (It's totally worth it in the summertime, and most events do start just at sunset, so that it gets a little cooler as the night goes on.)
Expect to park in the grass, especially for big events. Â That's just how it is; there's not much of a lot.
And... smaller productions tend to get "swallowed up" by the stage. Â Take Mamma Mia!, for example -- the show has a very minimal set that looked ridiculously small for the ginormous stage it was set on. Â It almost seems like actors have to do a full 100-yard dash to get to the other side of the stage at times.
There are, indeed, the low things... but, come on, even the "lows" aren't all that bad. Â The show or concert may not be that great, but you can't blame it on the venue.
I've seen both Les Mis and Chris Rock at this venue and the concession service and simple beauty and elegance of the venue added to the experience.
Outdoor amphitheaters all over the world are very similar. Â They are built in such a way to take advantage of natural acoustics. Â They are usually in a location that is a bit off the beaten path. Â They also usually attract some great acts.
The Starlight is all of that, and a bag of chips. Â That you can order with beer, at concession.
Been here several times, most recently for the 4.20.11 The National/Arcade Fire show.
It was a risky choice for mid-late April being an amphitheater, though the headliner (AF) was phenomenal.
Not so much for the opener (National). Â Though I'm a casual fan, Â their sound and style is much better suited for a smaller, in-door venue. Â I think they knew it too.
But hey, if you want to watch a slightly-better-than-your-local-high-school-Âmusical to the distant braying of incarcerated animals at the nearby zoo....be Starlight's guest.
I've had season tickets for the Broadway shows before, and I must say, they were definitely worth my money. Well, actually it wasn't MY money as the tickets were a gift...in any case, they were worth it.
Starlight Theatre is a good outdoor venue (I'd imagine it's fantastic for concerts, but I've never been to one here before), and as with any outdoor event, you just have to prepare for the weather. Â I've sat through sweltering, humid heat to 20 minutes of rain delaying the performance, but the staff and performers have always been nothing short of professional and positive. Â True, it's kind of hard to see details on stage if you're anywhere behind the first section, but overall I still enjoyed myself immensely.
Great outdoor venue. Â If the weather cooperates, this theater can make for a very memorable night. Â Nothing like looking up at the moon and clouds while watching a great concert. Â The sound is well tuned and there is beer and margaritas aplenty. Â I caught the Tori Amos show here and was expecting to see just a stage and piano, but the lighting added another dimension. Â All though the stage is completely covered, the seating is not, so dress accordingly.
Review Source:I was really impressed with the theatre when I saw a couple of their musicals this summer. I am even thinking about getting season tickets to the next Broadway season, which holds Chicago, Mamma Mia, and Legally Blonde: The musical, just to name a few. One thing I really love about Starlight is the fact that they have such affordable tickets. For example, Terrace season tickets (to all 5 of their Broadway shows) is about $70. You can also get side terrace tickets for about $15. Obviously, these aren't the best tickets in the venue, but if you bring your binoculars, this is definitely a great way to spend an evening.
Of course, this is an outdoor venue, as someone else mentioned, but I'd certainly take the chance of rain over some other indoor venue any day. I grew up going to the outdoor concert series in my hometown park, and spending an evening outside being entertained has always been a fun experience for me. Besides their Broadway series, they also have concerts, which have included some pretty large names that I wish I could have gone to but couldn't afford at the time- Steve Miller Band, Maroon 5, and many others.
This is my favorite concert venue in Kansas City. Â It's cleverly named due to the fact that it's an open-air ampitheater and you're very much looking at the stars. Â For being outdoors, it's actually quite fancy. Â The seating and lighting are quite nice, and the stage is huge. Â This is only good for summer shows, obviously. Â I went to a show in the fall once and nearly froze my ass off. Â Another downfall--it's right next to the Kansas City Zoo, so during those really hot summer nights, there is most definitely a faint scent of poo on the air.
Review Source:This place recently went through a remodel to build up their event rental facilities. Â
I love being able to see a concert under the stars. Â I have seen Blue Man, Melissa Etheridge and Mary J Blige here. Â The seating is laid out nicely.
The downside, is that you are taking your chances with the rain. Â But when the weather is great- it is a true experience.
