Ok forget about every other Thai restaurant in the Greater Indianapolis area. FORGET IT. You can't? Ok, we'll get the MIB to mind wipe you.
Thai Spice has a giant menu that I drooled over before I actually got to the restaurant since it had so many items on it. One of the problems I have with Thai food is that I usually don't know what the item is, so I take a while to read the descriptions instead of crying in a corner and ordering Pad Thai.
Started off with the Thom Yum, a must. Excellent price for a small...which actually was a bowl big enough for two to share.
I had the #81 Padd Priew Wann, and it was by far the most strange and wonderful item I've ever had. "Sweet and sour stir fry with grapes, cucumber, onions, carrots,
pineapples, water chestnuts, tomatoes. " Soak that in a second. FRUIT AND VEGETABLES TOGETHER. CHAOS! I highly recommend this item. They let you mix sauces too. I read that they have very spicy hot sauces and have recently been trying to avoid the spice hurts the next morning. Mild and Medium mixed together was perfect, although maybe next time I will try not to be such a wiener.
I cannot wait to go back to Thai Spice and try some of the other items.
I have been to many Thai restaurants and by far, Thai Spice is the best one. There is low turnover in staff, and the food is ALWAYS spectacular. My favorite is the Kao Padd Bi Krao Prow with beef. I know I spelled that wrong, but others must know of its amazing ability to make me wiggle in my seat as I wait for it to be delivered. So yummy! Even the bathrooms are awesome :-) Definitely make a trip down to Greenwood to taste this divine food.
Review Source:Delicious! I usually just stick with boring Pad Thai but it is delicious! One order is enough to feed my husband and I both two meals, so you could easily feed a family of 4 with one order, the helpings are just that enormous! A friend ordered one of the curry dishes and I tried that... it was also quite tasty! Would definitely recommend Thai Spice!!
Review Source:Love this place!!! Absolute best Thai I have had in the US. I Â have tried many dishes here and at their old space. Â I have thoroughly enjoyed them all but the Padd Makur is my absolute favorite. Â Fresh Eggplant in a spicy bean sauce with peppers, onions and fresh basil. Â Divine. Â I tend to lean toward vegetarian dishes as it seems to highlight the fresh and vibrant characteristics of the dishes. Â
I have never disappointed at Thai Spice and highly recommend it to anyone who is not afraid of flavor.
About the only thing bad about Thai Spice is the parking. Â The lot is always full! Â
That should tell you something right there. Â
I've now tried several dished and have throughly enjoyed them all. Â I would say that there is quite a bit of difference between the mild and medium heat and if you are crazy about spice then stick with mild. Â
That said one of the first dishes to try is of course the Padd Thai. Â It is simply wonderful and they give you a large enough portion to easily make 3 or 4 meals of it. Â Though you won't want to share with anyone. Â Their stir fry selection is also nice. Â The Pad Kra Prow in particular is very tasty with great button mushroom and green beans that are cooked well and still crispy. Â I also enjoyed the dumpling appetizer though I may venture out and try something different next time. Â The sweet soy sauce was a nice surprise and was what made that dish a bit unique. Â
All and all Thai Spice is taking the top of my list for best places in Greenwood.
Yelp served me well to locate this gem while visiting Indy for a campus tour of IUPUI in April 2012. I had all but poo-poo'd Thai food from poor experiences so I was going in with no expectations. Tom Yum soup was awesome! I've yet to find anything as richly flavorful. Pad Thai was equally impressive. I'd grown tired of wanting a light noodle dish packed with flavor and a subtle building heat and in turn being served a sweet, sticky clump. Pad was fluffy, stayed hot the whole eating time (I was wolfing it down though) and had a wonderful flavor balance. Decor is a clean "white linen" table cloth Asian restaurant affair with a real funky bathroom fixture. Great value for the money - my 1st stop when I return to Indy!
Review Source:WHAT HAPPENED?!!
