Great service, tasty and inventive drinks, but $18 for one drink??? Are we still in Cleveland? Even in fancy LA mixology places, drinks are usually less than that.

They also have a hidden back room and patio area that would be pretty sweet for private parties.

Also located in a suburb looking area. So if you feel like you're lost, you're probably going the right way.

Glad I tried it, but won't be back.

I ADORE this place!! It's a little hidden gem in Tremont.
The decor is very turn of the century without being overdone or presumptuous. The jazz band that plays is at the perfect volume and so soothing. They have the best drinks I have ever had, by far. Just be aware, you do pay a pretty penny for the drinks, but I think it's worth it!
The staff was great too, they seemed to really be a team. We had a few servers taking care of us, including the hostess. Everyone was so personable, felt like they were all friends!
They have some couches and chairs in the middle room and they seat random people together there. We loved this! We made some new friends there and hope to see them there again.
If you have never been to this place, you are missing out.

PS - don't let the raw egg in a lot of the drinks scare you away. It makes them so frothy and creamy!

With all of the out of this world reviews of The Velvet Tango Room, I had some super high hopes for the place. My verdict: Good, but based on novelty. Let me explain.

I didn't find anything wrong with the place. Nope, not one thing. The unmarked exterior, the dark and cozy interior, the service, the drinks. All of it was good. But I found nothing absolutely remarkable about it, nothing that makes me want to come back, even. I know, I know, this sounds like crazy talk compared to what everyone else has been saying, but I really don't get it. Sure, the cocktails are made to perfection and they're priced accordingly, but I honestly felt like I've had a more enjoyable time and beverage elsewhere. I won't name names to create a rivalry, but I just didn't get it.

But the novelty of the place that made it enjoyable is really my kind of thing--in theory. The whole secret door/room thing is awesome. The speakeasy vibe is...there, but nothing like I expected and I honestly felt a little disappointed that the "act" wasn't really upheld by what I found. It was definitely a relaxing and nice bar, but I didn't feel like I had been transported back in time and I think that's what I wanted. The bathroom has really cute little postcards in it for souvenirs and the lounge couches were really nice (though the comfort and darkness were about to put me to sleep).

See? No real complaints, but it just kind of flopped in my expectations. I will say that I'm glad I finally made it here and that I can say I had a VTR cocktail. I will also say that I think everyone should try at least one just to understand the goodness of the craft.

Finally got around to trying out VTR when some family was in town so we stopped in to check it out after dinner. I'm going to have to agree with the majority of the 160+ people who've already reviewed the VTR. This place rules, period.

Service: outstanding. When we arrived, there weren't any tables available, just two seats at the bar. Since there were 4 of us, the hostess said we could start out there and she'd give us the next available table. At some places, this would be a blow-off and you'd be forgotten with half of your party doomed to stand throughout the visit. Not here. We only had to wait about 10 minutes before a table opened up.

Drinks: Anyplace that has this large and well-thought out of a drink menu is bound to have some good stuff. I love that they have lots of classic cocktails as well as a TON of VTR original creations. Everyone was quite satisfied with what they ordered.

Value: The overall experience and uniqueness of this place coupled with the outstanding quality of anything ordered here, makes it completely reasonable to charge $18 per drink.

The absolute only thing I'd change about our visit was the music. The piano man was very talented and gracious, but at times, I found the music to be too loud. (guess I'm too old :) But loud enough to seem intrusive rather than a subtle addition to the experience. I can't take a star down though since this is the only time I've been here and otherwise this place is just SO awesome.

    A must-try.

Wow, just wow! And all these years I thought I've been drinking cocktails at those fancy martini bars and restaurants! A friend and I were having dinner around the corner in Ohio City during the week and decided to give VTR a try afterwards. We walked in and were greeted by the bartender (or shall I mixologist), we sat at the bar in order to have a front row seat while she was working her magic. I chose the India fizz and my friend enjoyed the Kady-Kid (or some variation thereof that name) and both knocked our socks off! My cocktail was made with fresh squeezed juice, spirits and an egg white and boy did that egg white make the most frothy deliciousness I've ever tasted.

