Below satisfactory service and average tasting foo - not particularly good for larger groups.
The scenario - reservation for a group of 16 on a busy Saturday evening ~6pm. Warning - be prepared to be there for at least 2.5 hours! The table was ready as scheduled, but everything else was slow. Had the waiter recognized he needed assistance early on, all might have been spared cold food, long waits for refills, and excessive time for checking out and lack of charge explanations.
The food - I ordered soup as an appetizer and a Reuben for my entree with steak fries and ranch dressing for dipping. My soup came out with everyone's meals. I had our server send it back. His explaned that all hot items were being served together. I think he made that up becuase other people recieved their hot appetizers (japeno bites and fried pickles) ahead of time. My food was served hot. My Rueben was a decent Rueben - nothing special and too little thousand island dressing. The steak fries were nicely crispy, but needed more ranch dressing. However, most guests ordered the prime rib. While no one sent it back for being under or over cooked, many guests complained that their food was luke warm, including their prime rib, mashed potatoes or sides. When we asked for extra bread (seriously only 12 pices for 16 guests!), the one who asked was charged extra!
The bill - It took at least a half hour from the time the last guest finished eating until the waiter brought the first check. He failed to inform guests of the most common curtesies - 18% gratuity, and extra charges for items. The waiter didn't feel comfortable just giving us our checks, he gave us "pre-checks" (and another time delay). These checks didn't include the gratuity (which is expected with large groups) - so many guests paying cash had to calculate it themselves. For those paying by credit card - it was unclear that it was already included since we had one itemized bill sans gratuity, and one final bill non-itemized. Also, I received a charge for the side of ranch and another guest was charged extra for requesting more bread.
The service - Slower than molassis. He didn't even attempt to keep up with water refills and never once did he ask if anyone needed a refill. Instead we had to ask everytime we saw him. He never thought to take surveys of the table and see if anyone else needed something. He could have avoided a lot of back and forth. I'm not sure if it's Wendell's policy that all waiters act independently, but he seriously needed some help.
I"m not likely to return, unless another group decides this is the best meeting place.
Its an ok pub / restaurant that attracts locals for lunch, family dinners or a drink after work. The menu is surprisingly generous and they have a variety of food to offer. I've ate here a few times and nothing sticks out as amazing or horrible, just average food. The service during lunch time is adequate and I had no complaints.
I've drank here after long days at work and the crowd around the bar seems to know each other pretty well. Its not a bad place to get a cheap beer and talk / hang-out with a co-worker or friend. They close super early for being a pub.
I don't come here for the food and when someone is smoking on the patio, I go inside to the bar (be warned; you can't get away from it no matter where you sit on the patio). Â
BUT, I do continue to come here for the service, the happy hour (which starts BACK up again at 9 p.m.) and the patio. Â The service is consistently friendly and I dig that. Â The menu isn't amazing, but it isn't trying to be amazing. Â The crowd here is also interesting(?) -- certain times of the day the average age of the patrons is 67 yrs and at other times its 37 yrs. Â I think the older crowd stops by after their 18 holes and before 5 p.m. mostly.
The happy hour menu is limited but the pricing is good. Â All of it tastes A-OK paired with a cold beverage on the patio, served up by a smiley server.
I have been here 5-6 times. Whether at the bar with a friend or in the dining room with a party of 8, I have always had good service. This is a pub, do not expect gourmet veggie burgers. Expect great apps, cold beers (love the Great Lakes selections), and amazing fish. Their fish puts anything else in Columbus to shame. I don't know if the manager is an ass, but frankly based on how good all of my experiences have been I don't care.
Review Source:Service bad; food worse.
Went there with my family on St. Patrick's day. Took a long time to be greeted only to find out that our waitress was held up from another table that was complaining about the food.
The waitress asked us if we wanted the fresh brownie plate for dessert. Having to young boys with us, that sounded good. We specifically asked if the brownies were made fresh and it they were served warm. She said "yes"; twice!
