Can you walk to this place, no.  Can you easily drive past this place, yes.  Is it worth a trip, yup.

This place is not much to look at from the outside.  In fact my wife was a little shocked when I took her there.  There is some seating outside and some on the inside.  There are about 15 different subs, mostly different permutations of about 6 different lunch meats.  But its so good, and they put so much meat on the sandwich.  I'm pretty sure it would cost me more to buy all the meat and make these at home.  But if you want more, they do Italian beefs and sausages (and a combo).  All are solid and full of flavor.  I'm not sure what brand they use or if they are making their own, but well worth it.

Plus you can get a chocolate malt (could be a little more chocolaty) and Carol's cookies.

I'm not going to another sub shop while this place is so close to home

I love Tony's, it's the best sub place in the Midwest. Like an east coast sub place, but not!  I crave Tony's almost every day, love love love!!

I come here for two things, the launcher sub and the Italian Beef sammies. They PILE the meat onto the launcher when it comes to subs, so if you like cold sub sandwiches with piled high meat on a delicious sub roll, this place is great.

The Italian Beef is phenomenal.....In my opinion, it's better than Al's Italian beef. I get mine with Mozz cheese every time. Unlike Al's or other places that dip the entire bread in juice, Tony's uses just enough just on the inside to soften up the bread but not turn it into a soggy mess. YUM!

Come for the food and not for the chat.

I've been meaning to get to this place. I honestly kept forgetting about it, because it's a bit off the beaten path. Thank you hubby for remembering, because I had a feeling in my gut it would be fantastic. And yes it was!

We picked our kids up from school today and went for a sub sandwich journey. Tired...oh so tired...of Subway, I was delighted to try something new and different. It was a huge success.

This place is pretty divey, but I have to tell you, it's clean. Of course I asked my kids if they needed to pee at home before our venture and they said "no." Of course when we got to Tony's, they had to pee. I was scared...so very scared to open the unmarked red door. Was it a bathroom? A closet? I thought for sure it would be disgusting, and it wasn't at all. Whew! A clean bathroom in a dive is a good sign in my book (what book anyway?).

We opted for three turkey subs and a giant...I mean giant...dill pickle for my husband since he already ate.

There's a reason this place has been around for more than 20 years. It's because the food quality is outstanding. For $5.99 we each got combos - fresh Gonnella sub rolls filled with piled high turkey, cheese, the fixins, shredded lettuce (the really messy kind), a bag of chips, and a 20oz. drink. Hello?! Fresh, flavorful, and hands down way better than the other sub shop staple I'm tired of. And, I'm still full!

The hours are interesting. I'm obsessed with wondering what people order at 8AM in the morning? I stared down the menu thinking there must be a breakfast sandwich, but I'm guessing it's probably so people can pick up their lunch before they start their day. Smart people.

I noticed a sign hanging from the ceiling advertising 3-6 foot sub trays for parties and events. Great for game day, graduation day, family picnic events, etc.

Ok, the service. They are fast and to the point here. No time or interest for clever conversation. Don't expect a thank you or anything of the sort. If you are looking for love, you might want to go elsewhere. Honestly I didn't know whether to be annoyed or laugh at how unfriendly the guy behind the counter was. But, I came prepared for this after reading some of the other reviews.

Imagine for a moment the scene from the original Willy Wonka movie when Gene Wilder is sitting at his desk with his back to Charlie. Gene just sits there and ignores Charlie because he messed up with the bubble drink. That's kind of how I felt about the service here. Probably will take it to go next time.

Oh, I should mention there's a gas station on the premises if you want to really fill up.

    Wow.  In the bad way.

Walked in with two of my cousins around 7:30 and it was completely empty.  I think I showed up just before they were about to close based on the tone and body language of the guy behind the counter.  It was my first time here and I asked him what I should try. He recommended the Launcher but said everything was good.  I have no idea what is supposed to be in the Launcher but I'm positive it isn't supposed to be, what seemed like, 50 slices of bologna.  I saw him squirt oil and shake oregano on the bread but the bread was still dry and stale.  It was some kind of gastronomic miracle.  The real miracle is the number of 5 star reviews Tonys has gotten.

