Lets start by saying the outdoor seating area is very nice in the summer time. Covered well, and has TV's. The bar however, is quite limited in the beverages they have. Apparently if i order a certain beer outside, and the inside bar only has it, i am out of luck.
The inside looks like it is out of a 70's or 80's restaurant movie. Interesting, but i am not the biggest fan.
The food is ok, but for what you get, a little over priced. I think the best thing on the menu is probably the onion rings. It comes out looking like they dump 5 gallons of onion rings in a basket, and the sauce it comes with is great. I would say that I am about 99% sure this is the most unhealthiest thing i will ever eat. Ok, ill just say it, it is the unhealthiest thing i will ever eat. But its delicious!
I would just recommend to go to the 99 restaurant about 5 minutes down the road. But if you want to stay away from a chain, and be a little different, try the ale house. Its meh ... not good, and definitely not great. But If i am home and cant think of a place to go, not afraid to swing by, and sit outside.
It's always bustling and crowded; however, I'm not the biggest fan. Â I've been to the Ale House three times and have never left satisfied.
The restaurant is very loud and has a huge bar that is always packed. Â Unfortunately, I've had slow service in all of my visits there.
As for the food, I've been underwhelmed in my three visits. Â The steak was overcooked and the fish and chips were all batter and no fish. Â While the pasta wasn't bad, it didn't stand out from what I can make at home. Â One item that I did find really good though was the chicken tenderloins appetizer, as the chicken was juicy and tasty.
I'm going to tell you, had i wrote this review 5+ years ago, it would be a lot different. I am a long-timer of the South Shore and i have been going to this restaurant since it was known as Teal's Cabin. Back then, there wasnt even standing room in the place.
I must say that The Abington Ale House has slipped in the last few years. I last went in this past December with my girlfriend, and i was saddened to see what it became. Perhaps it was the day and the time, but it seemed like there was nothing going on in the place for a Friday night. The waitstaff seemed to be distracted a little bit, and when got seated pretty quickly. The Bread, as Lynne B. discussed was not brought to the table, we had to ask for it, and our waiter didnt ask us for drinks while we waited too. I was shocked.
We got the Buffalo Chicken Dip appetizer, which was its usual goodness.
I ordered a steak and potatoes type meal and my sweet ordered a salad. We waited over 25 minutes for the meal to come out, and when it did, it was way off the mark. My order was wrong and even my drink order was wrong. My gf's salad was not right either, but alas, it was still an ok meal. That wasnt the usual style of AAH.
I say this as a long time fan of the restaurant, that they need an infusion of life into the restaurant there. Its obvious that the whole Route 18 corridor is in trouble if Vin and Eddies is letting you eat there free on your birthday too. Like i say, i have been to this place numerous times, and it has been very good, but has slid down in the last few years. Whatever problems are going on behind the scenes, i feel its creeping into the seating area and affecting the service at this once-hugely popular restaurant.
-shelter 3 & 1/2 out of 5
You can eat here for your Birthday for free! Â Pretty much anything you want!!! Â There are some really good things on the menu. Â I really like the Buffalo chicken dip and nachos. The ale house caters more to the bar then to the people in the dining room.
I'd sit in the bar area and avoid the dining room if at all possible..You get more attention. AND you get to play Keno and buy some scratch tickets. Â I personally like it more in there anyway.
I love Abington Ale House for two reasons:
1.) THE BREAD!!! Amazing...crusty on the outside, soft and somewhat underdone on the inside, and that butter, ohhhh that butter that melts perfectly on a piping hot fresh loaf...HEAVEN.
2.) BUFFALO CHICKEN DIP!!! Although, it was only half as good as it usually is the last time I visited the Ale House, I still love it, and long for it's deliciousness now and again.
Other than those two things, I am never really too impressed with the menu, and usually find myself wishing they had more or better offerings. The burgers aren't bad, but nothing special. The martinis are delicious. I would continue to come here again and again for the bread alone.
The bar area is fun, and they usually have a good band playing, or something going on. The drinks and service have always been good as well.
