I am assuming that this is the go to for those who do not enjoy Filling Station Pub and or Callaghan being too busy. I don't like Filling Station and whenever Callaghan isn't open, that's where I am going to go.

They have two pool tables that requires a dollar bill or quarters. Most regulars hold the table but if you are patient, you will be able to play. The bar seating area isn't that big and is always crowded during the weekends.

For the few times, I've been there, I've found a guy sitting at the bar with an oxygen tank next to him, doing tequila shots, a drunk customer trying to hit on the bartender who was busy trying to tell him off by pretending to like girls only, a guy helping a girl learn german(the obvious cuss words on a first lesson), etc... This is a perfect place to people watch.

Men, careful with the restroom. The sink is right where the door is. You'd most likely get hit hard if someone drunk enough opened the door without reading the sign about opening the door slowly.

Parking is plenty right in front of the bar where you will usually find people smoking. I have noticed cops sitting on the other side of the parking lot and pulling people over once they drive off the bar premises. Be safe.

One of my favorite places. Good drink, GREAT service. The secret not everyone knows about is that the food is so good. All items can be ordered "Tom Cat" style which means seasoned with spices, jalepenos, and grilled green onions. You can get crinkle fries that way, and the best are their wings.
The prices are good too. Craft beer fans will find a limited tap selection but they usually have BP Sculpin and Yellow Tail available.
Service here is awesome. Come twice and the staff will recognize you and remember what you like. Many regulars that are friendly. Don't let appearances fool you. This place is a great neighborhood bar.

Good bar food.  Ordered: the spicy chicken wings - really good, full of flavor, the fried mushrooms - comparable to dave & buster's and batter was great but it leaves you with a greasy feeling after, and the frisco melt - not enough cheese to make it a melt but it was ok.  served with crinkle cut fries.

If you think about a hole-in-the-wall dive bar, here it is... Tom Cats Bar and Grill.  But let me rephrase that... a hole-in-the-wall dive bar with great people, awesome bartenders, and good eats.

This is not your ordinary neighborhood bar... they have an eclectic mix of customers that makes the atmosphere great and very welcoming to newbies.  Come a few times, and you'll become a regular very quickly.  The drinks are cheap!  A pitcher of the premium stuff like my favorite Newcastle on tap usually runs you $10.50 with well shots averaging $3... and this isn't happy hours... this is all the time!  The bartenders are awesome, and they pour heavy... and there are a few cuties serving you from behind the counter.  I give the food 4 stars merely for the health aspect of it.  If it's your night on the town, and you want deep fried goodness, you can't go wrong with the mozzarella sticks or fish and chips... but if you want wings with your adult beverage, the Tom Cat Wings (their version of salt and pepper wings) is the way to go.  They have daily dinner specials from steaks to mussels on the half shell, and I was never disappointed... but let's face it... drinks and deep fried anything from this place will make you smile.

This is my 2nd review, and yes I maybe biased with this place... but I give it 5 stars.  Come on down, drink well, eat good, and make some new friends.

I have been to Tom Cats quite a few times and have never had a bad experience.  The service has always been expedient and friendly.  Food is tasty and fresh.  LOVE their Tom Cat style chicken strips!!! I usually see the same bartenders (Tory and Sarah) and they both are the main reason I continue to come back over and over again...besides the chicken strips ;)

If you are looking for a great happy hour place or a quick meal, delicious libation and a friendly face I would definitely give this bar a try.

I call it a Dive Bar but it really isn't that bad, just dark. Cheap drinks are good. Service is great, they really take care of you (thank you Sarah!) and remember you if you come in more than a couple of times. And the food is GREAT by any standards. They are always changing their daily specials and I have never had one I didn't like and you can't beat the prices. Of course the Tom Cat wings are the best. If you don't like them spicy then ask for lite red chili pepper or no pepper. However, the Tom Cat wings do not travel well and don't taste half as good if you do take out so be sure to sit down and eat them there. It is worth it!!!