Impatient people beware: your drink will take time to make or craft rather so don't expect to shimmy up to the bar and have a drink in hand within a minute. We came on what seemed a slower night with only 2 other groups of people in the whole place and it took about 15 minutes, what can I say, you just can't rush perfection. The bartender was very knowledgeable and was  more than happy to make suggestions based on what flavors we typically enjoy and while she was making our cocktails she  shared some fun booze facts.

Alas, be prepared to pony up almost $20 for your cocktail but as with most things in life quality trumps quantity, I'd take one India Lime Fizz over 3 vodka/sodas any day!

Easily the most memorable bar experience I've ever had. The drinks are expertly made and tasty to boot.  You Don't just order the standard gin and tonic or rum and coke. They have specialty cocktails that will transform the way you see and taste alcohol. Most people (Including me) will be overwhelmed looking at the depth of their drink selection. But trust me when I say that I haven't had a bad drink yet and I've probably had close to 20 so far. I'm trying to work my way through the whole menu.

While the VTR is most certainly pricey($18/drink regular & $10/drink during happy hour) it isn't meant to be a place where you go out and have drink after drink. (That's what the breweries down the street are for)

If you are able to make it during their happy hour you get free bread and cheese and drinks are nearly half the price.

    Viva la Tango Room!

If this isn't the single best hidden gem in Cleveland, then I don't know what is.  Tucked away in the middle of nowhere, Velvet Tango Room is one of my favorite spots to stop every time I come home.  The vintage prohibition style cocktail lounge that you need a GPS to find has the best drinks I've ever had in my life, but one in particular sticks out: The amaretto sour.  Before VTR, I never thought I'd drink anything with raw egg, but the waitress convinced my friend to try it.  After one sip of hers, I was hooked and have to get one every time I go.  And whatever you do, don't skip the cherry...that's the single best piece of fruit you'll ever eat!  I've tried to find a drink that's even half as good in Chicago or Columbus, but no luck.  VTR's amaretto sour still reins supreme.  Not that they don't have plenty of other awesome drinks too...the dark n stormy, fizzes, and french 75 are some of my other favorites that will rock your world.

At $10 a drink, the steepest price you'll pay in Cleveland outside of a sporting event, this place is worth every penny.  Huge drink selection, very knowledgeable staff, great atmosphere...the only downside is that sometimes there's a wait.  I recommend coming with a date (perfect romantic atmosphere) or a small group of girlfriends (you'll feel just like Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda).  And if you go around Christmas time, they serve homemade Egg Nog when you walk in for free!  Also: this place LOOKS like a dive from the outside, but it definitely isn't...while I don't think there's any dress code, I recommend wearing something nicer so as to not feel out of place.

Heard a lot about this place so my wife and I decide to check out the hype. Place has a hard to find, masked house - bar look. Live music was a nice touch. Drink menu is very extensive but the prices are straight out of NYC. $18 for a drink...ouch. Had to try a few though as they sounded tasty. Drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and were not bad but definitely not worth $18. We collectively had 4 drinks and after tip cost me almost $100. Maybe in NYC but in Cleveland?

I stopped in late yesterday evening for my first visit on my way back to Columbus after an Indians game.  Upon entry, I discovered I was woefully under-dressed vs. the patrons at the near-full bar. Nonetheless, the bartender greeted me warmly and helpfully pointed out the sole empty seat at the bar.  The people sitting on both sides of me were engaged in deep conversations but we eventually connected.  They weren't at all snobby. I ordered a VTR Manhattan, which was OUTSTANDING, however I was glad I only had one because the drive home was tough. This very tasty and potent concoction really augmented the buzz I was already carrying from the two Burning Rivers I had at the Jake!

I definitely try drop in again next time I'm up in Cleveland.

Absolutely amazing place... a walk back in time to the 1920's.  Great live jazz on the weekends and phenomenal drinks.  I've been here a few times and have ordered a half dozen different drinks... all vastly superior to anything I've had anywhere else.

    Among my favorites are the

    -Negroni-
"With an herbal, citrus nose, it's bracing and unique, made not to disguise the flavors but to celebrate them. It's Campari and Plymouth gin, along with either our own Tango reduction "vermouth", or Vya, a small batch sweet vermouth. Finish is a flamed orange peel."

