Open late (really late), close to home, fast and.. um fast!!!!
Decent sized place, go in seat yourself. Â As soon as you sit you are given menus and chips&salsa. Â You can literally order and eat and be out of the restaurant in 15minutes. Â Although with all the pickled jalopenos and cauliflower i dont know who'd want to eat so fast without enjoying it! Â The tacos and quesadillas (which are the only things ive tried because its so good i cant try anything else) are so cheap! Boyfriend and i eat till we are STUFFED for less than 15$.
nomnomnom i want to go back now..
This was my first time eating here. It was recommended by my in laws who are Mexican. The menu isn't large but is authentic (i.e. no gordita crunch). I would have given this place a higher rating if the service was a little faster. The waitresses were courteous but it took 15 mins just to order drinks. The restaurant was nearly empty and they were cleaning tables. Also the sangria was in a bottle. For the price it's not bad though.
Review Source:Mmm...more like 2.5 stars. Â The place itself looks pretty decent, they had TVs with spanish channels playing. Â I ordered a burrito, al pastor. Â It was super greasy; I would not recommend it. Â The grease was soaking through the tortilla and dripping out, making it very messy and very difficult to eat. Â I have to say though that they did at least have a good portion of meat in the burrito. Â A decent place to get a quick Mexican fix, but not the best.
Review Source:This is our regular Mexican spot, the food is priced great, and prepared nicely, the restaurant is open, clean, and open late! After going to a few Mexican spots in the area, they are the best. Nice waitstaff and quick service. I haven't tried anything on their menu that I didn't like. All tacos were good, my regular order is the lengua, barbacoa, and once in awhile the steak, I think the only tacos I didn't enjoy were the chicken (only because I prefer mine prepared with the hot, red sauce) and the chorizo I tried once was on the salty side. Their breaded chicken torta is also one of my favorites. This is authentic and not your regular sober-up Mexican food joint. If you want that, Burrito House is a couple doors down.
Review Source:This is the place for QUICK and I mean QUICK service. My family has always had quick, prompt service as there are quite a few waitresses floating about.
Walk in, find a table, get served chips, scan the menu and place the order. Within minutes it will come to you nice and fresh.
Great thing about the place is that they serve beer and that the table is stocked with green and red hot sauce as well as pickled veggies.
We came here for mothers day. We are used to the chain from Chicago. This is the only one in the burbs so its convenient not to drive all the way to Little Village. Although the one in Little Village is better in most aspects.
Upon arrival you can grab your own seat. There are no hosts/hostesses here. Once you sit, a waitress greets you and brings you chips and salsa. The salsa is basic: blended tomatoes, bits of onion and cilantro. I make it at home myself. Plus the chips you can get at any grocery store. I snacked on the carrots and cauliflower that are in the middle of the table. They are not that spicy, just the right kick. We were handed our menus and we ordered a large tray of 20 tacos. I suggest getting this because it comes with a pitcher of Horchata, while if you don't order the tray, the pitcher is an extra $4.50. We ordered half the tacos one way and the rest another way. Probably after 5 minutes the tray came and we ate. The beer here is also expensive. $4.00/4.50 a bottle! They hand you plates to eat your tacos.
I was a bit annoyed because one person in my party did not want onion on their tacos so the waitress said, "Ok, ill just tell them to only put meat on the tortillas and ill bring you a separate plate with cilantro and onion." We got a plate with half onion and half cilantro. I was annoyed because they couldn't put cilantro and onions on the rest of the tacos, only one person did not want onions so they decided to not put any cilantro/onions on any of the tacos. The meat was already on the tortillas when we got them, but we had to put or own onions and cilantro on them. Isn't one of the main ideas behind a restaurant to make your own food, not make it yourself?? Its annoying because I had to keep putting cilantro and onions on every taco. I just wanted to take one and eat it immediately. Ok. The other thing that was annoying was that our waitress NEVER came back to check back up on us at all when we were eating. After we finished eating, we wondered where the waitress went and she was cleaning other tables and moving chairs and such instead of checking back up on us. We had to raise our hand to get her attention and then we had to ask for the bill. So annoying. Terrible service, never checking back up on the customer.
