Wow.  First of all, I've eaten my way through most of the Guy Fieri restaurants in South Carolina during my week here.  I hate the guy, he's a homophobe, and drives me nuts.  It just so happens, however, that many of the restaurants he's been to happen to be some of the best eats in Charleston...or anywhere...

Tattooed Moose is a dive...and a diner...and delicious.  We stopped in for some late night grub and had a great time.  The duck confit sandwich is perhaps one of the best things I have ever eaten.  Unctuous and well seasoned duck between crispy-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside griddled bread, bacon, and a bunch of other delicious stuff.  Just fantastic.

We also had the "Thanksgiving Leftovers" sandwich.  Turkey, stuffing, all wrapped in bread and served with gravy on the side.  Not as good as the duck club, but the gravy was sure fantastic and I can see why this sandwich would be a hit.

Overall, I highly recommend a stop by the Tattooed Moose, despite the fact that Guy Fieri was also there...

Been here twice on the recommendation of a friend who used to live here and this was one of our favorite places in Charleston.

We were able to try three things here:

    (1) Duck Club - this is a MUST HAVE.  I posted a picture and that describes it more than I can in words.  It is simply amazing.

    (2) Wings - during happy hour they are .50 each and they were huge!  Not the best wings ever but I got 8 and was very full.

    (3) Duck fat fries - some of the best fries I've ever eaten.  If you haven't have potatoes fries in duck fat you are missing out on life.  Sorry.

    (4) Lucky #1 sandwich - this is the one with the pork belly and house made kimchee.  It was solid but a but too complex for me.  Its' good but just too many flavors for me.  I wanted to taste the kimchee and the pork belly, but together with a bunch of other things and duck fat fries in the middle...flavor overload.

Overall.  This is a must do if you visit Charleston.  It's close to the airport also so give it a go.

3.5 stars.  Know what to expect before you go and you'll enjoy it.  Dive bar, not in a great area, great food, just OK service.  Don't go there and count calories - it won't work.  We started with the Hand Cut Duck Fat Fries which are truly awesome.  All the sandwiches are great - no bad items here.  I had the Lowcountry Cuban again, excellent.  Nicely priced, but not huge portions either.  Don't think I'll be a regular but would recommend it to someone who's never been.

Say what you will about Guy Fieri and "triple D," but take his recommendation and get yourself to the Tattooed Moose if you are within 50 miles of Charleston. I give the Moose a rare five stars because in the world of dive bars and gastropubs, the Tattooed Moose sets a high bar. Read on to learn why.

Do not be deterred by appearances of the Tattooed Moose or its neighbors. The restaurant is on an unattractive and busy road that parallels the Cooper River west of the Ravenel Bridge. Situated across the street from the Longshoreman's Union hall, it is not scenic Charleston. While the exterior of the Moose is uninspiring, what counts here is the food and service. Both are fantastic.

The crowd when we arrived was young college students, tattooed hipsters (appropriately), blue collar workers, and a few middle aged couples. A wide spectrum. While you may think you will stick out, trust me, you will feel welcome.

To the food. The table split an order of Roasted Garlic & Blue Cheese Fries ($8.50)
topped with blue cheese sauce & a bulb of garlic confit. This is a cardiac surgeon's best friend and too rich for my taste, but a few bites were tasty. This easily feeds 4 - 6. For dinner, my father-in-law and my son had Mike's Famous Duck Club ($13.50), a triple decker filled with house-made duck confit, apple smoked bacon, hickory smoked cheddar, on sweet Hawaiian bread with garlic aioli, lettuce, tomato, & red onion. My mother-in-law and I each had a "Lucky #1" Sub ($8.75): house-made BBQ braised pork belly, seared on the grill, topped with house made kimchi, tomatoes, cucumbers, crispy onions, cilantro, wasabi mayo, & sweet red chili sauce on a toasted roll. We shared halves. Both were featured on Triple D and both EXCEEDED Guy's unbridled praises. Seriously.

The Tattooed Moose has a serious list of beers, including Westbrook White Thai, my new favorite: think Belgian White Ale with lemongrass instead of curacao, and a hint of ginger. Look. You would not go here to wine and dine an important client or to propose to your girlfriend (or whomever), but you must go. It is that good.

In two words, "Duck fat"! Probably not very healthy, but OMG!! Quirky, frequented by locals (with Tats, that's a good sign). Great  beer, great food! Your welcome!

