LOVE the free parking! One of the few restaurants you can park outside of in the downtown area without paying $5 and up. The decor was really cute, and the service was great, but i'd kind of hate to see this place on a busy night. The table next to us wasn't being overly loud, but the way sound bounces around in this place I could barely hear my table companions. Once they left we were good. The food was pretty good - good enough for me to go back and try something else. I had the Pimento Mac & Cheese, which was really creamy and perfect the way mac & cheese should be with a little kick! The apricot iced tea is worth mentioning, so be sure to order a glass.
For anyone who is interested, they can customize several of the menu items to either be vegetarian or vegan. I like places with options for everyone!
FINALLY my husband and I had a chance to try Vault after hearing so much about it. Â We both really enjoyed our meal, the ambiance and the service. Â
So first, the ambiance: Â The Vault has a very retro feel. Â We were seated upstairs on the outdoor patio that had fun colored chairs. Â The space reminded me of the Wonder Years but perhaps a little more trendy. Â Initially I was a little turned off because it didn't seem all that warm and inviting but it grew on me. Â
The service was relaxed but really on point. Â As we were seated upstairs, our waitress had to run downstairs each time we needed something. Â However, despite that inconvenience for her, she was prompt and never forgot anything from our multiple requests ("can we get some tabasco please?" Â "another round of cocktails!" etc). Â Also, she had some great menu suggestions!
The food was fantastic. Â We started with the quinoa cakes. Â We weren't expecting this to be a star dish but it seemed like it would balance out the fattiness of the rest of our order. Â However, they were delish! Â They did actually seem healthy and still had awesome flavor and texture. Â Next we had the pimento mac and cheese and the pan-fried portobello. Â The mac and cheese was pretty good. Â The portobello was AWESOME. Â It was really inventive, meaty and wholesome. Â It mimicked chicken fried steak but WAY better (from what I can remember of chicken fried steak). Â The mushroom came atop fluffy mashed potatoes accompanied by some basic veggies and a delicious gravy. Â We ended with the chocolate bread pudding that you MUST order. Â It's really large, so be sure to share.
So overall, we really enjoyed it and highly recommend the Vault.
This place is called "The Vault" and let me tell you...they can lock me inside and throw away the key so long as they keep giving me food! This was our first visit to this restaurant. We went in for dinner with a friend and had a great time. The style and decor of the place is really fun and unique. PLUS, (and this scores big points in my book), it's a place downtown that you DON'T have to pay to park! Everyone rejoice!
Okay, so down to the food. I ordered a BBQ chicken sandwich with a spinach salad. It doesn't sound extravagant, but what came out of my plate was very exciting and elegant. The spinach salad had goat cheese, apples and candied walnuts. Those flavors together are so amazing. The sandwich itself had "natural bacon", which I had never had before. It was almost a cross between a pork rind and bacon. For bacon lovers, this is really amazing and tasty. The chicken tasted great, just like the organic chicken from Elote (the owner's other restaurant). I would have given this place a 5th star if I had gotten just a little more meat in my sandwich and if the prices were a little cheaper. The entrees are pretty steep, but I understand you have to pay more for organic, natural foods. OH, and it might just have been that it was 120 degrees that day, but the Apricot Iced tea was very delicious and refreshing.
Bottom line, go make a withdrawal of food from this place, because you will be happy you did!
A bar that used to be a bank in the 1950's? Sure, I'll break in.
With crafty cocktails and a well stocked bar plus menu items like pimento mac and cheese - I'm so there.
I've been lucky enough to be invited to a couple parties in the Tom Tom Room which is located on the second level. The room is closed off from the rest of the restaurant and is complete with hip seating and it's own bar. If you want to host an event with and have happy guests and cool photos come out of it... I highly recommend this spot.
I'm usually more of a craft beer gal but I am inspired to try a different cocktail whenever I visit. My top picks so far:
The Crooked Banker
Mai Tai
Oaxacon Old Fashioned
For lunch I sing the praises of the spinach salad. It is so fresh and the goat cheese and apples dance on my tastebuds. Dinner here for me is eggplant mousakka. This is such a healthy and satisfying option that pairs nicely with every drink I've tried.
