Hint: Raspberry ketchup = pure genius!

During a self-paced walking tour and pub crawl around Athens, we chose Trappeze (easily the best known beer bar in the area) to be our grub stop... and man, were we NOT disappointed!

It was a gorgeous day, so we opted for a spot on the patio... where we discovered dogs are welcome (so we brought ours to sit with us instead of the back of the Jeep where they were hanging within view).

As patios go, it's small (a facet of the infrastructure in the area)... but we found it very cozy. We made friends with the tables to our left and right... chatted with passersby (who stop to pet the pups)... and got absolutely fantastic service (fast, friendly, and attentive)!

Their craft brew selection is great - and they even have smaller sampler-style pours for almost everything...... heaven for a beer nerd, like me, who loves to taste across a place's menu! I can't stop typing with exclamation marks...

For food, we had our server pile on a bunch of appetizers. We went with Belgian frittes, Asian pork tacos, pulled pork sliders, slider burgers, and beer-with-cheddar soup. Not ONE thing on the menu was anything less than stellar... and it was all VERY well priced!

Note: the raspberry ketchup, that came with the frittes? Yeah... amazing. This is a MUST try. Period. They should sell the stuff to go...

I'm bumbed this place isn't closer to home in ATL...... but that won't stop us from making the trek out this way again, even if just for dinner and drinks at Trappeze! ...!

Birdie A-1 waitress. Fantastic dinner celebrating my sons birthday. Live music topped it off. Beer selection probably best in Athens. Boiled peanuts delicious for an appetizer. Asian pork taco wonderful (and inexpensive). I really enjoyed the beer cheese soup. Really too much food. My son had the Steak frites - ordered medium and came out almost rare. Birdie literally ran it back to the kitchen and second time was medium. Fries with dipping sauce to die for (luckily they are not in Atlanta or I would be the size of a house after eating them often).

I stopped in at Trappeze Pub late on a Thursday night. I had been driving all day, my hotel was around the block, and I wanted something better that road food. This was an excellent choice. It was around 10 pm, so the place was kind of empty, but not worryingly so. I ordered a cheese plate for one, at $3.50, I couldn't pass it up. I had a choice of 3 or 4 cheeses and I went with a nice slice of Saint-Andre, a super rich brie. The plate also included crostini, walnuts, dried cranberries, sliced apples, and apricot preserves. Very satisfying. I also had a cup of French onion soup, which was good, and a giant quinoa salad with roasted sweet potatoes and a honey Dijon vinaigrette. I dreamed of that salad driving back to Chicago the following morning, it was that superbly delicious.

When all was said and done, I got all of that, plus a diet Coke for less than $20. The portion sizes were good and I felt it was decent value for the money. I was on my own that night, but the dim lighting and cozy tables and booths would make an excellent date location. I say thumbs up!

One of my favorite places to eat and drink in Athens. The beer selection is always in rotation with new kegs getting tapped and is awesome. Specialty casks, seasonal beers and local micro brews, as well as, national and international micro favorites. And one of the things I like most is it claims to be a pub and actually lives up to the billing. Much like many European pubs I love.

The food is beyond good. I've had just about everything on the menu and not had a bad experience yet. Everything was delicious, hot and quick to the table. Appetizers such as cheese plates, boiled peanuts, chicken wings, sliders etc. All top notch. The chefs specialty entrees are seriously some of the best food in Athens. I stay tapped into their FB page just to get the updates of what is the evening specials.

The weekly specials are so good that I hate to miss what Chris (the head chef) has dreamed up this time around. Last week was Gumbo and was killer, some of the best I've ever eaten, and I live to eat gumbo. Last night was chipotle rubbed roasted pork loin with avocado tomatillo sauces served with cayenne sweet potatoes and pistachio butter. My God, that was good. I savored every bite...and it was only $15.00.

This has become my regular "go to" spot in Athens. Love it!

Eh, I'd give it a two, but 1 is "Eek! Methinks not" which is what I think of the place. I won't be going back. I'm from out of town and was wanting to go there, eat, and and have about 4 drafts. So I didn't want to drive. I sent an email asking about their suggestion on taxi service and was given just a number that ended up being to a Hospice. I wrote back asking if they had a better number and was told no he usually doesn't take cabs because they are all bad. Does that sound unprofessional to you?