First few times we went there, service was AMAZING! Yet lately it's gone downhill. Last two times they didn't add any heat to my food (ordered medium). Waiter hangs out around the register and only came back to our table for the bill, which was our only opportunity to order dessert which he got very wrong. I ordered extra peas in my dish, there were 5 in it. Â My friend had to wait an extra 15 minutes for her food because it was forgotten. Â Fried rice was super greasy.
Food used to be great, now it seems to be slipping.
Same as service.
I cannot review the restaurant itself, but the food my cousin picked up for the game was pretty damn good. Â I had #5 and #33 (no idea what these are called). Â #5 was really good (some sort of wonton), and #33 (chicken/rice-noodle soup) was delicious but a little messy to combine. Â I also tried the fried bananas with honey, which didn't really taste like banana at all, but was good.
Review Source:Thai Spice = Not so nice.
Coming from the true multicultural city that is Houston, I longed for something other than "mall-asian cuisine." My coworker suggested this little Thai Place in Greenwood. I was up for the drive and could really use some decent Thai food.
Upon arrival, the parking lot was full, which is a good sign. We opened the doors and were wafted with the beautiful smells of Thai food. It smelled good. There were 3 women with a baby waiting to be seated, a counter with a woman taking to-go orders to my right, and then the two of us excitingly waiting behind the ladies. It wasn't as full as the parking lot dictated, so I was sure it would not be long before we were enjoying delicious Thai food.
Then, from the back of the restaurant, a man carrying menu's comes to the waiting area and says, "4 plus a baby" and then says it again in a loud voice. Loud enough to overpower the diners nearby who turn to look. The women in front of us tell him, "no it's actually 5 plus a baby." The man, proceeds to throw up his hands in disgust, and as they slap loudly at his side, he says, "well you told me 4, so now I don't know what I'm going to do." I then hear the women apologizing, which shocked me. Are you serious? Are you really going to roll over and take that?? Where is the customer service? The proper response was, "OK great, let me get an extra chair, or find another table." My stomach turned and I wondered how he was going to treat us?!
My husband would not stand for this, says, "Excuse me sir, are you the owner here?" The man is silent, so the question is asked again. No response. The woman who was taking to go orders behind the counter suddenly chimes in. "I am the owner, what's wrong." My husband proceeds to say, "You do not talk to people like that. Did you see how he spoke to these women? We are not going to be eating here. I don't want to eat at a restaurant that treats people this way." AMEN. I'm so glad that he spoke up and said something. I'm so glad all the diners in the vicinity heard and saw everything that happened. I was truly shocked and ready to leave as fast as possible.
As we walk out the door, the owner chasing us down apologizing, begging us to stay and eat. I hope everyone learned something:
1. The owner - train your staff better
2. The man - cheer up man and do the job the best you can, learn how to treat people with respect and learn customer service.
3. The women - stand up for yourselves, and don't let people talk to you like that.
4. Me - I'm glad I married the man I did.
Thai food still evades me here in Indianapolis, but I'd rather be longing for good Thai food, than eat at a restaurant where they treat people like that.
Goluptious food !
Affordable price !
Love the tapioca pudding (with taro and coconut milk), yummy !!!
I will say that thai spice is the most generous  thai restaurant in this city. And the fried rice always taste good. My favorite here is the Kao Padd Bi Kra Prow! Certainly have tried other dishes, they are delicious too.
And also ask a ginger tea every time which is good for women.
I have lived in Indy for a total of 6 days, and I have eaten here 3 times. 'Nuff Said!
My only gripe is that they load down their crab wontons with imitation crabmeat. I hate imitation crab, and every bite was loaded down with chewy, stringy shreds of it.
Get the shrimp summer rolls and pad se ew, and you will not be disappointed!
I was staying in Greenwood for work travels and just as I was resigning myself to the fact that Cheesecake Factory was likely going to be my only option (ew) I stumbled upon Thai Spice...
Yay!
Our table tried the chicken satay and summer rolls which were pretty tasty. Â Then came the duck curry...nom, nom, nom it was fantastic! Â
Be warned: it's friggin hot!! Â
I like spicy, but not crazy so I got medium...and proceeded to drink 5 glasses of water while seriously considering asking for milk. Â Dont worry, I preserved my honor :) but next time I'd ask for mild.
