I go here for lunch, maybe like twice a month. Food is pretty decent at a reasonable price. Their beer selection on tap isn't extensive but I'm always good for a Sam Seasonal anyway. The staff is kinda meh but the food typically makes up for it. I'll continue to go here for the convenience, taste of food and price. Are there better places? Sure. But this place is good enough for me.
Review Source:Super nice wait staff, cute little place, but the food is kinda meh. The vegetarian tortellini was bland and over-sauced, and I can't recommend it. The fries and chicken tenders were okay, the turkey club was mediocre. Our waitress was super nice tho, so I'd try the place again, but I would order different food.
Review Source:If it wasn't a matter of generalization, I would give this place 5 stars on its food. Â The portions are a bit too big for me, but I always love how it tastes! Â Whatever I can't finish I always take home. Â This is definitely a place you should come to on an empty stomach. Â They'll have no problems filling it up for you. (btw, I'm usually here during dinner on Sundays where some of the meals are discounted after 5pm - I think this also follows on Tuesday nights.)
What I don;t like is the decor.. Â I don't mind places that want to pay tribute to people. but to have like MOST Of its walls in the main dining hall covered in framed pictures makes it feel a little cramped and unimaginative like they couldn't have an interior designer or something... Â Also the furniture is green and sort of bland... It's just dated.
The service - fast, but for as many times as I've been here the waitresses are forgettable. Â Don't get me wrong, they're nice, but I can't really remember any of their names, what they look like.. They just kind of do their job & that's it. Â Or maybe I just keep getting the same one waitress... I dunno.
I also find it strange that they serve you a bread basket of scones and an italian loaf of bread sliced in half.. I'm sure dinner rolls aren't too expensive.
Aside from those awkward details, I still say you should go for the food. Â It's not disappointing at all.
Bring your appetite to The Sumney Tavern on Sunday mornings. Â The Sumney's Sunday Brunch is the best. You have a buffet with scrambled eggs, breakfast meats, french toast, waffles, chipped beef, pastry and an omelette bar to choose from. Â The staff is friendly and attentive. Â Your coffee and juice are constantly refilled. Â The atmosphere is rustic and full of charm.
Review Source:As you can see I have the Sumney 5 stars. If I could, id put an asterisk next to it. Why?
I went for brunch, so I didnt order from the menu.
The brunch was really well done. The one thing I recommend is getting there early. I arrived there at about 9:00 am, and the place was practically empty. Get there early because we heard people start pouring in between 10-12.
The food: I thought overall the food was really, really good. I had some french toast, scrambled eggs, bacon, ham, potatoes, cream chipped beef, and fruit. All of which was cooked perfectly and was nice and hot in the buffet. The fruit was fresh, and flavorful.
I definitely recommend the Sumney for brunch on Sundays, but get there early!
and if you have a large group, make reservations ahead of time.
Went for dinner mid-week; expectations were not high and they were barely met. Â Husband and I ordered a cocktail and a glass of non-vintage, middle of the road glass of pinot grigio -- cocktail price was reasonable but the wine was a usurious $8 per tiny glass. Â Husband ordered the meatloaf special and I ordered a sandwich that sounded pretty good. Â Meatloaf special was ok, large portions of mediocre food, but my sandwich was terrible. The chicken portion was tiny, the promised spinach was only a leaf and the roasted peppers non-existant. Worst was the promised ciabatta roll was substituted with the fluffy, non-bread tasting rolls they sell in supermarkets -- and neither the server nor the manager felt the substitution was worth mentioning. Â All in all, it was pretty obvious why the place was empty, even with the diner across the street closed for some mysterious reason
Review Source:My wife and I were there for dinner last Thursday.
I'll call it slightly above average...nice atmosphere, comfortable booth, clean, good service, reasonable price.
My french dip was good and my wife loved the buffalo chicken salad (can't quite remember what it was called.)
We'll be back.
Stopped in for a Sunday morning brunch with few friends.
Highly recommended if you are in the area.
Why the low rating then, you ask?
The place was packed, as it usually is, I'm told. Â So, one would think that if they know they get huge crowd on Sundays for brunch, they would staff the day appropriately. Â Our server was swamped and we had quite a while for anything. Â Our waters didn't get refilled and even had to ask other staff members to refill our juice and coffee - who was very nice and did so promptly. Lost a start for that.
As for the food - omlet and waffle station was pretty good. Â Other assortments of egg/potato/meats were delicious as well. Â Their pastry didn't seem fresh - lost a star for that.
So, if you decide to come, don't forget to make a reservation. Â As this place does get packed for their sunday brunches. Â Also, come early. Â We went around 11. Â It started getting busy from then on.
There is a bar on one side. Â And for a place claiming to be an Irish Pub, that area seemed pretty small.
They also have outdoor seating, although it was pretty chilly when we went.
I've been to the Sumney a few times, but I've only gotten food 3 times, and while the bartenders are always friendly and good, the food is not the greatest.
The first time I ate here, I got the "unlimited fish n chips" which sounds like a good deal, but the fish is as big as the plate, and is sitting on a plate full of fries. I couldn't even finish one dish, and it was more expensive then just the regular fish n chips in the menu. It wasn't anything special, and I found pin bones in the fish, I actually had one stuck in my throat!
Next time  I went there for lunch and got the Soup and Salad. Caesar Salad and their "famous" irish potato soup. The salad was okay,if not a little overdressed, and the soup was bland, not really any flavor.
Last time I ordered the Irish Nachos because I had seen them on the menu and the description makes them sound delicious. It is there famous homemade chips, covered in cheese and bacon. Well, not so much. It was really just a ton of really thick, burned potato chips with no flavor, and a bunch of bacon and cheese piled in the middle, only about 1/3 of the chips even had cheese on them.
