Sawasdee!! As an employee of Atin and Thai Smile here is my inside scoop :)
Awesome place to grab a bite when you have an hour or so lunch break. Generous portions with a cup of soup coming before your entree at a competitive price. Lunch and dinner prices differ as well as portions. lunch menu runs around 7-8 Bucks. Dinner goes anywhere from 9-15 dollars depending on our weekly special. Dinner also comes with unlimited rice. We have something to match anyone's pallet with our very large menu. If your not sure what to order, ask your server! Explain your likes and dislikes and we can most likely find something you will enjoy. The kitchen feeds each employee every shift we work therefore we have tried the entire menu.. (An awesome perk lol) Everything is made to order meaning if you don't like carrots we won't cook it with carrots in it. Want extra snow peas? No biggie we'll throw an extra handful in.
Nearly all entrees can be made vegan and vegetarian !
The level of spicy is decided by our customers. 0-5 is the scale. Order 5 and not spicy enough for ya? We have a spice tray that can be brought to your table.
Now for everyone who does not believe we are not "authentic" enough we have a new menu for 2013 offering five or six truly exotic/authentic dishes. I won't spill the beans on those you'll have to come in and try them out :D But hey, if basil chicken isn't "authentic" then you've never been to Bangkok.
like they say, "Don't knock it til ya try it." I hope you'll like it :D

I absolutely love the Pineapple Fried Rice, and I always order it with tofu (one time I was given chicken by mistake, and it just wasn't as nice). Â Now, I don't eat tofu a lot, but this has the springy consistency of tofu with just a bit of fried crunch on the outside. Â The dish is, I would say, mildly spicy, but I think the textures are what do it for me: Â the aforementioned dual-textured tofu, crunchy cashews, and the occasional burst of sweetness from a piece of pineapple along with soft jasmine rice and vegetables (peas and carrots, mostly, but a bit of tomato, too). Â Their spring rolls are small but tasty as well. Â Their soup can be a bit on the too sweet side. Â The blue and white dishware makes for a lovely presentation. Â The staff has always been friendly but not in a pushy, cloying sort of way. Â Parking is an issue, and getting in and out of the parking lot can be a challenge. Â Still, one of my favorite places to eat in Muncie.
Review Source:I am definitely a fan of this restaurant. I typically order the pad kee mao level 3 because I love spicy food. The service is exceptional and the portions are huge. I always take leftovers home or split the meal with a friend. The atmosphere is nice but it can seem very crowded at times. My meal usually cost around $10.
Review Source:Ordered crab Rangoon, pineapple fried rice, and 3 flavored chicken.
Crab Rangoon: the smallest I've ever had at an Asian restaurant... Nevertheless, probably among the best I've had. Not overly cream cheesy.
Pineapple fried rice: kind of bland at first (due to the overly salty chicken...) its not bad, I like the curry flavor in it. Every place does it differently, it's not my favorite.. It is at least decent.
3 flavored chicken: ugh... Ordered it cuz the menu says its the most popular dish. I can't tell the 3 flavors, all I taste was sodium. Â Chicken had way too much breading and was soggy from that sodium sauce. We had to throw it away, which breaks my heart.
Overall, it's alright. The pad Thai is pretty ok, but it's weird to have it served with white rice. Carb overload! I don't feel it's as great as how everyone else make it out to be.
From my college days, I was a regular at this place. Fantastic Pad Thai. Huge portions. My wife and I shared one order and had LOTS left over.
After eating at LOTS of Thai joints since then, our recent visit left us a bit less fanatical than we'd previously been. Still, very good place.
New sushi bar is pretty gross. Wouldn't recommend it.
My boyfriend and I always get taken here by his dad when we visit Muncie. I always get the Clear Noodles dish, and I'm never disappointed. Â They will make any dish spiced to your liking according to their number scale. Â Their soup and wontons are delicious as well. Â I don't know much about authentic Thai food, but this place is definitely good. Â The wait staff is efficient and polite, and the place is very clean.
Review Source:My husband and I have been traveling to Muncie, a 30 mile drive, since 2004 (?) and have taken numerous friends along with us over the years. Â I've never seen anyone not fall in love with this little gem.
Things I like:
-The fresh spring roll with 'delicious sauce' is just that - fresh and delicious.
-Panang Curry - yum
-Cashew Chicken - ditto
-Thai iced tea - also very good
-Having fresh sticky rice served to me when my meal arrives.
-The owner is charming and friendly, the wait staff also friendly and well-trained.
-Their beautiful blue and white china.
-THEY NOW HAVE A SUSHI CHEF!!
Things I don't like:
ummm, there isn't enough parking.
I highly recommend this restaurant if you're anywhere near Muncie, Indiana.
Wow, so nice to find a good Thai restaurant in Muncie! Â The Panang Curry is excellent as is the Basil Fish and the Spicy Green Beans. Â Service is always speedy and friendly; we've become regulars here in the few months we've been in Muncie on business.
