Review Source:Oldest VFW in Texas!
This place is truly amazing!
Situated right along the banks of the newly-expanded River North project, where the Riverwalk extends north from downtown.
The decor is old military stuff, with two giant Howitzers sitting out front. The air conditioning is always at full blast indoors. It looks like the place used to be someone's mansion, but it has been beautifully restored. Victorian architect buffs will love this place!
The prices are cheap. The beer is ice cold. There's often live music here, especially stuff filled with accordions!
The staff is beyond friendly- they were super nice. The patrons are welcoming, and I know I'll certainly be back! This place is awesome!
This place is rad! Â My BF is a VFW member and we stopped in while out on a bike ride and loved it. Â It is accessible from the River Walk and you don't have to be a VFW to visit and drink there.
This was my first time at a VFW and getting to visit the oldest one in TX was pretty fantastic. Â The service was friendly, the beer was cold, and other patrons were a lot of fun! Â
You can rent out different portions of the old house for parties and they have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Â Might be having a party there in the future because the balcony is huge and has a really nice view of the river.
Super cool spot located right off the newer section of the River. Â With a few new hotel projects and other goings on I am sure this part of the River will still be new, but not as tranquil as it usually is.
VFW Post 76 is an awesome place to stop for a quick beer or two while strolling, bike riding or basically taking in all SA has to offer. Â There are some neat markers outside on the River and a few outdoor art installations under the nearby bridges.
Our first visit was during the DTA Tour, a few daytime stops have rounded out our experiences. Â Great music on the juke box, plenty of seating, a nice cold beer selection too. Â There is not much shade outside, and man they do have their rules - but the place is awesome.
Space for party rentals too. Â
If you are feeling totally chill and low key, this is your place.
Great place to meet up with a group and enjoy cheap beer outside on picnic tables by the river. Â Gets crowded on the weekends, but there's plenty of room to stand around if there aren't any tables. Â Usually live music or DJ's spinning good tunes. The bartenders are always friendly and attentive.
Review Source:If you're looking for an authentic, unique San Antonio beer joint visit the VFW. Â You can get to it from the touristy part of the Riverwalk or walk down from the Pearl - all by river. Â It's a pleasant walk from any direction. Â Large outside picnic tables for groups and beer geeks be prepared bc they will not have the IPA of the month - but they will have a bucket of ice cold cuuuuerrrrs leyet for you. Â Love this place for it's history and resilience to change.
Review Source:There is always something nice about historical sites that sell beer. Now I'm usually the one that drinks craftbeer, however, there is a time and place for an ice cold Bud Light. The VFW is that kind of a place. It's great for hanging out with a couple of friends or a whole group of people.
I dropped in on a Saturday and it was packed. The crowd consisted of older people, more than likely many whom were Veterans. Nonetheless I still had a great time. Lots of friendly people to chat it up with and enjoy a cold brew. When you go in, be sure to check their board sometimes they have special events going on. In fact, June 2nd of this year they have a Taco Truck contest.
By the looks of many, many other amazing reviews, there's not much I can add about this perfectly divey, perfectly haunted, perfectly touristy spot on the banks of the San Antonio River.
I will say this is a great location to throw an outdoor party which would include bringing your own bottle or BBQ.
Jolly great times are had here on a regular basis and if you happen to be cruising your bike or walking after dinner, check out the architecture. You may even see a ghost!
This is a five-star dive bar. If you're looking for a five-star lounge, restaurant or club, this is not it. But if you want a comfortable, interesting, friendly, relaxed place to have a beer, VFW Post 76 is what you seek.
The VFW post is on the river walk's museum reach. It can be accessed by river barge, or if you're driving you will find it two blocks west of 10th and Broadway, just a mile north of downtown.
The post is housed within a Victorian home that is 100+ years old. The place reportedly is haunted (but I've noticed since moving to San Antonio that pretty much every place in town is reportedly haunted). Â The bartender who served us has been there for years and swore she once clearly saw a ghost near the posts' bathrooms.