One of the dive bars in the Mira Mesa area. It has the hallmarks of a dive bar - cheap drinks and colorful people without it being TOO seedy, which is not bad for someone who currently works far from where she lives. Two of my coworkers go here quite regularly and are immediately greeted by the other regulars.

    1. The regulars are actually quite friendly. People were very quick to introduce themselves and this was before my coworkers showed up. If you're looking for that someone, I hope you're at least 35+. Saw only a handful of people that looked my age and one of them was my coworker (mid 20's).

    2. Service is down-to-earth, none of the pretentious bullshit you'll see in Gaslamp/PB bars. It did take a while to flag a server for food, but it was super busy that time as the NCAA basketball playoffs were airing and SDSU was playing.

    3. CHEAP DRINKS - last time I checked, $10 beer pitchers and an actual cocktail drink special that was less than $5. Tried the whipped cream vodka with pineapple juice, their version of an alcoholic Creamsicle. Very impressed. Also liked the Blue Moon pitcher as it had hints of actual orange. As a dive bar, I didn't see much of a selection of beers on tap that I would actually drink. To make it clear: I'd rather be caught dead than drink the shit that is Bud/Miller/Coors or their lite variants.

    4. Free wings - really good for free wings, which lasts until 6pm. As someone mentioned the wings are more of a dry rub than coated with sauce, similar to salted pepper chicken wings. One of the regulars told me that those free wings aren't really wings as they were free, but if you order wings what you get are actually wings. Hmm... then again I shouldn't be complaining too much about free shit.

    5. The fish and chips are okay. Seemed like they were frozen before than heated up, but still good for $7.99 and comes with fries. But who goes here just for the food?
[UPDATE 4/19/2013: The onion rings are quite tasty. The batter is crunchy and sprinkled with cheese on top]

    6. A jukebox that plays quite a variety of music.

Now that I have been here I can say that the Tom Cat is a bar that I can wind down with my coworkers after a week without having to worry about trivial things like getting ready.

It's a dive bar. Key words: DIVE BAR. Of course the crowd can be a little strange on some nights. I've never been to any dive bar that had "normal people". Then that would no longer make it divey. Plus, strange crowds make for amazing people watching! What's wrong with that equation?

Everything a dive bar should be: friendly regulars, cheap, strong drinks, and amicable, no-nonsense bartenders. People that come in here are straight shooters. Pool tables, darts, and a number of other games.

Food. Now let's focus on that for a little. For the price you pay, food does not get any better! And yes, their Tom Cat Wings are the SHIT. They aren't saucy, more like a dry rub (or they just get fried and no sauce gets put on them). But if that's not your cup of tea, they do have the regular Buffalo wings and yes, they are saucy. And their steaks are pretty good too. Like I mentioned earlier, for the price you pay, food does not get any better. Some people seem to have a hoity toity sense of entitlement when it comes to food. It's not like you're going to Ruth's Cris or Donovan's. And you must never have been to a third world country either. I'm pretty sure no one ever died from having a "fly" in your fries before.

But honestly, if you are ever in the neighborhood for some reason and want to check out a dive bar, come by the 'Cat! At least you know it'll be an interesting night!

Not really sure why there's this big rave over the Tom Cat Wings. I was craving some wings, and I don't like Wings n Things so I gave this bar a shot. Called in for a take-out order, and they were going to be ready in 15 minutes. Great.

Yeah, they're fried and come with some cooked green onions and jalapenos. But they're just alright. Maybe I hyped them up too much from reading all the reviews. Or maybe I just prefer saucy wings. Maybe. I don't know.

Either way, I can see why people might think this place is shady. It's a dark bar with characters. But it has an awesome jukebox. And a great waitress. It's a nice place to wind down after a work day. Or a non-work day. The waitress is real and down to earth. Lots of regulars here.

Kind of confused about all the raves on their happy hour, the burritos they have for free are not that good, just alright, but I guess for free can't expect much more. Beer wasn't that good a deal, can find plenty of other places for cheaper. There was a fly in our fries. Wings were the best "naked" wings I've ever had. Definitely recommend those to anyone who goes.
And last note, went in with my girlfriend and we were only people under the age of 50. The guy to girl ratio was probably about a 10 to 1.