Came back a few times and tried the Kiew Tod and Pad Thai, both of which were sub-par (hence the 3-star average). Â
A little unexpected bonus is the sink in the women's bathroom, it's a beautiful piece of art! Â In fact, I felt unworthy to wash my hands in it. Â Overall this place worth a visit from downtown, and is a hands down great option when stranded in Greenwood.
I came here for a take-out order and I liked the food. #63 Padd Kemau was pretty good, drunken noodles with lots of different veggies (like baby corn, peppers, etc). Â I got their mango with sticky rice, and it was DELICIOUS- they make it REALLY well here, and I will get it again. Â SO good. Â It was just sticky enough and the rice was chewy and warm.
The Thai iced tea was WAY too sweet, I ended up drinking only a third of it.
Being a former server at a very great Thai restaurant, my taste for Thai is very well-rounded.
Each time I've been, I've gotten the Spring Rolls as an appetizer, and the Pad Thai with tofu for my meal. They're both almost perfection! I could probably drink the chile sauce used for the Spring Rolls/Crab Rangoon and possibly eat the Pad Thai for every meal (of course, if there were no threat of getting humongously fat).
The staff all works together to seat guests, refill drinks, deliver food, and handle the check. This ensures that you will always be taken care of.
The decor is authentic, as well as the owners and the kitchen staff.
The price is moderate, but the portion is definitely worth any price. They definitely do not hold back with meal portions, and I love that I always have an extra meal to take home for the lunch the next day.
My only beef with this restaurant is that it's almost 30 minutes away from me, but of course, that's entirely my fault. I should probably move closer so I can get humongously fat from eating here every single day.
This is probably one of, if not THE best Thai restaurants in Indy.
I feel bad for givng a 2 star but this place is way overrated. period.
Coming from Southeast Asia myself, the 2 entrees we had, pineapple fried rice and yellow curry chicken are both sweeter than we expected. Oh and the Thai Iced tea, trust me, you can make them yourself at home. It tasted exactly how I made it, little bitter, which I dislike, that's why I go out and get some.
Like my rating says, I've tasted better? My Thai Cafe (Bloomington) is still the best I had so far. And their Thai Iced tea.
We're lucky in Indy to have some really excellent options for Thai, and Thai Spice is one of the best. I have yet to find a dish here that doesn't meet my expectations, and I've tried a lot... appetizers, soups, salads, curries, noodles, you name it. My favorites here are the curry puffs (curried chicken, potatoes, and onion in a flaky fried pastry dough), spring rolls, the pla goong spicy shrimp salad, and the me ga tee coconut peanut noodles. The menu is extensive, and it's my goal to someday try everything!
The prices are very reasonable, about $10-12 for giant entrees, and the staff are very attentive and friendly. Like someone else mentioned, I recommend starting at "medium" heat and moving up from there if you can handle it. It's also good for groups.
I love Thai food and I don't get it enough. Â Thai Spice did not disappoint! Â
I met a girlfriend here to celebrate her birthday. Â We started with the Kiew Todd (think crab ragoon). Â It was one of the best I've ever had - wontons were completely filled with the cheesey crab goodness.
For dinner my pal had the Padd Thai and I am a sucker for Pineapple Fried Rice  so I got that with pork.  It came out in a pineapple!!!   There was a wide selection of appetizers, side dishes &  salads, stir frys and entrees and I'm excited to try many of them.
The lighting in this place is awesome. Â The chandeliers had these beautiful flowers. Â I saw in other reviews that the bathrooms were interesting but didn't have an opportunity to try them. Â
What would I change? Â The location - it'd be much easier on me if Thai Spice were downtown.
