Each time I return to Suga's, I wonder why I don't make the trek here more often. Â What is it about us Beaumonter's that we think our downtown is sooooo far away? Â Less than 10 minutes from home, and I can be transported to New Orlean's. Â I don't think there is another place around here that you can say that about. Â I love meeting ladies for lunch here. Â It just makes you feel special. Â The food is absolutely delicious. Â I love the fresh salad with the crab cake. Every side that I have had has been wonderful. Â And the fish - YUM. Â The service is attentive and the iced tea is excellent.
That should be a given, but how many times are we greeted at other restaurants with colored water. Â Give me some tea with teeth in it. Â Taking advantage of one of the few patio dining area's in beaumont is also a treat. Â Yes, it is a little pricier in the evening, but to have a jewel like this here in Beaumont is something that I need to support before it goes the way of other fine dining establishments that have disappeared from our scene. Â Well, I think I have just talked myself into having my husband meet me for lunch there today!
For my friends' birthdays we went to Sugas for dinner after our previous reservations fell through at another place. I'm glad it did too because this place as phenomenal!
From the outside you wouldn't expect Sugas to be fancy at all; what with its brick building and urban surroundings. Then you walk in and it's pinkies out 24/7 type fancy! The atmosphere was nice and relaxing. The lights dimmed randomly which was a little confusing but the ambiance was still exquisite. It was a Tuesday night so it wasn't terribly busy, just a few other large groups as well as us.
April was our server and she was extremely kind and courteous. (As was the rest of the staff, very friendly.) She was helpful answering each of our questions about the menu (what's good, what's not, etc.) and if she didn't know she made sure to find someone who did.
And as a vegan, I always have to ask for specific things for my food when I'm in a restaurant and from my experience with southern restaurants, they don't even know what vegan is without explanation. I'm telling you though, they surprised me here at Sugas. There aren't many on-menu vegan options, but the wait staff told me that the chef (Steve Curtis, I believe) had a pretty extensive knowledge of vegan foods and could prepare anything as long as you ask. The biggest treat for me was finding out the fried green tomatoes were VEGAN!
I could have just eaten those all night. They were so good it brought me back to when my own memaw would make them. Melt in your mouth good. They were fantastic! I definitely recommend trying those if you roll through.
We brought in a couple of our own bottles of wine for the corkage fee of $20. It's a little more expensive than we thought, but the service and food was great.
Bathrooms were very clean and fancy.
I'll definitely come back here whenever I come back to Texas.
My friend and I went here as suggested by the wedding events that we attended the day before as apart of their ending the weekend. We knew were going to be hungry so made reservations for 11 AM instead of the 1230 after hotel checkout. It wasn't far from Hotel Elegante so we got there a half an hour early. That whole downtown was a ghost town-very eerie but interesting. After we explored downtown we made it back to the restaurant and was seated promptly after letting them know I had a reservation (Open Table dining points-that I still have yet to get cause the restaurant doesn't know what they are doing but I digress) We didn't see a buffet advertised on their website and when the waitress came to get our order she stated that they stopped the buffet and just never updated their website since everyone is on Facebook now. Well excuse me. We were through and waiting to see why it was $30 a person for a brunch buffet. Alas I was too hungry to try and find something else in this rather desolate town so I saw quite a few things on the menu that looked good anyway. I got the chicken and waffles and asked for my waffle to be a southern pecan waffle of which they obliged and my friend got the southern pecan waffle with a side of every dang thang!! I was like girl you are not gonna eat all that food!! (She didn't) The portions were great and the chef gave us some lagniappe of cheeses, fruit, and breads since he knew we came for a buffet. The chicken was really tasty and crispy. The pecan waffle was ok just not crispy enough for me. But still good as the batter had a light sweetness to it. I also order a side of the guess what (cheesy grits-you guessed it) and they did not disappoint at all. They were sooooooo good and cheesy and the consistency was perfect. We were waited on very well by our waitress I wish we remembered her name. She was of the Asian persuasion cute young lady very pleasant and accommodating. I sampled all of my friends sides since I knew she wasn't gonna eat them and they were very tasty also (smoked salmon and eggs). Needless to say I was ready to pay 60 dollars but for 39.00 it fit the bill and made us full for the road. I forgot to mention when you sit down their bread consist of pastries and breads. The breads they could have kept especially that rock hard biscuit but the pastries were divine. One was of a raspberry cheesecake like with lemon and the other was like a chocolate cake. Very good. There was also a lady their singing jazz/blues who was very good. She did a whole hour set while we were there on the piano. The decor is really nice with great paintings that were consistent with the type of place it was. There are two levels to this place and beautiful patio on both levels that when the weather is great will be a great experience. One of the other waiters I think was diggin' on my friend cause he kept asking us how we were doing and even filled up our glasses of water a few times and givin' her the side eye ;-) (Somebodies got jungle fever!) Â If ever in town again I will stop by and maybe try their other stuff on the menu. The experience was truly a delight.
