Great local place!  The owners/bar tenders where super nice! Live music is a plus! Josiah Night and Smooth Hound Smith where a perfect match musically. Josiah started the night off with a mellow folk set, great voice and stellar beard! Than SMOOTH HOUND SMITH!!! WOW!!! Guy/girl duo with foot drums and lots of percussion. I will def  be back here if they keep having these guys!

After reading all the reviews on here, I was very underwhelmed. Honestly, if it hadn't been for a decent live band, we would have left after our first beer. It's in a remodel four room house, all of the rooms are very small. There's the bar in the first room, a table or two in the next room, a pool table in the next, and a pin ball machine in the back room. Its very cramped and dimly lit. I'd also just like to say the place isnt cute or quaint in any sense and has no ambiance. Its run down.

The bar is limited, no wine and a rather small selection of beer. I'd say about half of the bar was sloppy drunk. One man even harassed me at the bar for my choice of beer (may I note that he was drinking PBR, like 99% of the bar).

I found absolutely nothing redeeming about this bar besides the band being an interesting listen. I wont be back.

Strega should be on the menu for any "Fear and Loathing in Reno, Nevada"-esque bender. Right after the casino bars and a little before that shady alley with the guy selling paint thinner.

I jest, this bar is pretty weird (read: hip?) but it's also pretty awesome. We were directed here by a couple of locals, glad we listened. The bar is literally just an old house in a normal-looking neighborhood. Make sure to double-check the address before barging through the door.

"Welcome to Earth, newcomers" the bartender greeted us as we walked in. I'm not sure what that was about, but it did a great job of setting the atmosphere.

The inside definitely feels like you're inside a house (because again, the bar is inside a house). There's a pool table in one of the rooms and some (seedy) seating spread around the place. I liked the art they had up, and apparently it rotates.

They've got a few varieties of Deschutes on tap and they were only playing old Modest Mouse the whole night- very cool.

The ambiance might seem a little contrived, but it's still really relaxed. Everyone we met here was super friendly and happy to fill us in on Reno life off the strip.

I'll come back next time I'm around.

When I was still in college, this was the place to be. Back in the day, it was a great little out of the way kind of bar to have a nice drink. You could play pool, play apples to apples, all within the comfort of the old house. The bartenders were great and if I were still in Reno, this is where I would be.

Of the few last visits, I started noticing that more and more of the younger kids coming around, which is fine, it's the way of the world. I get older, they get younger.

Either way, I would call it one of the bars that you would have to visit if you visit Reno, live in Reno, or anywhere near Reno. Pay this place a visit.

I like strega, it's probably my favorite bar in Reno. Which is why this is a shame. Been waiting 10 minutes for service. It's not even busy. 4 people have been served before us even though we were here first. One did not pay for her drink which makes me think that the apparently drunk blonde barmaid knows her personally. One of the barmaids finished serving someone, she must have known we were waiting, but then went to write a chalk board apparently. Which left the long haired barman who actually looked at us several times. It was like they were doing it on purpose. It was really weird. Now the bartenders are loudly discussing different words for women's breasts. Unfortunate that their service on this occasion is so utterly poor.

Strega is great. You walk in and you feel like you're at a house party with a slightly expensive drink list.

The other night myself, the hubs, and two of our friends came here to top off a night at the driving range. If I'm going to get my mind off this blister, it's going to be with loud music and multiple 7&7's. We arrive - parking is great. We get a spot right out front. They're playing 80's music and everyone is dressed in the time period, so either we entered a theme party or Indiana (turns out it was the former - WHEW).

You don't come to this bar if you don't plan on a) getting wasted and b) listening to loud music. I mean, seriously, you don't come here and complain about the noise. It's called "go to a quieter bar you crazy old coot!" You come here to dance, to drink, to getcha groove on and play pool. You can sit outside and smoke or just enjoy the unusually warm October nights we've been having lately.

It can get a little crowded, but so can most bars. Was the Seagrams the bartender used in our 7&7's watered down? I usually get drunk off half an Icky, why was I sober after three of these? Maybe I'm just not recalling correctly how many times the husband and two friends took my drink after they had chugged theirs down, because hubs began hiccuping advice by the end of the night (always a good sign of sobriety...).

Either way, it was fun. I definitely plan on coming back, maybe this time ask for something a little bit stronger and see if they can play some Foster the People/hip-hop sounds. What? I like to get down.

Fun concept.  Take your house and turn it into an artsy, low light speakeasy style bar.  There really is a bar for everyone here in Reno.

This bar used to be a large house on Arlington right at the corner with Califronia.  Now, it's a bar with art sales and hipsters like you see at Lincoln Lounge (so I'm told).  That means, yes, they have Pabst!

I went here later last Friday because I knew a musician going there to jam.  And a fun jam session it was.  Upon walking in you had no choice but to part the small sea of bandmembers to get to the bar.  It felt sort of rude, but there was literally NO OTHER WAY to get to the bar.  You work with these things.  Sometimes you get to be the cattle.