This place must be memorable if I'm back within the month. Â My family was craving Thai so I suggested Thai Spice...yes, they were impressed! Â Everything came out so fast! Â All five of us left stuffed for about $100. Â
Here's what we all shared...and it all gets two thumbs up! Â
- Tod Mun (Appetizer): Â It tasted super fresh and was very tasty. Â
- Laab Beef (Salad)
- Som Thum (Salad): Â Very fresh
- Shrimp Tom Yum (Spicy Lemongrass Soup)
- Pad Kee Mao (Vegetarian)
- Pad Thai (Shrimp) - Perfection! Â Much better than when I had it last. Â
- Green Curry (Beef) - It's definitely hot! Â But it's very addicting. Â The beef was also a perfect protein as it was very tender. Â
P.S. I suggest ordering up to medium if you like heat but still wanna taste your food. Â You can always ask for a side of extra chilies like my parents did to add to their meal.
The staff has changed here, and that makes me kinda sad. Thai Spice used to be a couple doors down, and before they opened Siam Square, Â at least one (if not probably a few) of the latter's employees were at Thai Spice. But hey, they still have the same menus that they've had for probably the last 10 years? The last time I was in was around Halloween, and the owners little daughter was going around from table to table giving away candy. It was awfully cute.
I met a friend for lunch here the other day. She wanted me to pick something "South of Downtown," and I already needed to be in Southern Plaza. Why not go a little further south? Ugh! The Greenwood Park Mall is ridiculous. All the streets around it are ridiculous. And Thai Spice is right across the street. I thought about running some kids over who were walking across the street in my only window of opportunity to make a left turn into the parking lot and had to remind myself of an old fortune cookie that I had once (and still have on my computer): "Patience is a key to joy." Repeat.
I met my friend and her two year old for lunch (he didn't eat Thai, unfortunately). I almost always get the Chicken Kao Pad Bi Gra Pow, but this time, I got Yellow Chicken Curry. Eh. The Yellow Curry was not my favorite. I won't be sticking with that.
I used to come to Thai Spice pretty often. While it's not the first place I had Thai, it's like my Thai home- My Thaimometer. I tend to compare other places to Thai Spice when I try them.
There is no Thai like Thai Spice. All others try to emulate, but none succeed. There can only be one. I live downtown and will gladly drive to Greenwood for Thai Spice any time of the day. Any time. Always a special that is delicious and too much to eat in one sitting. I usually go for hot, not Thai hot, at least not yet, I'm working up to that. The ginger tea is the best I have ever had, spicy sweet and delicious. The bathroom sinks are something to behold. Even if you don't' have to go, just go. I don't understand how or why they are located in Greenwood. Makes me a bit jealous really. I think when you enter into Greenwood they should have a little green sign that says
Greenwood
population 36037
Mark Myers Mayor
Home of Thai Spice
I've eaten here several times and I'm always happy with the experience. The new building is so much nicer than the old one (which is just behind the new one) and I've never been to a place with a prettier bathroom. The sink in the women's restroom is a work of art.
The food is really good. REALLY good. I love the Padd Thai and I've had it with chicken and with shrimp. I've had other things on the menu but I always seem to gravitate back to that. The portions are generous, I usually have enough left over for lunch the next day and it reheats well. (The shrimp not so much, but that's to be expected with seafood in general I think.)
They have 5 levels of heat here: Mild, Medium, Hot, Extra Hot, or Thai Hot. I'm a heat lover, I put jalapenos and rooster hot sauce on everything. However I know when I'm out of my league and anything hotter than 'hot' here is too much for me and sometimes I just play it safe and order my dish 'medium'. I want to be able to taste my food and enjoy it, not destroy my taste-buds. FYI, if you order something 'hot' or hotter they state on the menu that they won't issue a refund.
The kids menu is pretty limited, fried rice or chicken fingers, so if you have picky eaters it's probably best to leave them at home. The service can be hit or miss, but it seems to be more an issue with under-staffing rather than inattentiveness.
Wow. Definitely did not expect to find this caliber of Thai food in an Indianapolis suburb across the street from a mall. Definitely know what they're doing with the flavors. Portions are large, prices are a little over what you'd find in most Thai places but the ambiance is nice enough to be a place you could take a date if you wanted. Has that upscale Thai look to it without sacrificing on the food quality.
Friendly staff though check-up's are a bit slow. Full meal for one person took at least 45+ minutes to an hour. Wasn't that busy, but it seems that the to-go orders really trip up the flow of the employees. Maybe peak dinner time isn't the best time to visit if you're looking for stellar table (or bar) service.