The good: big bar w a good amount of TVs, nice outside patio when the weather is right, free meal on your birthday, a decent place to go if u need a drink on a Friday/Saturday night.
The not so good: the food here is just blah. Nothing special about it at all. The decor seems pretty out dated and bland. Service is eh. Lots of townies but that's to be expected.
Overall I'd only come here to meet friends for a drink. It would not be my first choice in dining options.
This used to be on my regular visitation list but the service and food quality and management have steadily gone down hill. Â I simply cannot believe the utter stupidity of the management of this place. Â They take favorites (and big sellers like nachos and pot pie) off the frickin' menu and then have to put them back on because of the customer complaints. While traditionally they have had a great draft beer selection they recently decided that doing away with Harpoon IPA and replacing it with some IPA you never heard of before that is obviously made with sewer water was the last straw for me. Â The food is mediocre at best. Â All the servers and bar tenders seem miserable. Â This place belongs on one of those "Save this Restaurant" shows because we are obviously dealing with a management problem. Get a clue about your business and I might come back some day.
Review Source:First things first. Hostesses just stared at us while we walked in  didn't even greet us and continued to stare. Didn't feel welcomed at all.
We just ended up going to the bar because they just stared at us and
We're confused about what to do.
Sitting at the bar no biggie but when we sat down the bartender Donna I believe her name was? Super rude too. Took her 10 minutes to pour are beers and never asked if we needed a menu. Finally she came over to ask, my friends beer was empty by the time she finally came back over and we put the glass right up front so she would see it. Finally took our food order then ran away.
We decided to order an app after the fact and it literally came out in 6 seconds. Which we were happy about because we were hungry. So do they microwave it or????
Every staff member that we came across this evening was so rude and awkward. Overall food sucked horrible service good beer. Cheers!!!!!
Went there with hubby for a late lunch on 5/13/2012.
He ordered the fish and chips, and substituted the chips with onion rings instead. The fish was fresh, and they certainly give you a lot of food. I can't say I am a big fan of their onion strings. They were greasy and hubby didn't like it either.
I ordered a bowl of chili and a side of sweet potato fries. The sweet potato fries were well-made. No complaint there. The chili has to be the thickest, chunkiest chili I have ever had. Not feeling too hungry, I thought I made the right choice to go for a bowl of chili instead of a full meal. I was dead wrong. They served their chili on a good 10-inch bowl, the serving was enormous. They chili was topped with a ton of melted cheese and tricolor tortilla chips. I can see getting this again when I had one too many to drink or extremely hungry.
The ambiance is what you will expect in a bar/restaurant type setting. A caution will be to ask for a table furthest away from the kitchen. We can hear people screaming and yelling in the kitchen the entire time there. Definitely not the kinda place you want to bring a date or to impress the in-laws.
I enjoy coming to the Abington Ale House for a drink every now and then. I prefer it over many restaurants in the area and they have a great atmosphere inside. Aside from being a great place to watch a game, they have excellent soups and I am very fond of their pizza's and burgers. The Waitstaff is friendly and service there has never been an issue for me.
Review Source:Love the Ale house... I have loved the Ale House for as long as I can remember, but after reading all the reviews Im sad...
I can start by saying I have been coming here since it was Teel's Cabin & I paid what I weighed when I was a toddler, so I think the whole appeal to me was it reminds me of when I was little with my parents... I know it has changed over the years, and things have dropped off... and I can honestly say I dont even remember if the food was that good when I was a kid, its just the nostalgia of childhood - Im sure you can all remember the feeling, so things from that time always make you happy...
The food is good comfort food, Pot Pies, Fried Foods... Good burgers... They used to have better apps but they have seemed to drop off some of the better ones... They also used to have a few more seafood selections but oh well...
The onion soup I LOVE... I just think its the best, THE BREAD.. OMG, I could eat 3 loaves when there... I think whipped butter is what makes it fabulous...
I have had pretty much everything off the menu at one time or another & I like it all, Im not expecting 5 star restaurants but its decent for what it is... The price is decent...
The service isnt the best, lots of waiters/waitresses who Im sure would rather be someone else & absolutely have no personalites...