I'm only giving this place a 4, because the crowd can be a little bit weird some nights, and we don't always end up staying very long after we get our late night fixes of their food.

Keeping this review short and sweet:
Their Tom Cat wings .. holy shit.
and last time I came here, it wasn't on the menu, so ask them to make you some Tom Cat fries..also holy shit.

Best wings ever. I don't even know how to describe them. They're not hot wings or buffalo wings (since usually when people think of wings, they think of those ) but they're seasoned to perfection, delicious, spicy enough to have a kick. Holy shit. So good. The fries are just fries, seasoned the same way as the wings, so getting both would be an overkill.. but both are just as equally delicious. Screw it, get both :)

The bartenders and waiters are always friendly, and the food is always on point.
But go before 12! Because that's when the kitchen closes.

    My kind of place

I came here for the first time in about 12-13 years a few weeks back. And it hasn't changed a bit. They still pour strong drinks, they are still really cheap and there are still drunk old barfly's falling over themselves. Like I said, my kind of place.

If you like classy, look somewhere else. If you like a good jukebox, $10 pitchers of Yellow Tail, pool and free "food" at happy hour, this is your place. Personally I avoided the food since it looked like it was made sometime in the mid-1990s. The people who are in this place are cool in dive-bar kind of way. Not people you would ever go to dinner with, but you'll talk to them for 3 hours at the bar.

My co-workers loved it so much, we moved our regular happy hours over here, despite the fact that we work in Poway.

Known about this place for years, but only recently checked this place out. My friends come here all the time and it reminds me of Cheers.  From the staff to the patrons, this little dive is what I miss about California. I only had drinks and didn't pay so couldn't tell you if it was pricey. All I have to say is if you come to shoot pool, then you better win. King of the hill when it comes to pool here. You lose, then prepare to wait about 30 minutes to play again. The frequents or locals here treat you like you're just part of the group. This place is a can't miss for me next time I'm back home in San Diego.

Known for their wings and didn't try it. I will soon.

Pretty chill sports bar in Mira Mesa.  Surprisingly tasty food and great prices.  Great place to watch and cheer on your favorite sports teams on their many tvs.

They have cheap and strong drinks (not like the $10 watered down drinks at many places these days), pool tables, a refreshingly diverse crowd, and lots of parking.  Come early for amazing breakfast specials, and they have fun drink and shot specials when the Chargers score TDs to make it an even more fun atmosphere.

    I LOVE TOMCATS!!!

I am a local to the area & to this bar. From what my uncles tell me this place has been here since the early 80's... So to those of you who got lost on the way/wonder about the location/why its old inside, its because IT IS OLD. If you couldn't tell from the outside, I don't know how you found your way here or why you came in.

If you are looking to be ripped off on expensive watered-down drinks in a 100%commercial and "trendy" environment complete with robot servers who would rather text than serve you, please drive down the street to On the Border or Islands; this is not the place for you.

Tomcats is personal, the complete opposite of those types of places, has a staple set of regulars (mostly older, very friendly & have been regulars for years) who are everyday people, the atmosphere is comfortable and thats why we love it.

This is a typical neighborhood spot/dive bar with down to earth and friendly staff who treat you like they know you; ask them anything. When undecided, I've asked and based on what I was in the mood for, Steve & Shannon have invented drinks for us on the spot! Drinks are cheap & strong; I'm a martini girl so that's important! It is a smaller place, seating can be limited on random busy nights; plenty of parking though. The crowd is mixed; ages and races, which is why I love it personally. I've been there on nights and heard everything between Led Zepplin and Pit Bull being requested on the juke box. there are 2 pool tables, flat screen tv's (one where you can play the wii), dart board, a few old school pin ball games & a lotto machine... lol.

