Mix one part boring, three parts stupid, two parts lame and you have a hot mess of a place called Steiners. Stumbled into the bar a few times, thinking each time would be a better than the last. No luck, it continues to prove itself a mindless sports bar without a soul.

What you can expect at Steiners: An odd mix of people, most about 40 to 50 years old, with a splash of tourists and younger folks with 49er shirts high fiving each other at every tackle. The bartenders have zero personality and service mediocre. Conversations here are typically shallow and neither friendly or unfriendly. Environment is a modern sports theme pretending to be established. On live band nights, be prepared to talk with no one unless your prone to yelling. Music is really loud and annoying. There are much better bars in Sonoma.

My wife stopped in here on our honeymoon because we wanted to watch some NFL football at a local place.  We looked at online reviews and decided that Steiner's Tavern would be the place to go because they have multiple TV's and a sports theme.
Turns out they indeed have many TV's and there were about 6 games showing at once when we walked in there.  It was a pretty good place to catch some football on a Sunday afternoon.
Other reviewers were right about the locals.  There were about 15 of them lined up at the bar.  We saw lots of slaps on the back, making fun of each other, taking shots, and gawking at any female that happened to walk by (including my wife).  One of them actually offered to buy her a drink!
Overall, it's a pretty nice place.  Somewhere between a dive bar and a sports bar.  It was very clean, although the men's room was out of soap which kind of scared me.  We ordered the sampler platter and their famous chowder.  It was pretty good bar food, but far from healthy.  But hey, we were on vacation.
Steiner's was a good place for hanging out to watch the game and have a few beers.  I found it interesting that there were no tables there (there might have been one).  You either bellied up to the bar or sat at an area with a bar extending between two pillars (that's where we were). There is no table service, so you need to go up to the bar to get a drink, and subject yourself to the drunken ramblings of the locals.  Watch out if you're female, they get real friendly later in the day.  If you want food, you go back to the kitchen window and tell them what you want.  Good service, nice people.
Note that this bar is cash only.

    Fun bar on the square.

Decent selection of draft beers, seems to be mostly a local crowd, the food is pretty good & the service so so.

    Cash only.

My wife and I stopped in Steiners on wed the 18th for some cold drinks and some food.  We walked in and sat down at a table right next to the bar.  The bar tender walked right past us went behind the bar and proceeded to eat chips.  Never once did anyone say hello or anything to us.

The bartender just came across like a real @#%  almost like he had been drinking with the bar for the last eight hours and could barely keep his eyes open let alone be nice or curtious to patrons when they come into there establishment.

As an out of town guest this is not the way that I would run my bar and as a business owner I do know that customer service is key especially in todays times.

You wanna know the Cheers of Sonoma? Where everybody knows your name... and they are really glad you came to listen to live music, play some pool or buy a stiff drink (CASH only, though.)

On the recommendation of a few locals whom we met there on a couple occasions during our trip, we felt like the only non-locals there (not a bad thing.)

Everyone was friendly while they sipped on their gin n tonics and cold brews, and eve though the acoustics weren't perfect, the band didn't seem to have a problem getting the crowd dancing and singing along to their cover songs.

I would venture to say this is the hippest dive bar in town and that's why so many locals love it.

Good news is they'll welcome you just the same if you are a "tourist" in love with Sonoma like me.

The best tip I could give is TRY THE CHOWDER!!! One of the best things that hit my tongue (besides the wine!) all weekend.

Club S is bumpin' seven nights a week!

When you're in wine country you expect a lot of schmoozin' and wine drinking with your pinkie in the air. But when your little pinkie gets tired, throw on some flip flops and comfy clothes and head to the square and grab a beer at Club S. This is the spot where we made most of our friends, and this is the spot where I was able to nab some craft beer when my tastebuds couldn't handle anymore wine.

The drinks are affordable, you can play pool or darts and there was a different band every night that rocked the house. It was packed with locals so we chatted up as many people as we could and got some great recommendations for places to hit up each day. We were in Sonoma for 4 days and each of them ended at Steiner's and a blast was had by all.

This town is amazing and it's the people that make it so. So if you want to travel like a local, find this crazy little dive bar and make some new friends like we did. Club S por vida!

Steiners was our default when we were in Sonoma. Also known as Club S on Saturdays, it's a bumpin bar with decently priced drinks, good live music on a regular basis and lots of friendly locals, even though it's on the square.