I ended up driving myself on a slow Tuesday. I asked the bartender for a dry stout. He said he didn't have any and pointed to a milk stout tap. I looked through the beer menu and settled for an imperial stout. He gave it to me in a snifter glass, which I guess is proper, but I'd rather have had it in a regular pub glass. No mention to me about half glasses like another reviewer mentioned. I guess he didn't notice my indecision or spending 10 minutes looking for something like a dry stout on the menu. I tried to strike up a conversation about Terrapin, but it was just me asking questions. When I stopped asking, he went to the other end of the bar and focused on the girls there. I guess he thought I was hitting on him. No mention of their tour or how it works or where it is. There's no real flow to mingle with people except at the front door end of the bar. Just gave me a feeling the place was unfriendly.

I ordered a couple sliders and for $7-8 each, I was surprised they were roll sandwiches. For a buck more each, I could have got a full burger meal at many good places in town.

Get a couple dozen craft brew kegs tapped, serve some tiny tappas at some plywood and 2x4 booths, hire some pretentious hipster staff and you got Trappeze Pub. You'll have more fun getting a couple different half growlers at 5 Point Bottle Shop and going to Cali and Titos.

A fortnight in Athens brought me to this great beer spot. The beer and small dishes brought me back countless times. Both beards behind the bar really know their stuff and able to suggest excellent beers by style. I like it when places do half pours. The beer list is big, some rare and many highly rated. Pilsners, lagers, pales, hoppy monsters, hybrids, swarthys, stouts, euros, sours, etc. The menu is big enough to cover the mood you're in, but small enough to reflect quality. Highly recommended. Always sat at the bar.

We stopped by Trappeze after attending the Athens Classic City Brewfest last weekend. While they had an amazing beer selection, we didn't get any because we were all beer-ed out (and we had to drive home!). We did however get several yummy items off the menu. We started with the Candied Cayenne peanuts - delicious, and then had two rather yummy meals - the Trappeze Dubbel (with the Asian Pork Taco & Pulled Pork Slider + the Blue Cheese dipping sauce for the fries), and the Double Pig + the Blue Cheese dipping sauce for the fries. The overall favorite was the Trappeze Dubbel and the peanuts. The Pork taco was very inventive and different and the fries were great (blue cheese sauce was also awesome, although a little rich once you ate a bunch of it).

We will definitely come back to Trappeze next time we are in Athens to try some more food items as well as drink their awesome beers!

I don't know what is more impressive, the amount of beer that they have to serve, or the deliciousness of their fries with garlic aioli. Go here for both and you will be quite happy.

i had the small bites. so burger slider, taco, and another slider. Came to $11 with tip/tax. um. not worth it, in my opinion. The food wasn't memorable. I can't comment on the beers as I'm under 21.

This place has a nice selection of beers on draft. I like that you can order half pours.
I also had two slider burgers; they came with pimento cheese and caramelized onions. They were good.

I would come back here for the beer selection.

This place has really improved its staff and food over the past couple years. Though I still find the beer to be overpriced, every food item I've tried (french onion soup, stuffed squash, quinoa salad, veggie reuban, etc.) has been a delight. It gets really crowded at night, so get there early or you'll be standing around a while.

One of my favorite hangouts in Athens. They have a wonderful rotating beer menu, with a lot of great selections that you won't be able to find anywhere else locally, or even at most liquor stores. Their draft menu is excellent ranging from a $3 terrapin to rare beers you will have trouble finding anywhere else. Their food has never disappointed. While their menu is not expansive their high quality pub style food is always tasty with a good beer or cocktail. They also have specials quite often which have always been well executed. A great place for dinner or just a late night snack.

Love the selection here. Waitress we had was nice. Steak frites were good. So were the boiled peanuts. French onion soup was a fail. Good place to go to hang out and talk to friends.

This review would be MUCH HIGHER if I were only reviewing Trappeze as a bar: it's a great place to get a beer with some friends, or even alone. The bar staff (as well as the wait staff) are incredibly friendly, and they know their stuff. You wont feel snobbery if you come in not knowing what beer you like... tell them what flavors you enjoy, and you'll end up with a great recommendation.

Having said that, it does not work so well as a restaurant. I went with a couple other people on a Friday night, and was incredibly disappointed by the food I received. Dry, overcooked pork tenderloin served with too-tough kale and bland mashed sweet potatoes. Certainly edible, but substandard to comparable restaurants nearby.

The service was friendly and attentive, but it took a pretty long time to get our food out--which was fine, slow service seems to be a given in this town.

Bottom line: don't come to Trappeze for the food, come for the beer.

Trappeze Pub is a great hang out pub with wide booths and a great beer selection. It's just a little pricey.