    -Sidecar-
"Created in France in the 1920s, the Sidecar became a signature drink for the Hemingway ex-pat crowd in postwar Paris.  Two parts Cognac, one part Cointreau, one part lemon. These are the perfect proportions of this classic cocktail."

    -Pisco Sour-
"Made with white grape brandy from Peru, dusted with Vietnamese cinnamon and punctuated with aromatic bitters. Tangy and completely unique."

    -Housemade Eggnog-
"It's a poorly kept holiday secret that the VTR has the best eggnog in town. Perish the thought of those cardboard cartons in the dairy case - ours is enticingly frothy and wonderfully spiced with a mixture of brandy and dark rum. Made according to the owner's own recipe. Especially festive during the holidays but, at the VTR, we're happy to make it for you any time. "

    -Ginger Drinks
"The enigmatic owner of the VTR has a minor ginger obsession. Unsatisfied with blandly cloying ginger ales, so began a quest to develop his own high-test ginger beer, subtly sweet, with a generous dose of heat and full bite of spice. His proprietary ginger beer is like nothing else."

They have a limited menu but serve a nice assortment of cheese and meat platters.

This is truly a great place to escape to with friends for a fun evening.

Is this place expensive?  YES!  It is over-priced?  Perhaps.
However, when most bar clientele consists of morons in sweatshirts and stained baseball caps screaming at a TV and "ladies" who just "wanna parrrrrrrty" , going to VTR is such a breath of fresh air!  You are treated like an adult; you are surrounded by class and maturity!
My husband & I can't afford to visit VTR very often, but it a treat every time!

Wait! Did I walk into a bar or a re-run of Mad Men? This place looks like the early 60's threw up all over it. And I mean that in a good way. The entire experience was retro-chic. The decor is spectacular and the doorman and servers are all dressed to the nines. The only thing missing was a scantily clad Cigarette girl. Damn!

The drink menu is extensive, so you might to take the easy route like I did and ask the server for recommendations. Our server did a fabulous job matching me up with the perfect drink. It was like <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FE-harmony.com&s=57762e52aa0ed283d67cf837bfe0c1767d77f54fbe3f4f4d88fa7ade0cf83c19" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://E-harmony.com</a>..... For booze. My drink and I were made for each other. My Highball was strong and delicious. My hitting coach in college always said, "Andy. you're a low ball hitter and a highball drinker". Talk about irony.

Here's the liquored up bottom line: Sure, the drinks are a bit pricey, but all things considered, its well worth it. I will make time to hit the Blue Tango room on every trip to Cleveland. Yes folks. It was that damn good!!

Do you like Cowboy style popcorn-crusted popcorn chicken superbanged with jalapeno gravy slaw, and served with Velveeta drumsticks!?  ME TOO!  So go Velvet Tango Room.  Be sure to axe for a trough of southeastern Serengeti mulch glaze.  (They don't serve that entree, but I just wanted to say "superbanged."  And Velvet Tango Room is awesome.)

Now that you have a great feel for what Cleveland is like, can you explain to me why anyone with any sense whatsoever would pay $18 for a craft cocktail here when the Pegu Club

    -AND-
    the Alembic
    <a href="http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-alembic-san-francisco">http://www.yelp.com/biz/…</a>
which are famous cocktail bars sell them for half that price?

Must be the cost of real estate in Cleveland vs. NYC/San Fran that makes them charge so much, no wait you can buy a house in CLE for the price of a VCR so that can't be it.

The clientele is made up of douchebags so immense they look like caricatures that regular douchebags had drawn of them at Cedar Point brought to life.  I think that's more of a condemnation of Tremont than this place, but it enhances the enjoyment at any rate.

    FUCKING STUPID CLEVELAND!

I love this place. Their coctails are second to none, but you pay for them.  I would recommend one, but the bartender will do a better job.  I can say that I have never been dissapointed with one of their drinks.

VTR is good place to start the night, and much classier than anywhere else that is nearby.  If you are in a huge group, this is probably not the pace to go.  I don't think I'd stop in with more than 5 people, but I always like to stop in.

There is an old line about a Fool and his Money that would suit this establishment as a name better than VTR.

As a former bar and restaurant manager and possessing over of thirty years in the service industry, my experience here was entirely mundane from product to service to atmosphere.  And at $18 for a cocktail, I need to be summarily impressed.