You have to pay at the register, the waitress does not take the payment. I left a very small tip for those reasons. They were handing out a free white pink or red carnation for every mother. The woman purposely kept giving out all the small ones and instead of just grabbing one immediately she poked around for the small ones. Luckily my mother got a fairly decent sized one. There were larger ones there. Oh more thing I forgot to mention...their parking lot is very small. At most around 18 cars can fit in the lot, mind you it gets crowded here weekend all the time so good luck finding a spot. The strip mall next door has private parking but only for strip mall shoppers only. You can take a risk if you want.
Well, this place does have pretty good food which I give them credit for that, but in terms of customer service, it is definitely not the greatest. If you don't care about them checking back up on you then be my guest you will like it here, but if you DO care when they check back up on you then maybe you should come here once in a while like I do, Otherwise the Comales restaurants in little village in chicago are much much better!
If you are looking for inexpensive but decent Mexican food then this is the place to go. Â A few weeks ago my family and I ordered take out. Â It consisted of 2 steak burritos, 3 steak tacos and guacamole and chips. Â The whole total came out to $22. Â
However, you get what you pay for. Â The guac was good, wasn't the best but it wasn't bad either. Â My tacos were covered in grease as were the bottoms of the burritos.
As fast as the food went it, it came right out again. You get what you pay for, heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach!
I called to make sure of Taqueria Los Comales's hours of operation, and was warmly greeted by a kind staff member who did her very best to be helpful, but a persistent  language barrier kept getting in our way. She patiently transferred me to an employee who spoke more fluent English, and though I don't know her real name, it has become "Lovely Lady" in my mind. She graciously answered all my questions about the restaurant, and closed our conversation by letting me know -  (in the sweetest voice imaginable) - she would be, "waiting for me."
When Sam and I arrived, I was both surprised and happy with Taqueria Los Comales's spacious dining area. Our waitress had a great sense of humor, and was very helpful while answering all our menu inquiries. The guacamole was a fresh, delicious, and a generous portion. Their tasty chips an salsa made my hungry tummy smile with contentment. Oh my, don't get me started on the tacos! Warm and flavorful corn tortillas - with the most deliciously seasoned meats I believe I'v ever had in tacos. If you are a horchata fan, you MUST try it at Taqueria Los Comales, as it truly rocked my world.
I can't think of ONE unsatisfactory thing to say about my new favorite mexican restaurant, except for maybe, "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!?!."
Los Comales Bulletpoints:
The best you're going to get out in this area for tacos, hands down. Open late. Beer.
*If you don't plan on copulating after having tacos, do order up the cebollitas, they're delicious roasted spring onions.
*Order your tacos in 3 round bursts, they stay hotter that way.
*Try to pick a table where the curtido (spicy jalapeño, cauliflower, carrot pickles) shows signs of being eaten out of...this will help assure you that it's a good batch, trust me on this one.
If you think about it, it is very tough to get a great assortment of tacos at any one place. In the Chicago area, and I imagine this is true in Mexico as well...places have one or two specialties. Any taco freak in the city that's worth his/her tortillas has a spot for pastor, and another for steak, and so on.
What makes Comales some of the best tacos up north is the fact that this is a true taqueria, and they do well at making 2 bite, super flame quality tacos. Cecina (marinated/cured thin beefsteak) and chorizo tacos are ALWAYS perfect here. Al Pastor is where they lose some stars, this place is a usual contender in the arena of Championship Quality Al Pastor....Often times the Pastor IS good, but these guys are just so damn inconsistent with it.
It is very hard to describe what Al Pastor is supposed to taste/look/smell/feel like..I know it's odd, but when you bump into a good one you'll know it in your bones. Half of the time LC rocks in this category (Al Pastor)and the other half of the time...they're just alright. Oh, chicken tacos are for toddlers, sissys, and little girls...that being said I actually think this place makes a great chicken taco...either grilled or braised, one of the only places I'd even go near a chicken taco.
I can hardly believe the number of good reviews for this place. Because it is near my home, I've been here about 5 times, always thinking I'll give it another chance. Unfortunately, it's always the same: Tough, overcooked meat; tasteless rice; bland over-pureed frijoles; low quality food.
