I saw Jade Esteban Estrada in "The Agony and Ecstasy of Steve Jobs" and his performance was phenomenal! His powerful performance, which is accompanied by appropriate slides on a screen behind him, keeps the audience riveted on his every word. You'll never look at your iphone the same again. This show is a definite must see!
Review Source:I have been to the Woodlawn twice now. Once they were gracious enough to donate their space for the Vagina Monologues (kudos for that). During that performance they offered a two for one deal on the Full Monty tickets. I was SOLD! I am so happy to see that they rescued this theatre and are trying to bring it back! The front entrance and neon sign out front totally set the scene! The cast for the Full Monty was WONDERFUL and that stage props were out of this world for a non-profit! They did a great job on the production!
Here is my list of possible improvements for the theatre itself... the bathrooms were a little rough, they spent quite a bit on the sinks which were very nice but the paint on the walls but a little crazy and you can tell it has about 100 layers under it. Replace the floral prints with a few theatre posters and that will be an instant easy improvement. There is a what I suspect to be an  old neon light in the celling of the bathroom, get that back to working order would be a nice touch.  The seats are a little old, once they get some money in the bank it would be nice to see the old or vintage looking red velvet seats. Also I was a bit disappointed they didn't have the balcony open. I think they are using it for lighting instead but I think it could be a wonderful addition to add that.
I think there is a diamond in the rough here. The performance was wonderful and I see so much potential here! I have worked in the non-profit field for many years so I understand what they are up against with funding. Keep supporting this theatre and good things will be in the works, I know it.
I had such a good time seeing The Full Monty at Woodlawn! There's something about the old-school neon marquee shining bright out into the art deco district that makes me think about people in the good old days going to "the show".
This might be weird, but what stood out to me most was how roomy the theatre seats are. I was at a show at a different theatre just a few days before, and almost couldn't enjoy the show because I kept bumping body parts with my row mates. Not a problem at Woodlawn.
For your drinking pleasure, there were more beverages offerred here than at other local theatres - 8-10 beers, 5 wines, and sodas including Diet Dr. Pepper! They serve popcorn too.
As far as production goes, it's extremely intimate and everyone in the room gets a good view. Plus the band/orchestra plays at floor level, so it almost feels like a concert.
Support local theatre, y'all!
This theatre is doing BIG things in San Antonio!! I am experiencing this first hand because this is my first time to do a show at Woodlawn Theatricals!! I am enjoying my time there and would recommend going to see a show or even audition. It's so great to see such a huge part of San Antonio nostalgia being used in a outstanding and professional way. They are providing an opportunity for local actors to come and do some great things. Check them out!
Currently, "The Full Monty" is running through March 17th. There are also MANY other wonderful productions coming up!!
Ambience of movie theaters I remember growing up that I guess I should have expected. Â Went to see Full Monty and was impressed with all aspects. Â Small theater (rows A-L) so not a bad seat in the house. Â Quality acting. Â Good singing, but I'm not very critical of singing. Â Peeked into the other theater b4 the show, and it looked to be a good play venue. Â Hope to return as I saw a couple good shows coming like one on Steve Jobs' life and The Heights.
If there is an issue it would be no designated parking. Â Found a spot easily, after parking right next to the theater building and being told it was $5 by an ajacent business employee. Â All the tow signs posted at other businesses had me a little tenative in my search.
We saw next to normal, 9 to 5, and the rocky horror show this year at the Woodlawn theatre. The owners of the theatre have turned theatre around in San Antonio. These productions were close to broadway quality. Other theaters in town look amatuerish in comparison. The actors.and set, lighting were fabulous. However, the thing that impressed us the most was the sound quality, and the high level of skill of the musicians. Live music in theatre is our priority, and we will attend more productions if this level of expertise is maintained. Â Great job.
Review Source:I got to see rocky horror live! It was amazing. The actors got us fired up before the show started with some naughty fun games. We practiced doing the time warp, then two of the funnest hours of my life started! The cast was amazing and the audience did just as well with every shout out right on cue! The sexy parts were sexxxy, the creepy parts were creepy, and it was just all plain weird! I can't wait to go back soon!
Review Source:Went and saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show and it was awesome. Â The cast was talented and I was impressed to see actors of different shapes and sizes unlike television where every one is size 2. Â The ambience of the theatre was nice and they have concession stands that sale water, sodas, beer and wine as well as popcorn, candy and chips. Â They had an actual band that played along with the preformers and the set was very good itself. Â I can't wait to go back and see another play!
Review Source:I'm glad musical theater exists somewhere other than Manhattan. Â I feel fortunate to live in walking distance of the Woodlawn Theater.
My first experience was their final performance of "The Cure: A Vampire Musical." Â I was impressed by the fact that this was the first public production of this show. Â Some very talented folks put this musical together.
My seat, on the front row, squeaked but it didn't matter. Â The music was so loud, no one could hear my seat singing along. Â
I took a star off for the theater's appearance and my squeaky seat. Â The ceiling had some places where it looked like the roof leaked.
All in all, I want to see more shows there. Â I understand "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is coming back at Halloween. Â Count me in!
Just got back from our first show tonight and had to let everyone know about it. Â
For a local theater running their own productions, this place was TOTALLY awesome! Â The cast was not a touring cast but local talent instead. Â If you didn't read the program you wouldn't have known it though - they are simply that talented.
Even the sound, the lights, and the sets were awesome. Â I really have to give kudos to the group of people that are running this place - they have put a LOT of work into it.
Now for the boring stuff:
The theater was very clean, seats comfortable, bathrooms clean, staff friendly, and parking - eh, well parking is something else. Â We parked a couple of blocks down in the HEB parking lot. Â No big deal though. Â
They sell beer, wine, sodas, popcorn and candy in the front lobby area. Â
One final thing and then I'll wrap this one up - our original ticket dates were scrapped because my wife caught the flu a couple of days before the show. Â I called the box office and explained this and they made arrangements for my tickets to be shifted to a later date. Â Gotta appreciate customer service like that!!! Â
Keep up the good work WLT!
P.S. - Rocky Horror Show coming to Woodlawn Theater this October, 2011! Â You gotta check it out!
WAHT?! No review for The Woodlawn? wOw...well here goes:
I think it is fantastic what Mr. Pennington and his reconstructing staff/volunteers have done! Hoorah for local music theatre. They put on some pretty good shows and i have been enjoying them for the past few years. Little bit of hiccups here and there, but that's the resurrection business for ya (insert cliche about a certain capital of an ancient Euro Empire here). Anyyelp, i believe you should checkout the website and go see a production or two...or 5! Admission at the "door" ranges from 10-25 Bones.

Oh, and if you have a darling little musical theatre hopeful, take them there! They have tons of wonderful camps/workshops for the kiddos.