It's a bar that makes some of the best sandwiches you will ever taste.  I had the Duck Club sandwich and I must say that i'm in love.  I also had the duck fat fries with a side of gravy.  I didn't care for the gravy, but the fries are fantastic.  It was so good, and so rich that my friend has banned me from coming back for a month.  She said I will need that amount of time to work off all the duck fat.  It's kinda small and if you go during the lunch rush prepare for a wait.  The upside is that the kitchen is open till 1 am.  A person could do a lot of damage eating that good late at night. I will be anxiously waiting out my ban so that I can  try something else on the menu.  Oh yeah, it's a bar too.

Very good not great, and stuck between a 3 and 4 star.  Certainly a dive, with sharpie artwork all over the wall and tables.  A bar goes along the back of the wall, high and low top tables scattered, and a small patio outside.  As soon as I walk in, I can smell the grease.  They need to clean and change their oil.

Anyway, we showed up pretty much right when they opened for lunch, and were seated right away.  Though the place was full 20 minutes after opening.  Always a good sign for a local dive.  Table service seemed busy, but on top of things for the moment.  Though once the place filled up, the service slowed.  No problem.  The kitchen seems really small, and can not keep up with all the people here.  A couple of the bartenders seemed a little surly.

They are known for their duck club sandwich, and fries made in duck oil.  Which is what I had.  The club sandwich is huge.  I won't need to eat for the rest of the day.  The fries are limp and soggy.  They obviously don't double fry them, or let them dry after soaking in water.

The club is this huge monster of a thing soaked in grease.  Mounds of duck confit, bacon, lettuce, and tomato.  The toast is soaked through with grease, oil, and globs of mayo.  Not to mention the mayo based aoli sauce on the side.  This is a heart attack, and impossible to eat.  The duck is very good, but as a sandwich...arg this is frustrating to eat.

A few local Charleston beers on tap, as well as a few nice offerings in bottles, and cheep macros.  All things to all people on the beer front, and a full bar.  Certainly a place I would like to come back to.  The food is good, if a bit flawed.  Change the oil for crying out loud.  It seems their appearance on Diners, Drive Inns, and Dives has done this place good.  It is basically packed from the get go.  A nice spot, which I will continue to support when I can.  Though, there are some other places I like better in this wonderful town.  I guess that just speaks to the quality of food options here.

OMG, yum. Okay, so maybe this isn't the cleanest, most welcoming place ever, and maybe the scribbles on the wall are a bit tacky and oftentimes inappropriate, but whatever--their food is good.

After reading several reviews, I knew I just HAD to order the duck fat fries and duck club. The duck fat fries were pretty good--hand cut, and there is a slight crisp to some of the pieces. We ordered a side of the duck fat gravy and honestly, it is pretty salty and lifeless, so I would save a couple of bucks and skip that. We ended up just dipping our fries in ketchup instead to add some excitement.

And then....The Duck Club. I am not lying when I say I finished my entire first half without putting it down, not once. It was easily one of the best club sandwiches I have ever enjoyed. I can't exactly point out what makes their duck club so wonderfully awesome, but I didn't have much time to ponder this between my excited bites. The ingredients are fresh, the duck is plentiful, the sauce is just right....oh and the bread is even perfectly soft and delicious without being too soft. For $13 a pop and no side, I thought this was expensive at first but I would gladly eat a hundred more of these.

Oh and my boyfriend had the burger, and he loved that as well. Try the duck club!!!

Wow. As loyal fans of DDD we just had to try the Tattooed Moose. We walked in mid day on a Monday and there was a great lunch crowd and great overall vibe. The place is covered in notes and names from travelers all over. We immediately ordered two local beers (white Thai pale ale) and the Duck club and Cuban sandwich. OMG. The duck club boasts itself to be most possibly the best sandwich you have ever ate. And it was THE best sandwich we ever ate hands down. The Cuban was amazing but the duck club could not be compared to. I don't normally eat duck nor would I ever order it but it was served on soft crispy bread with a mayo aioli and the meat itself was shredded like pulled pork. Magnificent!!. It was a highlight of our trip so much so we recommended it to everyone we met. If you are in or near Charleston you MUST make a lunch stop at the Tattooed Moose or else you really are missing out !

