My boyfriend and I tried out the White Owl last night when we were in search of a new sports bar to catch a College World Series game, and we will definitely be back. Â There is plenty of parking in back (always a worry for me because I suck at parallel parking, judge away), the TVs are large and well-placed, and the atmosphere is laid-back. Â
We sat at the bar, as usual, and were taken care of by a friendly and attentive bartender (I don't remember his name, but he rocked). Â They have a bigger beer selection than I anticipated, and we discovered a new favorite - Sam Adams Grumpy Monk. Â We also shared a plate of chicken nachos that were basic (chips, grilled chicken, and three cheeses), but still delicious. Â
The only thing preventing me from giving White Owl four stars is the fact that we didn't try any "real" food. Â If the rest of the menu is solid, I can see updating my rating.
I guess its good there aren't zero stars, but on reflection, they probably deserve one star, because the food is decent.
That said, the reason I gave one star is that when we went Saturday for brunch, the music was so loud, you couldn't speak to your neighbor. And I'm not talking just a little loud, I'm talking front row of a Kings of Leon concert loud (and I speak from personal experience).
Not sure what they're aiming for, but whatever it is, I didn't like it Â
Don't go for brunch unless you like screaming to be heard and missing 90% of what the rest of your party says. It wasn't always like this, so I asked the waitress. She just shrugged. Either she didn't know why it was so loud, didn't think that it was loud, Â or couldn't hear me.
We left after an hour. Â Would've liked to stay for another irish coffee or two, but by that time I had a throbbing headache and felt nauseous.
I like White Owl a lot. This was consistently our happy hour spot the first year I lived in Tulsa. I have to say though that I hate their food, I am always like yuck why did I waste the calories? But, on a total 360 their brunch is great! For some reason they make good breakfast food and awful real food. I like their omlettes and breakfast burrito. Also mimosas are $10 for a carafe. Good deal! So go for brunch or to just drink and enjoy!
Review Source:Came here last Wednesday night for Game 6 of the Thunder/Spurs series for the first time and was impressed. Â The bar itself has a long galley feel, maybe 25 feet wide at most with a long bar on the right, and tables along the left with bench seating along the wall and high backed chairs elsewhere. Â There were plenty of big flat screen tv's scattered throughout the bar, so every seat has a good view. Â I did not order food on this visit.
I was with a group of 14 friends, and there appeared to be only one server for our table and the three tables next to us, which seemed like a rather high patron to server ratio, and it showed in the beginning. Â However, once she learned our drinking habits, the wait time decreased substantially to the point she was bringing out fresh drinks before the older ones were emptied - great job on the service.
The bar itself has a solid selection of alcohol and beer, and the alcohol pours were very good. Â I ordered a single Maker's neat and the rocks glass was nearly full, the price certainly did not reflect the amount of alcohol, I was quite happy with the result.
Overall this bar receives 4 stars from me. Â A great little sports bar on Cherry Street.
UPDATE 6/13/12: I went back on 6/12 for Game 1 of the Thunder/Heat series and tried the food. Â I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries, and it was good. Â The menu stated that the pork was rubbed in garlic, but I couldn't taste it anywhere. Â The fries were good and hot, but a very small portion. Â The price was good for the overall experience. Â This place had a great atmosphere for the game, and I'll definitely come back.
Love this place! This is my second favorite bar on Cherry Street. Great prices and good service. Multi-storied which is a plus if you don't want to feel cramped into a tiny room, and they have a great patio area outside. Food is good too. Try the sweet potato fries with honey mustard.
Review Source:Went for an early meal on a Tuesday night. Â My reuben was great - good portion and tasty. Â My wife's crab cakes were just average. Â Server was pleasant and efficient. Â Beer choices were fine, including Boulevard brand from my home town of KC, MO.
TV's were on, set to a variety of stations (all sports related) but volume was turned down so they weren't obtrusive.
I'd definitely go back for the reuben.
White Owl is a pretty solid bar. Â They have a decent beer selection and the food is better than average for a drinking establishment. Â
The service at the bar is good. Â The bartenders aren't generally that friendly but they are attentive and don't leave you with an empty glass. Â If you don't sit at the bar expect to have some lag time in getting a chance to order your next drink...but that's the case at most bars.
It's clean and attractive and always a safe bet.
