Organized an event for 13 of my clients to come here for dinner last night. It went really well. I made a reservation on the phone a few days ahead of time.

We had one server for the night and she was really good. She stayed on top of us and kept things moving which we appreciated. She even offered to do separate checks for us at the end (well, I don't think she was enthused, but she offered and we took her up on it) and that is a huge help since half my table was pregnant ladies and the other half were like me enjoying a few drinks each. Everyone paid what they ordered and walked away happy.

The food was good! I had the lamb burger with a side salad with their lemon vinegrette. I loved the dressing and the salad was simple but good (I like dark leafy greens). The lamb burger was big and messy, I ate it half with fork and knife/other half tried with my hands.

Most of us had one of the burgers and all reported being very happy.

The drinks were yummy, I had a widows kiss and I wish I would have ordered it for dessert.

I found a promotional coupon for this place at a local business and decided to give it a try on a Saturday for lunch.

Sat at the bar and chatted with a couple of bartenders who were both really friendly and helpful. I didn't know which beer to try so I received a couple of samples and ended up ordering two beers with my burger.

Started with their basic burger, which was very good overall. Cooked the way I like it, and it held together all the way through. The pretzel bun was a little more carbs than I'm used to having with a burger, and would prefer a shorter bun option if available next time. Good burger for sure, but not certain it's worth ten bucks, and here's why.

The fries that accompanied my burger were a big disappointment. I didn't even finish them and that is unusual for me. They tasted like a frozen product...just no real good potato flavor, so I only tasted the frying oil.

I will try this place again, mainly because of the energy of the crew and the flavor of the burger patty, however I'll inquire about a substitution for the fries, even if there's a bit of an upcharge.

Menu looked a little pricey, but the good was worth it. Burgers were perfection, and the steak salad was delish. Will definitely stop by again if in the area.

Thanks to the yelp app I was able to find this great place to enjoy dinner at while in the area. Food was delicious. We started with wings and their pretzel bread. The wings where typical but the pretzel bread was divine.  I only wish the waitress had informed us that 1 order would not be enough to share amongst our whole party of 8 people. We would have ordered more. Next came the salads with the cilantro dressing. I found it delicious. The guys in the group didn't care for the "spring greens mix" or weeds as they call them. For dinner, I ordered the OG burger. It was delicious. And huge! I highly recommend it. The staff was very nice and attentive.

Also, we were in need of some ibuprofen for my 8yo nephew because he had a headache. The gentleman that we asked was kind enough to go out to his car during his break and get some for us, that's generous service that's above and beyond.

Excellent place! Our service was spot on  - our waitress was very nice and friendly. Checked in on us but not too much...just made sure that we had what we wanted and that we were happy with what we got.
So, they have vodka shot girls, which seemed strange because I associate that with a club, but they were just offering samples and not selling shots at all. So it was actually a great way to sample a few of the new infused vodkas without the pressure of buying a shot I'm not sure I would like.
Food was truly, truly amazing and what you want when you go out to dinner. We ordered the sticky wings, watermelon salad and scallops. Everything was beyond delicious. The waitress told us to try the chimichurri steak next time, it's supposed to be phenomenal.  The atmosphere is nice, very clean and nice lightening, etc. We will definitely be back.
Oh - live music too, but we had to get back home to the kids. Looked like a great band though and cozy spots to watch music.

Don't let the outside fool you! Yes, it's a bar, no, it's not a 'biker ' bar.  Hamburgers are great. Stay away from calamari. Really good place to grab some food and a drink

Best place to eat in Capo beach. They took dirty old Coconuts building and gutted it, really made it nice. All the food I've had there was over the top delish. It's hard to not order everything! The drinks are also yummy, I think it has the quality of a much higher priced place, but since it's here in Capo beach, the atmosphere is more casual than the food. Which is great for me. I love to stop here on the way home from beach bike rides for a drink. Planning on doing brunch next week for a friends birthday Apple pie stuffed french toast? Yes!

I have been back a couple of times, it's defiantly better now that they have the kinks worked out. I wish I could give em3 1/2. Still a little slow but getting better. I really like their burger sliders. You get 3 different ones. I've also had the seared ahi sliders, they were a great way to change up the norm as far as bar food. They put them on pretzel bread which sounds a little heavy, but they are not, the rolls are light and fluffy and buttery. Drinks are good. I like whiskey and they have some tasty whisky mixed drinks. Bro's GF had a salad that was huge and delicious. They have a good happy hour and decent beer selection. Lots of tv for your game watching pleasure.