At the VFW Post you can sit outdoors at picnic tables or can find room indoors at the bars or tables. The place has frequent events, and we were told you could bring your own liquor to the outdoor concerts (but not beer or wine since they sell that). Â
VFW Post 76 is the kind of place where you sit on well-worn chairs, strike up conversations with the strangers next to you, and enjoy good, cheap beer. When we visited, we found the patrons and employees equally friendly, and they were happy to share their favorite nearby restaurants.
This is a nice place and we'll be back. But be forewarned, if you want a "nice," clean and plush experience, you'll want to go elsewhere. Â Leave your pretensions at the door, and you'll enjoy VFW Post 76.
Wow....just wow.
If you've visited other VFW's besides this one, you'll understand why Post 76 is remarkable. Â Open to the public - and in a breathtaking Victorian mansion right on the San Antonio River - it's a true departure from the norm.
Unlike many of the other reviewers here, though, I stopped by with the simple goal of rehydration in mind: I'd parked upriver, had strolled down to this point - a perfect location to revive for the remainder of the distance down the entire "museum reach" of the Riverwalk.
So yes, it's a really lovely old structure, with very friendly people in and around it. Â I didn't ask for a tour - or get one of their reasonably-priced beers: instead, I purchased a canned soft drink with a cup of ice, for $1, then meandered back outside.
A seat on the veranda was tempting; blaring music, however (on this evening it was 70's band Boston, not Tejano music), caused me to choose a seat farther away from the overly-efficient sound system.
Chatted with a few of the "regulars": one, a lady there with her family, bade me welcome to the VFW; another, sipping beer with his two friendly dogs (" Liberty" and "Justice") in attendance, gave me a quick history lesson about the history of water recycling with respect to the river (I never cease to be amazed by the number of longtime San Antonians willing to share knowledge of their city with noobs like me - too cool!).
I left rather reluctantly, having spent more time there than I'd intended. Â I'll be back, though, soon - and perhaps next time, I'll indulge in one of those bargain-priced cervezas, and some of the fresh popcorn!
This place has soul. Came on a Saturday night when an oldies band was playing. Let me tell you, the dance floor was hopping! There were a couple hundred people there and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The house is huge and sits along the river, so it's a great location for some outdoor dancing. The inside was kind of dingy, but what do you expect from the oldest post in the state? The beer is cheap and the staff was friendly. I will be back!
Review Source:Disclaimer: I came here at the end of the night last week after, um, voraciously celebrating the Oktoberfest kick-off with some friends. Yeah, that's what we'll say...
Regardless of my state, I do remember that the beers were cheap, the people were friendly, the ambiance was awesome, and the Tejano was plentiful. I twirled and twirled on the dance floor to Selena, and it was the jam. I'm pretty sure I made a fool of myself, and I don't even care. I'm totally coming back here again!
Buckets of 6 Lone Stars for 10 bucks. Cheap!
When I lived in San Antonio I didn't realize that just anyone could come here. It was always a mysterious place tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac. So I'm glad that my friends took me here while I was visiting town. Great place to see some bands play outdoors. They have conjunto and oldies acts--check the listings.
I love this Bar - It makes me a jolly good fellow !! Â And that is a "honto" !! Â This old Mansion was giving to us by the Petty family of San Antonio and when you see it - you step back in time as if you were on a Georgia Plantation with Rhett Butler !!
This is the oldest Veteran of Forign Wars Post in Texas, made up with a lot of the Spanish/American War Rough Rider Vets after the The Big War (WW I). Â It is OPEN to the Public because of it's historical presense in our great city and it has a ghost to boot "Charlie" !!So come on down for the buckets of beer (cheapest you will ever find), wine song & ladies !! Â You can BYOB also - there is great bands & music on weekends and an array of great friendly folks to share good times along the riverwalk extension ( heck - take a boat ride up & back ) - the boat coxiins know the site well !!