Needless to say, we received a plate of what looked like gas station brownies thrown on a plate with trying to be decorative whipped cream arranged on the plate. They were hard and cold. Nothing fresh and warm about these at all. When we pointed this out to the waitress, she said "oh, I'll take it off the bill."
The only good thing about our meal was the Shock Top (even though it took 12 minutes to get it).
We will not be back. Just gross
*FYI ON WHY THE RATING IS LOW* People have been complaining about the service and the food. I've been to Wendall's Pub more than 4 times and not once have I had bad service by the wait staff. ALSO FYI if you go to a PUB do not order a veggie burger its a PUB its not a classy upscale joint that does great veggie burgers that consist of ANYTHING BUT meat.
The ambiance of Wendell's Pub is that of an Irish Bar that is blasted with tons of plasma TV's and people. Ever weekend Wendell's is packed as well as most weekday nights. You need to plan on a 20 minute wait just to get a table. The people that are here are usually older (mid 40's and 50's) with children. The menu has a lot of great choices, but their best food is the REAL pub food.
When we arrived at Wendell's we were seating right away, which was nice. Â We were served by one of my brothers classmates, she was cute, nice and very helpful to catering to our every need (aka we asked her on different occasions to bring extra Ranch and Tarter sauce).
My brother and I both ordered the "Ultimate" Cheeseburger and we both added bacon to it for extra fee. My parents both got the fish and chips (Mom just got regular portion, Dad got the all you can eat special). Personally, I am not a fish person at all, but I will tell you what my parents thought about it. The fish they use for the fish and chips at Wendalls is Atlantic Cod and the batter they use is very flaky and nice. They said that it was great and my dad got two portions.
The now bacon Ultimate Cheeseburger that my brother and I had was exactly how I like it, medium and was juicy with the perfect outer crust just how I like it. The fries are the amazing steak fries just like Red Robin's fries, they are some of the best around.
If you actually read the other reviews for Wendalls you will see that these people obviously were going to Wendalls to save money and they mostly got food that is unique to Pub food. Get the Pub food here, don't get the veggie burger and if you want good service from the staff always be respectful and kind, bad service happens sometimes so please don't let this deter you from checking out Wendall's Pub.
Wendells used to be a favorite lunch spot for my coworkers and I. We had noticed drop in food quality and service over our last several visits, and had also had a very bad experience with one of the lunch waitresses, LORI. On my most recent visit, I had ordered a sandwich that used to be on the menu ( a hot turkey with provolone) and asked specifically that it be hot because I am pregnant and can't eat cold lunch meat. I picked up from LORI and took it back to my office to eat. SURPRISE---NOT HOT, NO CHEESE, AND IT HAD HAM! I called back to ask and LORI told me she checked my sandwich personally and that it was a special order, but she said they would make it again. I told her I ate the chips (again, I am pregnant) and she said they would give me more chips. So I went back again (had to leave work, again) to get my food. She said she checked it and was offended when I checked. NO CHIPS, so LORI stomped back to the kitchen to get me chips. I got back to the office and she gave my fries instead. I called back to talk to management and that is when I discovered the real issue with Wendells. JACK SHANNON! I explained the situation and he was not apologetic. He accused me of ordering fries the next time and refused to apologize for it. He said that he would only apologize for the sandwich the first time but not for the chips/fries issue and got angry when I mentioned it. He said that there was nothing he could do and that he could not help me. He said quite angrily that next time I came in I could have a free sandwich, I just had to ask him. All I want is a sincere apology. Just an "oops, we screwed up and we are very sorry." I will never ever eat there again. Niether will my coworkers and friends in Westerville. I hope that no one that reads this review eats there either. With all the delicious restaraunt choices on Polaris, I will not struggle to find a better lunch spot. And if JACK SHANNON reads this, was the $6 dollar sandwich worth it???