Holy Thai food, Batman!
I would drive to Greenwood specifically to eat here. Â I cannot say that about many places in Greenwood, as it seems to be overrun with chains. Â Thai Spice is a huge exception. Â This restaurant is family owned, and you see all members of the family here (including the owner's very cute little girl). Â That said, this place is also very elegant, and somewhere I would feel comfortable in either jeans or all dressed up for a date. Â I have been here twice now, and have found that the staff all work as a team - one person may take your order, someone else may bring it, someone else may ask if you if everything is ok, and everyone is on top of filling water glasses (very important if you get hot food!). Â When we were here earlier this week, we ordered:
- Tofu Tod - cubes of perfectly fried tofu served with a delicious peanut sauce. Â
- Laad Nar - big fat noodles served with a veggies (broccoli, bok choy, and I can't remember what else) swimming in an amazing brown sauce
- Padd Woon Sen - bean thread noodles (read - tasty skinny mini noodles) stir fried with veggies (mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, onions, etc)
It was a tie which of the entrees was my favorite. Â There was also enough that my husband and I were able to both take leftovers for lunch the next day. Â We ordered both of our entrees "hot", but I think next time we will go for "extra hot". Â The first time we ordered medium, and that was not nearly enough for us - though we really enjoy hot food.
In summary, I wish we had a Thai place like this closer to the east side or at least downtown! Â Until then, I'll continue heading down to Greenwood for some of the best Thai I've ever had.
P.S. Check out the cool sink in the bathroom!
Best. Thai. Ever. Â Well, not ever, but in Indy. Â While it's practically located in Kentucky (south of 465), I will make the journey anytime in order to go to Thai Spice. Â Â The service is great and the food is even better! Â In any one sitting, expect to have each of the waitresses bring you or offer to bring you something. Â I've ordered something different each time and haven't been disappointed. Â For appetiziers, I like the Summer Rolls and Dumplings. Â The Kao Padd Bi Kra Prow is great for a main course. Just writing this review has already gotten me wanting to go for lunch.
Order Thai Hot. Â And just for fun (and to entertain your server), don't say the number - try pronouncing the dish.
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the city. Although it is on the South side, it is worth the trip. I do not know anyone that has had a bad meal there. I always wanna try something different, but always end up ordering the Laad Nar--Thai Hot. The Tom Yum soup is probably the best around.
If you are a seafood lover, they do not disappoint. The serve the whole fish with the head and everything, not particularly my thing, but I hear it is amazing. They also have pretty good lunch specials. The service is usually pretty good, but the food is delicious.
I have been searching for "my" Thai place in town, and Thai Spice is now a candidate. I've read the rave reviews here and zipped down to the Southside and gave it the old luncheon shot. The test? Pad thai, natch.
Even before I ordered they brought out the soup and spring roll. The soup is the best "side soup" I've ever had a Thai restaurant: great lemongrass scent, good flavor. The spring was was excellent.
The pad thai was nummy. Rich flavor, noodles cooked well. Not too sweet or goopy. Some fermented soybeans in there for a good flavor. And not too salty, either (important!). Just a really nice job. Portion could have been a wee bit bigger (a complaint I often have with Thai joints).
The ambiance is nice and quiet. The service was perfect.
I plan to go back and try more stuff, and the rating could increase from there (hopefully not decrease).
The owners are some of the most awesome, kind and sweet folks there are! The food, likewise, never, ever had anything that was not absolutely perfect. Service, it is everything I could ask for, and the prices are very reasonable. Â The only place in the Midwest that I have been that compares in Thai food quality is Thai House in Columbia, MO.
YES, it's that freakin good!
Live in Greenwood and feeling like Thai food? Head to Thai Spice. Live in Carmel and feeling like Thai food? Head to Thai Spice. Live in Avon and......you get the point.
As the kids would say, this place is the bees knees. A table full of vegetarians was able to each choose a delicious meal. We all went with the medium spice as we needed a starting point to measure how spice is done here. Medium is pretty do-able, but I will probably try Hot next time.