So if you are going for cheap drinks & food then this is your stop... If you are looking for fine dining, keep driving down the road!
I don't know why, but a friend of ours swears by this place and whenever they come down from the North Shore, we always end up here. Â Fortunately, it's only 5 minutes up the road from us. Â First and foremost, every time I walk in the front door, I feel like I'm in the set from "The Great Outdoors." Â The interior is extremely dark and very uninviting. Â And the weird decorations... holy shit. Â There is a mounted deer, a mounted crocodile (I kid you not...) and an abhorrent amount of creepy looking clown figurines. Â You think I'm kidding, but I'm not.
The menu has nothing that really stands out. Â Our friend swears by their buffalo chicken dip, which is more cheesy than chicken-y and served with multi-colored tortilla chips. Â It is actually quite good and quite tasty. Â The rest of the menu is overpriced at best. Â I had a chicken caesar salad that offered nothing particularly special. Â The romaine was barely chopped and I spent half my time cutting the lettuce. Â One person in our group that had the fish and chips. Â The fish wasn't cooked properly and the fried batter just fell apart from the fish. Â Yuck. Â
The good news is they boast a rather large beer selection. Â The food is mediocre, if not bad, and ghastly overpriced. Â Yet, nearly every time I drive by, the parking lot is packed. Â Maybe I'm missing something? Â The tables and booths are extremely large, there are plenty of TVs in the bar area with the current games, and there is space for large groups. Â But honestly, that's about it.
I really want to like this place... I come here at least once a year hoping that it will obtain a worthy three stars but sad to say nothing changes and their menu just isn't enticing. Â
When I came here for lunch with the family our common reaction to the menu was "ho-hum"... there just isn't much that stands out and I think the biggest news was that they brought the nachos back on the menu, whoopdeedoo! Â Why would you ever take nachos off the menu to begin with? Â Well, after ordering them I realized why they had taken them off... they burnt them. Â Ahhh what can you do, we enjoyed them anyway... at least all the cheesy goodness survived underneath the sacrificial tortillas.
I ordered their turkey tip hoagie and it was alright. Â It was definitely filling with plenty of meat falling out of the buns but I honestly felt I could have the same meal for less at the local sub shop. Â Its to bad because I like the quirky ambiance and their bar is huge! Â
If I come back its just for drinks and apps.
I remember the Barretts as having better food. Â Maybe my palatte was less developed.
Stick with the beer only. I ordered a burger and said "Medium Rare". Â What was served was a piece of grey meat that had the life cooked out of it. Â No risk of any bug lasting through the cooking process but also suitable for a charcoal briquette. Â Served on a stale ciabatta roll.
The folks next to me at the bar were asking questions abot the menu. Â The bartender had no clue as to any details. Â At least fake it honey and make the clientelle think you know your stuff.
The Sam Adams was perfectly poured. Â My mom taught me to say something nice about everything.
Went here tonight for my cousins birthday, you know 'cause they give you a free meal for your birthday and all. I wouldn't go here for any other reason other than it was my cousins birthday... it was so cold inside that Kelly M. had to put on her jacket and I got a headache. Service is not good either, our server clearly forgot to put in one of the dinner orders for our party and didn't express any sort of apology for it when 6 of the 7 meals came out. We overheard all of the waitstaff personal conversations from our table and watched them eat their food too, very unprofessional.
Ale House you've really gone downhill.
I'm sad that I have to give this place even 1 star.
This was the worst service I have ever recieved...anywhere. Ever.
Met friends here on a Friday night. One friend had gotten there before all of us and had been served a drink and appetizer (buffalo chicken queso dip, pretty tasty).
We all got there and our waitress came over pretty quickly and took our drink orders. She soon came back and got our food orders as well.
About 15 minutes went by, we asked a different waitress where our drinks were. Our waitress came by about 10 minutes later, saying she had told someone to get our drinks but (obviously) they hadn't. Instead of getting them herself, we waited another 10 minutes and got our food....still no drinks. What?
I shared a buger with my guy, it was fine. Our friend ordered a chicken club, and it was obvious the sandwhich was not proportional (a HUGE piece of chicken on a thin bun with miniscule toppings.
