I know authentic Mexican and I am happy to have finally found it in Kokomo! Â Excellent tacos and tortas and yes, totally authentic (and don't even ask if they're hard or soft shell - if you don't already know the answer you might as well go back to Taco Bell).
But sadly, no lengua, cabeza or menudo on the menu - I briefly spoke to family member / owners and they indicated they only make it for themselves but Kokomo wasn't ready for it yet! Â They do offer tamales on occasion - you just need to ask, and yes - they're awesome! Â
Apparently the owners started Tortas Oscar in Galveston and sold it to their brother / uncle to open Tortas Johann so that's why the food is very similar. Â It's great to see local family owned eateries that obviously care about their food and place.
This little restaurant in a strip mall blew me away. Â This place was highly recommended by several Kokomo residents, so I made it a point to stop for lunch while I was in Kokomo for business.
I must admit, it didn't sound too promising when the directions I was given were, "It's in a strip mall between a smoke shop and a lingerie store." Â But the restaurant is extremely clean and the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful.
I am a vegetarian, and I was assured that anything on the menu could be prepared without meat. The ingredients are all fresh and everything that I have tried has been excellent.
Tortas, quesadillas and the authentic tacos are all amazing. Â The red sauce is perfect. Â
I travel for work throughout Indiana, Illinois and Ohio and I always look for good, clean authentic Mexican restaurants. Â This is one of the few I have found that qualify. Â Indiana has Mexican restaurants everywhere and although most are adequate none are special. Â This one is.
I live in Westfield but plan to make the trip to Kokomo when I am craving Mexican food, which is often. Â If I lived in Kokomo I would be at Tortas Johann at least once every week.
Hubby had the day off today so we went in for lunch again. This time the guacamole had plenty of seasonings and jalepeno peppers. It was spicy enough to make my nose run. To me thats a sign of just the right amount of heat. I had tacos and hubby had a torta. As I said before, I really like the tacos. Hubby's torta was really good too. The bread was soft and warm. He finished the whole thing. He ordered the regular size but they do offer a "double". So only order a double if you are really hungry. Today almost every table and booth was full of people. Aother good trip to The Mexican Grill. :)
Review Source:I would highly recommend. Â We have been going since they opened their doors first in Galveston then later in Kokomo. Â ALL the staff are very courteous and friendly. Â Food is excellent. Â Seems like every time we go in there they have added something new to their menu. Â Very very very clean facility. Â I have been privileged with a tour of the kitchen. Â No dirt anywhere. Â Jorge takes cleanliness serious at his restaurant.
Review Source:This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Kokomo. Â I go here for lunch whenever I can.
I love the tortas and the tacos. Â The tacos are very authentic and not like the run-of-the-mill tacos you would get at most Mexican restaurants that pop up on the Indiana landscape.
I also enjoy their tortas.
Best.tacos.ever. Â Very authentic, delicious, fresh, and not a bit greasy! Â The torta was phenomenal. Â The flavors were incredible and spot on. Â I had chicken tacos and chorizo torta, along with a refried bean and cheese dip. Â Since the moment I left this place, AKA "Mexican Grill" (across the street from Marsh supermarket) - I have been craving their food.
I grew up in California and went to Mexico a few times on vacation - this is my favorite taco. Â EVER. Â Must try this place if you love real Mexican food.
Menu features tortas and tacos as well as enchiladas, Mexican hamburgers (I'm intrigued), taquitos, quesadillas, a few simple desserts, along with a nice selection of side items.
Casual and friendly service - phenomenal food. Â The owner guarantees his food - if you don't love it, you don't pay for it! Â And, boy will you love it.
The downside? Â They're closed on Sundays. Â I wish this place was open 24/7 for any time I had a craving for tacos or a torta. Â At least there's a Galveston location that is open on Sundays. Â I grabbed a take out menu and I can't wait to go back.
Tortas Johann saved my lunch life recently when nearby Jay's Thai went on hiatus. It's labelled as a "Mexican Grill" and is the sister restaurant to Tortas Oscar in Galveston.
If you want authentic Mexican this is probably the closest you will get in Kokomo - the tortas are delicious! There's also standard fare like tacos and nachos. I would in fact most recommend the Nachos Oscar for anyone in a cheesy mood.
Tortas Johann has a very no-frills, family-owned atmosphere. The food comes fresh and fast. Prices are reasonable and in some cases cheap - be aware you'll get big servings. Even the cook will tell you a full-size torta is "bigger than a Whopper."