Tattooed Moose is one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston.
My absolute favorite thing at the Moose is the Roasted Garlic and Bleu Cheese fries. The fries at the Moose are hand cut and fried in duck fat, which makes them extra delicious. Then they top those delicious fries with melted blue cheese sauce and a whole bulb of confit garlic. It's decadent, and delicious, but definitely plan on hitting the gym afterward, for like 6 hours or so.
Obviously, you have to get the Duck Club. It's divine. In the words of my friend Josh, "on a scale of 1 to 5, it's a TWENTY FIVE!" Yum, yum, yum. They also serve each of their sandwiches with their house made garlicky dill & spicy sweet green tomato pickles, which are really yummy.
Thanksgiving "Leftovers" Sammy, is probably my second favorite sandwich at the Moose. Fresh sliced turkey breast, cranberry mayo, a whole cup of gravy for dipping.... mmmm so good.
I also recommend the smoked chicken BLT. It's very, very good. Lots of people think chicken salad is a healthy sandwich alternative, but not at the Moose. If you're looking for healthy, you should probably just pick a different restaurant.
They also have a bacon bleu cheese slaw that's super tasty. It had a really creamy consistency (rather than vinegary as you sometimes see), and you could really taste the bleu cheese, which I really liked. It also tasted kind of smoky, like bacon, which we really enjoyed.
The only thing that sucks about the moose is that it gets packed FAST. Good luck finding a seat during peak hours.
Happy Hour! $2 PBR Tallboys. Great deal.

    Delicious. but heavy.

Skip the garlic aoli and get the duck fries with gravy instead (it was the best part of the meal).

The duck club is the way to go but if you aren't ridiculously starving consider splitting the sandwhich with someone as its the heaviest meal you will ever have.

Oh --make sure yours comes with the pickled green tomatoes as well, and sit outside, its quieter.

I'm so lucky to have this place close to work and home! I have never eaten inside but I do take out a lot! Always friendly and fast service and I love their Cuban! I always make sure to get an extra side of their pickled green tomatoes! Delish!!

I've been here a few times, and I am really glad to see a more vegetarian-friendly menu! I got the grilled cheese with tomato and a cup of tomato soup, because I just wasn't in the mood for a portobello mushroom sandwich (the new vegetarian option is to sub in a mushroom for the meat on any of their usual sandwiches.) The grilled cheese was good enough, but the soup was absolutely amazing. It was well seasoned, not too smoky, and the texture was really nice. Perfect for a rainy afternoon.
My parents shared the Duck Club and the Lucky #1 and left the restaurant arguing about whose sandwich was better, which is pretty high praise.
They have a great beer selection here too, and any bar/restaurant with Big Buck Hunter is bound to win me over.

I haven't had a sandwich here that was less than amazing. I've been here about 5 times, and I'll be coming back.
Probably my favorite place in the Charleston area.
If it's your first time, get the duck confit sandwich, you won't be disappointed.

This place was was an amazing surprise. It was the first ever place I ate in Charleston, and damn was it a good one.

We arrived and sat outside on the deck which was covered in shade. It was relaxing and nice, and our order was placed in a timely manner.

The thanksgiving "leftovers" sammy was absolutely delicious. The bread was buttery and had a perfect crunch, the turkey was moist and flavorful, and the gravy was the perfect temperature for dipping.

The super melty grilled cheese also received rave reviews from my group, offering a perfectly crunchy bread with buttery crust and super melty cheese (how fitting!)

The duck fat fries are just as good as everyone says they are! The food could have come out a little bit warmer, but it was overall a good experience.

If you want a good, satisfying sandwich, stop by the tattooed moose.

Went back with friends from out of town and they were very impressed. Burger is to die for, one of the best I've ever had. My wife had the grill cheese with tomatoes and loved it. This place might not have furniture that matches, but you can't match the taste of their menu items anywhere in Charleston.

It's a dive in the best way possible. If I weren't from out of town, I'd be here all the time. Great happy hour specials like $2 fries, 50 cent wings, cheap domestic beer ($2), etc. Ordered the famous duck confit sandwich and I couldn't put it down...it totally lived up to it's name. Server was friendly and had good beer knowledge.

After spending 5 days in Charleston, I asked my bf what his favorite meal was and this was it (duck sandwich). It's not too far from downtown so if you're visiting don't hesitate to make it here at least for happy hour or lunch.

He said: Staff friendly for a dive bar, which this is. Cool decor. Parking seems bad, but you are allowed to park in the ILA lot across the street. Music a touch loud and comes from a hip rock playlist, so you dont know any songs unless you are a hip rocker - I liked it anyhow. Place seems clean enough. Got the duck club with duck fat fries. Restroom only moderately clean: highly graffiti-covered like the rest of the place. Doesn't bother me, but your kids might ask you interesting questions if you send them in.  Food was worth a little more than 4 stars. Duck fat fries well executed, crisp, tasty, properly seasoned. Duck club excellent, meaty, juicy, flavorful, ducky. Had some moose burger, it was very good (not insane good, but very good), cooked perfectly, juicy, flavorful. The homemade pickles were a real treat. Do try the pickled green tomato - it's good!!! Drink refills came regularly - no Coke Zero.  By the way, the place is only a short easy drive off the interstate. Will he back here!