Simply the most over hyped establishment I have ever encountered.

My whole experience at the Velvet Tango Room left me really underwhelmed. With the multitudes of 5 star reviews I was really expecting more. Honestly, I just don't get the hype. Yes, my cocktail was cool, I think it was a apricot fizz or sour? It was tasty and I've never gotten egg whites in a drink before, but the ambiance of this place really left my friends and I feeling flat.

The Velvet Tango Room wasn't the swanky bar we were expecting. It looks like someones house right down to the bathrooms, sleepy time jazz was playing and we had to wait for a table to be seated. The menu is pages and pages of stories describing the cocktails, which makes ordering a bit overwhelming especially when your server/ bartender is telling you that you have to order now or she's going to take another table's and won't be back for 15 minutes. All this adds to the feeling that your being completely overcharged when every cocktail on the menu is a flat $18. Now, I've been to some really cool cocktail bars in Miami and New Orleans so I can understand $10 even $14 for a fancy drink, especially in a fun, swanky bar with good music, but $18 at a stuffy house "lounge" filled with old people? I don't get it.

This place has an atmosphere and way of doing things that can only be described as self assured. The mixologists have carefully honed their art and produce some of the best cocktails I have ever had. In their recipes, they manage to be innovative without being trendy. As a result they have all the classic martinis and some new twists that complement and enhance them.

The live music is also wonderful. Truly great professionals grace this speakeasy.

I highly recommend the Tango Manhattan. It incorporates a lovely red wine reduction that is really a treat on its own. There don't seem to be, though, any bad choices.

Best Drinks in the Country!!! Yes, I really think that and also truly believe that too!  Great Bartenders too!  Everything that could be said has already been said but if you have not gone here you are really missing out.

My favorites are the Moscow Mule, Old-Fashioned, and their own Manhattan mix.

BTW, No draft beer or cheap drink specials here.

So trying to go here on a Saturday night with a group (even a small one) at about 9:45 pm may not be the smartest idea. But they get you seated relatively quickly (like 30 mins) and the drinks are still a-waitforit......... - MAZING!!!!

Best Old Fashioned by a mile and then some....

Also, deserts. Try their deserts. Amazing Gelato - chocolatey with mini chunks of amazing dark chocolate. YUM!

We rolled up to a dark part of town, and I wasn't sure exactly what to expect from the Velvet Tango Room. Certainly not the cushy furniture and live music that welcomed me as I walked through the door!

While I only sampled one beverage, a heftily-poured old fashioned, the drink list was incredible and I had a hard time narrowing down to just one. Should I ever make it back, I'd love to try their whiskey sour and bloody mary.

I don't know why I am just getting around to reviewing VTR. I guess its partially because I don't want anyone else to know about it. And, really... you wouldn't if you were just driving past. Off the main path in OC, and next to a really run down multi-family home, you'd never expect this place.

Walk in and take a step back in time. Every mixer, every cocktail, made by hand. Behind the bar - artists. They are not bartenders... they aren't "tending" anything. They're creating art.

I don't really want to tell you more, because I never want the regular OC crowd to think they can infiltrate the place. But, the truth is that you probably never could. Paulius runs a tight ship. And, you have to know someone, who knows someone, who knows Paulius to really find the secrets about this place. ;)

The Velvet Tango Room, or VTR for those In-The-Know (like I be), is one of the best damn bars in Cleveland and earns 5-stars for music, drinks, and the setting-individually. So, I actually give this place 15-stars #humblebrag

When a buddy of mine, a VTR regular, suggested we go to the "Velvet Tango Room", not knowing it was a martini bar, I thought for sure I was going home with glitter and spray-tan clinging to every fiber of my clothes and the night would end with vases being thrown and divorce papers being signed. (Side note: we only have one vase and it was a wedding present).  I'd say the only attribute which earns the VTR less than 5-stars is the surrounding neighborhood which, if I was ever in a shoeless bind but I happen to have my trusty 40-foot ladder nearby I could win the "Random Shoe Lottery" played at any of the local power lines.