I went here a few months back and I had a pretty bad experience. The drinks were ok, but It seems like they missed the mark with the whole cowboy/surf theme. To make things worse they shut down at 1 am.  When I was there with some friends and last call hit, we finished our drinks and asked if we could wait in the front dining room until we got picked up  (it was pretty cold that night and we had a couple of girls with us who were freezing). The staff chose to kick us out on the street with no hesitation. Customer service out the door!  Regardless, I really want to like this place, but it always seems empty when I drive by and not really worth going in. I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 b/c I heard they have a decent Taco Tuesday special. I will update this post once I get a chance to try it.

Well I must say that the only reason I visited this restaurant was because it was pretty close to the time share where we were staying. But I must admit that it turned out being a  fairly decent little restaurant. Not in the best of areas but the food turned was pretty good. We ordered Cobb pulled pork salad and skirt steak salad and it was excellent. I can't give it more than 3 stars because of its location and for the fact it is way too noisy in there. Oh and before I forget, this is not a place where you should order Margarita's. They are plain down right awful.

I was at Surfin Cowboy last night. I was excited to have a new place in town. The food is decent but over priced for what you got. The waitress and bus boys were very nice. This was our second visit and the experience was pretty much the same both times. With the exception of the following.

I'm a grown person and know how to make a reservation. When asked for a name, phone number, time and number in my party has been communicated to a restaurant via telephone--that my friends--is a reservation. However we were informed I didn't do it correctly and for my trouble received a condescending lecture from a manager (perhaps the owner). I would have been happy to simply wait without all the drama, insult and lack of personal responsibility.

The manager needs some schooling where customer service and simple courtesy are concerned. Don't think I'll be back.

Went to the Surfin Cowboy with the girls on Thursday night then back again for lunch with my husband on Friday.  Both experiences were 2 thumbs up!  the wait staff is excellent will go the extra mile for you if you have questions and the food is very tasty. So impressed with this new venue in town and wish the very best to the owners and general manager (David).  Can't wait to go back and listen to the live music!!

Briana was our waitress, very sweet and helpful. Recommend Happy Hour and appetizers. We shared Fried Mac and Cheese Balls and the Brat of the month served one a Pretzel bun. Then shared the O.G. burger with sweet potato fries. Dave also enjoyed a local beer, from Left Coast Brewery. Everything was delicious!,,,

If you're in the mood for a guilty indulgence, you do not want to miss the Mac and cheese balls. This place is not my cup of tea, but I can see how it would be a great place to watch sports and such. Newly remodeled so it's nice and clean.

Our favorite place in south OC. Amazing food (we love the fresh and tasty burgers, decadent brunch and desserts, fun taco tuesday...ok we like pretty much everything).
The service and staff are friendly and efficient. The bar menu is full of  creative and delicious beverages (yum bacon infused Bloody Mary), and they have great happy hour hours (2-7 weekdays).
So glad this place is here!  We have yet to come when there is a live band, that is next on our list of Surfin Cowboy "to-do's"

I have been excited to check out The Surfin Cowboy since they opened. This spot was right along my usual running route so even when they were closed and remodeling the owner would always come out invite me and my girlfriends to come back soon and check it out when they opened. I finally found a spare moment, so I stopped in! It was about 2pm and I brought a few friends with me. Surprisingly the bar top was almost full and about 3 or 4 tables were taken also. I can only imagine how busy this place gets during peak hours!
We found a table to sit at with extra seats in case any of our other friends showed up because I had invited a few more people. Our server was Bri (Bree, Brie, Bre??), she said "Like the cheese", honestly thats the only way I remembered her name lol. Anyway, she explained the happy hour menu to us which included $3-$6 drinks (beer, wine, ketel1) and about 5 things on their $5 happy hour food menu. The only weird thing to me was that there was no actual happy hour menu. Bri had to tell us what was on the menu. About 4 more people joined our table and she had to tell each one of them the happy hour menu too. That much suck if it gets super busy.
I ordered the garlic parmesan french fries and macaroni balls. The fries were literally the BEST french fries EVER! Each one was flavorful and perfectly crispy. The macaroni balls were so good too, we only wished they were bigger or more of them! They also had this amazing sauce on them, which I would have been happy putting on everything. Later on I ordered the pretzel bread. That was good too, It was served with pickle chips and 2 dipping sauces. I've tasted much better pickle chips and the sauces served with the bread didn't really work with the flavor, I was expecting more of a honey mustard and they served a cheese sauce. Overall the food was great, everything was presented well and we all enjoyed ourselves.
When it came time to pay the bill Bri asked us if we wanted split checks!! I was so shocked! Usually servers act like it's a freaking nightmare to do something like that, but she did it with a smile! I'm really glad I got a chance to check this place out, I'll definitely be back...maybe at night for some country music!