Nice place for a power lunch or after 7 cocktails. Â When school is in session it tends to be a lot of TU crowd in there and it gets loud. The waitresses are nice...drinks are strong and food is plentiful..I dont think I have ever finished a plate there...They give you so much food!. Great place to meet the girls or guys before heading out to a club or lounge.
Review Source:I love coming to this pub every time I'm in town. The waitresses are alright, but the beauty is in the drink specials. The margaritas are cheap and amazing. As far as food, everything I've tried has been delicious, but I love the tacos and spinach salad. There's nothing better in my opinion.
Review Source:Disappointed. Had $25 gift certificate I bought off http://restaurants.com. Â Was informed when I arrived that it was only good at dinner time, not lunch. Â Coupon had lots of exceptions on it that had I known would never have purchased it. But it says nothing about not being good for lunch. So we ordered a chop salad and veggie quesadillas and shared. Â Good food. But not worth the drive from South Tulsa. Â Nice pub environment. Now I am still stuck with two gift certificates that can only be used at night.
Review Source:Smallish selection of beer on tap (maybe 12?), a lot of which is local or old school standbys. Â A few more in the bottled department. Â Cool pin-up theme very good and prompt service. Â The food was.. well bar food so nothing outstanding there or any big suprises. Â Good place to hang out after a hard day's work downtown.
Review Source:I also have to give the barkeeps congratulations for defending a TV for me. It's frustrating to go to a sports bar and everybody wants to watch some local team on some local channel. I go to the sports bar to watch games I can't watch at home, and the bartender actually refused another customer's request to turn the TV I was watching, when every other TV was on a local game.
Review Source:My husband and I just moved here and stumbled upon the white owl Saturday afternoon. It might be my new favorite bar in Tulsa. Â We sat in the little outside area and it was really nice especially with the doors open. The service was good - even though we were the only people on the patio. We didn't have a full meal, just an appetizer which was good (fried zucchini). It seems like a nice, chill place to have a couple drinks.
Review Source:I came here for an early dinner before a downtown concert. Â The staff were very friendly and helpful. Â Even though people were waiting for tables I never had to look for my waitress to get a refill. Â
The food we tried was awful. Â We tried the asian chichen legs which had way too much salt. Â I ordered the fish and chips. Â Very, very greasy. Â My wife ordered the sliders which tasted like the meat was old. Everything here must get fried. Â Plenty of leftovers should you want them. Â
Were having the beignet for desert. Â Even that is fried... Â
I know you're thinking I'm stupid to eat at a Pub and expect a whole lot. Â Really I'm not because I had my expectations set to moderate because it's a pub. Â All I was wanting was passable food with no late night trip to the emergency room because of food poisioning.
The service is great. Â Come for the beer it's a Pub afterall.
This is the second time I've been a patron of White Owl Pub. The location for this place is great for all the foot traffic on Cherry St. The waitstaff is attractive and tentative. There is a great selection of beer.
This is a place where the specials are never lacking. Each point of their menu is complimented by a special. Their fried oysters, when in season are amazing. Also, their stuffed ravioli is also very, very good.
Was a great bar with really attractive waitstaff and a good selection of beers bottled and on tap. Â The place itself is nice and you can tell the owner spent some money on the interior decor. Â One of the nicer looking bar interiors in Tulsa.
I will say that the food was very disappointing and was actually kinda dialed in. Â My BBQ chicken wrap at lunch today fell apart and spilled it's guts moments after trying to pick it up. Â The food menu is kinda sloppy and not anything to write home about.
Other than the food complaints, I am sure this is a great bar ti hang out at on a Saturday night. Â Good bar with a great selection of beers and is in a great location.
Yes, yes, I may be considerably obsessed with owls, but not necessarily White Owl Bar in Tulsa (even with all the cute owl decorations). Â Quite frankly, I miss the 15th St. Wok, which is what this used to be back in the day. The best Chinese restaurant in Tulsa sadly no longer exists and was replaced with a decent, meh kind of sports bar. Â White Owl is in a great location on 15th and Peoria on hip Cherry Street in Tulsa where there are tons of other good restaurants, coffee shops, and cute boutiques. Â
I imagine this place sucks and gets super crowded on Friday and Saturday nights, but for the OU/OSU Bedlam game and a heavy lunch with the cousins, my mamacita, and B and D, White Owl was A-OK. Â
It's a large bar with a large bathroom and more space upstairs. There are about 8 televisions, which were all tuned in to the Sooners vs. Cowboys game. Â Food was alright. Â I arrived with the fam to a half eaten plate of delicious cheese fries with bacon (compliments of Rebecca and Duane), which I picked at until Jana and I's nachos arrived. Â Cheese fries were definitely better than the nachos. Â My mom had a salami Panini which was probably the best of the bunch. Â The bloody mary's were strong and spicy (just how I like), but the service was pretty non-existent and the bar wasn't even slightly crowded.