The bar has a nice counter slapped down in the middle of a dining area right in front of the kitchen and nearby area that is the back area of the bar.  There's a really cool sign made of wood for Deschutes Brewing Company on the left (they have Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter on draft), some shirts for sale (that come with a free Pabst and are $16) that say "Reno Fucking Nevada" along with the Strega logo (that looks a bit like a Jaegermeister logo in black and red.  There's a full bar behind the counter, Guiness in the fridge (out that night), Pabst in cans AND on tap (they've got Pabst!) and some Skyy vodka vessels that have real fruit in them.  I got 2 Black Butte Porters and they were 4 bucks each, a pretty standard price.

If you walk in, up the stairs and to the right you enter another room with a pool table and some photographs for sale on the walls (semi-artsy themes, sometimes clothed ladies as well as a number of macro shots of flowers, bees and other objects/organisms).  Heading down the hall you go by the men's room and then go to the back room with a few video games, one that's broken (a multi-classic arcade game), a hunting game (with rifle controllers) and an old school pinball machine (Saturday Night Fever? can't remember).

There is upstairs and downstairs outdoor seating in front in the form of 6 or so picnic tables.

The bartender was pretty cool, not hassling me too much, but helpful when he could tell I wanted a drink.

Good scene and nice to see a place supporting the arts, serving nice beer, having a lot of outdoor seating and being a creative use of space.

The edgy logo kind of sits in your subconscious as it's menacing, but also stylish.  I like.

Far enough away from downtown to be away from the main fray of Reno.

Even though hipster artsy type people aren't my cup of tea, I'd still come here because the rest of it was pretty cool.

Well, I am glad Ernie C. was wrong and here, three years later, Strega is still poppin'.

The energy is usually decent in here, depending on what night you go. I've always had a good time at Strega, whether it's during the Santa Pub Crawl or a low-key Thursday night. Bartenders and such can be a little slow to get to you, but the ambiance more than makes up for it. Drinks are priced decently, but this isn't a cheap bar.

I really like that they rotate out the art on the walls frequently. Strega is actually one part house party, one part bar and one part art gallery. Solid.

reno actually has fun cool bars
    I never wouldve guessed
    seriously
I headed out to St. James Infirmary and happened upon Strega by mistake (thanks Sprint Navigation)
this turned out to be my favourite bar in Reno (i would probably spend way to much time here if I lived here)
i like any bar that has an equal combination of ex cons, musicians, transplants from everywhere (no one is born in reno right?) random dogs, and hot guys (there were hot girls there too :)
Both nights the bartenders were great (girl on Saturday guy on Sunday) met the owner (who is moving to portland so hopefully this bar will keep its charm once it changes hands
Everyone talks to you - this is NOT that standard at bars - I woke up hungover today and thought - I didnt drink that much - then I remembered the irish coffee and the shots (thanks Strega)
I would actually go back to Reno to go out !!

For 2 years now, Strega has dwelled inside its quaint early 1900's converted house offering a folksy hang-out to Reno's bar goers.  Owner Jeremy Morrow supports local musicians and artists by featuring events such as the annual Nada Dada Motel artist galleries, rotating local art on the walls and hosting open mic nights.
Strega's Summer Drink Menu features refreshing cocktails like the Ginger Mojito, a Tuaca Sidecar and the Black Drop made with homemade blackberry puree. Bartender Stephanie Slongo whipped me up her favorite off the menu: Sandia Fresca. Brimming with fresh watermelon puree, this bright pink drink tastes crisp and clean with a bold melon flavor & aroma. It's like summer in your mouth!

    Sandia Fresca $8
    1  1/2 oz Watermelon Vodka
    1 oz Watermelon puree
    Honeydew Ball garnish

Tonight, I've met a group of roller-derby girls, a particle accelerator engineer, a hot dental assistant, and some great bartenders. This seems to be the place to come to hang out and meet some great people.

I have seen this bar get CRAZY! Some of my most fun nights have happened here. I love that this bar is an old house. The front (living room/kitchen) is the bar and dance floor area, the next room is more chill quiet room for people who want to hear themselves talk, and the next room is pool table area then hallway bathrooms and finally game/ arcade. A little bit of something for everyone. It also has an amazing deck to sit and chat in the warmer months. All staff members are sweet and easy on the eyes. Great place! Great music!

Kick ass bar usually. Free pool! I repeat, Free pool! When it's quiet the drinks seem to get a bit stiffer. Pretty neat that it's in an old house that once served as a realty office. I could deal without the people smoking inside but I am also in favor of the Feds leaving me be, so whatcha gunna do.

Strange house converted into a bar, different atmosphere, but really down to earth people.  seating is an interesting situation. but they make all their juices from scratch, which makes my screwdriver that much tastier!!!

Stopped by real quick on an early friday afternoon. Didn't really get to hang out. We only had a few minutes for a quick drink.

I had the tuaca sidecar. Tasty. A bit tart though; they used fresh squeezed citrus juices. Could've used a bit more brandy.