I love Mexican places which are unassuming and plain (which this place is), but usually those places have great food to come back to (which this place does not have). Yes, I like the pickled veggies on the table and the horchata is fairly good. However, one can get much better tacos elsewhere; these are only fair and the al pastor tacos are just not good (I was surprised to read another review praising them). The tortas use bad, dry bread, and always seem to have way too much mayo on them. I've never had a burrito there. The steaks are just bad quality and always overcooked.
Sorry; I just don't understand the high ratings here. And for those who have said this is real Mexican food: You need to get out more to find real Mexican food because this ain't it unless you're looking for real bad Mexican food.
By the way, I know a lot of Mexican joints will have a TV playing, but this place goes to the extreme. There are about 4 televisions usually tuned to a telenovela and/or football, and they keep the volume up pretty high.
The food itself tastes great and is super cheap. I think it's about $1.60/taco and after 2 or 3, you are full. The only downfall about this place is the service. The waitresses are very slow and don't really tend to you when you need them. Other than that, the food quality is delicious and very affordable.
Review Source:I was pretty amazed to experience a good taco joint in Niles, let alone a Los Comales out in Niles with the same good tasting tacos. Â I ordered the al Pastor tacos, which came out piping hot with onions and cilantro...yummy! Â They also put on the table sliced lime wedges to squeeze on those delicious tacos. Â Oh, don't forget to munch on the spicy pickled carrots, cauliflower, or peppers. Â Always liked that veggie offering from Los Comales.
Overall, good food, good prices, good service.
Sometimes I think my family was meant to be Mexican. My parents learned it and like to sit in front of the TV and watch the shows, and my brother could live off of it on a daily basis. I don't think I'd mind having some on a daily basis, either!
Los Comales has a big parking lot to accommodate a lot of people, lots of clean tables inside with tons of TVs playing those shows my parents love to watch without an ounce of comprehension. Each table has green and red sauce (ok I said my family and I should have been Mexican--we aren't so we have our touristy quirks and don't know the names of everything) and a ginormous tub of pickled carrots, cauliflower, and peppers.
Tacos are cheap and tasty, but charge extra for cheese and the steak, while delicious, can be somewhat greasy. Compared to McD's, I'd say it's pretty damn healthy, though. The queso fundido is served on a plastic plate and gets cold really fast. Either learn to eat ridiculously fast or expect a chunk of greasy cheese and chorizo. The horchata is delicious, but they like to give it with half an iceberg.
Waitstaff is nice & fast, but you pay at the counter.
Cheap + clean+ delicious = win! or fat, if you overdo it.
After spending an awful time at the Ford dealership down the street from here we decided to get some Mexican food for dinner.
Again, just recently Los Comales franchise started doing chips and salsa at the beginning and rice and beans with the meals. So we were treated to some chips. Mind you they still have the little container full of picked peppers, cauliflower and carrots so you can snack before hand. Â I ordered my regular 3 tacos de Cecina with a side of cebollitas and peppers. Hmm...that did some serious spirit lifting after the d bags at Ford.
They keep a clean house and the service is attentive. Probably wont go back to the Niles location but I will go  back to Los Comales.
Authentic, reasonable. The other reviews here tell the story. Tasty food, great service. Don't forget to not wait around for your check, just go up and pay your bill.
Other than that, the only thing I have to add to what everyone else wrote is that the experience was somewhat offset by the presence of televisions in all corners of the restaurant, in every line of sight. I sat in front of the only television that was turned off when I arrived, but they didn't get the hint and opted to turn it on. It detracted from the atmosphere.
So glad this is so close to us. Â This is an authentic taqueria, with locations all over the Chicagoland area including Pilsen. Â This place is big, clean and everything here is reasonably priced for what you get. Also included are pickled vegetables on your table to consume at your leisure.
We usually get the tacos with the cilantro and onions on corn tortillas and a large guacamole for a quick and inexpensive meal. Â The suadero, the marinated chicken and the barbacoa are on constant rotation for me. Â They also offer a few different Mexican beers as well as desserts. Â There are breakfast and dinner options as well, and weekend specials which include a shrimp soup and menudo. Â When I gather enough courage, I will try the menudo one day. Â I'm still working on it...
I love how when you sit down at Los Comales, you are greeted by a huge container full of Mexican giardiniera, consisting of spicy carrots, cauliflower, and jalepenos.