I enjoy the atmosphere and the bartenders, and the drinks or great, but I'm going to stay away from the food from now on.
My family loves the Sunday brunch. Â My father really enjoys it, so we went there for his birthday. Â It was 4 adults and 2 children (ages 4 and 6). Â We had a great breakfast and the price is right for the adults ($10.95 per person). Â My complaint and reason we do not go more often is the price for the kids. Â It is $7.95 per child. Â Which is a bit expensive for kids breakfast meals. Â Most kids under 8 do not eat lots. Â Another problem is that they charged $2.25 for each of my kids milk that they had with their breakfast. Â So I paid as much for my kids as I did for the adults. Â I think they should lower the children's price for the breakfast/brunch. Â A regular kids menu price is $6.99, which includes a drink. Â My parents had juice and hot beverages and they were only charged the $10.95. Â Their drinks were included. Â I think the children drinks should be included, too.
Other than the price for the children's brunch, we really enjoy the Sumney Taverm.
Hmm.  I used to love this place, but I think budget cuts due to the economy  has definitely affected food quality and quantity. It's understandable that restaurants would want to save, but I think they are going about it the wrong way.
They used to have AMAZING buffalo burgers. The burgers are still good but now they have really shrunk in size. The burgers used to come with fries, which were very fresh tasting. Now the burgers come with a few chips. The sauce is smaller and tastes different.
A couple of times, I have been here I've ordered something different to try what else was on the menu. Â It was a disappointment. The meatloaf didn't even taste fresh. It tasted the way frozen beef does.... like the flavor had washed out. Â I was really disappointed. I really tried to give this place a chance again out of customer loyalty but the trend has been going on for a while now.
I'm hopefully they will improve.
The beer selection is good, the food is good, but it can be a little spendier than our other pub haunts. Instead of $30 to $40 for a couple, we always seem to rack up something more like $40 to $50. It seems that we just buy more food when we are there, and that is a good thing.
Oddly noisy, sometimes, when seated in the main area. This would be another go-to bar for Merck, so it is probably crowded during the usual afterwork hours. If you are looking for a crowd, that would be a good thing.
The Sumney is an American bistro with an Irish accent (their words, not mine). It's nothing out of the ordinary, but the service is friendly, and their menu's reasonably priced: they've daily specials and a standing lunch special, where $6 gets you a pint and a burger.
Recently I had a so-so roast beef sandwich here. It came out surprisingly rare; I almost expected it to wave back at me. (Probably not the best choice for lunch.) On the side, I enjoyed a cup of their Irish potato soup (appropriate, eh?), warm and comforting.
This homey, roomy venue has lots of parking, so stop in for drinks and bring friends!
Been coming here for years. Lately with the the soft economy they've been running some great specials. On Sundays they have a $9.95 English Cut Prime Rib Special complete with salad and 2 sides. The first time I ordered it I thought they made a mistake because I got 2 1/2" thick slabs, each almost 1/2 the size of the dinner plate! Â Our server Becky assured us the serving size was correct. On request she brought a cup of some great aus jus. Only complaint was the mashed potatoes could have been a bit warmer. Must be the best deal in town!
Great place to watch local sports too!
So I'm a member of a prominent choir in Philadelphia (name withheld to protect the innocent...namely me) and the other night, during our ridiculously long holiday season, we found ourselves in a near blizzard out in Landsdale rehearsing ALL DAY at North Penn High School for a concert that same night. Needless to say, after hour 2 1/2 hour rehearsal, my friends and I were not in the best of spirits and decided that some form of alcoholic libation was in order to prepare ourselves for another 2 hours of singing the same Christmas carols we had just rehearsed. Unfortunately, none of us knew where to go and relied on an iPhone to give us a hint. Thus, we found ourselves at the Sumney Tavern.
We walked in and we greeted by smiling servers and were promptly given a table that could seat almost all of us (the other 3 people had a table directly behind so we could still converse). The atmosphere was warm, although it definitely had a distinct chain-restaurant type feel. The menu itself was the same way, although it was definitely a bit overwhelming. It was HUGE and had wayyyyy to many words in their descriptions (anecdotes and the like). I was definitely thrown off spent a good 10 minutes deciding.
Anyway, to get straight to the point, the food was delicious and solid tavern food. I had a corn beef reuben and it was the perfect amount (although my friend's had a visible amount of more meat, not that I needed it but still). The sandwiches are served with HOME MADE potato chips that are almost as good as the ones my dad makes in his restaurant. Another friend had some maple-glazed salmon that looked and smelled divine as well. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try it, though. Everyone basically DEVOURED their food.
Also, the prices are super reasonable. I'm always surprised about how much cheaper food and drink is sometimes outside of the city. My raspberry martini (Stoli Razz and Chambord) was only $6.95 and it was HUGE. Seriously, when was the last time any of you saw that in a Center City restaurant? They had a few seasonal martinis on special, but I definitely couldn't have handled more than one and then performed. Unfortunately, the beer and wine list left something to be desired but that's just me being snobby.
If I'm ever back in the area, I would definitely place this near the very top of my list of restaurants to visit, but I really don't like Landsdale so I doubt I'll be back anytime soon. Much love, though :D
I have a new favorite Happy Hour haunt. Â $3.95 martinis, beer specials, and 25 cent wings and potato skins. Â The wings are alright, but 25 cent potato skins are AWESOME.
For lunch or light dinner, I'm a huge fan of their portabella bruschetta appetizer. Â Their sandwiches and burgers are good, but I haven't had any of their dinners in a long time. Â In nice weather their outside deck has seating for 25-30 people.