Maybe 5 minutes later our drinks came, with an apology. Not accepted!
It would be easy to blame it on a busy restauraunt, if it had been. No, there just weren't that many people there.
We were angry, it put a damper on our evening to be kept waiting about half an hour for drinks. I will never, EVER come back here.
Went here after an event I attended since it was on our way home. We were seated immediately and loved the decor of the restaurant. Our waiter came over, took our drink order and brought me back the wrong soda. No big deal.
I had the chicken club sandwich, which had 2 large pieces of chicken on it. It was very tasty. My lunch partner had a pastrami sandwich which was smaller than expected yet he said was tasty, yet not worth the price based on the size of it. The waiter was not very attentive and he went by twice seeing an empty glass before we had to ask for a refill on our beverages.
Once in the car I said I probably wouldn't go back here but would be willing to order take out from them if I lived closer.
They should change the name to Abington Fail House.
I don't know what happened to it, the last time I went in, the food was decent, but the other day they were way off their game.
I got the fish and chips, which by most standards is pretty hard to screw up. They managed to do it. No seasoning on the fries, and the only way the cole slaw was edible was to soak it with malt vinegar. I'm a bit fussy about my slaw, but this was just soaked cabbage. The fish itself was actually good.
My wife got baked scallops, which were actually really, really good. The sides however, left much to be desired. If the lack of seasoning wasn't bad enough, the veggies were of the frozen variety, and the potatoes were mashed to what I wouldn't even call a paste. I know they weren't instant because there were skins, but c'mon now. And not to beat a dead horse... No seasoning on the taters either. Not even a little parsley flakes for some garnish. For a 16 dollar meal, can you at least make an effort?
Good service might have saved a lackluster meal, but no. If it had been packed and crazy busy on the patio, the staff might have an excuse. No. It was dead, and most of the staff looked and acted like they would have rather been anywhere else.
Really hit-or-miss. I'm going to vote with my wallet and not spend any money there in the future, at least until they sort out whatever issues they have going on in the back of the house.
This was my second time here, the first time we visited it was late and it was the only late night food option in the area.
Second visit was a Wednesday night evening and it was packed. Decor is fun, lots to look at.
Typical bar food. Drinks were good. Staff was friendly and helpful. I got the Burger and Fries. They were alright, very average. We shared the Buffalo Chicken Dip, it was good, but again nothing special. We also shared the Chocolate Chip Cookie Sundae, that was probably the best thing we ate there.
So, let's get 1 or 5 things straight:
1. This place is in/on the South Shore of MA.  Not the South Shore of the French Riviera.  There is a major difference. Or différence.
2. Decorations, shmecorations. Â You want ambiance? Â Remember the above.
3. It's supposed to be a 'pub'. Â Now, I haven't been "across the pond" *gags self* to a British or Irish pub, but I am assuming they are different from U.S. 'pubs'. Â AAH is in the tradition of the suburban, U.S. 'pub' in which children and kitsch and over-happy are considered normal and welcomed.
4. People who have birthdays falling on the day that they go to the AAH will receive a *free meal. No waiting for coupons/gift certs/see-you-next-year-for-the-free-app-we-said-Âwe-might-provide vouchers. Â Nunnathat! Â
5. See #1
So, the food at lunch...
We ordered 2 loaves of bread. They were smallish (for 5 ppl) warm, round, and tasty. Â The butter/margarine was really cold and hard to spread, but the bread was good.
Salads = huge. Â I'm talkin' served in a bowl not only shaped as a Brontosaurus egg holder, but could probably fit a Brontosaurus egg [insert if-statements here]. Â The Road House Salad (hold the dressing) had fresh mesclun lettuce and some other nice veggies. Â It comes with grilled chicken. Â Warning: the chicken is not char-grilled; it's more 'George Foreman Grill' grilled chicken. Â It was good nonetheless. Â Two family members had the Taco Salads and subbed the grilled chicken. Â They enjoyed the salads.
My grandfather - the birthday person - enjoyed his *free fish and chips. Â He could have had a beer, but he ordered a liter of cola instead. Â Well, he asked for diet coke and they came back with what looked like a liter of cola. Â Water glasses were the same size.
