Love this place. Â Been there many times - oh if the walls could talk. Â There is a little known additional space to this cozy little bar. Â At the back of the bar just past the last bar stool there is a door that leads to a shallow basement for the rest of the building. Â You take about three or four steps down and you are in a room three times the size of the bar up front. Â It is well lit and there are chairs here and there. Â Suzy has her laundry area, storage and a work bench further back in the area, none-the-less this huge room is a wide open area to congregate when up front is filled to capacity (which does not take much). Â Suzy only opens this area to regulars and only on really busy nights. Â Back up front it is not uncommon to see such characters as the mayor, city council members, drunk friendly cops, and other business owners all hang out here. Â This place is a Hamtramck legend and Suzy is a real Hamtramck booster. Â To the Yelper who complained about the smoke and the 'fetch your own beer at the bar' scenario - all I can say is to her is: "stay home" - more cold beer and good times for the rest of us (and more room). Â This is a real bar that your father would be proud of - - for goodness sake.
Review Source:First and only time visiting Suzy's, I could tell it had great potential BUT
- all the seats at the bar were full, so we ended up at a table. Â im not sure anyone knew or cared whether we were there. Â We even had trouble ordering at the bar. Â
- no one was playing the jukebox, so there wasnt any music playing. Â
- at least 1/2 the people in the bar were smoking. Â i forget how much i hate the smell of a roomful of smoke.
Again, its hard to review on one visit and it was apparent it could probably be really fun, but my 1st impression was less than stellar.
Cozy and small, Suzy's bar is filled with regulars every night. If you aren't a regular, you will feel like one in no time.
The clientele ranges from young hot things you'd expect to see at Birmingham nightclubs, to some of Hamtramck's finest, weathered souls.
Expect warm smiles, cold beers and cheap booze!