I'm adding on to this review to say that I've now had the vegetable stir fry with chicken as well and it's fantastic. The server recommended it to me as something new and yummy! Lots of napa, snow peas, crisp carrots and a light flavorful sauce. I tell them to leave out the baby corn, those things are freakish.
I've loved this place before there was a yelp. Â Now they are twice the size of the old restaurant. Â The food is still fantastic, (is it possible for it to of gotten better? Either it has or my vegetarian options are more delicious then my old three flavor chicken standard.) Â Love it Love it! Love it!
FYI they close between lunch and dinner so dont come too late or early.
Always good. Spicy noodle and chix rice are standards. Consistently delish. Â Wait staff is mostly BSU students and speak english. Â When mangos are in season (which isn't very often) you can get this sticky rice and mango dessert (I believe it takes a day to make it) and it will blow you away. Â This is one of Muncie's favorites.
Review Source:The last time I ate here was in Seattle and it was called Thai Tom. Actually, it may have been that place in Ann Arbor, or Indianapolis, or anywhere.
Point being, this place is for tourists, not that tourists actually come to Muncie, but you get the idea. The food is decent at times, but the service was consistently so bad over the years that at this point I think the place should be converted to delivery and pick-up only, at half the price. The last time I went was about a year ago, and we spent our entire meal dealing with some tweaker hippie douchebag trying to rush us out because he didn't understand that restaurants get busy on Friday nights. I usually would eat the Pad Kee Mao, which is good, but good in the sense that General Tso's chicken is good at every Chinese restaurant you've ever been to. It's incredibly formulaic and predictable. As for the Tom Yum soup, it's too sweet by far and tragically unauthentic. A completely uninspired, easy way out for students going on first dates (I've been guilty of this too). Next time, get in your car and drive to Thai Kitchen.
I totally agree with Jennifer. I am not in the position to judge the authenticity of this Thai restaurant - I just know what tastes good. And Thai Smile outshines any other Thai place I've been, authentic or otherwise. The service is always fast, the portions are huge and the prices are good. My recommendations:
-Tom Yum Goong soup: This is a light broth soup with so many flavors, I don't know where to begin. It's spicy and lemongrass-y and tomato-y and mushroom-y and ... oh, it's so good. I want some RIGHT NOW. I always get mine with the shrimp, but you could get it with no meat at all and it would still be delicious. I like to spoon some over the white rice they serve with the entrees.
-Won Ton Soup: The won ton itself is peppery pork-filled goodness, and the broth itself has a slight sweetness to it. I think this might be an acquired taste, especially if you're used to typical bland won ton soup.
-Pineapple Fried Rice: Saffron rice with a hint of cinnamon and tons of vegetables and pineapple? Incredible.
-Pad Thai: No nonsense - just noodles, peanuts and tasty, spicy sauce. I always get mine with a spice level of 3 (you can order from 0 to 5) and it's just enough to have a "twang" but not enough to make you sweat.
As I mentioned, the portions are gigantic, so splitting them might be your best option unless you're really hungry or need leftovers.
My only gripes with this place have nothing to do with the service or the food, but that the parking lot is really weird in relation to the entrance of the restaurant. Oh, and there is absolutely no place to stand while you're waiting for a table (but, thankfully, you usually don't have to wait long). One more thing - they close at 2 for lunch on the weekdays, which is also a little strange and disappointing if you don't know and had your heart set on Thai Smile 2.
Seeing as how I am not Thai and have never been to Thailand, I do not know how traditional/authentic this Thai is, but I love it! Â I have been to many Thai restaurants and every time I try a new one I think "eh, its ok, but Thai Smile is much better." Â The service here is always fast and friendly, and they have a large menu that has something to please everyone. Â My top recommendations are Pad Thai (for those who do not want something spicy) or the Panang Curry (for those who want something with a little kick to it). Â Overall, this is one of my favorite restaurants and I am sad that I no longer live in Muncie and cannot enjoy it anymore.
Review Source:I really like the pad thai, which can easily be made into 2 meals because its so big. I've tasted a few other things that were delicious, such as the coconut soup, spring rolls, and a custard dessert type thing. Everytime I have dined in, the service has been quick and friendly, and the prices are pretty decent. One time, my boyfriend found a fly or gnat or something in his soup, so that was pretty gross. But stuff like that can't be helped sometimes in restaurants, so I'll give them a break. But other than that, its good food!
Review Source:It is not very authentic, but it's edible. Their idea of spicy sure isn't Thai standards! I asked for a five on the spice scale and it was only about a two. If you want some place to eat that isn't the usual crap Munice cuisine, then it's a good place to go. If you want a better Thai place, drive to Indy's Broad Ripple neighborhood to Thai Cafe is worth it.
Review Source:Same as Thai Smile [2]. Â One of Muncie's most popular restaurants, but this is more Chinese and American than anything else. Â I like the large bowls of curry and unlimited rice, but you're buying into a ruse. Â It is what it is (god, I hate that expression), and you probably like it too.
