Visited on a saturday afternoon as weather was nice and knew they had an outside section. Â On arriving with a party of 4, was told by the waitress she would look for outside seating, before she could do this, another woman (the manageress?) came over and told her she would take care of this, we were asked if we had a reservation, it was 2.50PM on a saturday afternoon, who books a table for this time of day? Its not exactly prime time. We were told we could not sit outside except on one small table that was in direct sunlight and so would be hot, even though there were maybe only 4 tables outside that were taken. We sat inside and when we left around an hour later there were still only 6 tables occupied outside. As we left the woman who asked us if we had reservations was sitting in the sun with 4 other servers who obviously had nothing to do. Being from the UK I was looking forward to trying this place but I and my family wont be returning.
Review Source:Just returned from Union Jacks. What a disappointment!!!Had resies for 5:30 pm for the outside area. At arrival the five of us ordered drinks apps, and burgers. Patio was almost empty but quickly filled up.Service by non caring wattress was pathetic at best, to9 watch her go thru the minimal motions was irritating. Burghers arrived at 7:30 ,no lights on table had to ask for a candle to see meal. French fries sucked , burgers sucked, it all sucked! I have not left less than an 20 % tip in years, but this was it,10% BITE ME!!! I will never be back!!
Review Source:Well, my guests during the previous visit which earned 3 stars convinced me to give it another chance.  I remain concerned about the lack of credit cards and the failure to note that on the website. An ATM machine is available but it  is not an acceptable substitute since those machines in variably have a hefty service fee. Today I came prepared with much cash but it would be a shock for some coming for the first time as I did last month.
We arrived at 11 on a Sunday and the restaurant opened a little late on this day. Still service was quite good.
There were 4 of us. Two had the same meal as during our previous visit and they had similar good experiences. The third person had a pulled pork sandwich and enjoyed it. I considered retesting the hamburger but decided to follow my own advice so I had a crab cake sandwich. Â It was flaky with lots of crab meat and no filler. Loved it.
We sat outside this time and the ambiance was relaxing.
My wife and I actually accidentally stumbled upon this place back in the woods on the way home from another one of our favorite restaurants in the area - The Bridge Inn in Pleasantville. But Union Jacks - What another great place we have found! Â
Great ambience.
Fantastic beer selection.
Excellent Food.
Very fair prices.
Fast friendly service.
The place sits back off a country road in the middle of nowhere, nestled in the woods, right on the banks of the Manatawny Creek. Seemed very clean. Casual. Prices were very fair for the quality.
I had what was probably the best prime rib sandwich I've ever had! Absolutely delicious!!
I've seen others complaining a lot about the lack of credit card payments. Personally, I could care less. Also, helps the restaurant keeps their prices down, AND helps the servers keep more of their tips. So, bring cash, or use the ATM. Seems a stupid thing to bitch about IMO.
Very nice bar and dining areas - kind of English Pub kind of decor. Also, a beautiful outside dining area along the creek with live music on the weekends that my wife and I plan on checking out VERY soon.
Place seems to be family run, so needless to say, the service was friendly and fast. All in all, a great staff.
Overall, I can say with confidence, that if our follow up visits are as good as our first, this could definitely end up on list of favorite haunts for a long time to come!
I know my review wasn't that long ago, but I just went back again. The prices are spot on. Not too pricy. And I'm a HUGE admirer of getting a stein with my beer. That's just something you don't see too often. I get the feeling bars have moved away from the idea of the "mug" for convenience. Easier to wash a pint glass.
Also, the wing flavors they offer stand out from selections you'd get anywhere else. They stray from the more, which I can admire. Heck, even their menu selection is unique. I had an order of Crab Quesadillas. They were perfect as an app. Light fair. Enough room for the main course.
Seriously, check this out if you're in the area. OR like me, make the drive! The beer selection? Again, awesome.
JUST remember. No Credit Cards, but an ATM is available.
Awesome place. Â We go to eat every week and hit this place at least once a month. Â They have an incredible craft beer selection that is rotated frequently. Â The food is very good, especially the nightly specials. Â The pricing is reasonable and the outdoor dining is nice.
Only problem is they don't accept credit cards....bring cash or pay high fees on their on-premise ATM. Â I highly recommend this restaurant.
Still a fan but since we decided to venture forth from our usual spinach dip and burger night into something else, I figured I'd write an update.