Ok visited today for cinco de mayo.  Listened to some great live music and sampled the special menu. I had the pulled pork quesadilla and a chicken street taco. Both were excellent, very fresh and full of flavor. I especially like the street taco, good mix of spices a nice sauce to add and some fresh lime. Will definitely be back for Taco Tuesday.

Second time here on a  Sat nite. First time great, good crowd and band. Tonight was looking for a repeat. Band was supposed to start at 9, the "Manager" apparently decided the band should not start til after game 1 of Clippers playoff vs Memphis ended. We tried to hang in but come 10 pm and nearly all the customers also having left we threw in towel too.

Lots of unhappy people came and went expecting a good time, I didn't honestly see any sports fans watching the game plus last time I checked sound of music didn't interrupt game video.  Too bad all around, bartenders had zero customers when we left and waitresses were losing more than gaining. Don't think I'll venture there looking for good music and fun on Sat anytime soon.

I don't give out many 5 stars, if it were just for the food, I would give it a 4.  But we were there on a Monday, no less, and they had some world class musicians, Petunia and the Vipers.  I look forward to seeing more music from such talented artists.  It's a very nice comfortable venue.  Also the service was great, the staff was really friendly and treated us well.

My boyfriend and I despise country music. Yet, we still walked into an establishment named The Surfin Cowboy. I am glad we we did. I follow them on Facebook and was enticed by the Taco Tuesday post plus we live pretty darn close so I figured hey why not. The tacos in the Facebook post looked so yummy and they were just as good in person. The steak was not fatty and chewy like the tacos at El Torito Taco Tuesday. I add avocado to almost everything so I asked for avocado and oh boy I got what I wanted...generous chunks of avo. Believe it or not, they provide free chips and salsa and for a place named Surfin Cowboy, they have some of the best chips and salsa around. My boyfriend ordered a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries...it was beautiful and he said it tasted very good too. We will definitely return, which says a lot because in case I haven't mentioned this....we despise country music. This was the only reason they did not get five stars from me; the music made me want to put my avocado decorated fork in my eye.

I was reading some other posts about slow service. We did not experience this. Service was prompt and they were pretty darn busy.

Attended a nonprofit event here last night and I must say that this place is hands down awesome. The craft whiskey cocktails were superior and clearly show they have a mixologist on hand who knows his stuff.

A bunch of us ordered an assortment of appetizers and were blown away. The pork belly and the mac and cheese balls were to die for.

Our server was prompt and very helpful in telling us about the different drinks.

If you are into whiskey then this is the place for you, no longer do you need to drive to San Diego or LA for a good craft whiskey!

This place is Awesome!  My wife and I have been back to this restaurant 3 times in the same 2 weeks, and we plan on coming back frequently!

Our first experience was catching the Brunch - My wife likes two things very much: baked apples and bri Cheese.  So when she saw sliced apples and Bri cheese-stuffed French toast, Boom! Sold.  She said it was the best French toast she's ever had.  I had the 3-little pigs Omelet with Country potatoes, which was amazing and protein packed!  Can't go wrong with 3 different types of meat in your eggs.  The Country potatoes came with bell peppers, which I like very much, and the potatoes are seasoned nicely.

The second time we came for the Monday burger special; I had the lamb burger and my wife had the Black and Blue burger, which comes with Bacon Jam.  BACON JAM! I didn't even know that existed.  Needless to say, both were very delicious and were on the  1/2 off special to boot.

The third time we came for Taco Tuesday; I ordered both types of fish tacos, a steak taco and a pulled pork taco.  All 4 were delicious, the pulled pork was probably my least favorite because it comes with a sweet sauce, and sweet isn't my thing on tacos, but it was definitely unique.  I loved the Blackened fish taco.  Their Taco Tuesday also offers $3 Mexican beers, including Pacifico on draft. My wife had the chicken, pork and steak tacos, and liked them very much.  They come with double corn tortillas, and are of average street-taco size.

Each time we came, service was attentive and friendly, and the chef came out to check if we liked our food, which is always nice.  The décor is fun and provides a unique atmosphere that puts me in a great mood; I'm a sports fan so I appreciate all the Flatscreen's ( I noticed other reviewers annoyed at the live music issue - it is a sports bar and grill after all, so I don't know what people are expecting during the NBA playoffs).