White Owl has great beer selection and great food. Be sure to check out the special menu on the blackboard. Pizza is excellent, so are the nachos, tacos and sandwiches. It's a good place to watch football but very noisy so don't sit at the bar if you want to have an indepth conversation. They change the beer selection periodically and have good choices including some local brews. One of the few places in town to get beer from Coop brewery in OKC!
Review Source:When I wrote my last review it was based on the first time I went there and the first week they were open. Since then I have been back a few times and I really like this bar. The food is great and the service is very good. I enjoy the atmosphere and would recommend this bar to anyone looking for a place were you can chat and have a good beer.
Review Source:Food is amazing, we love the $5 pizza's on Sundays- and Josh makes some of the best drinks around. Â The Mac and Cheese is ridiculous, share it with someone as you will be ill if you try to do it on your own! Â TV's are great for the sports, and we appreciate the alley entrance. Â Actually, not a bad place for a small family to eat on the weekend. Â The only down side to this spot is the crowd can be a little smug and uppity on Thursday-Saturday night- but as for food, drinks, and service- A+.
Review Source:THE BEST CHEESE FRIES IN TOWN....
THE WEAKEST DRINK POURS IN TOWN
OK...so one great thing and one very very terribly wrong thing...hopefully they fix that.
The atmosphere is great, especially with the little outdoor patio. The rest of the food I tried was OK, nothing spectacular, but good for being in a place where you can hangout virtually all eve and late into the nite...that is a plus (minimize driving whenever possible)...plus it's a decent location...
I recommend for groups of friends looking for a slightly upscale bar that also serves decent food that doesn't taste like it came out of a microwave
I've been twice now and the food is average. A little pricey, but definitely stuff that is not on a lot of other bar menus. Personally, I enjoy the atmosphere. I enjoy a livelier atmosphere in my bars especially during games. The atmosphere is why I give this a four stars instead of two or three. If I had to break it down, I would give the atmosphere 4.5 stars, the food 3 stars the service 2 stars. Again, I've been twice and I can basically echo the criticism of the waitstaff discussed by others. The service is flaky, especially if you are not drinking.
Review Source:I figured White Owl would be good for another visit. Â I decided to go watch some food ball and catch a late lunch with a friend. Â
The service was so lame. Â How does it take 10 mins to get a beer every time I order one? Â They weren't even busy? Â I was 5 feet from the bar. Â This kept driving me nuts. Â
I ordered the Carne Asada Taco's which were pretty good. Â I got the Green Sauce and got a severe case of hickup's. Â Which drove me even more crazy because I didn't have anything to drink. Â I ended up going to the bar to get a water because I was dying. Â I don't regret ordering the taco's, because they were delicious. Â 3 soft corn tortillas piled with onions, cilantro, and carne asada. Â Yum. Â
Sit at the bar if you come here. Â The service will be better and you won't have a waitress that sucks at her job because she wanted to work a trendy cool place and really just be there to be seen.
I went again early on a week day, and once again, the food was great! The servers here are all very helpful & friendly...I had the broccoli & Â cheddar soup & it was wonderful. I always think any restaurant that can get soup right is usually right on everything else. I ordered the fish & chips & it was perfectly cooked....Not greasy at all, and very tasty. I wish I would have had room for dessert...I'm dying to try their beignets & also the creme brulee. There are so things on the menu that I want to sample. I will deinitely go back here again & again.
Review Source:i'm going with three stars until i try the food here, but as i'm going to completely agree with rebecca this is the new "hot spot" for tulsa. Â
And I am not into the trendy hot spots, i would love nothing more than to find the perfect little dive bar instead. Â I did go on christmas night which means anywhere is going to be busy, but come on i mean the majority of people in here were major assholes. Â I only went b/c i was dragged by some old friends i never see so i figured i'd give it a go but NO, not to mention i ran into people from years and years ago who were assholes in high school and still are to this day.
Last but most important: Â I don't know what source of music they have but it was almost all good if not all good, so coming here on a quiet afternoon or for happy hour could totally change my mind.
