Ate here for the first time today.  Had been wanting to after reading all the good reviews.  Well the atmosphere, food and service were all EXCELLENT.  I had the sauteed seafood and my husband had a steak (he's not much of a seafood or sushi eater).  Both were excellent.  All the seafood was very tender, flavorful, the saute sauce was great.  He really liked his steak, I tasted it and I really like the spicy crust.  We had a booth and we really liked the seclusion.  Service was great, we never lacked for drink refills or anything else.  Yes it was a little pricey but you get what you pay for. We will be back!

This is by far the BEST restaurant in Terre Haute.  If you ever find yourself in this town, this is the place to be.  I was a bit surprised at the quality here seeing as where this place is located.  In the area, you will find numerous liquor stores, tattoo shops, gas stations - but not very many five star restaurants.  The next best thing in this town is Applebees.  In all seriousness though, being an avid sushi lover I was skeptical when my boyfriend suggested this place and I think...brought me, the Chicago-native sushi lover here for dinner.  I have been to several great sushi places and have tasted the best of the best.  I was thrilled that there is a hidden gem in this town.  I know that I ordered a few things that were all really good, I apologize that I don't remember exactly.  But wanting one more bite of goodness I did ask the waiter for a suggestion and he recommended the Dr. Singh special.  I wish that I had just ordered this because it was huge, but it was by far the best sushi creation that I have ever tasted.  The next time I go here, I will just order this and maybe some tuna cubes.

This is the best restaurant in town and probably best sushi joint in the midwest. The restaurant itself is spotless and has a very modern feel for it. There is general seating i the center area and private booths on the sides available with reservation. The staff is very friendly and can provide good recommendations if your a sushi newbie. Pretty good sake selection both hot and cold. I'm not a big sashimi person but the sushi rolls are very good. I highly recommend the Dr. Singh roll.

This is one of the best restaurants in the Midwest. The owner lives next to my cousin so I met him and his wonderful family long before I was able to talk my cousin into trying the food. Spectacular doesn't do it justice. Now every trip to Terre Haute must include Umi.

I've had some great sushi (Boston, San Francisco, Portland) and was wary of a midwest (middle of Indiana) place. But I was pleasantly surprised by Umi. Decor and ambiance was nice. Dimmed lights, water features, and asian (of course) theme. A few private booth areas could make this a nice date night location. The main dining area is spacious and the place was clean (even in the bathrooms). We ordered miso and several sushi rolls and enjoyed all of the food. It was fresh and not fishy and well made (not falling apart). The waitress was helpful with answering questions and we enjoyed our evening. I wouldn't say it is spectacular (nor that it rivals those places I mentioned earlier) but it is definitely worth a visit in Terre Haute and the only place to get sushi in town. They also have several other options for a meal if you are not ready for sushi.

Check out the Doc Singh! Get the half unless you're making a meal out of it. The combo rice they make is KILLA! I also get the beef tataki! This place is the best Sushi Joint I have been to ever. I've been to Cali, Vegas, East Coast, The gulf, NOLA.. and this is by far the best! Decor, service, quality, and the freshness is like he has an ocean in the back and he just skims the fishys right out and cooks it up! Keep it up Chi!

OH! He also has a fish market in the back!

Clean, tasteful and well decorated. Food is the best. Servers polite and know the menu.  Probably Terre Hautes best restaurant.

I read the reviews and thought we were in for a treat!  My girlfriend was visiting from the Virgin Islands, and we wanted a nice place to catch-up and great food.  Plus, we both had been travelling and Terre Haute was a midpoint for us.....

Well, the food was awesome.  The service was horrible.  I asked for utensils and by the time the server came back my appetizer was cold.  I repeat the service was horrible.  I asked for two separate checks so I could expense my meal, but I wanted to pay for both of them with my credit card.  She ran the card through once not a problem, but throw away the individual receipts!!!  When I asked her to reprint them as per my request, she preceeded to dig in the TRASH CAN AND TRY TO FIND THE RECEIPT.  I told her "Honey, this is an authetic Coach handbag, does it look like I'm going to put a piece of garbage in my bag".  BTW, I know she dug out the trash because I HAD TO GET UP TO GO TO THE BACK AND ASK FOR MY SERVER BECAUSE SHE DISAPPEARED.  I always start tips at 20% and go up or down from there depending on service.  Rarely do I leave less than 15%.  I LEFT HER NADA.  The first time ever I haven't left a tip.