She said: OK...parking was a bit crazy, but the food made it  worth the trouble.  The duck fat fries were yummy! And my burger was very good.  The homemade pickles were really good, too.  I would definitely go back!

Dont make the mistake of coming here and not getting the Duck Club - wow, just wow.  Having lived in Charleston so long Im embarrassed to say this is my first time at the Tattooed Moose but I can guarantee it wont be the last.  The sandwich was amazing and we had a great meal complete with $6 High Life pitchers while sitting on the patio.  One of my friends did have the PB and banana french toast and was not that impressed, "not enough PB flavor" she said.

If youre reading this, stop right now and go enjoy one of the best sandwiches in Charleston.

I've been here a few times for a late lunch so its always been kinda dead, so I've never had to wait for a table or for service.  It's a really divey bar that happens to serve some de-lic-ous pub food.  The atmosphere is reminiscent of someones really cool man-cave basement that has a huge bar.  There are taxidermy animal heads on the wall and a smattering of arcade games.  I prefer to eat outside on their patio if possible.

I'm sorry to say that I've never had the Duck Club and have always defaulted to the Smoked Chicken Salad BLT,  which is no less calorie dense than the Duck Club, I'm sure.  This is no hum-drum sandwich.  I dream about this chicken salad sometimes, no joke.  One time when I was trying to eat healthier I got the Santa Fe Salad, which was surprisingly awesome for a bar.  I always, no matter what, get the duck fat fries with the garlic aioli.  Fried fat and creamy fat = nom arghnom nooommm.  One basket of fries is really enough for two people so be aware of this when ordering.

I've heard they are contemplating opening a second location in a place that really needs it....Jennifer, please, please, please make that North Charleston or Goose Creek... we are dying up here without duck fat fries!

You must get the Duck Club. No exceptions. And a side of duck fries.

    Awesome drink and beer selections.

Featured on Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives."

Parking areas are listed on their website where you can and cannot park.

This location appears to be in a bad area of town, but you wont care about that after eating here. I have no factual info if it is located in a bad area, that is just how my drive appeared on my way from downtown. It certainly is a place where the locals go.

I would go back in a heartbeat. You must stop here while in Charleston.

This is such a great hole-in-the-wall type place. It's a little bar with a relaxed atmosphere with great food and great prices. I went during happy hour and they had Miller High Life in a pint glass for $1.50, wings for 25 cents a piece and their famous duck fries for only $2.00. Those were only a few of the awesome happy hour deals. My boyfriend ordered the famous duck club sandwich and fell in love immediately, the sandwich definitely lives up to the hype. I ordered the chicken salad BLT and it was very tasty. The only critique I had was that the bread was a little too toasted for my taste, but other than that I was very happy about my experience there.

Exceptional bar food. Really fun place with a good beer selection. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table but the pinball machine made the time go by much faster. A must try is the duck sandwich. I literally gained 2 pounds on the scale the next day and it was absolutely worth it.

This place rocks.  Looking for a little "foodie" action in Chucktown? This is your place.  It's small and gets crowded in the evenings so I'd suggest getting here early if you want to sit at a table.  Great beer selection, and well priced with some great happy hour specials.

You must start off with the Pimento cheese.  Horseradish, bacon, pimento cheese....with sausage.  You've got to be kidding me right? Did they read my mind or something?  This stuff is perfection.  A must have.

Duck club is delicious as advertised.  Awesome duck confit on an awesome sandwich.  My only complaint was that it was a little messy and hard to eat....but really, who cares?  Can't wait to try some of their other stuff, but this is just to good to pass up.

Fries.  Oh the duck fat fries...how you disappointed me.  We were working on a 5 star review and you had to ruin it.  First, the fries weren't even good. Stale...they found that perfect middle ground between not being crispy and not being soft.  And it's not a good middle ground to be in.  Second, they had no flavor.  Don't duck fat fries usually have MORE flavor? Not less?  Get this one figured out guys, it's not working.

Overall and awesome place, I'll be back for sure.  But maybe sub my fries for more pimento cheese!

I rate this 5 stars for a dive bar. That means I am looking for good food at a reasonable price. No need to impress me with the decor.

The Tattooed Moose offered more than that. Their food was amazing. I ordered the sandwich with the duck.(Sorry, can't remember the name of it.) It was one of the best sandwiches I ever ate. If we were living in Charleston, my boyfriend and I would be here regularly.

The Yelp mobile app led me here and I'm delighted it did.  If you're looking for a new dive bar experience, you'll find it here.  I travel all over the country on business and I seek out interesting dive bars and I loved this place.