Known as one of the best beer pubs in the U.S., Trappeze Pub doesn't disappoint a beer lover. The beer menu is stocked with numerous beers from local and celebrated breweries. Only downside is the bar doesn't offer flights of beer. They'll sell half pints and taster pours (4 oz), but it all gets a little pricey if you're sitting at the bar for awhile.

The ambiance at the bar matches the quality of the beers available--there's something nice about resting your elbows on a polished hard wood bar. If you've got a few friends along, Trappeze has several booths to sit in and talk. The place has a nice, neighborhood bar feel.

As for the food, it's decent enough. Think upscale pub food. Very edible when you're a few drinks in.

I have to join in on the accolades for the pork taco. I liked the quinoa salad as well. This is a great place for anyone over the age of 25.

The menu is a lot more interesting than typical bar fare. However, prices are high and portions (other than the fries) could be more generous. The food itself is fine, though nothing so amazing I'd go out of my way for.

My husband enjoyed his burger, and I, the chicken sandwich with bacon. Fries with garlic ailoi were very good. Ask for them crisp! My daughter's caesar salad with chicken looked typical to me, but she enjoyed it, wtih a touch of bacon and a hint of anchovy.

As other posters mentioned, there is an extensive beer list. I'm not a beer drinker, but my husband is. He tried a local Athens ale -- Terrapin -- which he thought quite good and well-priced.

Trappeze has a solid following, nice ambience and efficient staff. Say hello to Claire, the gracious hostess!

This place is simply outstanding and a true one of a kind. Everything from the beef carbonade to the pulled pork sandwich was simply amazing.
As for beer, they have the finest European beer selection, you will find in Athens.
Go there tonight.

Solid beer menu with lots of diverse offerings, including some seasonals. I had the pub burger. The flavor of the meat was excellent. It was obvious that it came from grass fed cattle. My date had stuffed squash (acorn, butternut... I don't remember exactly which variety) and loved it.

For me, the food was like a pretty girl with too much makeup. I would have enjoyed it more without all the trendy overtones. Overall it was a pretty good experience and I'd eat here again.

We went here after searching for a good pub "across the khaki divide" and found found a notoriously hipster looking fellow behind the bar. Coming from Austin (hipster submecca) this was a bit of a turn off and we were expecting to be greeted with disdain and ignored. Quite a pleasant Athens culture-shock when he got to us quickly, was very nice and even helped recommend a good beer! Thank you nice hipster looking dude!
So far we've been here twice again, and the service has been great. The pork tacos are delicious and gluten free and their cesar salad sans croutons is not terrible (wouldn't order it again though).
The steak frites--though a bit on the pricier side--are awesome with whatever kind of dipping sauce you choose.
They are also a dog-friendly zone in their outside seating area! Yay puppies!

On our way back to the hotel after Leap Trapeze School, it was only fitting to quench our thirst (& grumbling stomachs) at Trappeze Pub. I'm so glad we did!

Reasonably priced with excellent service, I would say this a must stop for those who are on a budget and those who enjoy a tasty brew now and then.

Our waiter was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the beers on tap. He recommended the Festina Peche by Dogfish Head for a beer novice, like myself. It tasted exactly like peaches, you guys. Absolutely delicious. Go try it.

I also ordered the rosemary & garlic fries (...mmmmm...) and caesar salad. Everything was delicious! I scarfed those fries down like it was my job, and the salad was crisp, fresh, and tasty.

Did I mention that we stopped by around 9:30? I know they're open until 2:00 am, but I was impressed with how friendly the staff were and how fresh the food was in the later hours.

I may have only been passing through town, but it looks like a spot I'd hit up pretty frequently if I lived in Athens. Grab a brew if you're passing through!

I've eaten at Trappeze on both of my recent work trips to Athens, and both experiences were stellar! The service is great, the food is excellent, and the prices are (should I even say this?) insanely cheap relative to Atlanta.

The cheese plate is excellent, and pretty big considering the teensy portions most restaurants serve. I also really love their fries with the garlic aoli.

Their kegs are CO2-free, which makes the tap beers/ciders seem a bit flatter than I'm used to, but the selection is great. They pour the liquor with a heavy hand -- even better since the prices are so low!

