There aren't many appealing dining choices along the US41/Cleveland Ave corridor in North Ft Myers, so the arrival of Tovos Grill a year ago has to be a very welcome place to the neighborhood. Â Tovos used to be an AZ Pizza, we were told, but the six owners gave up the franchise, kept the location, and turned it into a wood grill. T-O-V-O-S carries the first letter of each owner's last name, so let's hope they get along for a long time in this biz venture (!)
Our luncheon menu was a full page of pizza choices, and another two pages of soups and sandwiches. Â You could smell the wood grill on entering the resto, which was great. Â Grilled specialities included a BLT, hiding behind a wordy description that baffled the eldest of our group until she cracked the code of the pseudonym, 'triple decker."
I had a blackened sway. Enjoyable. It came on a pressed cuban roll.  Fries were a bit stiff and perhaps left in the fryer a tad too  long for my taste. Â
Our four luncheoners in two cars called for directions, and were sadly directed all over the map to get to what turned out to be a very easy to find location.  With misplaced trust in our telephone directions, our trip took an entire hour.  Instead of an apology at the podium, we got a very altered explanation alleging that we weren't starting where we said we had started.  Bad form.  But I took that to be an employee's  character flaw, and not a reflection on what the resto does best - cook simple, satisfying food.  I warned my guest that she would have to carry a passport the next time we tried a new place.  No telling where we would travel.