Please don't tell my friends I haven't watched Mad Men yet... I know when I finally get sucked in, I'll love this place even more with its retro vibe!
I came to eat here twice. Â I love this place. I had the tomato bisque/macaroni lunch special the first day, and the second day had the salmon with the squash and kale. Â Both were just fantastic. Â The apricot iced tea was so refreshing. Â
I especially love the Mad Men feel to it-our server on day 2 was a Peter Campbell (pre-marriage) look-alike. Â This place is a real gem in Tulsa!
This restaurant looks like it's straight out of the show Madmen! A vacant Art Deco building that was originally a bank (hence the name) has been renovated to house this hip new restaurant.
Pros
-awesome design
-won't break the bank (no pun intended)
Cons
-the food isn't bad, it's just that the menu doesn't match the restaurant's sophisticated style. they need MORE menu items, especially some that are geared towards foodies. I find it kind of sad when the waiter recommends the pretzel rolls to me...
I'd be pleased if they expand the menu to offer some more out-of-the-box options.
Until then, I love the concept, but it needs a little refining.
I have hit The Vault up a couple times now and think it is a nice option downtown. Â It has a good vibe, cool decor, and some unofficial entertainment as you watch wait staff climb the spiral staircase in the corner. Â I have had some mediocre experiences with the food though, including this past trip described below.
Ordered the Pickle Flight as a starter, which ended up the highlight of the food. Â As simple as it sounds, pickled carrots, celery, other veggies, and eggs. Â I have no idea whether they are made in house, but a nice, uncommon palate cleanser none the less.
Second course was the Hearts of Palm salad that was, ironically, void of hearts of palm. Â There were a few small palm clippings, but not a single substantial piece large enough to stab with my fork, let alone enough to name the dish after them. Â I don't know if this fault is the result of cost cutting or an oversight, but it is the second time I have had this problem here. Â Otherwise the salad is great, with avocado, onions, and a (coriander?) vinaigrette and it has, at least once in the past, been chock full of the more interesting ingredients.
Entree was the fish of the day, an Ahi tuna steak. Â I was not asked how I'd like it cooked, so I assumed seared and pretty rare was the default. Â It came out about medium which is a little done for my taste but not bad. Â It was also smothered (or maybe drowned) in chimichurri sauce - a powerful flavor that probably needs a steak to stand up to it. Â It was served on a bed of grits, which were a great, mild contrast and nicely cooked. Â Along with some sauteed greens, tomatoes, and squash, which like the plate itself, were drenched - and I mean swimming - in olive oil (or oil based sauce or maybe it was part of the chimichurri and the solids separated out). Â When I finished eating there was still a pool of oil and everything left on the plate was shimmering. Â Not very appetizing and a little concerning from a healthy eating standpoint.
I hate to judge as I am just an eater. Â But to the chef, if you read this, just dial it back a notch and let the main ingredients speak for themselves. Â I like this joint and downtown Tulsa will benefit from this mid-priced, upscale food.
P.S. great drinks, great staff and bartenders.
Amazing atmosphere and very good food. The stars of the restaurant are the cocktails. They come in adorable, vintage style glasses and they are made with high-quality ingredients. I came here with a group of 13 for a party, and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our waitress had no issues splitting up the bills, and she was very nice and helpful. Very enjoyable. I'll definitely be coming back!
Review Source:I was really excited by the gorgeous space and comfort food menu, but it's all for naught. All of the cocktails we got were terrible and the food is deeply, deeply mediocre. Does anyone even taste the food before it leaves the kitchen? This location deserves so much better. If you're going to buy a place that pretty, make sure you can deliver on its promise.
Review Source:The food is NOT great- menu looks like a coffee shop menu. Â The menu is also full of drinks, I am sure the bar scene is good- but my food was horrible. Â The slider buns were like hockey pucks. Â Chicken was way over-cooked. Â Wait staff was lacking as well. Â Too bad, this place has a really cool vibe, Â there is no attention to their food- but then maybe they don't want to.