The service was pretty good and the atmosphere was nice. I didn't see it, but apparently the bathroom faucet is quite the spectacle.
The portions were large enough that I was able to enjoy it for a second time the next day at lunch via leftovers. It will be hard to go try other Thai places since I'll just want to go back to Thai Spice.
I was really surprised with Thai Spice. This place is great! Probably the best Thai in Indianapolis. The service can be so-so when they are busy and most of the waitresses speak broken english to begin with, but the food! Oh, the food is great! Started off with the vegetarian lemon grass soup (super spicy but super good after you get into it), then some spring rolls (freshly made), on to the entree of my fried salmon with sweet and sour sauce (AMAZING - People kill for less), and finished it off with fried bananas and mango ice cream (rich and pleasant finish). Needless to say I left this place super satisfied.
BTW- Check out their bathrooms. Their sinks are awesome!
I once got in an argument with a guy at a downtown bar about the best Thai place in the area. Â He was new to Indy and he was very certain that the one Thai restaurant he had tried in the city was the best. Â He was wrong--he hadn't been to this place. Â
So far, the list of Thai restaurants in Indianapolis that I have tried is short, as I have only been to four, but having been to numerous Thai restaurants in the US and Thailand, I felt certain the first time I went to Thai Spice that I was enjoying some of the best Thai of my life. Â Luckily, I have a friend who lived in Thailand for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer who has tested out almost every Thai restaurant in Indy; she confirmed my suspicion that Thai Spice is indeed the best in the Indianapolis-area. Â
Both times I have been here, I was with a group of adventurous friends who enjoy sharing dishes. Â I hardly know the name of everything I have tried in this place, as I've had so many different things. Â Every single thing I've had (that wasn't too spicy for me to eat) was absolutely delicious. Â For example, I don't like fried rice...except at Thai Spice where the pineapple fried rice is amazing. Â The som thum, thom yum, padd thai, and red curry were all spectacular, as were the other unknown dishes that were passed to me to sample.
I plan to drive down to this place as often as possible. Â I've already made the trip to Greenwood from Broad Ripple solely for Thai. Â I'm just that crazy for Thai.
I love the wood paneling and gaudy chandeliers at this Greenwood Thai joint! Very atmospheric. The service was impeccable and the dishes were solid. The steamed tofu spring rolls made me very happy. (Why do so few places seem to serve these in Indy?)
Everyone in Thai Spice seemed to be having a great time -- I have a feeling this place does a steady business. Was it as good as Siam Square? No. But it was an acceptable alternative on a weekend night.
I'd heard the rave reviews of Thai Spice so my expectations were high. Â Tonight I checked it out with a big group of friends.
Bottom line: I like Siam Square a lot more.
The decor/ambiance is nothing special. Â Siam Square is more contemporary and has more style.
I had a summer roll and a spring roll which were both pretty good.
But they don't have coconut juice, and my panang curry was way too oily, and there was something slightly off in the flavor.
It's possible that I caught them on an off-night, or that they just don't do big groups well.
My wife and I have a new favorite Thai restaurant in Indy. Â This place is great and the prices are reasonable. Â Please note that in mid-June 2010 they are moving to a new location about 100 yards WEST of where they are now.
We try something different whenever we go, but we have 2 things we always get. Â The Thai Iced Tea and the combination Thai Fried Rice. Â You can't go wrong with whatever you order here. Â Everything we ordered was full of flavor. Â They ask you what spice level you want and I usually tone it down to mild even though I love spice. Â
Great place, only one hot waitress but they are all helpful. Â They do seem a little frazzled when the place is packed, but they try.
god this is SO GOOD. Â And totally vegan friendly, if you ask for your dish without eggs or fish sauce. Â I REPEAT, ASK FOR NO FISH SAUCE. Â One time I only said "vegetarian" and my pad thai totally had little shrimps or something in it. Â
One bad thing about Thai Spice is that there is a Pipe store in the same strip mall and sometimes it reeks of stale cigar smoke. Â Not the restaurant's fault, but it is a little gross. Â Otherwise this place is perfect!