Wife had the watermelon somethin. Again, bonus points for using fresh juice, but she said it tasted a little watered down. The drink she originally ordered wasn't available cuz they didn't have the syrup made. You'd think they have it all together before the weekend rush, right? They get a pass if the ingredients weren't available.

Anyhow, I appreciate the fresh seasonal ingredients. Featuring local artists is cool too.

Nice local bar.  Friendly vibe.  As others have mentioned, it's in an old house, maybe '40s vintage or so.  There is a pool table in one of the rooms now.  Three dollar happy hour beer made me happy, I had Mirror Pond.  I'd easily give it 4 stars except I couldn't seem to find a spot where I wasn't re-processing somebody else's used cig smoke.  In fact, a heavy cigarette atmosphere pretty much permeates the place.  But I did feel welcome, and did like it enough that I'll probably stop in again anyway to support.

The art is, well, interesting.  Some of it I liked, some not so much.  Some made me want to drink, which, I guess in a bar is probably just fine.

As someone under 21, I was a little intimidated of going in to this bar. My friend, who is over 21, wanted to go get a drink, & I politely agreed to go in as a minor & keep a low profile. I ended up drinking a soda or two, and sitting on their couches. They didn't even ID me - not sure if that is good or bad. There weren't any creeps, though, & I was surprised. (I always had pictured bars as a place where scary tattooed men hung out & hit on young women.) The atmosphere in here was nice, as well.

When I went with a group of friends back in January, I had a really great experience. We arrived maybe 15 minutes before last call, which was kinda cutting it close. Surprisingly for a Reno bar, it was pretty busy on a weekday night right before closing. The bar stools were full so my group of friends went into the first little room adjacent to the main bar to sit down on the couches. Couches at a bar is a seriously underrated concept. I really liked the atmosphere of Strega, it felt really comfy (it was a house, after all), and it was pretty local.
I found the art interesting enough to look around for a little while. I don't usually think of bar art as such a great idea, but here the pieces were just the right amount of interesting to contribute to the atmosphere. When I wandered into the other room, I found a pretty intense game of pool going on.
A bartender (I think he said he was a co-owner) approached us to see if we wanted anything before last call. We ordered a round and he returned promptly with a round of shots and five draft beers to chase with. Who does that? He seemed pretty intoxicated himself and stayed a minute to chat. I really liked this guy, he was super nice and will be a top reason to return to Strega.

Can somebody please tell artists that taking iconographic portraits of famous people, blowing them up and making them into two-tone pop art pieces is overdone and is not creative?

I can think of at least 4 different bars with the same artwork.
Hell, I think Ikea sells them too.

Using photoshop ::does not equal:: artistic skill.

But this is a bar, not a gallery, so I won't fault Strega for this.

    -Good creative cocktails.
    -Free cheese & crackers.
    -Friendly quick staff.

-Could use some darker beer selections.

We tried this place out tonight, and I have to say that Ernie has hit it right on the nose.  We had a great time, mainly because my group got there early enough to claim the room with couches.  The drinks are fantastic, and the service is really friendly, but the line at the bar can get lengthy, especially since there is no section of the bar set aside for people to order drinks.  I'd highly recommend everybody try it, but I hope they manage to do something about the drink ordering.

I really want this place to succeed, but I'm dubious as to whether it's going to be around by the end of the year.

The place is a remodeled house with a small patio on the front.  The house's layout is such that the place is two rooms wide, and three rooms deep.  The front right room has two small couches and a coffee table. The other two rooms on the right are basically empty, and serve as galleries, with some paintings hanging on the walls.  On the left side, you come in to a small seating area, with 3 or 4 two-top tables, and the bar is in the next room.  The bar is small, I think with seven seats across, and the last room in the house appears to be the storage/prep area.

The whole feel of the place is very artsy and homey, with warm, colorful walls, with nice accent molding around the doors and windows.

When I walked in, all the seats at the bar were taken except one, which was kindly offered to be by another patron, and another warmly introduced himself to me.  So, points for a neighborhood, friendly feel  On the other hand, I'm not sure how this kind of set up is going to work as a business.  If the stools are actually occupied at the bar, it's unclear where a customer would go to get a drink.  The bar would serve as a major choke-point, not allowing for the kind of traffic that a bar would need to succeed.  The only way I can see this working is if they have 3 or 4 cocktail waitresses, who are floating around the rooms - which ideally would be crowded and a nightmare to navigate with a tray of drinks.

Now, the other "review" does mention plans for a pool table and a backyard patio, neither of which would address the problems with getting drinks, but would round out the homey feel of the joint.

Granted, in the second room on the right, there were counter tops sitting on the floor (I'd guess they're going to put little bar ledges around the walls), so it's obvious the place is being worked on.
They just opened a week ago, so maybe some of this will improve given time, and they'll figure out how they'll do the volume to survive as a bar.

All that being said, the place definitely has potential, if they can figure out how they're going to keep drinks in people's hands.  I really would love to see the place make it, I'm just not super optimistic about it . . .