It's pretty good but it has a taste that only some like at all. I just go to subway which is two minutes away and much better. The restaurant and bathrooms are dirty and small. If you want a good sub, go somewhere else like the Quiznos practically next door. I'm not sure if I recommend it but you may as well try it if you're in the area seeing that some people love it.

Sysco products, service with a snarl. Love the fries though!
Chili extremely greasy and sandwiches nothing to write home about. Ambience non existent.

Tony's jives like a blue collar hot dog stand in queens more than a sandwich shop in the affluent north shore. Don't come here expecting service, the point is the sandwiches, which are large and moderately priced. The worst thing I can say about the place is the bread is too hard and you will end up squirting ingredients all over the place with every bite.

Get a big cookie if you're not worried about diabetes.

Would give it 0 stars if it was an option. Went there today with my son to get some ice cream (which wasn't that great by the way). The guy behind the counter couldn't have been any more rude! Not a "hello" or "what can I get you". I gave him the order...he almost grunted like he was pissed off he actually had to do something. He put it on the counter and walked away! What??? Really? Almost threw my change back at me. Being the shithole that this place is, I'd think they would be a little nicer & appreciate the business that comes in there. I'll never return there again. So much for trying to give a local small business MY business. Won't make that mistake again.

Boyfriend wants a milkshake/malt the size of a keg.

I want real food- meatballs with carbs? Yes Please!

Choice of French Fries or Chips- This gets better and better!

Outdoor seating too, where I can eat my toasty-crisp, meaty, drippy sub (shared) with the pooch who is about to embark on the joyous Puppy-disneyland known as Prairie Wolf Dog Nature Preserve? PERFECTION!

Satisfying, Fast, Clean space and you cannot miss one of those gigantic cookies the size of my head with creamy chocolate chips and delicious, buttery, molten bits of toffee oozing out. They are divinity incarnate!

You cannot miss it if you are out here, so much better than a greasy drive thru burger!

The sandwiches here are really not that good.  I've stopped eating here.   I wanted it to taste better on my next visit, and it never did.  The meats are way salty.... yuck.  The bread is ok... but not worth a visit.  Every time I ate here I kept wishing I had gone somewhere else for lunch as its not satisfying nor is it top rate.

The best on the North Shore, great bread meats and cheeses. Been going there for 20 years. Forget the chains. Great shakes and cones. Soup specials daily. This place is the real deal. They open at 8am.

You will not get a $5 foot long here. The subs are okay. I usually get a larger sub and recently asked for a six inch. That cut of bread was stored in a bag away from the other bread. Not sure why, but it was tuff! I mean really dry and not so fresh tasting. Maybe was a leftover from the day before that they were getting rid of.  I hope that was a once in a lifetime issue, I"ll try again. In the past, fresh bread and meats made this place special.

This was my go-to lunch spot when I was exiled to Bannockburn, down the street, temporarily.  Most of the sandwiches are really good, prices are quite reasonable and there's a good selection of subs and sides (I frequently ordered the BLT and potato salad).  Cute lil place.

Great subs. The Italian beef is actually quite good also even though this is more of a cold sub joint. There is usually a big line but it moves fast. I used to go here all the time when I worked out that way. Then I changed jobs and hardly ever made it back.  But now they recently opened another location in Lakemoor which is just as good in my opinion.

This is an old school sub shop. One of the last of the few holdovers that are still in Deerfield. The Launcher is their famous sandwich, I prefer the turkey and ham with everything. You can get a half or a whole, add some extras or take like they make it - it's all good. I bring everyone who visits Deerfield to Tony's. They also have good "hot-air" fries. Everyone gets treated fairly and everyone gets treated the same. I'm a fan for life.

Fantastic, no nonsense, sandwiches make this place an institution in Deerfield. I grew up on these subs and the bread here is the traditional Italian bread used for..well Italian beef. Definitely fresh and complements a sandwich way better than any Subway bread could...ever. If you are a hot head, the giardiniera is super hot and is quite tasty on a sandwich.

My favorite sandwich from here has got to be the Meatball. Its one decent size..saucy..beefy mess...so good.