We went with the bento boxes - one shrimp and one salmon. The tempura shrimp, rice, salad, were delicious.  It was a great value for the price.  Everything was extremely fresh and well prepared.  The ambiance was excellent, and the cozy booths seem to be a great place to take a date.  I would caution about ordering the chicken as it was reather dry.

    I was extremely disappointed.

I was NOT expecting this place to be as good as it was.  Afterall, it's the midwest which makes eating sushi risky.  My boyfriend and I were floored.  The decor and inside of the restaurant was super modern and trendy.  We sat at the sushi bar so we could watch the amazing fish tank they had, but next time I'm going to reserve a booth, they were very private.  Drinks were a little slow, but the saki selection was extensive.  The rolls were fresh, better than most of the places I've eaten in L.A.  The only roll I did not like was the cowboy roll, a california roll with filet minon.  The filet minon just didn't seem to go with the sushi, but we knew it was a risk when we ordered it.

Luckily, this is the closest sushi place to me as of now, so I'll be returning VERY often!

It was ok, just unremarkable.   A decent, although typical, menu and the atmosphere/decor was nice.    However, I wasn't impressed by the quality of the fish.   My meal had some fish that was starting to turn slighting (just slightly) slimy.   Since I usually order pieces, the quality/freshness of the fish is critical.

Maybe I caught them on a bad day but I've never had this issue with another joint right down the street so I probably won't be giving Umi a 2nd chance to change my opinion.

Based on reviews from Yelp, my wife and I made our first trip to the Umi Grill.  To set the tone for this review, we considered it a personal victory that we only resorted  to silverware once as we needed to split the last piece of beef.  :)

As first timers, we were a little intimidated by the menu.  The first page has detailed descriptions of the various terms and preparation methods, but we still had some questions.  Luckily, our hostess was very patient and knowledgeable.  Her help really added to our experience.  She took time to explain the various dishes and made helpful suggestions.

They offer an extensive selection of cooked and uncooked sushi.  The menu is also full of various beef, chicken, pork, duck, and other seafood dishes.  Soups and salads round out the choices.

In an effort to sample the most in a single trip, we chose to split the Umi Flight.  This consisted of four separate entrees, beef, sea bass, shrimp, and scallops served separately.  All of it was delicious.  Our personal favorite was the shrimp, but none of it went to waste.  :)
We had a lot fun tasting the various foods and discussing the new flavors.

I am hoping that on our next visit we will get to try the sushi.  There is an extensive selection available.

Our meal came with miso soup (spelling?)  and a salad, both of which were excellent.  We also ordered a fried vegetable appetizer.

Again, the atmosphere and our hostess really added to the experience.  If you are new to Japanese style dining, I suggest  a time of day when the staff has some time to spend with you.  Also, make sure you have time to enjoy the experience.  Our service was excellent, but it took us a bit to figure out the menu and select our food.  I wouldn't suggest bringing young children.

I encourage anyone to give it try.  Especially good for a date or night out away from the kids!

I've lived a lot closer to the ocean yet I'd be hard pressed to find better sushi!  Other options as well and even some vegetarian choices that are great.  Great atmosphere as well!

Step into Umi and step out of Terre Haute...at least for an hour or two.  The food is amazing, the ambiance is modern and chic, and the service is fantastic.  It takes a while to get your food, but that's a good thing.  The dishes are delicious and creative.  Many "special" entrees are not on the menu, so ask your server what they recommend.  You won't be disappointed.

New location is great (just down the street from old loc.). Great atmosphere really clean and classy looking.  Some of the best sushi I've had in the Midwest. Pricing was reasonable on most items. The lunch bento boxes are a great deal. I make sure and hit Sushi Umi whenever I'm in Terre Haute.

As fresh as it gets when you're living no where near an ocean.  When you step into Sushi Umi, you instantly feel the good karma.  Perhaps its the rice-paper covered windows, or the carefully balanced feng shui, but it definitely prepares you for a good meal.  There's a large selection of standards and inventive preparations.  When it comes to sushi in Terre Haute, Sushi Umi is definitely the best.

A gem in Terre Haute.  The sushi is fantastic, as well as their other food.  Nice atmosphere, you can sit at the bar and watch the sushi chef if you want.  Everytime I'm back in TH for homecoming I have to stop here.  This is a great place to take a date, and did I mention the food is fantastic?  Tasty sauces, attention to detail, beautiful stoneware, fresh and yummy! Go here if you haven't already!