There are pool tables, TVs, darts, a dance floor and a kitchen that is pumpin out some good smells. Though there are the staples, like fried pickles, they also have some fun items like sweet potato tater tots and a great bowl of clam chowder.

Definitely make this a stop on your first night and you'll end up with lots of local friends and maybe a hangover.

As long as you don't get belligerent and stupid and follow the rules, the bartenders and bouncers are a blast! The atmosphere is great!  The DJ is great, and I have never had anyone who works here treat me bad!  The bouncer is pretty hot too! :)

This is a great bar to hang out at. Its extremely clean and you can tell that the people that work their really have a lot of respect for the bar and the customers that flow through the doors.
They have a little kitchen that serves up some snack food, tv's, pool tables, and dice games. The bar tenders are very nice and dont mind having a conversation with you or throwing in their two sense. They also have music going all the time which is great too.
The location is great, right on the plaza so if you have been to Sonoma and havent gone in yet give it a shot you will be pleasantly surprised.

Steiner's is like a old school sports bar - I won't really call it a dive because it's very clean inside. In fact, I loved how put together the place was - lots of seating, corner kitchen area for sweet potato tots etc, 2 pool tables and bathrooms in the back.
The ladies room was clean and has 2 stalls. + 1 star.

Lots of TVs, dice, long bar - good drinks too! I know they have DJs and music some nights So I would definitely check that out.

Great location on the Plaza! I'll be back Steiners!!!

Ever drive through an area of new development and see a run-down lean-to that someone refused to sell-out to developers?  Steiner's is the Sonoma equivalent.  They're probably doing just fine, but they're not the reason Sonoma tourism is flourishing, and I suspect that they couldn't care less.

*Taxidermy mammals on the wall (moose, deer) and above the door (bobcat)
*Jello shots and jello double shots
    * Fried dill pickles (WTH??!!)
    * Two pool tables
    * Lots of locals who look like they spend a lot of time here
    * Some incentive for wearing Giants orange on game days
    * Photo finish line and winner's circle photos of thoroughbred races that  remind me of the hallway of my childhood home

Steiner's is a dive bar in an upscale locale.  Sometimes that's just what you're looking for, regardless of where you may be.

One Word. LOCALS. I've been here several times and it seems like all the LOCALS hang out here. This is not a bad thing, but I guess I'm tired of seeing the same old people around. I have friends that live in Sonoma and this is the usual spot to hang out. It's an okay spot, nothing fancy. Usually on Thurs,Fri, & Sat there is a good crowd. Drinks are pretty cheap.

Intellectually stunted clientele graces the old hardwood floors. The bartenders are actually very good professionals. I say that with conviction. They will get you loaded but if you give the establishment any problems yer out.

I have never once came in here and  had a stimulating conversation with anybody. I can pretend to give a damn about sports and talk but that is the depth you get.

Yes sometimes women come in with skimpy dress and big fake all American breasts dangle out. Wow! I'm not taking her home. I couldn't afford to buy her a drink because I spent my last amount of money on a beer for myself and left.

If you come to this bar and expect to get laid you won't. The only way to pick up on women in this bar is to behave like an arrogant, uninformed moron of the masses.

It's an ugly whore sell out kinda bar. Good old boy rednecks and young morons with a thirst for retardation are the bulk of the place.

Perhaps the most redeeming aspect of this bar is that they are open at 6:30AM on Christmas day.

I always drink a beer and a whiskey for Jezus.

Oh sure it can get really noisy, be filled with frat boys and cougars on the prowl, and locals who can't grow up and don't seem to want to grow old... but man it's fun.  You just have to know when to go.  If you just want to hang out, sip your drink, and have a nice conversation... don't go on Friday's after 10:00!

They remembered my drink before they knew my name and as long as you are not mean, dumb, fake, or loud (on the money Jason) the service is spot on.  And the St. Pat's Day spread is g-r-e-a-t.  Oh and Katie W,  this place never pretended or tried to be upscale anything.  It has been and always was...a great local watering hole.

While Steiner's has some good live music, the pictures don't really depict the Steiner's I saw. When we went, it was more of an atmosphere of small groups of 3-4 per table chatting over a couple of beers. Which is A-OK in my book. Maybe, I'll try some of their food next time.

