I am here for work from Seattle, and had a few hours to kill between meetings. Â They have free Wi-Fi, which is a huge plus. Â I have noticed that Wi-Fi in Texas restaurants is not common, so it's nice to have a good connection. Â
I ate lunch, and the food was very good. Â Gotta admit, my expectations were pretty low; this area of Texas offers mostly fast food and large chain restaurants, but this place had a several items on the menu that seemed like they might be made right here in this restaurant... GASP! Â Â Everything was fresh, and service was good. Â The only thing that would make this spot a little better, are beers and sodas on tap. Â I will come back next time I am in town.
We went here for dinner last night. We were greeted and seated fairly prompted; but, that is where the service began and ended. The first thing out of our server's mouth was, "well, I guess I'll take you as everyone else is too busy." Â Had we been on our game, we'd have let her know not to bother and we'd have left. (Wish we had). Our food came out just as we'd ordered it. We enjoyed it. We had our glasses refilled once. Needed more; but, that's hard to get when your server is too busy visiting with others to notice your needs! Our server came back to our table exactly twice after delivering our entree's. Once, to fill glasses and next to clear the plates. We sat for several minutes watching her visit with another guest (who was not one of hers, BTW) @ the bar while we sat with plates pushed away from us waiting for an offer of anything further or the check. She FINALLY came over, took the plates, and then asked if we'd like dessert. We declined. We thought the check would then be forthcoming; but, alas, we were wrong yet again! No, she then went to another table (yet, again, not one of hers) to visit for several minutes while we just stared at her. Nope, she never looked at us even though I could have almost touched her! FINALLY, a new server who was shadowing our server (I know, right, this chick was also TRAINING someone - good Lord!) came and asked if we wanted dessert. We said, "no, that question had already been asked and answered". She then proceeded to wonder why we didn't want dessert. Trying to be kind, as she was new, we told her we just wanted a check that we'd been waiting for for over 10 minutes. Meanwhile, our server is STILL visiting with the same table nearby, just shooting the breeze!!! Â Seriously, it took longer to get the check than it did to eat the meal! On our way out the bartender/manager asked us how our dinner was - we told him what happened. Â While the bartender did attempt to do his job well, it would appear his taking shots with a customer and another employee while behind the bar might impair his ability to be on top of his game.
Suffice to say we won't be back! Just to make sure anyone reading this isn't thinking, "well, that's just a one-time diner, what do they know?". We eat out daily for lunch and dinner. We've been to high end and fast food all over the country AND we've dined here off and on for years. Last night's bad experience was the final straw in a long list of bad experiences here!
Excellent food and great atmosphere. Waiters are always friendly and helpful. The manager comes by to check on you as well. The roast beef sandwiches are delicious.
They also have a bar you can sit at and a separate party room. You get great value for what you pay for. Very relaxing place to dine.
We went here for lunch one day - very yummy food I thought. I got one of the specials of the day, chopped steak. I thought it was delish - and came with mashed potatoes and a dark brown gravy, which was good.
For lunch, prices weren't bad. I feel like I've been eating nothing but meat since I got to Texas... and maybe that's because.. I kind of have! No complaints here though, I love it. This place was a little bit pricey it looked like for dinner, but good to try at least once. On yelp, lots of people are saying the deviled eggs and mozzarella sticks were good here, but unfortunately I didn't try either.
Thursday night is ladies night & they have great drink specials and inexpensive appetizers.  My favorites are the smoked salmon crostinis  & the deviled eggs - who would've thought?
As for the regular menu, it's pretty good. Â My husband usually opts for the burger and fries while I tend to rotate between the salmon & the roasted chicken. Â The chicken is ALWAYS cooked to perfection & is more than enough to fill you up for dinner and have a full lunch the next day. Â We usually go there about once a month or every other month.
I've had a couple of business lunches here and I gotta say I'm fairly impressed. The lunch time crew is friendly and they have great customer service. Â Their homemade chips are really good, especially when you drench them in malt vinegar. I'll eventually make my way in here after work to see what they have on tap.
Review Source:My girlfriend and I decided to eat at Ye Shire tonight, on the recommendation of a few friends. Â Either we've just figured out that our friends have extremely poor taste, or the restaurant really wasn't having a good day. Â Frankly, and unfortunately, I think it's the former.
Ye Shire is situated in a surprisingly cozy strip mall (weird, right?) at Jupiter and the Turnpike. Â Parking is plentiful, and the lot is well-lit.
Entering the restaurant, a dichotomy becomes apparent immediately: the dark paneling and furniture are reminiscent of the comfortable local taverns of yore, but the high ceilings and bland, sickly-painted walls are very suburban indeed.
We proceeded to our table, where we were served by a young-ish lady who clearly had better things to do. Â When she asked for our drink orders, I looked at the bar and didn't see any taps... then, blast!, the young lady confirmed my suspicion: this "tavern" has no draft beers. Â However, they have a collection of bottled beers that I would classify as being on the low end of decent, and I ordered a Boddingtons and decided to be happy with it.
The high point of our dining experience was our appetizer: the fried mozzarella. Â Expecting boring fried cheese, we were delighted to discover a new approach: large hunks of creamy mozzarella, breaded with a thin, almost tempura-like coating, fried and served with ranch dressing and a thick marinara sauce.
