A very cute restaurant. It is a place I will probably come to for as long as it is open. I have come here several times and each time I have enjoyed it a lot. The wait staff is wonderful as well. The first time I came here I asked for a few recommendations and the wait staff was very helpful! I always love this place and if you haven't been here you need to come in.
Review Source:Tapas Calpé offers a creative tapas menu that is not the same standard items you'll find on many other larger tapas restaurants in the Chicagoland area.  Most are very tasty, balancing flavors and textures - such as Dried Apricots with Iberico Cheese, Walnuts and Honey or a flatbread special with Pulled Pork, Dates, Cheese and a Citrus-Ginger Chutney.  But you'll find some are reasonably priced and some are overpriced, and some portions are really small and others are quite large. Â
They've done a good job transforming the space from a butcher shop into a tapas bar, but we did noticed the absence of music. Â My husband said he could hear it very softly in the background but the rest of us at the table could not even hear it.
All in all, Tapas Calpé provides tasty tapas in a pleasant setting and should definitely be on your list if you enjoy a night out for tapas with friends.
For the location of this restaurant... this is as good as it gets.. it deserves 5 stars!
It's located in a very unassuming meat and wine shop, and at night it turns into a charming and romantic Tapas Bar. I have never had something here that I didn't like. I trust the wait staff and their recommendations and have never been disappointed!
I've had everything from the goat cheese baked in tomato sauce to mixed olive salad. The wine is steal.. they charge retail price for a bottle... not the two and a half times restaurant price..
Be adventurous and get something a little different, the portions are small so you can chose 5 or 6 items!
First visit - mixed feelings. The choices are intriguing, the quality is supreme, but the place is unorganized. My entree (daily special of HUGE shrimp on paella) was lukewarm but hugely flavorful. My son's steak (also a daily special) was barely warm and wasn't served with the asparagus. We had to ask as no one checked back to see how we were after the food was brought. The other 2 dishes were warm tapas and both were good. The wait staff was friendly, but the kitchen just wasn't keeping up. It is pretty noisy so the live music was kind of hard to hear but still was a nice touch. We will go again, maybe during the week they won't be so busy.
Review Source:Great.  Loved the atmosphere and idea of eating in a butcher shop.  Everything I had was very good, the tenderloin was perfect, the smoked salmon was as good as any I've ever had.  Our table had some sausage and olive trays with menchego cheese which was really tasty.  Wait staff  was very nice and knowledgeable about the dishes, we could tell they actually have eaten everything and not just given some general answer to our questions.  The wine selection was great as well and the owner was helpful is guiding us.  Overall it was a very, very nice experience and I hope to be returning soon.  It is a smaller place but I think that it was works in it's favor so you will have to plan accordingly as it got pretty busy and hectic quickly.  Hidden gem.
Review Source:We left seduced. And that's not an easy thing to accomplish with us. Here, like in little bistros in Europe, dinner isn't a meal -- it's an experience. It's an evening of conversation and wine and food. Calpe's well thought-out plates of tapas, balanced in flavors, seasonally prepared, wonderful music all works in concert together to seduce. Plates are big enough for four people, but if you order less it works out well for two too. We'll be back.
Review Source:My boyfriend works very close to Calpe and he's been dying to try it. We finally got our chance this past Friday with his sister. We got there around seven and it was almost to full capacity. There wasn't a hostess, so we just seated ourselves. Our server came around with menus. I did notice that there was what I believed to be the specials written on a chalkboard behind the bar, but it was never brought to our attention by her. Too bad, because it looked good.
We ordered a bottle of rose' and some starters. It was loud enough that we couldn't hear what the other ordered so it was a surprise when the food came. Also, the fact there were screaming toddlers to contribute to the noise level didn't help. I'm not anti-kids, but why people brought toddlers to a tapas restaurant is beyond me.
Our food was good, but I wished it came out at the same time. I ordered the white bean and artichoke dip and that was amazing. The butter for the rolls was fantastic. There was also a frittata which was OK and a fillet that was pretty good. My boyfriend the ham, melon, and cheese tapas which was good, but a bit difficult to share.