This place still rocks for its ambience and beer selection. Hands down the best in the area.
Tonight we tried the wings and they are most certainly deserving of the "Best" title although I do not know if "Best in the World" is accurate. Until I eat all the wings the world has to offer, I am not certifying this claim. Although "excellent" does come to mind. Meaty, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, flavorful, and very satisfying...I like these wings a lot. There are tons of options, we went with the Apple Honey BBQ version as my friend is completely adverse to spiciness (I know, but I cannot disown her, I like her too much).
I was worried that we were going to get some sickly sweet, cloying, sauce but it was perfect. AND it had enough spice to not trigger my friend's hair-trigger aversion to heat while still satisfying my love of complex flavors. I am going to go back and try every version now. These are some great wings.
One thing I would like to lobby the kitchen on, however, is their treatment of mussels. This is the second time I have had mussels here and I figured the first time was a fluke so I didn't bother to write about it. Now I need to because it is apparently NOT a fluke.
OK, so you get a big bowl of mussels and their hand-cut fries (which are also delicious) but both the basting liquid and the dipping sauce are butter. Butter with some garlic and maybe some red pepper flakes...but mostly butter.
Clams? Yes, butter. Lobster? Yes, butter. Crabs? Yes, OK, maybe butter.
Mussels? NO BUTTER.
Mussels are too rich and buttery themselves to be buttered. They need acid like wine or citrus. Or they need acid plus tomatoes, like a marinara sauce. But, please, no butter on mussels.
The mussels themselves are good and plump (although some were quite gritty) but the sauce was a total put-off. This kitchen is so decent otherwise that I was a bit shocked but I don't want to lower their rating because this is a great place to be.
But if anyone from the kitchen, or anyone who knows anyone in the kitchen, is reading this: please do a white wine/garlic thing or a marinara thing? Please no more buttery mussels.
Thank you.
(And I still think you have the best burgers and spinach-artichoke dip to be had!!)
I love this bar/restaurant! The service is always outstanding. The beer selection is incredible! My husband and I order the asiago crab dip appetizer. (I highly recommend that.) The wings are the best; I won't eat wings anywhere else. I order the medium hot wings, but they have many other kinds as well. We always order cheeseburgers. They are juicy and delicious. The fries are handcut. I always get the sweet potato fries. This is a very laid back fun place.
Review Source:What a plesant surprise! Â
I went here expecting little but bar food, but got some great out of the ordinary cuisine. Â I've eaten here twice, and had the Ahi Tuna, and the Blackend Catfish sandwich. Both were great. Â The only thing I didn't care for is a personal preference. They have Yam fries, that they toss in a maple syrup based sauce. Â I'm not fond of adding sugar to sweet potatos so I don't care for them.
Otherwise the food was very good.
Then there is the Beer selection. If you like Beer this is your heaven. They have over 400 different varieties that change seasonally. Â I tried a Pumpkin brew (not dogfish) and it was wonderful.
Only down sides: NO CREDIT CARDS. They are cash only. Â Other down side is you need to make a reservation durring peak hours. Â
Overall I would go there again.
Union Jack's is one of my favorite places. Â Great beer selection and many good imports/micro brews on tap. Â The atmosphere is also great compared to other places in Berks county. Â The live music keeps things lively and I do enjoy the outdoor seating in the summer time. Â The food is good and many items on the menu are excellent. Â The only thing holding me back for 5 stars is the lack of excellent fish and chips. Â That is one thing I would expect at a place called Union Jacks. Â Despite this small pet peeve, it is really a great place. Â Other items I have had are excellent from the burgers to the crab cakes. Â The one unique thing about this place is it is literally in the middle of nowhere. Â It really is a place to go and escape the world for a few hours. Â Completely enjoyable and highly recommended.
Review Source:This restaurant is across from a roller rink I used to skate at when I was 12. A little hard to find if you aren't from the area. They have a lot of seating at this place, most of it seems to be outdoors. We were seated outside near the small bar, at about 6 on a Saturday. It was not full. I was delighted by the beer menus because they meet the requirements for any good beer menu: ABV, style notes, and price. They even take it a step further by telling you how much, in ounces, you will receive. I feel like the taps didn't vary that much, but I've only been here once. Overall, the selection is great in quality and quantity. Our server was knowledgeable about beer, and an all around nice dude. Yes, the spinach & artichoke app is pretty good. Our entrees were all delicious. One of the members of my party ordered catfish but received tuna, which I suppose was an honest mistake. I do recommend the chicken fingers, their honey mustard is awesome -- so are the fries. This spot is cozy and sweet. I will certainly return for drinks AND food.