First visit: Grumpy bartendress. Not the best pour. The wrong glass. And 8 bucks for a glass. I've spent too much time in Belgium I guess. 2-stars

Second visit: awesome waiter (bearded guy outside) who kept us happy and was friendly without being intrusive. I really enjoyed the beer selection, and forgot about the prices for a while. 5-stars

Don't waste your time with a table. Walk in, turn to the right and belly up to the bar. This is THE beer lover's bar in Athens. The variety here will make even the biggest of beer snobs giddy as a school girl.
Seriously though, these folks have a passion for pouring. The menu gives you all the vitals on each selection offered, but if you have any questions, do yourself a favor and ask. You would be hard pressed to find bartenders more knowledgeable about specialty and craft beers than the ones here. A bartender who knows their stuff is a beautiful thing. When you find one, chat them up and learn a thing or two. This is not your bar if you are looking for $2 PBR. (not a shot at PBR or the drinkers there of, it would just be like going to Chops and ordering a hamburger.) They also offer themed flights you can try.
I really think the food here is the secondary focus, but most of the sandwiches and some of the "small plates" are pretty good.
In a town that has it's share of loud and rowdy bars, this one has a more subdued feel to it. Terrific place to meet and have a conversation.
Love it.

It's not the kind of place you get too crazy, unless you're a beer aficionado. Trappeze, equipped with brooding bearded bartenders, offers an extensive selection of beers. Although the list may be overwhelming, make sure to not overlook the cocktail menu as well. Their BLT (bulleit bourbon, lemon, tonic) is one of the best I've had in Athens-- perfect amounts of each.
Enjoy your premium beer and friendly service!

OK, so you have children who have spent a big part of a decade schooling themselves in Athens and you come and visit from time to time. You want a place that has good food, good cold beer and which is comfortable for, well................old people like me.

So you go to Trapeze and you are wonderfully surprised.

First, they have huge booths which will fit your brood particularly if you have to have a labor management discussion about grades or drinking or boyfriends. They are deep, comfortable and relaxing. And private.

Service is Southern friendly with lots of smiles and very helpful.

And, then, you have the pimento cheese. You folks who live up North can stop reading right now. Unless of course you want to find out why Southern women are so damn beautiful --- pimento cheese and pulled pork sliders.

And, oh yeah, cold, cold, cold beer.

So if you are feeling good or depressed --- works both ways --- go to Trapeze and have a couple of coldies, some pimento cheese and some sliders. Game changer.

And, Bob's your uncle!

I'm giving Trapeze four stars at best. While the beer selection is great, there is nothing that pisses me off more than when my beer is a short pour, and let me tell you - both of my Bells Two Hearted (best beer ever) were short 3/4 of an inch. While you may think this isn't a big deal, I would convince you that it is, indeed. Head over to http://thebeergauge.com/ if you need further convincing.

Aside from paying for two beers and receiving only 1.5, the food was good, but nothing special. The beer cheddar soup was tasy, and the silder plate was also good, but the garlic fries were greasy and underwhelming.

The service was very good. The ambience and overall feel of the place was nice.

Not a 5 star pub, though.

Atmosphere: No wait here on a Saturday night. Was hoping to be able to watch a game while we are, but no TVs. Not a big deal, just kind of expected one in the bar. The booth seats were wood and sat higher than a normal bench seat, which made them uncomfortable. Place was clean.

Service: our server was knowledgeable about the menu and the extensive beer on tap selection. Friendly & just attentive enough.

Food & Drink: awesome beer on tap selection. I like that you can order 1/2 pours; makes it nice if you want to try a couple of the higher alcohol IPAs. Four of the five dishes we ordered were awesome. Started with beer cheddar soup and we all liked it a lot. Hayley had sweet potato fries with garlic aoli and she liked those as well. For dinners, I had the special which was hanger steak and frites. Perfectly cooked and the best thing we ordered. Hubs had the tacos with a side of beans which he said they were both delicious. The only bomb was the fish & chips. Over breaded in cornmeal, the outside was bland.

I would definitely return, although with all the fabulous restaurants in Athens, I'll try some new ones first.

Sweet tater fries = awesome. Veggie hummus sandwich, pretty good, if pricey. Not much else for a vegan here in terms of food (the vegetarian reuben made me sad because the Russian dressing isn't vegan, so the one time I ordered that, I basically got avocado, lettuce, and a bun, and I had to ask for mustard... Not much in the way of creativity.

But it's okay, I'm actually a beeratarian. Amazing selection of draft beers, and prices aren't terrible. I was disappointed in the one Wild Heaven beer I tried, though.

Unlike Bailey D, I don't find this place hipster-ish at all. Well, maybe a tad, but that's true of everything in Athens. The employees here are generally nice and not douchey, and can tell you all about the beers without being a asshole beer snobs. Also, 1000 Faces coffee is awesome.

Way better draft selection than The Globe and better service.

I think I'll miss Trappeze when I leave Athens for good. No, I don't think I will... I know I will. Let me count the ways I love you.