I ordered the fish and chips for my meal, as I'd heard from our friends that it was quite good at Ye Shire. Â Unfortunately, they were wrong on that count, too. Â The fish was slightly undercooked and a little bitter (and, I'm really hoping I don't get sick overnight), and it was served with... not French fries but potato chips! Â Extremely salty, very thick potato chips. Â They were essentially inedible with the fish, although they may have accompanied a fourth shot of Jack Daniels for the evening reasonably well.
On top of all that, the final bill was insulting. Â The fish and chips was $16, my pint of beer was $6, and while I forget the rest of the prices, we ended up paying a total of $48 and some change.
Unless you're going to Ye Shire *just* for the mozzarella sticks, don't bother.
Our office had a little Happy Hour at this place, outside on a rare, pleasant Plano evening. This review is for the service and the appetizers since I did not have any beer or the standard dinner items.
Fried Mozzarella sticks here don't look like any I've ever seen. Thick and chunky, with a very light batter instead of thickly breaded (as per usual), these are terrific, with two sauces (my fav was the chunky tomato marinara).
They have these blue cheese chunk covered thick-sliced warm potato chips that you must try in order to expand that ever-widening waistline.
Finally, they had Deviled Eggs. "WHAT?" Deviled Eggs. "No! Really?" I telling you Real honest-to-goodness Deviled Eggs piled high with excellent classic flavor. What a nice change.
We were all very pleased with service and our time there and would recommend it again.
I have to agree with previous comments about this place. Â I went in there once and noticed there were no beers on tap. Â The decor was bleh. Â The demographic there for a Friday night was 65+.
It should be called Ye Shire Restuarant, certainly not a tavern. Â It did have a bar but there was no seating.
It could be mildly unfair to rate a neighborhood place I haven't been to in several years, but considering our high hopes for the place before it opened, and how thoroughly the Shire shattered our hopes after our first two visits, I felt I should save others the trauma.
We had hoped this would be our new neighborhood pub. But with no beers on tap (bottles only), how can it call itself a tavern? The atmosphere was not cozy, with no comfortable nooks, booths or places to hang out. All tables were out in the open, and all furniture on casters, giving it the aura of a retirement home dining room decorated in Ye Olde English style.
From the other reviews, it sounds like the food is good. When we were there, it was too expensive, pretty average quality, and had no pub grub appetizers made for sharing.
I can't say we didn't have fun, though-- my friend and I laughed our heads off for the whole 45 minutes we were there, at everything from the wretched music and beer choice to the big hutch on casters in the middle of the room, clunkily separating the bathrooms from the main dining hall.
In the interest of fairness, I would like to go there again and see if they have improved in the past few years. They're still around, so that says something.
If you're looking for a true pub experience, try the Fillmore Pub in downtown Plano. It's everything I had hoped the Shire would be.
The one good thing about this place is that I am pretty sure you can maneuver your elderly wheelchair-bound grandparents around without any trouble.
I went here to meet Aimee for lunch since she seems to go here once every other week or so and I was jealous I've never tried it so I made the trek.
The fried cheese was AWESOME as Aimee had said - and I saw some of the deviled eggs and they looked pretty tempting. I ordered a burger with cottage fries. It was good - cooked well, but my pickles had odd flavor and it was reallllly salty. The fries were cool - they were chip shaped french fries.
Downfall - cokes come in the small glass bottle you pour into a glass with ice. I don't want to pay for 2 cokes at lunch, but with food this salty I almost had to. That kind of annoys me so they only get 3 stars.
It's kinda far from my office, but if it was closer I'd probably go there more often.
Today was my third company lunch at Ye Shire. Â My boss is known by name and this is her favorite place to eat near our office. Â To the point that they actually looked at her weird when she ordered something different today.
I started a trend today. Â I asked for root beer and instead of it being Jones like previous times, it was Abita Root Beer... which is made with Pure Louisiana Cane Sugar. Â One by one my co-workers changed their Diet Cokes and Cokes to Root Beers. Â Yum.
We started out with appetizers. Â 2 orders each of the Deviled Eggs, Shrimp Cocktail and Lightly Breaded Mozzarella Sticks (OMG, best fried cheese I have ever had).
The boss ordered a cold turkey sandwich. Â She kept mentioning how fresh the turkey was... to the point of saying they probably had a few in the backyard to hit over the head with a baseball bat.
I've had the burgers and the fish n chips... but today I had a salad and I think I'm going to stick with this salad from now on. Â Lori and the rest of you Vegetarians... are you listening?
FRESH TOMATO & MOZZARELLA SALAD 9.95
Mozzarella & tomato slices over baby greens with extra virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and basil-buttermilk dressing. Â Um, YUM!
With my boss's love of Ye Shire Tavern... I'm sure I will have many more trips to this place for lunch. Â At least it's a change from the Pappadeaux we were going to way too often.
Owned by the same person as the Silver Fox steakhouse (Dale Wamstad), Ye Shire Tavern has outstanding burgers (second only to Goldies in Tulsa). Â Fellow dinners reported several of the other items to be good as well. Â Atmosphere is causal posh - you could go in nice shorts, or a tux.