When our server came back around, we discovered that no one at our table even ordered the frittata or the fillet! What my boyfriend's sister ordered was a pork tenderloin. We did end up getting the tenderloin-it was delicious-and we weren't charged for the two tapas that we were mistakenly given. Essentially, three tapas plates and two bottles of wine cost us only $75, which wasn't bad at all.
I did like Calpe and will come back again. I just hope they have more help so they can handle a full restaurant.
Went back a few weeks ago. Â And we haven't stopped talking about it since. Â Maybe we just ordered smarter this time...but our bill was dramatically less. Â And the food? Â Better than I remember. Â Everything that hit our table was made with so much love...with such quality ingredients. Â And the wine? Â Still fantastic and super affordable. Â Seriously--I STRONGLY encourage you to go. Â And order whatever's a specialty that day. Â It'll be fresh, it'll be affordable, and it'll be AMAZING.
Review Source:I like the food and wine selection. Â This place is very small and is often crowded. Â Dinner for 2 with wine was $96 without tip and I left hungry. Â The food was very good but I don't want to pay that much and still have to stop and get more food to eat on the way home. Â I'm giving it a 4 star for daring to be different in Cary and for the quality.
Review Source:A real nice find from yelp. Â Boutique tapas restaurant in a wine and butcher shop. Â It's a small menu, but everything we ordered was very good. Â The we had the Spanish ribs, the goat cheese dish and the flat bread. Â All were clearly from scratch and were all excellent. Â The service was great and very friendly.
It's not your typical restaurant, but we really enjoyed it and I would definitely recommend it. Â Very nice change of pace from a regular restaurant.
Calpe Tapas Bar is simply an amazing place. Â I live in Chicago where there are many fine establishments, but more often than not find myself hopping the Metra NW line out to Cary to dine here. Â Nick (owner) is a very nice and warm person and has a grade A knowledge of wine. Â Not only does he know his wine, but he knows the winemakers and regularly has wine dinners with the most sought after vineyard owners from Italy and Australia (very few people do this) in person. Â The chef Steve is world class and features such delights as Spanish Braised Ribs, T-Bones steaks to die for, Pork Tenderloin, Scallops, home made sausages, a cheese selection from heaven, it goes on and on. Â Finally the wine is EXTREMELY well priced try starting at $8 and moving up to $45 for the same bottle that costs you $200 downtown. Â The place is lively, casual and since the owner is also a butcher, features prime cuts of beef. Â You can not go wrong here, for any occassion.
Review Source:Easy.
Hands down the best Restaurant in Cary.
I've been going to Nick's (Orchard Prime Meats) with my parents since I was 2 and it was actually IN AN ORCHARD! I've seen 3 different locations, and this one is by far the bull because of Calpe.
Go here for a full sit down dinner, and ask your server to get you a bottle of 'whatever is good', you won't be sorry.
Or come here for a few nom nom's (tapas) before going out for the evening.
Or better yet, come when the place opens, sit at the bar, order a meat and cheese trey and ask Nick for a glass of whatever wine he is in love with at that moment.
You can't go wrong with any meat or sausage dish here...I think the owner knows a really good butcher... ;)
I REALLY wanted to go to a new Tapas place I had just discovered close to the city...unfortunately, it was snowing heavy in Barrington and my bf and I wanted to stay close to home. We Yelp'd Tapas near Barrington and came up with Calpe. OMG!!! Are we thanking our lucky stars that we went the more adventurous route....This place is simply amazing and is a new favorite. Set in a butchers shop, very neat atmosphere and romantic, we made a reservation which I suggest because it is small and quaint. The service is fantastic and very family atmosphere oriented. $$ was economical- we are savers and were very surprised that the bill was economical..sangria $5, desert, $5. Tapas range from $7-11. Definitely a must try. We loved the ribs ($10), the dates are crazy amazing! Very different! The shrimp melted in our mouths. Have fun! You can dress casual and comfy- I would choose to dine this way 9 out of 10 times! And we like to eat- Â ps. they serve green river- neat.
Review Source:My husband and I went with another couple who love this place and we were NOT disappointed. The service is friendly and warm. The many different tapas are unique and great tasting. The artichoke dip with flat bread was great as were the shrimp and avocado tapas. The menu changes. We will definitely go back. Try a bottle of Carpineto Dogajolo wine while you are there.