Dear Trappeze
You are such a tease
When I leave
I'll be peeved
I love your decor
Cuz I just want more
Like your sweet potato fries
Brighten my eyes
Delectable, addicting
Could I be dreaming?
Special of the day:
A perfect pasta par-tay
Your million drinks
Means lots of clinks
Hard to make a choice
But I hear a voice
"Here's an ample
Beer sample"
Such a nice staff
Makes me laugh
Even your wobbly tables
That require cables
I don't mind a bit
Cuz you've really lit
My tastebuds on fire

We went for brunch. I know, brunch at a bar is rather adventurous. But i had the french toast made with the terrapin beer bread. Delicious! Also came with some fresh fruit, maple syrup, and whipped cream. Very inexpensive. My girlfriend had the spinach salad. It had walnuts, nice dressing, and was very fresh. Good job, trappeze!

Best beer bar in Georgia. Prove me wrong. (I mean Brickstore in Decatur may give it a run depending what on tap)

The beer selection here is amazing, as the 30 page bottle menu will attest. They have stuff in their cooler that I haven't seen outside of Belgium. Their draught selection is great all the time. They are in tune with the seasonal comings and goings. They always have some sort of surprise for the beer snob. (Last time it was Southern Tier Choklat!) I am a stout fan and they always have something that makes my taste buds smile.

The food is great if you are beer nerd. It can be a little pricey but the tastes make up for it. Don't go there and think you are going to be stuffed leaving the place, but know you will extremely happy with how everything taste. They use beer in almost everything on the menu and it is great.

The atmosphere is a pub through and through. No TVs, so bring some friends or make some to have a great conversation with. Seating is tight when the crowd picks up. However, the fact that they don't carry light beers means the douche factor is way down most of the time.

Finally, the staff is always helpful and can make a recommendation no matter your taste in beer.

I give this place one more star than my previous review because I tried something tonight that made up for it :) THE ANGUS BURGER. If you're a fan of Five Guys Burger and Fries---this is a step up from it. You get swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms, grilled onions, field greens, tomatoes, all on top of a juicy patty of beef and a grilled onion bun. Do I have your mouth watering yet? YUM!

I subbed the regular fries for sweet potato fries. Keep in mind if you ARE getting the fries don't expect, crispy, thin cut fries. Instead, they are medium cut and NOT crispy....I wouldn't say soggy but definitely NOT crispy. Take what you will of that.

Overall I kinda liked the second time around. There were a few beers I didn't know I'd like or not so I got to "sample" them in shot glasses before I ordered them. Pretty decent overall. I still won't give them 5 stars because I feel like the food still isn't up to par (*especially the fries) but whatever! I'm a fan!

Service was amazing as always---they really ONLY hire the best servers around!

I was an undergrad at UGA a few years ago and had my share of nights downtown at the soro/fraty bars. (read: bourbon street) but since my tastes have matured SO much (from age 22 to age 25) I find the finer things in life to be housed at Trapeze

Cool, calm, relaxing, BUT still a bar. Still a nightlife 'event', if you will.

Slightly older crowd until around midnight ... at which time there is no such thing as an older crowd seeing as how the entire down town area is inundated with undergrads (which is not all that bad (read: fast times at ridgemont high, anyone?))

Anyway, if you like a chill drink with friends, go to Walkers before 8pm and Trapeze after 8...thirty pm.

The most beer selections in town for sure. Last time I checked there are 25 on tap and 175 more in the bottle. Aside from that, the one thing that sets Trappeze apart from the other bars is the expertise of the bartenders. If you're looking to find some new beers that will blow your mind without an elitist attitude that will blow your fuse this is the place. The guys behind the bar know their stuff, and love to share their passion for beer. Just tell them what you like and they'll guide you to the perfect new beer. However, don't come looking for Bud Light, Coors, Miller, etc, etc. they're not here. My suggestion is the Allagash (Curio if they have it.)

The atmosphere is great; especially sitting out in the cold watching half of Athens walk by. There's a great smoking area outside if you smoke. I'm in Atlanta now and wish I could drop by more, but definitely try to every chance I get. I've found most of my usual beers from a few trips here.

How do you make a coffee shop 10x better then it already is? Turn it into a pub. Duh!

Trappeze has an extensive list of beers and whiskeys to choose from. It shouldn't be hard to find something that tickles your fancy. Trappeze is a really good place to come as group and settle in one of the many over-sized booths. It gets crowded real quick. It can be trouble finding a place to sit. So once you are seated - stay there! Guaranteed somebody will scoop it up seconds later.