The signature wings are the TOM CAT WINGS. Not the spicy, not the mild... Some of these reviews are killin me when yall didn't even try the right ones or any wings at all! These wings rival the wings at Royal Mandarin in national city; they are crispy, salt-n-peppery, super-hot & fresh when served and come sprinkled with cooked green onions (chopped in 2-3 inch sections) & jalapeno slices. I seriously crave these wings; eat them when I'm there and order them to take out when I can't hang out.

If you thought people in the area were sketchy, you must not be familiar with the communities in San Diego. This is Mira Mesa... Its not City Heights nor is it Rancho Bernardo, and we are all grown-ups here. The location is well lit outside, I have yet to see police even circling through this area on a busy Friday night, AND its next to a liquor store. It is RARE that there is any type of drama at this bar, and usually when there is the people involved are 25 or younger (surprise surprise).

I'm 31, still party, but am over the hassle of having to drive far and get dressed like I'm going to a club just to enjoy a few drinks and conversation with my co-workers or sister/brothers/cousins to shake my work-week off. If I end up living in San Diego and this neighborhood forever, I'll probably end up being one of those older, friendly, weekend regulars. I'm already kind of committed ;)

This is a Mira Mesa local dive bar so expect typical Mira Mesa locals!

They have a very chill atmosphere, good for just hanging out.

Drinks are reasonably priced, and food... the food here is just surprisingly amazing. I've never had such delicious chicken fingers.

I am beginning to sense a pattern, either I need new friends or new hangouts.  I haven't gone to a place to rave about since forever and this is not one of them.

Its a normal neighborhood bar if your bar is situated next to the Big Lots and populated by all kinds of people.  We went here post "The Thing" movie and a brewski.  Food is ordinary, they have some hot wings that is supposed to be their specialty but not in the mood for it.

Space is pretty tight, small tables and need to be put together if you are a group (more chairs than tables).  They have a couple of pool tables (thinking a tournament was afoot).  A sponsored team was celebrating a teammate's birthday.

Overall, average A-OK if you are looking for something that is not full of kids crying or running around to have your beer.  Did I mention this is in a strip mall.  Even with directions from my phone, it was easy to miss.

I felt like I was being transported to Ramona upon entering this fine establishment. Service was speedy, drinks were stiff, the bathrooms smelt like a litter box, and there was plenty of seating.
I don't know that I'd be back to the Tom Cat Bar & Grill but I will say that if I had never ventured over to this place I would of never discovered whip cream vodka.

    This place is awesome. Came here for the first time with some coworkers at around 11 pm on a Friday night and I can say I'm definetly a fan. Based on the location, I didn't expect much of it at first.  It's tucked away in the same plaza as a Lucky Seafood, Big Lots and Jack in the Box. But after my first visit, I will be returning here in the near future. Casual atmosphere, with great staff and CHEAP drinks! They're not sheisty either! They also have some TV's, arcade games and pool tables for further entertainment. Came here on a Friday night, so lines for a drink were a bit long, but worth the wait for those prices, i'd say (;

Come here a Friday night, people! They have free wings from 4-8 pm

I thought I would never enter a dive bar in my life. And probably wouldn't have until my ice hockey team dragged me here. Boy am I glad they did. The food is awesome, the prices are right, and there is just enough lighting to know the girl across the bar isnt a man.

I'm also glad the place is a dice that doesn't have the smell of six month old honey nut cheerio vomit or the birth of a child in the back room.

Great local joint with friendly staff.

I'm a big fan of dive bars and this place fits that category. The crowd at this place is very laid back and the bartenders are awesome. The drinks are stiff and the beers are cheap. This dimly lit joint has a jukebox, multiple tables, and a few pool tables. Have come here on multiple occastions after playing softball and this place is great for groups. They have a few tvs and awesome drink specials.

i would really recommend this place if you are in the neighborhood with friends and looking for a place to put down some libations. I would especially recommend this place if you live within walking distance and are looking to meet some cool people.

I had the pleasure of attending the Movie and Brewskie event with a friend to see "Limitless," yes, it pays to yelp!! Anyhow, the after party carried over to Tom Cat Bar & Grill.