My grandmother ordered the chicken club sandwich: a large, fried chicken breast, bacon, tomato, and lettuce. Â She went healthy with steamed broccoli instead of fries. She enjoyed it.
So to round up a long review, AAH is a family-friendly place that probably hosts a number of graduation/birthday parties and has a huge parking lot that is always full although the restaurant is not. Â It's fine. Â Just remember the first 5 tips at the beginning of this review and you'll be safe.
*the birthday meal is free as long as someone else is eating and buying a meal with you. The lesson here is to take a friend, colleague, acquaintance, FB friend, Yelper with you on your birthday and get a free meal with a big ole chocolate cupcake and a birthday song by the employees.
run of the mill 99 style road house. Good for families of meeting pals after work etc... Food is decent, the bar is well stocked and they have a good selection of brews and an outdoor pation with its own bar in the summer. Granted, the view is the parking lot and charming route 18 but at least you're outside. They also own the Charlie Horses in Kingston and W Bridgewater and have some connection to Barretts Ales House in Bridgewater(same family). Not a destination place but a reliable and convenient watering hole/pub chow joint.
Review Source:How do you call yourself an "ale house" and not brew your own ale? How do you toss around stuff you found at yard sales and craft shows and call it decorating? Â How in the world is your parking lot always jam-packed?
The only saving grace of this place is that it's super easy to get to--making it a good meet-up spot on the South Shore. Â Other than that, I'm at a loss.
The food is ok. Â The decor is kind of interesting at first, but then it just looks like they tried to find random junk to put everywhere to have a "theme." Â
It is usually busy every time I go there and is very family oriented so don't be surprised by lots of loud little kids.
They have pretty good parking, though. Â That's always a plus in this state.
I can't even remember exactly what I ordered there the last 2 times I went. Â I guess you could say the food is kind of forgettable.
The place I wanted to go was closed for new year's day (boo) so we gps'ed our way to this place.
Reasonably priced.
The pretzel bites and jalapeno pub cheese they give out at the bar was gross to me, but i don't know if you'll like it....I got a turkey burger and my friend got jumbalya. we both really liked our entrees. the polka dot reisling was gross (dry) but the scarborough sauv blanc was perfect.
There was tons of staff standing around. 3 manager-looking people and 3 bouncer-looking people. Does this place require big, burly, bouncer types?? hm....
Lots of locals, not much of a crowd. I went there bc I was already nearby and super-hungry. nothing special.
Ate here again it is OK, but not great.
The service needs some work. They had a lot of staff but they were to busy chatting and goofing off.
The place was slow but I guess they were expecting too get busy.
Our waitress disappeared numerous times. It did not help that someone else delivers the food and runs, so if you want something it was a hassle.
It took forever to get my draft beers.
They served out appetizer and did not bring any knives and forks.
Some of the side plates were not clean so we took some from another table.
We finally were able to get someones attention and and get some silverware, but we still did not see our waitress.
Even after the bill was dropped of she forgot to come back and run the card. We had to ask someone to find her.
I could understand if the place was as busy as it usually is, but the staff outnumbered the customers.
For a app we got the onion rings.
It was hot and fresh and is a huge order.
We also got the boneless buffalo wings and they were OK, but overpriced.
For my meal I had the Fried Lobster special.
It was a very nice portion (all claw meat), but was a little overcooked IMO.
We also had the Asian salad and it was OK, but the noodles were way overcooked. Might be better with fried crispy noodles.
They also do not put enough dressing on it so ask for extra on the side.
I would recommend teh place, but it could be so much better with just a little effort.
Came here purely because I heard they had Ranch dressing with bacon in it. Â Mmmmm...
Friday night, at the height of dinner time. Â Took us less than 10min to get a table - Sweet!
The entire dinner took us no more than 45min - that includes eating, paying, and exiting. Â I felt slightly rushed, and forced out to get more people in.