When I entered the VTR it lacked (but I didn't miss) the clientele I was used to from other bars I frequent.  In place of the local crazy person who never sits down and shakes everyones hand while walking out, just to return mere moments later to scream at everyone there was a row of friendly middle-aged couples wearing business suits; in place of the usual table of bikers who have given up on life's ambitions after their 3rd and 4th DUI's, at the VTR you find a group of 30-something men, also wearing suits, laughing about the money they're making (like over $10/hour!!); and in place of the 60-year old woman with the undesirably low-cut shirt putting quarters in a jukebox to listen to music nobody cares about, in the corner there's a live jazz band that immediately makes you feel cool and realize you have an old soul, requesting Dave Brubeck.

Barring the convulsion you may feel to vodka because of your college drinking days, now even a whiff kills the strongest of buzzes, it is IMPOSSIBLE to order a bad drink at the VTR.  Everything is homemade, fresh, and tasty.  To say you feel first-class while drinking at the VTR is an understatement.

To prove my point I found myself in the following conversations during my first visit at the VTR:
    1. Never flying commercial.  Because why would you ever want to sit with poor people while you partake in the miracle of flight? Eck #ammirite
    2. Yachts: Spellcheck is the only reason I know how to spell that word, for those unfamiliar it's a boat for rich people that sinks less than poor people boats.
    3. Shopping in Dubai:  I always imagined shopping in Dubai was: "What kind of sand/ oil do you want", turns out it's more like: "Sir, will you want a diamond jacket with your dragon skin shirt? Because we actually found a dragon, which is super rare, killed it, and made a sweet shirt out of it?  Diamond jackets go perfect with it."
Well, regardless, I felt like the 1% for one night, thank you VTR.

Bottom line: the band was awesome and they're the best martinis in the city.  Nuff'Said.

I've come here on a few occasions and I realized I haven't reviewed it yet! I've always thought very good things about this little Room. It's hard to find if you don't know where it is or haven't heard of it...It's just on a street all by its lonesome, with nothing else around it. So with that said, the outside isn't that impressive.

But the inside...takes you back in time. The decor literally brings you back like 50 years...Baby grand piano in the back..and if you get a chance to see that room in the back they have, it's awesome!

Now, onto the important stuff: the cocktails. I've only ever ordered a select few cocktails here, the Moscow Mule being my all time favorite. They sure make it well here, well worth the $14 a pop. I see them whip up the cocktails in a snap, but there's so much detail put into each one. And then when you taste your drink, it's nothing less than perfection.

And that brings me to its one drawback. The price. No, I can't afford to spend $14 on every drink I have and I most certainly won't allow myself to do it all the time. For the occasional celebration drink, yes. I love it.

The Tango Room is one of the finest bars in the country. It is also superior to any place I've been in Europe, which leads me to believe it is one of the finest in the world.

If you're a first time visitor or are otherwise unfamiliar with cocktail artistry (both craft and consumption), feel free to have a good time reading the menu, but consult the bartendress to determine which drink would be best for you. If, by some stroke of bad luck, you don't like what you've ordered: Exchange it for something else.

Ultimately, it is understandable if some people don't end up enjoying their drink or their experience at the Tango Room. Preferences are not exactly rational, so there will be people that dislike this brilliant little haunt on Columbus.

Some people will think that their drinks aren't worth the price tag, or will complain about paying $18 for a drink whatsoever. Without thoroughgoingly waxing philosophical/psychological on this scenario, and wholly delineating the attitudes, circumstances, and indications of such, I will simply note: People generally don't take issue with the price of something unless they can't afford it. If this is your angle, at least have the decency, as one reviewer did, and admit that your income level is part of the issue, and that concern over the price of anything is not independent of personal income considerations.

"At the end of the day, don't be fat." -- Italian guy I met at 3am outside the Andaz Hotel in downtown San Diego.

After visiting the Velvet Tango Room it has become my new goal in life to move to Cleveland and become a lush spending all of my time (and money) absorbing the fabulous atmosphere and beautifully crafted cocktails at VTR.

The appetizer we tried was a sweet, savory and salty treat that went amazingly well with the perfect cocktails. The table behind us had the table-side prepared bananas foster, it was a delight to watch it being made.  The live music was perfect, not too loud and a great accompaniment to conversation but also good enough to stop and listen to.  VTR is not cheap, but it is worth the price.