I am a fan of dive bars, this place definitely falls under that category and I liked it. I get there, order a Jack and Coke, wow was it strong! It was more like Jack and a splash of Coke, which is a great thing! So Tom Cat's already wins in my book for stiff drinks.

I jumped at the chance to play some pool, they have a couple of tables. The thing I liked about the set up is that there is a board to put your name up to play. Basically, you win the table, you stay to play. That's how it should be, most places just have you rent them, and they can be occupied for hours! Another win.

Lastly, Donna was the lovely bartender of the night. Another patron was bashing Blue Moon, saying it was not a real beer. She quickly corrected the guy about the awesomeness that is Blue Moon, haha. That's one of my favorite brews, so kudos to Donna. Cool atmosphere, throw some tunes on the Juke Box, and order some good appetizers too.

When I hear the word Tom Cat I think of Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes, but that's just because my wife reads a lot of gossip mags. "TomKat" is their celebrity couple name (portmanteau).

Alas, there was no TomKat celebrity appearance at the bar and grill, just a bunch of Yelpers talking about some movie I've never seen named "Limitless".

The Tom Cat Bar & Grill was a good size, is close proximity to the freeway and has 7 flat screen TV's. Not bad for a dive bar eh?

The bartender (didn't get her name) seemed to know the locals by name and was very friendly. She recommended a drink for my wife and said if she didn't like it to let her know and she would make something else. You don't often get that much attention from bartenders after you pay for the drinks these days because it's "on to the next and on to the next". My wife liked the jolly rancher flavored combination of vodka, 7-up and cranberry juice ($3.50).

The guys and I picked up a few pitchers of blue moon (with oranges) and took a seat. I think they could have more variety on tap, but with Coors, Budweiser, Heineken, Sierra Nevada and Blue Moon nothing really stood out to me. Then again, it all sounded like water. But for $10 a pitcher, no complaints, really.

This place is pretty solid, a little far from home but seems like a hot spot for locals.

I came here after Movie and a Brewskie with the rest of the cool kids from Yelp and had a seriously great time!  While "Limitless" left a bit to be desired, the after party location definitely made up for the movie's shortcomings.

I started with a Coors Light and a Lunchbox (shot of vodka with a splash of amaretto dropped into a pint glass of light beer and OJ), mmmmmmmm.  Perfect way to kick off the night!

The beer kept flowing and Danny was so extremely generous enough to buy a variety of appetizers for the group.  Lucky for me and my stupid religious convictions, a veggie plate ended up right in front of my nose.  Gotta love the smell of brocolli burps!  I was actually impressed that a bar such as this even had that kind of offering, especially because everything actually appeared pretty fresh and tasty with the exception of the tomatoes which were whitish in color.

Unfortunately for me, a plate of the wings also ended up within striking distance and wowzers, they looked droolworthy.  They weren't buffalo wings and instead of your typical sauce-y variety, they were crispy, spicy, and seasoned, with slices of jalapenos and green onions thrown into the mix.  OMG, I am getting hungry just thinking about them and I didn't even get to taste them.  Judging from everyone else's reaction though, I can infer that they tasted as good as they looked and smelled.

The best part of the night was when Danny remembered my name
    /swoooooooooooooooooon
It was all I could do to keep my composure and hold a coherent conversation.

The atmosphere of the bar was definitely my style and if it weren't so far away from me, I would love to work it into the rotation, but alas, Mira Mesa and I are notnearly close enough to become best buddies just yet.

I'm not a dive bar kinda girl, but came here after the M&B event. What an odd place to have a bar? I pass this area but would have never thought a bar sat in this shopping center (Lucky Seafood).

So there's pool tables, high and short tables and we all ended up gathering several tables together for some Yelp mingling. The dude kept bumping me with his pool stick - what's up with that?!

Appys and beer pitchers were ordered thanks to Danny!

I was only able to try the steak fries, which were hot and crunchy, but lacked flavor. I didn't care for spicy wings, so deferred on that; and I don't care for raw veggies and ranch, BLAH!!!

The beer, however, I was diggin'. I'm not sure what Bill poured me, but it was sure damn good.

