As a kid, I always thought that by now, I'd be an astronaut exploring our solar system and possibly beyond, stretching the limits of human exploration in search of answers to the deepest and most fundamental questions in the universe.
Instead, I somehow ended up sitting at a BYOB restaurant in Central Jersey that's reminiscent of a Japanese bath house. Not that I'm an expert on Japanese bath houses but I imagine that it's something like this. And for Central Jersey, it would be a really nice bath house. If there's a lesson in all this, say no to drugs and stay in school kids.
Although it's a Japanese restaurant the portions are decidedly American. I consider myself a pretty good eater and I still couldn't finish my lunch special. The biggest disappointment is that it's BYOB yet there isn't a liquor store near by to buy that B. So if coming here for the BYOB make sure to plan ahead and get the the B before heading here. Cuz if you don't you'll just end up with a big W and what fun is that?
Anyway, the food is pretty good and service needs an upgrade. But for the area, 4 stars all the way.
This is our new favorite place. We live only a mile away, but never really went here until a recent groupon. That got us hooked. Their sushi is very fresh and very good. Their menu is full of great choices. We have never had a bad meal here. Their ahi tuna is done like I've never had it and is one of my favorite things to get. Only complaint is the place is kind of pricey.
Review Source:NEVER HAD SUCH A HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! We have been going to Sumo for years. The food has always been decent and the service has been slowly going downhill....now it is absolutely horrible. We enjoy BYOB restaurants and often bring bottles of wine and a bottle or two of Martinelli's (sparkling apple cider) for our kids. We dined at Sumo last night and upon completion of our meal the servers asked what they should do with our ice bucket. I said we would take care of recorking the 2 wine bottles and the kids would drink the cider. The servers smiled and took the bucket away - at the time I assumed to dry our bottles. Instead they took it to the counter and started pouring and DRINKING our wine right in the restaurant. I stood and asked loudly why they were drinking our wine and one server (funny enough the one drinking the Martinelli's) made the disgusting gesture of putting her finger into her mouth (as if to suggest throwing up). Three servers were all drinking and laughing clearly at our expense (little did they know they were drinking two $30 bottles of wine and a $2 bottle of cider). We immediately removed the tip completely from our check and wrote all over the bill that we hoped they enjoyed drinking their tip. We will never go back.
Review Source:Don't go here. Â We tried it on a whim with a Groupon and ended up paying much more than bargained for, were even chased out into the parking lot when the waiter felt that we should have left more of a tip. Â Last time I checked tipping was optional. Â I left a tip commensurate with the bad service (still around 15%) and that wasn't enough. Â How humiliating and rediculous.
Review Source:Had a work dinner here recently and enjoyed it, but only because I wasn't paying. Bad variety and prices for the sushi dinners (soup/salad, sushi, roll): $25 and up. Few of the rolls are less than $12. Everything we had was very, very good, though. The booths are really uncomfortable: the table is too far away, the seats are solid wood, and the benches are too long for two people but too short for three people, so the spacing is weird. Service was good.
Review Source:I had such high hopes after reading reviews of Sumo. Â I came here with some colleagues for a business meeting. Â First off, the miso soup was cold....COLD! Â When we said something, the waitress just shrugged. Â Also, the seaweed in the soup tasted fishy. Â I have NEVER had miso soup that tasted fishy. Â *dry heave*
Okay, let's move on to the appetizer. Â Not very appetizing. Â We ordered the Sumo sampler. Â Do not order this unless you like mystery pieces that are caked with greasy tempura batter. Â Don't get me wrong, I like a little tempura, but really guys.... Â I wasn't sure what was being served, since the menu didn't explain just what was in the sampler. Â I think that the piece I took surely had to be part of a napkin that was deep-fried. Â Everyone was afraid to take any more pieces after that.
Now the sushi....surely this has to be good, since it is in the name. Â Oh the humanity.... Â My rolls sounded so good in the descriptions. Â The fish was room temperature and mushy. Â I'm guessing that , since it was Monday, these must have been the leftovers from the weekend. Â I took a few bites and threw out the rest. Â I didn't want to risk havng any gastric distress. Â At least I didn't waste any money. Â After all, the vendors we met with picked up the bill.
Please....someone tell me where to get good sushi in Pennington!
I really like the sushi. But when you have Sushi in your name you should have the best in the world. I would say it is 3 our of 5 stars. Spicy tuna should be spicy.
When you eat there the furniture is very uncomfortable. Not really built for children at all.
I will say a huge bonus is that when you do have children the waiter brought over children's chop sticks and it made her day. She was so happy and actually tried all of the food.
The food is Good and price is fair
My friend brought me to this place, since he comes here for lunch. We decided to go all out and get their sushi specials which included umi or sea urchin. That stuff is wack! It looks and smells like brain goop and the taste a'int much better. Some people say it's an acquired taste, but you gotta draw the line somewhere.
On the plus side, this is the only place I know that has fried banana in a sushi roll which is outstanding. The rest of the stuff here is about average.