Review Source:Had dinner there tonight with a client. Â It was late on a Monday night and the place was almost empty. Â Probably because there was almost no one there, our waiter was very helpful and attentive. Â Dinner was delicious. I had the 8 oz buffalo filet. Â I ordered it medium but it was slightly over cooked (still delicious though). Â The sides were delicious as well. Â I would recommend this place but probably not on a busy night like a weekend night.
Review Source:This was the only place we could find open for Brunch on Sunday in downtown Beaumont. We enjoyed their live music and had excellent service; our glasses never went down halfway. Â The food was good, however the crab legs were bit dry. Would have given them a higher star rating, however their presentation was adequate and not well maintained.
Review Source:I find the three and two star reviews disappointing because my experience was very different, and a great one. By and large, and I realize this is a bold statement in the company of my fellow reviewers, this is not only the best restaurant in Beaumont, but one of the best *things to experience* in Beaumont, period.
I grew up in Beaumont but headed to Dallas for college about 10 yrs. ago and have been there ever since. I came down to visit my parents this week and I have always heard rave reviews about Suga's from them so I decided to book us a reservation for tonight (Tuesday, March 15, 2011). Went to the website first to view the menu and was impressed at how professional and user friendly the website was. The restaurant looked very modern, yet warm and inviting.
Our reservations were for 6:30 and we were the first ones there for the evening (rightly so since no one but parents, like ourselves, eat that early). Pulling into the parking lot, I was impressed. The restaurant is housed in what apparently used to be an old printers building. The faded circa WWII painted sign is still visible on the side of the building. Awesome. I love buildings that tell stories. Upon entry, you are instantly struck by spacious bar, 20 ft. tall ceilings, floor-to-ceiling oak pillars and magnificent brown antique tin-tile roof. There are accent lamps on each side of the pillars with a warm glow. Just like the website accurately portrayed, a very modern, swanky place, but extremely warm and inviting. We could see the amazing patio with a waterfall fountain through the 10ft tall windows lining the back of the restaurant. We were sat in a half-moon high-back booth that was comfortable and not too hard to get in and out of for pit stops. Our waiter was named Justin, was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, very attentive, but not annoyingly so. We decided to take our time and order slowly, and eat our food even slower. For an appetizer, we ordered the fried okra which came with the shrimp coleslaw. We thought that it had too much batter and not enough okra (think Chili's chicken tenders). The shrimp coleslaw was fantastic, warm, and not an overpowering cabbage taste. As we finished our appetizer we were pleased to see about 7-10 other occupied tables throughout the restaurant (no one wants to eat alone and have the waiter looking over your shoulder and filling up your drink the second you take a sip). We next ordered the side caesar salads which had the perfect amount of dressing, iceberg lettuce was crunchy, crumbled bacon pieces on top with croutons surrounding the circumference of the salad. Definitely try that. My entree' was the crab-stuffed beef tenderloin filet with a seafood cream sauce with crawfish cornbread dressing on the side, and my wife got the filet with madeira sauce and garlic mashed potatoes . Oh. My. Goodness. The presentation was beautiful (will post photos later), almost dessert like. The steak was tender, cooked to perfection and the seafood cream sauce was delectable. The filet madeira was sweet and juicy. For dessert, we went with the Texas Millionaire cheesecake. Get this only if you LOVE chocolate like I do. Basically everything about it is chocolate from the filling to the crust. I forgot to mention that the owner came by and introduced herself and told us she was honored to have us with them that night which was a nice touch. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because the waiter brought us our bill in the middle of dessert. I hate that. It's like pulling the plug on the sound system at a party. Then, once set on the table, he was very anxious to take it from us once signed. We had to tell him we weren't ready to give it to him. So Suga's, if you're reading this, have your waiters bring the bill when your patrons are completely finished.