Scene was OK, but I saw some sketchy people in and around the area...

Heard a lot about this place.  Heard someone was stabbed here.  Heard gangsters hung out here.  Heard bikers converged at this nefarious bar.  Had wanted to go but never alone.

One night had the opportunity to visit.  Walked in with some trepidation.  Walked in and was greeted by the bar tender.  She seemed friendly and explained the special.  Cheap!  Ordered my usual and sat there with my buddy Chris.    Found the people inside were friendly and sociable.  There seemed to be a couple military guys here from the base as well.

All in all, a good local dive bar.  Nothing fancy and cheap drinks, also not as dangerous as I was led to believe ;-)

    Surprisingly better than I expected!!!

I came here two other times in the past and was drinking with a bunch of drunk IT guys...sorry Jojo C. An ok experience given that I was drinking with a bunch of IT guys.

This time, I came alone and I received a totally different but better experience.

Happy Hour: $3 wells, and $3 domestic drafts between 4-8pm Monday through Friday. Today, they served free spaghetti during happy hour. Damn, you can't beat that combination.

They also had horse racing television on. Another one of my favorite sports.

I sat at the bar and ordered a beer and rum with pineapple juice. You definitely get a pretty strong and big drink for just $3.

They have a couple of pool tables, pinball machine, a lotto and lottery machine and a juke box for some tunes.

i couldn't believe i underestimated this bar, and it's only a few blocks away from my place.

Recap: Free appetizers during happy hour, cheap happy hour drinks, and horse racing on TV. Coming back for more.

I don't know why, but whenever I think of Tom Cat, I think of Tom Cruise + Katie Holmes.  Except, Tom Cat the bar is actually cool.

I've finally moved out of Mira Mesa (yay), and the one thing that I miss the most about Mira Mesa is Tom Cat.  I used to live within walking distance of this establishment, and then I moved to a place within biking distance. Though I don't think I'd ever go out of my way to go here, I'd stop by if I were in the neighborhood and in need of a drink... on a week day.

The beer selection is limited, but the drinks are CHEAP. There are plenty of things to keep me amused.  Pool tables, Wii games, darts, CA lottery machines... the list goes on.

The food is also decent and cheap.  There's always Jack in the Box next door if the bar kitchen closes.

In an area of San Diego that see's more chains than the movie Con Air, Tomcats is a breath of locally owned fresh air.

It's not the most glamorous of establishments, but it's sure got a lot of things going for them...

    Cheap drinks
    Loads of bar games
    Tasty and inexpensive bar food
A diverse crowd where you'll find businessmen to degenerates, and everything in between
Loads of TV's great for catching the big game
    Tons of parking

The above pretty much sums the spot up to a solid sports bar good for locals and passers through alike. I don't frequent Mira Mesa too often but if I'm in the area and looking for some greasy bar food and spirits this place will be my first stop.

I'm a self professed beer girl. I love beer....however, Tom Cat has a horrible beer selection. No, sorry....I don't like Miller Lite unless I am drunk and don't care what goes in my mouff

Like everyone else has written, this is a dive bar. Dark, worn looking, stiff drinks, sports blaring on the tv...wait, what? You can play wii???
The bartenders are nice and attentive, at least during my visits here.
The bar food they have is greasy but in a satisfying way. Deep fried mushrooms with grated cheese on top...yes, please.

Would I ever go out of my way to come here?
    hell no.

However, my best friend does lives in the area, so I might find myself here  when I am in need of cheap, stiff drinks (cause I am definitely not ordering beer like I prefer to do).

Yes 5 stars on a dive bar ! because it really doesn't get any better than this when it comes to dive bars. Great food I have had dinner here on more than one occasion and the food is always good. The Tomcat special wings are the bomb. The service is always good no mater when you come in. The drinks are strong and they don't cost a whole lot of lettuce either.
You see all types of people here from cowboys to bikers, old couples, thugs, bruthas, asians, business men , jocks, construction workers, moms and  pool sharks. One thing is for sure its a melting pot but everyone always has a smile on there face and gets along with each other. That's what makes this place cool.