Sam, Carla, Norm, Woody.... the gangs all here and everyone knows your name.... at least thats what it feels like. The building outside looks like it just survived the civil war... but the beer is cold and the view of the Riverwalk is great... and nothing beats the fresh FREE popcorn.
Review Source:This is the kind of place you go if you're in the know. Â You'd never suspect a VFW post would be one of the most fun bars you can visit.
The new Riverwalk Expansion has opened up a whole new world of business to this place, I'm sure. Â I had never been until I noticed it while jogging down the river one evening. Â Music was blaring along the banks and people were out partying. Â My friend and I decided to cut our run short and go see what was happening - if only all training runs ended like this I bet the world would have TONS more marathon runners.
What we found was one of the most fun nights of my life - and yes, I was wearing spandex pants and tennis shoes the entire time. Â We stayed for about a couple of hours and had a Lone Star or two (beer snobs beware this is the type of place you drink cheap American beer and feel happy about it!) and made some great friends. Â I learned some new dances and got a secret tour of the inside of the building, which was amazing. Â
You've got to go if you have the chance. Â Just, um, maybe take a hint from me and wear normal clothes. Â Though the spandex running pants were quite the conversation starter...
If you are from San Antonio and haven't been here then turn in your residency card- this places oozes a San Antonio vibe. Even if you don't enjoy the Tejano or Oldies  that fill the air on the weekends (I wouldn't like to meet the person who doesn't BTW,) come here after a hearty meal, watch the sun go down along the Riverwalk and enjoy the ambiance. I've exposed family and friends to this gem and have been pleasantly surprised to come upon them later without my presence.
In New Orleans I drink Hurricanes, Miami I drink Mojitos, but here at the VFW Post 76 I drink Lone Star. All the beers that they serve here always come ice cold.
My advice for a perfect spring weekend: arrive here as the weather cools and sit outside. Invite people to come and watch their faces light up as they recognize the uniqueness and strange familiarity of their surroundings.
The old VFD is definitely a place to check out if you've never been. Â Which, up until the river expansion this year, most people haven't. Â The VFW "canteen" is one of those places you kind of what to keep a secret, one of those places that if you learn about it then you're kinda "in the club". Â So, I guess I have mixed feelings about this place being "discovered" by so many folks due to the expansion, because I fear it might lose some of it's charm and mystique...or perhaps not. Â More the merrier!
So, I'll get on with this review and share what I do know about the place. It's a cool place to just chill out with folks and kick back a few. Â You can hang inside the mansion, which is said to be haunted, or enjoy the fresh air outside on any one of the endless colorful picnic tables. Â When they have events it can get a little crowded but generally speaking the crowd can be comfortable to thin...depends on the night. Â Note: even though they have set hours, if it's super slow they will close early on occasion.
The beer selection is pretty basic but still a good place to hit up. Â Oh! I almost forgot to mention the complimentary popcorn! Â I just think it's cool 'cause I like to see it pop. Â ;)
VFW Post 76 should be experienced...if for no other reason, then because it's the oldest post in Texas. Â That's gotta count for something, right?
VFW Post 76, we salute you!
I've been here once before but the other night I swung by and let me tell you...the oldest VFW post in Texas was bumpin'.
So it's right where the Riverwalk expansion is and it's really pretty down there now. The post is huge. I mean....it's a mansion so of course it would be but the area in front of the house is mighty large. It really makes you feel like you're at a plantation except this plantation is blasting Tejano music. The drinks are really cheap and the people are amazingly nice. I agree with Maxwell, this is a great place to take an out of towner.
It's hidden back off of Avenue B right on the new Riverwalk expansion. The cheapest all-American beer in town and a friendly, but rowdy crowd. This is the definitive spot to watch a Spurs game. It's also a great spot to take out-of-towners. And hey, as the neon sign will tell you: it's the oldest VFW post in Texas!
Pro tip: If it's a slow night, and they seem to have taken kindly to you, see if they'll take you on a tour of the place, specifically including the attic. It's well worth the price of admission!