Review Source:The food was not as bad as one star but the experience was! I was angry when I left and felt ripped off! It started off alright when the waitress told us we could get the happy hour prices even though we had a coupon from http://restaurant.com, so we went for the meatloaf sliders for my son and the loaded potatoe skins. The skins were fine, the sliders gross and I really did not like how they rounded all the prices up. $3.99 turned into $4, $7.99 into $8 and so on. Sure, its just a penny but they did it for all the menu items and added 20% gratuity which was over $10 for our meal and I felt they did not deserve. I couldn't decide between a side salad which could be added for $1 to any meal or a full size one and when she told me the full size ones were huge and twice the size as the side I went for it and my husband just got a side salad. Well it turned out the side salad was TWICE the side f my full size one at $8 so I sent it back and she said she would send a manager who refused to come to our table but took it off the bill and charged us an extra $1. The house dressing was very good and my husband enjoyed his reuben. The fries and onion rings were cold as was my portabello mushroom burger and veggie burger. I am a huuge fan of homemade veggie burgers but this was way worse than paying $10 for a frozen boca or morningstar burger. I don't know what was in it, but there were no veggies, no rice or beans, it was gray and covered in cornmeal. All I could taste was flour, cornmeal and dryness and all they put on it was sour cream which didn't help add any flavor, I did like the pretzel bun it was served on though. Then when it came time to pay they told us our bill was only $49 before tax and in order to use coupon we had to spend $50. I told them I did not want to order anything else and they said then they could not use my coupon so I settled on brownies. They were fine but I was full and did not like being forced to order more. Then by the time tax and gratuity was added on we ended up spending over $60 for mediocre bar food and lousy service. I was upset all night and really wish I could have talked to a manager, I will NEVER return here again!
Review Source:The best fish and chips in the Columbus metro area! My husband is British so he knows fish and chips. The service has always been prompt and friendly, and unlike a previous reviewer I have never known Wendell's to be cold inside. It's sometimes a little noisy right around the bar, but there are plenty of tables on the other side of the restaurant for people who want to have a pleasant meal.
Review Source:We were out to celebrate my brother's recent graduation and passing state certification exams, so his choice was to go somewhere local and he wanted prime rib. We went to Wendell's Pub on a Friday night (their advertised prime rib night) and found the place to be pretty busy, but not more than your typical Friday night. We were greeted at the door by more than one stumbling drunk middle-aged patrons. Interesting for 7:30pm, but we went in anyway. We had a 20 minute wait that was no big deal, we were able to sit on a large bench in the entry way. The hostess was great and accommodated our request for a booth, there were 4 adults and a 2 year old in our party. We were seated and that's when it all went downhill.
10 minutes after being seated our waitress finally decided to make her way to our table. She bypassed the typical "Hi, welcome to xyz, I'm Jane blah blah blah" greeting and went for the slamming down of a pile of silverware and napkins option. She then began to count out place settings-out loud. Her first direct words to us, "So is there going to be 5 or 6 of you or what?" The hostess had mistakenly grabbed 5 menus along with 1 children's menu. I told her no, just 5, that it was an extra. She huffed, grabbed it up and told us to" hang on a few minutes." 10 minutes later she returned to take our drink order. Pretty simple: 1 Pepsi with lime, 3 waters and a chocolate milk. She returned some time later with a Diet Pepsi (sans lime), 2 waters and the milk. She went to get the other water and came back with a lime wedge on a napkin that she tossed on the table. I asked for a regular Pepsi and got the reply "Oh I'm pretty sure you said Diet, but ok," She returned with the regular Pepsi and disappeared for another 10 minutes.
When she came for our order, my husband started and asked for prime rib. She told us they ran out-it was only 8:30 pm and the kitchen doesn't close until 11. In previous experience, if I've gone to a restaurant who's advertised special has run out, that's almost always the first or second thing out of the server's mouth, not the case here. 3 of 4 adults were going to order prime rib, so we asked for a couple of minutes to look over the menu again.