I came here yesterday with Sarah M. and my roomie for a couple drinks and to answer some riddles from that old game MindTrap.  I've come to the conclusion that I'm a way better thinker after about 3 gin-and-sprites.

Honestly, get what you want here.  You won't be judged.  And it's a small enough of a dive bar that you'll get tended to on the regular.  This past visit, which was on a Thursday night, had the Tom Cat at about 25 percent capacity, and the clientele consisted mainly of older men knocking back their domestic drafts and shooting the ish with the bartenders.  In one corner was a younger group of friends keeping to themselves.  At one pool table was a recent 21-ish year-old dude who was loud and kept the jukebox going.  And at the other table was a twenty-something couple more interested in each other than their surroundings.

Anyways, at least on the weekdays it's nice and chill here, and the bartenders pour them deep.  I'm starting to prefer this joint over the Filling Station on Miramar Road, which has surprisingly gotten un-divey and way too bumpin' for its own good.

My first dive bar experience... it was alright. The bf bought two pitchers of Coors Light, three Irish car bombs, and a white gummy bear for $35 so the price definitely wasn't too bad. The white gummy bear wasn't that good (I haven't had one that matches up to the one at Jose's Court Room), Coors Light is Coors Light, and the Irish car bomb was alright... I didn't have enough stomach space to drink the entire thing.

People there are definitely cool- the bf and his friend were talking to random people for the 1.5 hours we were there and shooting pool. No creepers, either (which was what I was afraid of when I walked into the place with them). The bartenders were super nice =] I'd definitely come back to hang out sometime in the future.

Who ever would have thought that the bar that i've been driving by for years would end up being one of my favorites? First off when you see a bar inbetween jack in the bok and big lots, you wonder how you've haven't checked it out yet, but you really should.  Good cheap food, cheap pitchers, cool bartenders, chill people (depending on when you go), and pool.

Whenever you decide to check it out, tell Tim that Eric and Sabrina say "What up!"

I'm not a fan of dive bars, in general, but I am still able to distinguish between a good one and a bad one. Tom Cat is a BAD ONE.

First off, it's located in Mira Mesa. Enough said. Okay, I'll say a little more since I hate Mira Mesa so much... if you want to pass through about 20 + stop lights to get to a strip mall in the middle of suburbia, go to Tom Cat.

The drinks, for a well-known (at least by the girls in our group) fact, were incredibly weak. The birthday girl (no idea why she picked this locale) is the the 2 drink max type of girl. I watched her drink shot after shot after shot of everything from liquid cocaine to some straight tequila drink with Tabasco, and she didn't have to be carried out that night. I had 3 shots myself and didn't even feel the slightest buzz. Good thing the drinks were appropriately priced.

The crowd was uhhh, what would be expected...

They turned the music down and the lights up at 1AM.

Place sucks, but the good company made up for it (love you girls!).

Our hero's friend told him about TomCat in the following way:

"I walked by here once and it seemed to be an old folks' bar of some sort.  It looked really dark inside and it didn't exactly look like the kind of place I'd want to go into alone.  I think they serve food too... but if it sucks we can just go to Jack in the Box beside it.  Sooo... wanna check it out?"

Our hero is pretty bad at darts, but at least here he could blame it on the equipment.  The dart tips are shoddy and the all the replacement tips were wonky as well.  TomCat is definitely a dive in the worst kind of way.

Turns out that buying a six pack from down the street and drinking it at Jack in the Box would have been a better idea.  Heh.

    PROS:
    - Sort of cheap food.

    CONS:
    - The darts here have terrible plastic tips that are bent, blunt, or for some reason wont stick to the board.
    - Is there no table service here?  That's what it looked like.
    - Way too many stools made the bar feel crowded even when there were hardly any people.
    - Old, boring patrons.

No thank you. I went in and promptly walked right out.

The Jack in the Box next door had better ambiance.

Who in their right mind goes to a bar in mira mesa ? No wait,  I take that back.

If I still lived in mira mesa I probably would come here to pickle my liver.
