Oh Downtown Humble, what would I do without you?

A good friend of mine, just back after another college semester in Atlanta, decided that we should go to a bar. After a quick Yelp, we decided on the Twin Oaks Tavern, as neither of us had been there before. "It may be rather hilarious."

This little pub is shaded by two enormous Oak Trees that nearly cover the front of the building, so naturally, I drove right past it the first time around. Got it on the second try though, and unlike visiting many downtown bars, there is actually enough parking here.

We were by far the youngest people in the bar, with a margin of at least 20 years, but maybe that was just because on that particular night the live music was a blues band (Blues generally isn't big with the youngins I guess?) Even though I wasn't expecting to find live music I was surprised by how good they were! Who expects to find decent music in a tiny bar in Humble??? (From now on, I will :D) They even played a few blues-ed up Beatles covers which were very catchy. It's a shame my companion was not a blues dancer because my toes were itching to join the smattering of couples on the tiny dance floor.

Although there were tables open, we sat at the bar, just below the TV showing SNL. An odd channel choice, but at least it wasn't sports! The bartenders were very friendly, and seemed to know their way around the incredulous number of bottles. Others have mentioned the small number of taps (6 to be exact), but there was plenty of selection if you include bottled beers, ciders, and mixed drinks.

Saturday is not a night for Happy Hour, so I have no idea what there specials usually consist of, but they do have $2 tequila shots all the time! My fresh-from-Atlanta friend was SO IMPRESSED that the bartender handed out limes and a salt shaker with the tequila shots without us even having to ask for them. It's good to be in Texas.

Afterwords, my hair did smell like cigarette smoke, but the smoking didn't bother me too much while were were inside. It's a nice place with a chill and cozy atmosphere. I'll definitely come back next time I want to visit a bar close to home.

There are two bright, shining stars of hope during this stage of life in which I have found myself residing in Humble, TX. 1. Chez Nous and 2. Twin Oaks Tavern, both walking distance from my home. It's not often that I can convince people to drive out of the loop, but when I do, these are the 2 places we have to offer. I'll take it.

Yes, the Tavern smells. Badly. Like a smokestack.

If you wind up being there on karaoke night....jackpot. Better than reality TV.

On our last visit, one of my friends was in town from CA and she kindly drove out for a visit. We decided to walk over to the Tavern and began to catch up over a couple glasses of house Cab. They do have a few wines here, not great ones, but not bottom shelf types either. Usually I have a vodka-soda or sometimes beer, they have all the standards.

It was fairly busy (if I recall correctly it was a Friday?) and we sat at the bar. At some point, upon returning from the restroom, a mysterious blue frozen fru fru drink appeared in front of us, compliments of Mystery Patron (see in photos: The Blue Drank). We tried to guess who, but the possibilities were endless. And kind of hilarious. I didn't know the bar had the capabilities of producing such a beverage (we did not actually drink it so I can't speak of it's quality). Two guys came by later and asked if we had ever been to [insert generic tropical island name here], so the mystery was solved, though they seemed displeased we hadn't been on the hunt to figure it out. I guess that's what you get for sending a blue frozen fru fru drink to not single women drinking red wine. But I digress.

My husband joined us after he was done with work, and although he claims to hate the Tavern, even he had a good time. Despite what he might tell you, we love the Tavern and I will continue to make him go there until we leave Humble.

Can't call it a dive. Too pleasant. Great happy hour. Great conversation with the regulars. Great bartender. When I'm in town, I'll be back.