Overall, each visit was a 5-star experience for my wife and I; I enjoy the atmosphere, beer selection, friendly service and unique food options, as well as the variety of specials.

I should preface this review in saying the following: the service here is great, everyone is extremely helpful and friendly, and I hope they are recognized for this. The food and drink is pretty good as well.

So why the low score? After grabbing lunch here, my party and I noticed that a live band would be playing later that evening around 9pm. We decided to come back and enjoy some music and a beer or two since we had done so the previous weekend and liked the atmosphere. So we left and came back around 8:30 to make sure we could settle in to a good spot along the bar.

Again, the service was prompt and friendly, no problems there, but as 9 o'clock came and went there was no indication of the band firing up anytime soon. I started wondering what might be holding them up, when I realized there was a basketball game blaring from the speakers. I figured they were just waiting for the quarter to end or something, but halftime came and went and still no indication of music.

By that time it was 10pm, so I asked the bartender what the deal was, and he told me that management decided to wait until the game ended before the band would play.

This irked me, since I came to the bar for the sole purpose of enjoying some live entertainment. By this time the bar had just about emptied, since clearly no one was interested in whatever game was on, so I too closed my tab and left. No point in dangling from the bar by myself.

I think whoever is calling the shots needs to take a step back and reevaluate what they're trying to accomplish. Now, yes, this place is strapped with screens, so showing sporting events is a no brainer, but I really don't think audio is necessary. Especially after advertising for a band at a certain time. It should mean that band will go on *at that time.* Were I in that band, I wouldn't do business with the Cowboy again. They lost business last night, which is a shame because the fine people behind the bar and working the floor lost money as well. Get it together.

We went there on a Thursday during happy hour because we heard good things about their Thursday wing specials and specialty drinks. We had a sample of each of their flavored wing options and the sweet and sticky wings were hands down the best wings I have ever had. We also shared entrees of massive scallops and amazing salmon which was the highest quality. Our son had a perfect big burger and gourmet style fries...the best. Our waiter was very friendly, prompt and the owner stopped by as well. He was the nicest guy and you could tell he has been working hard to make this place a great destination for great food and live music. We will be going back to see the local bands for sure.

Tried Surfin Cowboy and was pleasantly surprised. 4 stars for what it is and does well - a great atmosphere for a sports bar - comfortable hangout, friendly staff, plenty of TVs. The bonus is the food. Had the grilled Caesar with chicken - great flavors. The burgers looked and smelled great. Interesting beers. Decent, albeit limited, wine selection. Good deals throughout the week. Will definitely be back!

My husband said let's go for a walk and grab a bite to eat at the Surfin Cowboy- if you had ever been to Coconuts you were like me, very low expectations.
The place has 3 sections, a loungy area with bench seats and coffee tables (schwanky), a high top table area with lots of good TV (NFL Season here I come) and a regular seating area with tables. Good atmosphere. The drink menu is good, mezqual anyone? But the food is the real reason we are single-handly keeping them in business. Pork belly w/pickled watermelon rind, preztels w/smoked cheese, watermelon salad w/goat cheese, chimichuri strip steak, burgers, pasta, dessert... Yee-haw & Cowabunga (sorry). Trust me, try it

Of course I came back to this place and I reckon I just might become a regular. Last week tried Taco Tuesday and it was a pleasant surprise. The tacos are $1.50-$2.00. I had the steak, blackened fish and deep fried fish. All were delicious - there was so much meat on em', I actually split em' up. Mexican beers are only 3 bucks each. This is a great new choice in DP for Taco Tuesday.
On Easter Sunday, we tried the brunch menu out. I wish I would have taken a photo of my French toast - it was huge! It was stuffed with apples and Brie cheese and was quite tasty. I wasn't planning on drinking, but was too tempted by the 5 buck Bloody Mary's - spicy, just how I like em'.
It was nice to see the tables fill up for the brunch crowd.

Kudos to the new owners for taking a shabby, faded and unappealing neighborhood bar and creating a clever theme around a surfing cowboy motif. Perfect for an historic town that has a rural cow poking heritage (San Juan Capistrano) and it's own Capistrano Beach, storied surfing hotspot, now part of the City of Dana Point.

We arrived around 5pm on a Saturday. There were no deals to be had on anything. I ordered the fried macaroni balls in tomato bisque sauce that was pretty good but expensive. I drank the local tap water because I was driving. My wife had the watermelon salad which she enjoyed. Our son's girlfriend ordered some sweet potato fries that were delicious. The bill arrived and it was nearly 30 bucks, a lot for three appetizers and one beer.