The walls are covered with funky taxidermy with the legendary moose as the centerpiece.  This is definitely a rough-around-the-edges kind of place.  It looks a little beat up in a good way.

When I visited there were half a dozen folks sitting at the bar.  Clearly the drink of choice was shots and beer.  This is one of those places where if the bartender is good, and mine was, you buy her a shot.  If the waitress is within sight, what the hell; buy her a shot also.  Are you starting to get the picture?  This is dive bar drinking at its best.

Many of the reviews rave about the Duck Club and the Duck Fat Fries.  I'm not a duck kind of guy so I passed.  I ordered the Lowcountry Cuban with Roasted Pork, Ham, Swiss, Sweet & Spicy Green Tomato Pickles, and Spicy Brown Mustard pressed on a Buttered Roll.  It cost me $7.75 and tasted fine.  The menu makes it sound like you're getting gastro pub level food and that is a little misleading.  Expect solid bar food but not a gourmet experience.

This is a great place if you just need to have a few drinks and unwind!

Tattooed Moose is a dive bar on the other side of town.  If you are visiting from out of town, you will definitely want to drive there.  I have been here 4 or 5 times and always enjoyed it.

I feel that the famous Duck Club does live up to the hype.  One of my favorite sandwiches ever.  It is dripping in flavor!  The Duck Fat Fries are good but up the ante  by adding the Blue Cheese and garlic.  They actually bring out an entire cooked clove of garlic to season these tasty taters.

I have also tried tried friends sandwiches as I can't resist getting the Duck Club when I go and I would have to say my second favorite so far is the Thanksgiving Sandwich.

Its a dive bar with with exceptional bar food.  When I first went, I had told server that I was told I had to check this place out for the food(early stages before it was all the rage) he was shocked and said "It's so cool that people are recommending us for our foor, we're just a dive bar".  Don't forget that they have a great selection of craft beer.

Only negative is that the service sometimes suffers when it gets busy.  Overall its worth a try.

This place has a great beer list and very welcoming staff.  Three TVs for watching sports (two were on NASCAR, even though it was the first weekend of college football, which says something about where we were), several seats at the bar, and more diner-style tables for dinner, as well as a really nice patio.

The menu makes the food sound better than it is.  Really, the food here is not very good.  But go in with low expectations, and you'll be perfectly satisfied.  We were ravenous, having skipped lunch and me, being pregnant, and my husband, being a guy who's accustomed to eating three square meals a day, found the food to hit the spot.

We split the Santa Fe salad, which had stale tortilla strips on top, but decent roasted black beans and corn on top.  The roasted garlic and avocado dressing was really quite delicious.  The pickled green tomatoes here are good, but seemed a bit out of place on this particular salad.  I opted for grilled cheese plus tomato.  I'm a vegetarian, and it definitely had bacon stuck to the crust.  But I try very hard to be low maintenance at dinners out, so I just peeled off the offending bits and ate the rest.  The cheese was, you know, like Kraft singles, nothing special, but perfectly acceptable when in starving pregnant lady mode.  My husband had a burger, which he said was not spectacular, but certainly filled him up.  If you're crunk already, the quality of the food will not matter a whit, so don't sweat it.

We opted for seasonal brews here---yes, I'm pregnant, and allowed myself one pint a day while on this three-day vacation.  Judge me if you like, but I'll think you're pretty silly; besides, I don't eat McDonald's or anything horrible like that, when most pregnant women do ... surely that's more harmful than a craft beer that has only four all-natural ingredients?---and the selection is pretty excellent.  My husband went with Terrapin Pumpkinfest (soooo good!), which was on tap, and I had my old favorite, Paulaner Oktoberfest Märzen, in a bottle.

I really dig this place.  Not a huge fan of taxidermy in general, but I wasn't offended by the decor.  It's the shtick here, and I embraced it.  And two Bowie songs while I we were here, so huge freaking bonus.  Again, the friendly staff make a huge difference.  We felt perfectly welcome, which goes a long way.  I would definitely go back.

This place definitely had a lot of hype around it so we wanted to check it out for sure. We got there right after 4 so luckily we hit their happy hour which runs mon-fri and actually has some awesome deals. We got some chicken wings and they were pretty awesome.

Maybe I caught them on a bad day but as for the famous duck sandwich I thought it was ok but not the religious experience everyone had described it as. I thought the extra huge piece of bread to make it a club was a bit excessive and that being said, it didn't suck but I wouldn't order it again.

The duck fat fries seemed pretty undercooked because we expected then to be a bit more crispy. We also got the thanksgiving leftovers sandwich which was nothing special along with the gazpacho that lacked any real flavor.

I'd come back for the wings cause they were great and I still really want to try the Lucky #1.