The infamous "Air Fries" are cooked in their unique "Air Frier".  The fries themselves, in my opinion, dont really compare to a good fresh cut fry in terms of taste (you gotta have friolator grease and a thick idaho potato, my friend), but if you like a really crispy and thin fry (trust me, these are crispy) and you "like" to think you are saving calories, than have at it, hoss.

Located adjacent to Deerfield High School, next to a Citgo (I think) gas station. It is on the left hand side as you are driving on Waukegan Rd heading toward Bannockburn. Look for the Yellow Shack.

If I were 2000 miles closer I'd be having lunch at Tony's with my friend!  Its the top of my list of places to go when I'm back home visiting.  They are always so nice, and they make the best sandwiches anywhere!  Great atmosphere that hasn't changed since I was a kid. Tony's is a treasure - its one of the only places where I can say "remember when" and go there to relive the memory - and the food is just as good as when I was in jr. high!

There are no better subs anywhere. Period. The fries are made with air and are delicious, the soft serve is lovely. Tony Subs is a top five meals I can think of. If I am ever away from home this is my first stop. (well this or Michael's)But if you like subs- and not subway because that sh*t is FRAUD- you'll love it here.

Very good, fast, sub place.  Kind of unimpressive from the outside, as its essentially a shack next to a gasoline station on the side of a road and some train tracks, but I was surprised.  I could tell from all the nice cars in the small parking lot of the corporate lunchers ate here.  The inside is small, clean, and very air conditioned (this is a good sign for a place that serves so many cold cuts).  The bread is really nice and chewy, good for standing up to an italian beef or hot sandwich, but tasty enough and soft enough to be served with the standard cold, cuts, it stands up to italian dressing and oil too.  Since they do good business, the bread is fresh too.  While the bread really makes the sandwich, they don't skip on fillings here, which is a nice changup from "meat thin as paper" subway fast food type of subs.  The "Launcher" is a nice mix of bologna-like cold cuts and its the house special.  I enjoyed this place.  Pricing is on par with other sub places, but you do get better bread and more meat and toppings, so i'd say its worth it.

My yearly trip back home always has me writing a list of things I have to do. Since I reside in Texas, eating real food is the first on my list and Tony's seems to find a top three spot each year.
I feel the subs here are top notch. Every sub I have ever eaten gets compaired to Tony's and falls far short. I also enjoy the Italian beef. It is a place that takes me back in time thirty years or so and reminds me of a Deerfield that sadly, is no longer there.
My only complaint (and this is not reflected in my rating), is Tony's used to be located on Deerfield Rd. The current location was Anthony's Beef Inn. Mr. Vidi owned both places but was forced out or bailed out of the Deerfield Rd. location for some reason. He moved Tony's subs to the Waukegan Rd. location and closed Anthony's Beef Inn. Why he quit making those delicious roast beef sandwiches is a mystery that will haunt me till death.

This place has been around forever and nothing has changed. Their fries are "hot-air cooked," which means they feel greasy but apparently aren't. The bread is good and tough, so I had to avoid this place for 4 years while I had braces.

Another great local Deerfield institution.  As a HS student I would end up here once a week with friends to hang out.  This also would be the place we would sneak out to and bring lunch back from, so we wouldn't have to eat the horrid lunch food.  Tony subs makes amazing subs and each time I go in they always have a new addition.

Another tradition on warm summer nights is to stop and get the frozen yogurt.  It's so good.  And there are so many different toppings and flavors to add.

Both the subs and the frozen yogurt are a sure hit.

Fail.  Only a local who grew up fed this diet of bologna could ever want to return.

An old school exterior next to the gas station and a non chain theme beckoned me to try the local fare.  A mix of high school students, soccer moms, construction workers and a few random office workers from just down the street sit in their respective booths sucking down the worst quality meat you can buy.

If you've ever wondered why large chains thrive over small local places it's because places like this exist.

I lived on Fontano's subs for 5 years.  I still make special trips there from time to time.  But when I need a sub NOW I go here.   And I don't feel like I'm settling either.  Like all great restaurants they have plenty of newspapers for you to read while eating.  They also sell giant cookies about half the size of a suburban softball that are great.

Highly recommend! Best sub place in town, even better than Potbellies. I always get the Italian Beef with hot peppers. They "air cook" their fries which is nice because then they aren't so greasy. After a sub I recommend a soft serve ice cream cone.