Like a lot of sports bars, the TV's were blaring and there are a lot of them. Great if you are a sports fan and the game is on, but for the rest of us interested in some conversation, not so great. We asked to be moved around the corner where it was a bit quieter, but that area soon filled up with overly excited and under medicated small children running amok.

The server was very nice and the service was prompt, so props for that. It's a good bar to stop for a beer during happy hour, but I'm not sure I'll eat there again, it just wasn't a good value and the atmosphere is more suited to boozing than eating.

To see and example of why the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is such a joke, check out the wheelchair lift the owners installed to be compliant. It gets wheelchairs over TWO, yes TWO steps down into the adjacent lounge area. It will never get used and it was total waste of money that would otherwise have been better spent. And the city of Dana Point wonders why more businesses aren't opening up? Look at your crazy building codes City Council!

Guys, this is a super place. Really good food, the games are always on, they even turned on the Academy Awards for the patrons to watch. The place is brand new inside. The owner is ALWAYS there "hovering" over all aspects to make sure things are right. Good bartenders who make tall drinks. The skirt steak salad is a must, period. We have had the wings and pork belly which are really good. Large food portions. The calamari was pretty salty both times we've had it and wish they had marinara. Live music has been good the two times we've listened. Def give it a try.

I'm giving  one star because the owner of this establishment was not hospitable at all. The atmosphere is nice and is an upgraded change from the previous bar that was at this location. However, there was no respect for the customer and the owner cared more about the amount he paid for decorations than he cared about the fact that we spent over $100 in this establishment that evening and would have spent another $100 more if he wasn't so rude and inhospitable.

My card was also charged TWICE for our purchases. I attempted to redeem my money and was told to leave. I was then blocked on their social networking sites and they have made no effort in righting the situation.

I would appreciate if they acted like a place of business and corrected the situation rather than acting immature and bashing their customers on their social networking sites.

I went to The Surfin Cowboy for the first time last night with a few of my girlfriends.
We had a great time. We sat at the long community table in the middle and our cocktail server, i think her name was Andrea, explained all of the drinks and what her favorites are to help us make our selections. We ordered the fried mac and cheese and fries they were so good! The bar tenders Tony & Ty were fun and friendly, and made great drinks. They interacted with everyone in the bar and made sure everyone was having a good time. They were very knowledgeable about different types of whiskeys. It is nice to speak with people that can intellegently speak about what they are serving. All of the drinks they make have fresh juices that they make in house. I don't remember exactly what the drinks were called but mine had widow in the name, two of the girls were drinking something with ginger beer and whiskey, and the last one was drinking old fashions. They also make all of their own bitters. One of the added bonuses to fresh drinks with out all of those added sugars that are in premixed drinks means less of a chance of a hangover. The DJ played a great mix of music that was fun to dance to, that anyone could enjoy.

I went to this place for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  The outdoor appearance was decent looking, but I must tell you to not judge a book by it's cover.  I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in.  It is not your typical sports bar.  The restaurant has been recently remodeled.  The interior design, decor, and ambiance was very nice.  The service was excellent!

I had a few appetizers, the Chimichurri skirt steak, and a couple of desserts. The food was amazingly delicious! I also had the Southside martini (cucumber and mint).  It was fantastic.  I do not drink often but I have been thinking about going back at least for that!  The prices for both the drinks and food are reasonable!  They also have happy hour pricing.

I decided to host an event there in a couple of months.  They were extremely easy to work with.  I had a choice of using the private room or the public lounge area. I also received an email from the restaurant manager with logistics.  I host many dinners and happy hours for work and volunteer work.  The staff at Surfin Cowboy has made things very simple and they were very flexible.

I would highly recommend this place for hosted functions or just a nice night out.

Update:  They unblocked me on Facebook, and the owner asked me to get in touch to make this right, so I'm up to three stars, AND I will go back and perhaps we can get it up to the 4/5 range.  The place really does look fun, and the food looks good.  The drinks are very fancy.

My first review wasn't as glowing:

The food looked good and the drinks looked fun, however, my wife and I sat for fifteen minutes and no one even made eye contact, let alone said "sorry, I'll be with you in a minute," and then, when we gently told the woman I took to be the hostess that we were leaving because we sat for fifteen minutes, she said , "oh, ok, see ya."

They're new, so I wanted to cut them some slack , but then the real killer is that I posted this info on their Facebook page, and they blocked me on Facebook!

That's why I decided to come to yelp.  Block this!

(I'll be back, and if I get more normal service, and unblocked on Facebook,  I'll change this review.)