I need to talk to my fellow Beaumonters here. I love this town and one of the big demises in Beaumont's culinary world is the over-abundance of chain restaurants and not enough local vibe. Suga's is one of the best things to happen to Beaumont. A truly original masterpiece in downtown (a downtown which I give kudos to for trying to revive itself to its former glory and be relevant). Please support your local restaurants, especially this one. I know it can't be an everyday place for everyone because it's expensive ($140 for us), but those that can, think of it and go there as often as you can.
Pretty disappointed the 2nd time around....
The appetizer platter was great but my medium rare steak was severely undercooked. When I cut into my steak it was hard to cut because the meat was so rare that the steak knife was unable to cut the tendons in the meat, and it was a deep red, almost maroon.
Once again, the music was way to loud for a large party to be able to visit... and we are a loud family!
I happened to be in Beaumont during the lunch hour after an appt., so I decided to call a lawyer friend of mine for a lunch recommendation. Here were his questions and my answers. Where are you? Lamar University. What are you in the mood for? Anything good? From that brief Q & A, he sends me up MLK to Downtown for Suga's. While there is parking on the street if you can find it, there are two adjoining lots for $5 each. The two story, dark brick building looks historic. Once inside, I was greeted immediately and while she led me to my seat, I passed a set of stairs for a private party room with outdoor pation, gelato bar and a really nice dark wood and marble bar. The jazz influence is evident with the curtain and piano in the foreground and the tasteful paintings (and Miles Davis bust) on the walls. The furniture is nice and the carpet modern, giving a real nice comfortable feel to the place, regardless if you were there day or night time. Jose my server asked me if I wanted the buffet or the menu. I checked out both. For $12, I could get my fill of soup, salad, baked chicken, sirloin steak, broccoli rice casserole, etc, etc., including dessert. The lunch menu included great salads from $8-16 and sandwiches from $10-12. The uniquely southern lunch entrees included Bayou Catfish, fried $12 or blackened $14, a fried shrimp platter $14, Prime Rib $15, Chicken Fried Steak or CFC for $12, Crawfish or Shrimp Carbonera for $12 and Country Meatloaf for $12. I went the comfort route and ordered the CFS in a buttermilk batter with tasso garlic gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and braised greens. The CFS was a little over fried and the mashies were fine, but the greens were outstanding. I am not a real big fan, but these were very tasty. Lunch was served with hot fresh rolls and desserts $7-$10 included bread pudding, peach cobbler, black magic cake, creme brulee, three kinds of cheesecake and tres leches.
I have to believe the ambiance at night is outstanding on the nights they are playing jazz. At lunch they played some great straight jazz that made it easy to linger. Outside there is a great patio complete with walled fountains and comfortable seating.
The dinner menu is a great selection of fowl, beef and fish from $16-$36 with an average of $25. The short ribs, beef tenderloin, grilled red snapper and bayou stuffed chicken sounded really appealing.
If you are traveling and find yourself near or around downtown, take the time to check Suga's out. I was glad that I did. I dare say, it would even be worth a little get way if you wanted to enjoy the jazz and stay overnight.
