When Szechwan Garden first opened a few years back, they specialized in Northern cuisine. The chili oil doused in everything - spicy enough to clear your sinuses, make your nose run, chug glasses of water, and shat out fire. It wasn't the greatest experience as I was getting over a cold, requesting for tons of napkins just to keep this nose faucet under control. Being health conscious, I don't prefer my food swimming in oil. That was the past.
The interior has been renovated and a beautiful banquet room complete with a crystal ball chandelier has been extended towards the back of the restaurant. For those who want to do a traditional Asian-style wedding, it would be a very nice venue in Indy. It has recently changed owners and they specialize in Cantonese cuisine. I've heard rumors that there is an actual dim sum chef working in the kitchen, so I decided to give it a try with some friends. Being a Sunday - I was a little disappointed that nearly 1/2 of the items I wanted were striked off the picture menu. Is 12:30 considered late for dim-sum where all the good stuff was gone, or was it just too labor intensive for them to prepare that day? Nonetheless, we still ordered decent ha gao (shrimp dumplings), shui mai (shrimp & pork dumplings), steamed mini BBQ pork buns & custard buns, curried squid, pork & vegetable potstickers, beef chow fun, and chicken & salted fish fried rice. Be sure to ask for the chili oil to add a kick to anything. Quality wise - very good for Indy.
Service can be a bit slow as our waitress took our pot of tea and it never returned until we asked. Dishes came out one at a time - so we were finished with one batch before the other came out. At least they were piping hot - nothing worse than cold dim sum. The bill was left at the table, so we didn't know beforehand that you just bring it up to the register to pay. It would have been better if the staff was a bit more coordinated. For a table of 3, they could have made better seating arrangements for us at a booth rather than sit us in front of the door where a blast of cold air comes in every time a huge crowd leaves.
No major complaints here. It's worth it to check out their dim sum if you're not in a hurry.
I went the day after Chinese New Year for a belated celebration with my whole family. Â
Food / service: I liked the dumplings, the rice, and the people. [but spit out the cold sesame noodles and said yuck, and didn't even try the green beans]
Atmosphere: I liked the lights [crystal chandelier! Recessed ceiling with changing colored lights!] and the fountain.
I liked the fish and the crabs [to look at, in the tanks]
And I liked the dance floor where Daddy let me dance to practice for the daddy/daughter dance.
Overall: LOVE it
All of the restaurants I love because they have some food I like