One thing no-one has yet mentioned about this bar....

It opens up at six feckin a. feckin m. That's the time of day a bar should open up at. That's the time of day a man should start drinkin at. Or finish depending on how good the night before was.

I don't think I have been in a bar at 6 am since college. It is just one of those things. If a bar is open at six am and no-one is there, is it really open? Well, I had to find out so I went in and it was.

Sadly we missed the opportunity to come back in the evening and drink with the local 50-and-over Harley Davidson biker's club. We were the out-of-town tourists just in for a few days - it was great to see that a place exists in Sonoma where lychee freakin martinis aren't on the menu and beer is served in a foamy frosted mug and you can buy a cup of coffeee for a dollar.

It is also worth pointing out that  the conversations you overhear at other tables aren't about "cloud computing"  "the service portfolio matrix" " the value proposition " or other crap like that that a normal person comes to Sonoma to get away from.

    Throw back pleasure.

I first learned about Steiners back in the old days when it was in a much older and smaller building, in the back they had picnic tables to sit outside and take in a breath of fresh wine country air. When Steiners closed down and word was out that they were opening again, bigger and better, I was hesitant, that was Dec 00!

I spent 6 solid years  -( well not solid but you get the pic) at the new Steiners and I have and hold some extremely precious memories there!  I made an incredible circle of friends, that too this day I still stay close to.

I agree with Cat, Steiners is actually where I met many great people and made many friends! There might even be a fun collage on the walls in Steiners to check out!

Then of course there is the diverse crowd that you can find on the weekends!  I tell you, if people watching is your thing, you see all kinds - just like that song by Toby Keith, I love this bar!!!  It is true I do, it is and will always be close to my heart.

If you like to play pool, they have 2 pool tables in the back, but play fair, no quarters on the table here, put your name on the chalkboard and have a drink (did I mention how good they are?) while you are waiting your turn!

    I
Of course Steiner's is not only known for the weekend night drunk fest, but Steiner's is also the venue for Film Festivals and other really great events in Sonoma!  The weekdays are fun to walk in a any given after noon to say hello to some very friendly old folks (geezers) and here some really cool stories!

And as far as the drinks!  I agree you will not find another fun local bar that has more friendly bartenders and that REALLY know how to make a drink!  You can even challenge them, I betcha they will know how to make it!!

Any Nascar fans coming to town...Steiners is the only happening spot for after the race fun!

I seriously could go on and on about this really great bar...bottom line - Steiner's IS the locals favorite and we welcome all the tourists to come and check out this really cool bar in a very quaint and fabulous town!

When the bar closes, you can walk the square and if you are lucky get a hot loaf of bread to help soak up all those very generously poured drinks!!!

Even though I am far away now, the memories live on - OH MAN DO THEY!!  ; )

I've been going to this bar for approx 8 -10 years. I've gone as a single woman and in a relationship and always had a great time. The staff is great and so are the patrons. I really didn't know anyone in Sonoma until I started going to Steiner's - now I have some great friends.
I've participated in the 4th of July Parade for Steiner's 3 times and the owner has always taken care of us... Check out some of the pictures.. We really know how to have a good time. Check out the Steiner's MySpace page - It has current events and upcoming shows.. Steiner's never has a cover charge, so check it out...

As someone who has gone to Steiners ever since the days of it truly being a dive bar (different building, different feel), I believe that I am qualified to give a truthful review of Steiners Tavern as it stands today.

First of all, if you are new to town, this is the place to begin forming bonds. If there ever was a "Cheers" in Sonoma, this would be it. I've even run into the actor who played Cliff the mailman here, lol! But Steiners is the place where if you come in for any length of time, the bartenders know you and welcome you. Locals always have the right of way.

But as a tourist, this is still a very happening spot. Every weekend the crowd changes. You can't base your opinions on a singular night as the weekends are a mixture of locals, ex-locals here for a visit, and tourists with tourists becoming the majority. It makes for an eclectic mix of people creating a completely different atmosphere each and every weekend.

And weeknights are the best. Since Sonoma is a service industry town, this is where everyone goes to blow off steam. Everyone ends up at Steiners. Don't get me wrong, each and every place on the plaza is welcoming and a fun place to gather, but by the end of the night, you can bet you'll find whoever you're looking for at Steiners.