I come here and usually order the 3-taco dinner. Â One steak taco, one marinated chicken, and one lengua (oh yeah)! Â ..with a side of rice and beans, lettuce & tomato. The guacamole here is awesome.
They always hook it up with a big bowl of lime wedges, which is a plus. I'm all about squeezing lime juice on my tacos. Â I ask for a side of sour cream, and they bust out this huge bowl of sour cream, it was outta control.
Wash it down with a cerveza, jarritos, or an horchata and call it a night!
F.Y.I.- When you are done eating you just walk up to the front register and pay, you don't wait for the waitress to bring you a bill.
***It's a hop, skip, and a jump away from local bar, Chaser's.***
Was recommended by my DH's cousin-in-law for being super authentic. Â We went on a Saturday night with my DH, his mom and our little one.
We ordered the 20 tacos for $30. Â Two of each. Â They come on a lunch tray. Â We ate 12 of them.. today's dinner will be the remaining 8! Â Great meat options. Â The flank steak and chopped steak was great! Â We ordered the cilantro and onions on the side - I'm not a huge fan of those in excess. Â You can order cheese/tomatoes/lettuce on the side, but we wanted to keep authentic. Â My DH and his mom enjoyed the pitcher of Horchata that comes with the taco tray. Â I got a soda - no refills though.
Although we were there around 8... they are open to 3 AM!! Â
Parent's Note -
Changing Table in Ladies Room. Â Plenty of Highchairs. Â Chips on the table for munching. Â Recommend getting the chopped meat/chicken tacos. Â The meat isn't too spicy and it chopped just the right size for little fingers. Â We didn't order them for her but our 16 month old reached over to the pile of tacos on the table and helped herself!
I'm glad to know that Los Comales maintains great quality throughout the Chicagoland area. Â I was just at this Niles location for lunch with my niece and nephew.....when I closed my eyes as I bit into my taco con cecina (sp?), it was like I was at my local Pilsen LC. Â Muy delicioso! Â And, the server was awesome with my 5YO nephew and 3YO niece. Â Love these tacos in Pilsen, Niles, Joliet...wherever
Review Source:All I have to say about this place is a great food at a very very reasonable price. Â Keep right on driving past the taco bell. This place is well worth the money!!!! Â How can you beat three steak (real steak) taco's for $4.50! Â
Just finished there and I can't wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!!
i'm not gonna say these tacos made me ill. i'm not gonna point fingers like that; but, i will tell you that they lean toward the greasy side and that doesn't always sit so well with me. don't get me wrong though...the tacos were tasty, only $1.50/ea and 3 was plenty to fill me up.
oh yeah, and i almost forgot, they have a little container full of pickled cauliflower, carrots and peppers on the table... perfectly spicy.
As authentic as you can get when almost all the patrons are Mexican families, boxing airs on the TVs, and the Spanish radio station plays in the background. Â It's open late, and breakfast is served all day. What else can you ask for? Â Oh, maybe plenty of parking (in front and in back) and lots of indoor seating? Â Yup, they've got that too.
I've had the fried whole tilapia, 20 tacos platter (comes with a pitcher of beverage - get the horchata!), breakfast (huevos & chorizo), steak burrito, and guacamole. Â Everything hit the spot! Â Also love the squeeze bottles of red salsa and salsa verde and the containers of "Mexican giardiniera" at every table. Â The waitresses are sweet too!
QLC.
Acronym Defined: "Quarter Life Crisis". A QLC hits around the ages of 23-26 and is marked by constant thoughts/worries/questions about what the eff you're doing with your life. Specifically, it begins after the honeymoon phase of your first job after college wears off and you realize that you're stuck staring miserably at your computer screen for 8 full hours a day. In a cubicle with no sunlight, no less. Then, the thoughts of, "What if I majored in Floral Arrangement?" and "Perhaps I can cash out my 401K to travel around Europe for a bit." begin to run rampant in your mind. Sound familiar. If so, you might be undergoing a QLC yourself.