Hands down, the best drinks in Cleveland.  Nothing else needs to be said.  Yes, they're $16 (unless you go during happy hour, then they're $10), and yes, it takes a minute, but if you're in a hurry to get a crappy drink go to Applebees.  If you want an absolutely delicious, hand crafted from homemade ingredients, one-of-a-kind cocktail, then sit down, relax, and enjoy the live jazz music while you wait.  We Clevelanders are incredibly lucky to have this gem in our midst.  It can get a little crazy on the weekends, but there are few places as relaxing and laid back on the week nights.

Also, just as a point of reference for people who complain about the price, these drinks aren't easy to make on your own.  I tried to buy the three ingredients needed to make one of their cocktails (the Widow's Kiss) and it was going to run me $130 for three bottles of liquor.  One of their other drinks, the 9th Ward, requires an ingredient that you either have to make yourself or buy from the one distributor that sells it in the country.  When you think about that, $16 isn't so bad.

The staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable.  If you don't know what a certain ingredient is, they'll let you taste it beforehand.  A word of warning: they don't tolerate rude people, so don't snap your fingers in anyone's face and expect it to go over well.

It's classy, relaxing, and delicious...you can't really ask for anything else.  If you want to try something different, go for the Widow's Kiss, Ninth Ward, Cleveland Rose, or Last Word.

I could not have had a better night.  Granted, we got the totally hook-ups from the owner with a private room tasting but even "pre-drinking" cocktails we had in the front of the house were outstanding.

The staff is so knowledgeable about their products, the history of the drinks and how the flavors mingle together.  I will definitely need to spend more time here.

It is amazing that this place has been here for 16 years.  You would never know it from the outside but the inside has so much charm and character.

The owner is a true gentleman.  Offering us way more time than he should of and making sure our every request was attended too.  He has stories and tales to fill a million trips to the bar and I wish I could hear everyone.

You are stepping back into another time and place.  Bring your bracers and fedora and come along for a wild ride.

I heard about this place for years! The location is a little of putting! but you get past that relatively quickly. THe 1920's style speakeasy knocks the ball out of the park! Starting with the Doormen, dressed to the nine's! We rented the back hidden room! For my sisters 50th birthday party! Which you needed a secret code word to get in.

The entertainment, atmosphere and outdoor patio were all incredible. The appetizers were well appointed and refreshed throughout the evening.

The bartender and bar back were dressed for the 1920's era. The drinks were great albeit expensive.

Cleveland you have really done a incredible job with this establishment, to the owners great job! Can't wait to visit again!

I felt like I was in another place and time when I walked into VTR for the first time, and I have been enamored with the place ever since.

I'm more of a beer gal than a cocktails gal, but VTR puts that distinction in serious jeopardy, real talk. I especially liked that the bartender didn't ask me what I wanted, she just asked me what I like. She then picked the perfect drink for me, and of course made it perfectly. Drink-making is an art here and anyone who says otherwise doesn't know what art is.

On the downside, I think that there's pretty much no chance of me ever finding a drink somewhere else that will live up to the quality and craftsmanship that I experienced here. That's not a negative for VTR, just my life :-D Oh well, I guess I'll just have to keep coming back!

    Come here! That's all!

I wonder how many secrets are told at VTR every night? It's the kind of place that invites you to curl up in a corner, order a top notch cocktail (they don't mess around) and chat the night away with a group of friends.

I had no idea what to expect prior to coming here, so I was a little surprised when we pulled in fairly residential looking neighborhood, to find VTR located on a somewhat barren block. Based on it's surroundings, I think I was anticipating a cool dive bar - slightly run down, with plenty of charm and novelty.

Not at all the case. Instead I found a cozy, clean and classic lounge with plenty of comfortable seating and sheltered nooks to find refuge in. The cocktail menu is extensive and reads in an encyclopedic way, with plenty of historic detail and information. Perfect for novice drinkers and old pros alike. There was also a pianist in the far back, playing a few relaxing tunes in background.

Oh but wait - turn left, pump your brakes.

They are also well known for their phenomenal pickles, which are served in their Bloody Marys. They sell these suckers jarred, garlic or spicy. You'll have to ask about this if you're a pickle sucker like Snooki since there was absolutely no indicator of this, other than word of mouth.

But yea - craft cocktails and pickles. Come here for either or both!