Now, I read the review from Valerie, and as a local, I'm appalled by the way she was treated. But truth be told, more than likely the people she came into contact with were tourists, and unfortunately, they are all from different walks of life. But nowhere else that I have ever been are people from every walk of life so welcome. Where else will you see a man in a cowboy hat taken a shot with the Jack to my Karen? Or the boy with black nail polish playing pool with the ex-cheerleader? That's the kind of place this is.

By the way, there are two pool tables in the back with very fair rules on getting into play. Also, they very often have live music and karaoke as well as a kick ass jukebox that is hooked up to the Internet so it plays the most random and amazing music. Also, where else will you find jello shots?? Not too mention, like many other establishments in the community, Steiners in particular is very big on giving back. They are always involved in charitable events.

Don't take my word for it... check it out for yourself.

Ok, yes I do know someone who knows someone whose sleeping with someone who owns this place. But my opinion remains untainted as I love me a great dive bar. Steiner's is just that place, it's got pool tables and karaoke nights and cute old men who eat breakfast here and animal heads on the wall.

I grew up in a small town and Steiner's always makes me feel at home. On Friday and Saturday nights the place fills up with a huge mix of people, young and old, rich and poor.

In one night you can be chatting with someone who reminds me of your dad about when duck season opens one minute, some snooty winery owner about how their grapes are doing the next, and then have some 21 year old hottie in Wranglers hit on you the next.

Basically I like this place. So to close I'll leave with a song that reminds me of Steiners every time I hear it...

"I Love This Bar" by Toby Keith

We got winners, we got losers
    Chain smokers and boozers
And we got yuppies, we got bikers
    We got thristy hitchhikers
And the girls next door dress up like movie stars

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

We got cowboys, we got truckers
    Broken-hearted fools and suckers
And we got hustlers, we got fighters
    Early birds and all-nighters
And the veterans talk about their battle scars

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

    [Chorus:]
    I love this bar
    It's my kind of place
Just walkin' through the front door
Puts a big smile on my face
It ain't too far, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

I've seen short skirts, we got high-techs
    Blue-collar boys and rednecks
And we got lovers, lots of lookers
And I've even seen dancing girls and hookers
And we like to drink our beer from a mason jar

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
    Yes I do

I like my truck (I like my truck)
I like my girlfriend (I like my girlfriend)
I like to take her out to dinner
I like a movie now and then

    But I love this bar
    It's my kind of place
Just trollin' around the dance floor
Puts a big smile on my face
No cover charge, come as you are
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

We got divorcees and a big bouncer man
An old jukebox and a real bad band
We got waitresses and we got barflies
    A dumb-ass and a wise-guy
If you get too drunk just sleep out in your car

    Reason number 672 why

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar
    Play it on out boys
    Beer-thirty's over
Got to take it on home

Hmm, hmm, hmm I love this bar

I so wish I could give zero stars!

As my partner and I walked past and thought about stopping for a drink, we were greeted by a group of maybe 8 people outside, completely drunk and having cigs yelling homophobic slurs at my partner.

If this is what the locals are like and where they hang out in Sonoma, well then, I don't need to spend my dollar here.  You have left a lasting impression on me and why I pretty much don't need to come back to visit your little town.

This is the local hangout place, there is no doubt about that. Afternoons and early evenings are a good time to stop by before dinner for a drink. After dinner, there are other places in the area that are nicer and more friendly to the visiting crowds. Local sports are always on their TV's though, so if you want to sit and talk with the locals about their teams, it is a great place to be.

Straightforward. Extreme hit or miss crowd. Not bad with a little polish, but I'd still head to the opposite side of the square to one of the other bars if you need a cooler atmostphere. Music nights are best - otherwise the crowd can be a bit gruff.

Bipolar is the best way to describe this bar.  If you stroll in during the early evening hours, you can grab one of the two pool tables in back while drinking a pint of something on tap and catching a hockey game (or whatever sport that you prefer but is lame because it's not hockey).  Brian, one of the staple Steiner's bartenders, is one of my favorite people on earth.  Seriously.  However, if you come in around midnight on a Friday or Saturday night, it kind of reminds me of my experiences in frat houses during my freshman year at UCLA.  If you're looking for Sonoma' s version of a meat-market, this is the time & place for you.  Proceed with caution.