Yes, that is me. Deeply entrenched in my on-going QLC. One of my BFF"s suggested hitting up this restaurant to lift my spirits. Her bro said that the tripe taco was delish, so she was intrigued and wanted to try it out. Â
PERFECT spot, let me tell you. Â Clean and lovely inside, with three huge tv's all around. Â (Looks are deceiving, yo.) Â Prompt and friendly service from the beginning to end. Â Here's the best part: AWESOME food and cheap, cheap, cheap prices. Â Check out our spread:
-Six tacos (tripe, beef tongue, steak, chicken, pastor) for $1.50/each. Â The lengua and tripe were my favs!
-Side of yummy guac for $3.50. Â BIG portion size, too!
-Glass of Modelo for $3.50
-Flan for $2.50
Total? Â $21! Â Whoa. Â For all that food? Â Impressive. Â The delicious food and unbeatable prices totally let me forget about my QLC for a bit. Â And I'm thankful. Â Reminds me there's more to life than a tiny bump in the road.
Cheap. Â Yummy. Â Open Late.
I come here a lot to have their "Desayuno los Comales" / "Los Comales Breakfast." Â It includes steak, eggs, rice, beans, and salad at a reasonable price. Â They have alot of typical Mexican "fast foods." Â
The only reason I didn't give it a 5 is because their menu isn't too diverse. Â I'm Mexican and would like to see more variety and more of the typical Mexican dishes on their menu. Â Alas, it's pretty authentic and yummy and would recommend it.
My family and I came here to eat at 1pm. Sat inside for 5 mins then some lady told us to sit. We chose a table and sat there for atleast 10-15 min with plenty of waiters/waitresses walking by us, looking at us...but nobody came and said anything to us or even give us chips for waiting. They weren't even busy at all. I also over heard this table got their food before they even got drinks. I wouldn't recommend this place if it was the last Mexican place
I called back a few minutes after arriving at Pita Inn, which is delicious and they have a great lunch special ending @ 3, but I asked to speak to the manager. They put this lady on the phone and I was telling her what her crew lacks and she said sorry and that they get busy for their dinner rush...DINNER RUSH. Now I don't know what time they have dinner but this was at 1pm....in Chicago lol. Anyway she offered me free guacamole next time I come in haha. I'll just pass and take my business to eith Garcia's or Taco Burrito King.
It's a triple threat - quick, quality, and cheap! Â Lots of room inside and open late. Â
Remember not to fill up on the chips. Â I tried the barbacoa and grilled chicken tacos, and I would highly recommend the tortas! Â And just a warning that you may or may not get food coma after this meal. Â Mine may have also been a result of having ice cream from the Glenview Dairy Bar after lunch too. Â Hmm...
I'll be back.
Why is everyone giving this place 4 stars??? These were the best tacos I ever had. Maybe that says something about how I'm not cultured in the taco world. Granted, I don't really eat tacos all that much, and I shudder at the thought of something like Taco Bell. But ever since I took my first bite of a small Taquaria soft taco at the Taste of Chicago in 2006, I was in love. I sought out this place specifically and to my delight it was so close to home! The tacos at the restaurant taste even better than at the Taste.
This is just a quickie type of place, slower than fast food but faster than restaurant sit down types. It's similar to Pita Inn except they give you table service. The tacos are soooo good. When I looked around the restaurant, we are always the only non-Mexicans there. That says something right! Authentic taste. Yum! 5 stars all the way!
The best authentic Mexican fast food I have found in Chicago or elswhere. Â If you aren't used to the authentic stuff, you might be scared of some things on the menu. Â This is my favorite though when I want authentic Mexican. Â
Great quick and friendly service whether you are getting take out or dining in.
My favorite items here are the barbacoa tacos, al pastor tacos, pollo abodabo tacos, any of the tortas, and guacamole.
You know, I get tired of walking into Mexican restaurants and seeing no Hispanic people, so when we walked in, my husband and I mentioned that it helps to see that it's not just 'white' people eating there.
The chips were a little on the salty side, but the salsa/pico was pretty tasty. Â My husband loved the peppers, cauliflower and carrots on the table.
Rice was tasty, simple with veggies. Â Beans were very good. Â I ordered a chicken burrito, which was gigantic and absolutely wonderful. Â Husband had a chorizo burrito that was very tasty... but incredibly messy! Â Son had cheese quesidillas and daughter had chicken tacos (which she left none of on the plate).
All in all, very good experience and we will definitely stop in again!