Review Source:I heard about Union Jack's several years ago from a local elected official who had his election night party here. Â How in the world did I live in Berks so long and never know about this? Â If I could give UJ's a 5 for beer, I would, especially in the fall when they get in Southern Tier Pumpkin Ale and the Dogfish Head PumKing. Â There are plenty of bad, overly sweet, or bland pumpkin beers in the world, and UJ's knows how to pick out the best (the ones with the creamy flavor). Â This is the place to impress your beer snob friend.
The just-ok pub food and refusal to take credit cards bring down the ratings (ATM on premises, with fees). Â However, I am starting to rethink my relationship with credit card companies and to have more patience with businesses who do not want to be ravaged with the charges these companies pile on top of the outrageous interest they extort. Â People need to rise up and refuse to do business with banks who take bailout money but keep on paying massive bonuses to executives yet don't reduce their rates and fees for us poor common slobs. Â And people wonder why we need regulation, sheesh... Â I refuse to carry a balance, but not everyone has that luxury.
Ok, deep breath! Â For you plant-based ethical/healthy eaters for whom I write (and for whose intelligent and thoughtful reviews I am quite grateful, thank you!), there is not much here unless you want to drink your dinner (not a bad idea considering the massive selection). Â I was sad to see someone refer to the "angry vegans" group from Berks: we are not angry -- just concerned -- and marginalized. Â I sometimes get the mushroom quesadillas without the cheese, but they are lackluster this way. Â The corn/blackbean salsa is great though. Â I could eat a dish of it. Â Sweet potato fries are also available. Â Sorry I can't say more about the food. I'd love to see them add guacamole or an avocado quesadilla and pickled veggies to the menu. Â Give me something to snack on, and I will gladly give you my money.
Lambics, champagne-like sour fruit Belgians, are sometimes on draft, and several others are available by the bottle, nice!  It is great to sit outside in good weather (unless people smoke near you).  Once we saw kittens running around outside and should have found out if they were spoken for -- I don't like to see domestic animals near a  road, too many bad childhood memories! Â
The bathrooms need to be improved, unless you love the smell of urinal cake, cough! Â I rarely see the big dining room open, but I don't really go here on the weekends. Â The dark bar area is appropriately English-pubby. Â They sometimes have trivia nights, and I'm not one for games/competition when trying to relax, but we fed enough answers to the young couple near us to help them win, so we got one of their free t-shirts. Â My favorite game is Eat Drink Talk... Â :-)
This is one of my favorite bars! We go here after the Tiki Bar usually, but recently ate here for the first time. It was amazing, and for being almost 11pm, I was impressed. Still serving a full menu! The atmosphere is cool, and the outside seating area is now bigger than ever. I wouldn't say better than the Tiki Bar, but DEFINITELY an alternative or comparable...especially if you don't want to cook your own food  =)
Review Source:Ok, I'm biased. Â This is my drinking hole. Â But I'm also really picky, so the simple fact that this has become my drinking hole of choice means it gets 5 stars. Â The staff knows their beer. Â They ALWAYS have something new, and when I come in, Amber and Justin know how to hook me up with something new.
It's a little out there in the middle of nowhere, but worth it. Â The food is good. Â They DO get busy sometimes, but it's worth the wait if this happens. Â The only negative is that they don't take credit cards, which I know can be a big turn-off. Â But they do have an ATM inside.
Tuesday is half price wing night. Â Expect a little wait to be seated. Â I was a little pissed that we had to wait 30 minutes for a table outside while the entire time two whole sections, or about 15 tables were "reserved." Â We were there for two hours and the only people that occupied these tables were two men who sat on the far end, a business meeting perhaps? Â Either way it was uncalled for. Â
Service was OK. Â Food was good. Â Atmosphere great!
This place is huge and it looks like it is growing. Â They have an outdoor stage for bands that play on weekends, mainly Sunday nights I am told. Â This is better than the Tiki Bar by far!