When she returned she did say she was sorry, at which point my mom told her it wasn't her fault, it was just surprising to have run out so early. The waitress told us she knew it wasn't her fault.
At this point we had been in the restaurant for over an hour with only a botched drink order to show for it and an insanely rude waitress to boot. My brother decided we'd probably be better off going elsewhere for dinner. But he wished to speak with the manager before we left. He asked another server if he could speak with the manager because ours disappeared again. A few minutes later, as we're all standing up to leave, the manager made his way over. The only purpose of even speaking with the manager was to ask if running out of the special happened often and to let him know about the terrible service. Well, it was soon obvious that service is not a priority at Wendell's. As soon as my brother mentioned prime rib the manager turned to walk away and said, over his shoulder, "well, you can just get out of here and go have yourselves a bad evening somewhere else."
We did exactly that and actually had a good evening with great service somewhere else. We will absolutely never go back to Wendell's Pub. We had heard good things about the food, when you can get it, but the incredible rudeness of the waitstaff and management doesn't make even the greatest food worth it. Who goes out to dinner to be treated like
I've been to Wendell's a good many times and decided to go back with two others for lunch today. The food at Wendell's is usually pretty good. I have had their fish and chips for dinners as well as their chicken wrap and their salad. The wrap always comes with your choice of fries or chips. Today I decided to try something different and went with a basket of their chicken wings. The wings were good, but I was kinda let down as they didn't have too many toppings to choose from, though.
The pub is fun and has a great atmosphere with good service and friendly waiters. Their restrooms are also very nice and clean. The bar is well- stocked too. The prices are kind of high at times, but it really depends upon what you order. I was paying for three today and it only came to about $30. It was worth it.
Wendell's has always been consistent for good service and decent pub food. I was a frequent visitor during my Otterbein days. After returning recently, I'm happy to report not much has changed. I usually order the southwestern chicken wrap or taco salad. Sometimes you just need a tried and true place and Wendell's is just that. Oh, and a few years ago their bathrooms were rated the best in America.
Review Source:Uhhh... thanks but no thanks. Â We checked this place out yesterday because I had a http://Restaurant.com git certificate. Â Upon walking through the door, it pretty much felt like I was still outside. Â FREEZING. Â Now, this being said, I am pretty much always freezing. Â But my flip-flops-and-shorts-all-through-the-winter dining companion was also freezing. Â I did mention it to our server who said it "felt fine to her." Â Uhhh, okay. Â I never took off my coat or scarf the entire hour or so we were there.
I ordered the Black Bean Veggie Burger sans sour cream. Â It came on a "pretzel bun" with salsa. Â I didn't want fries, so I paid $1 more to get about a half cup of obviously straight out of a Green Giant bag steamed veggies. Â While I could appreciate that the veggie burger was actually made in-house, it was definitely made with pinto beans, not black beans. Â It was also pretty soggy and the watery salsa on top complicated that issue. Â
My friend ordered the Sirloin Steak Sandwich, which he said was "good."
Also, there was some sort of repair or pest guy wandering around the dining area the entire time we were there. Â A little weird...
So, I think the cons are pretty obvious. Â
Pros: Â Reasonable prices, GREAT service -- our server was very nice (even though she was apparently not cold), drinks were promptly refilled, and our food came quickly and accurately after we ordered.
Also, I have a great appreciation for a CLEAN, well-maintained restroom and Wendall's definitely had that going for them.
All that said, the cons still outweigh the pros and I don't think I'll be going back.
Tried Wendell's for the first time today. We got carry out, so I can't comment too much on the service; however, I can honestly say they have the most deliciously wonderful chicken tenders I have ever tasted. Seriously amazing.
Also ordered the steak salad - again delicious.
They bill themselves as upscale casual dining, which I'm thinking is accurate based on menu options/prices. They've got lots of salads, sandwiches, soups, appetizers,, etc., pretty typical pub food. Basic wine and beer selection and looks like a new menu is coming soon.