Our appetizer came in 5min. Â Ummm, no cooking neccessary? Â Our entrees came no more than 10min later. Â Ok, so definitely no cooking involved here. Â I got the Country Fried Chicken - the breading was not actually attached to the chicken, thank you modern advances such as the MICROWAVE for making sure my fried chicken is soggy. Â So underwhelmed. Â The steak tips were good though.
However, next time I want a microwaved meal, I'll make sure to stay in with my Lean Cuisine, thank you.
The Bacon Ranch was good though.
My friends and I always talk about going to Abington Ale House, but we never really knew if it was worth giving it a try. Â Luckily, I was pleasantly surprised one Thursday night when I stopped in after work. Â The Ale House is a lot bigger than I expected! Â It includes both a bar and restaurant set-up. Â Both sides of the restaurant are equal in size. Â Instead of being the dingy, townie bar that I was expecting, I was happy to step into a bright and open bar area that included booths and high tables scattered around the bar. Â There were huge TVs set up around the room, making it easy for us to watch the Celtics game. Â
We were seated right away in the bar area, and I have to admit that our waiter was very pleasant and patient with the indecisiveness of my dining partner and I. Â We eventually ordered the nachos off of the Appetizers menu so that I could add to my Yelp Nacho list. Â For only $9, we were served a plate of multi-colored tortilla chips covered with chili, cheese, salsa, diced tomatoes, jalapenos, and sour cream. Â These nachos were good, but I have tasted better chili. Â We didn't need to order more food because of how filling the nachos were...However, I always have room for dessert; so, we ordered and split the Strawberry Shortcake. Â After a short wait, I was surprised to see a humungous sundae bowl consisting of a freshly baked biscuit, strawberries, whipped cream, and ice cream set in front of us. Â It was absolutely delicious...we finished the whole thing! Â
I plan on coming back here in the future. Â I'm not sure if I would order the nachos again, but the dessert was a winner. Â This place seems fun for a crowd, and I liked the atmosphere a lot.
For my "Nacho Average Reviews" list: 2.5 stars
So I'm gonna go right in the middle and give the Ale House 3 stars.
Came here on Friday night with a friend to grab a bite to eat after some intense shopping at Ikea. I'm not a very adventurous eater, so I got the rustic mac & cheese - Amazing (and yes, that deserved a capital a!).
Service was just ok - I feel like we got ignored for a bit but then again we were sitting on the bar side and there were only 2 waitresses for the entire bar AND it was a Friday night.
P.S. - good for people watching! :)
My boyfriend and I went to the Abington Ale House for a late dinner after checking out Barrett's Haunted Mansion across the parking lot... and, well, I think the Ale House may have actually been a little scarier than the haunted house.
The decor looks as if it was designed by a committee of bored, disagreeable old ladies. Â One wall is full of large clown figurines, there was an enormous carved lion standing right next to us as we ate, and there was what appeared to be an actual, stuffed gray wolf in a glass case sitting between the bar and the restaurant. Â Oh, and did I mention the busts of Charlie Chaplin and Laurel & Hardy? Â Or the ceramic Mickey and Minnie Mouse figurines? Â Or the knotty pine wood paneling that lines the entire seating area?
As my boyfriend walked into the bathroom after we ordered, an older man was walking out of it and said "That place smells like a $*#!hole." Â And he was right.
There was a guy with a guitar providing entertainment in the bar. Â He sang (almost exclusively) some of the greatest hits of the late 90's - if you'd forgotten about Sublime, FIlter, or Duncan Sheik, he was there to remind you of them.
The food was decidedly sub par. Â My boyfriend's turkey burger was juicy, but pressed super thin and wasn't really appetizing. Â My BBQ chicken and cheese sandwich was made up of 90% bread, 8% chicken, 1.95% cheese, and 0.05% BBQ sauce... not a really great ratio. The fries were bland and undercooked.
The one good thing I can say about this place is that our server was extremely pleasant - but all the politeness in the world can't save this place. Â I you want mediocre pub food, there's a 99 down the street - at least there, you know what you're getting into.
The first time I ever came to Abington Ale House was not to eat. Â In fact, I didn't even sit down. Â I simply came in to use the bathroom to accompany a co-worker (I was working at Barrett's Haunted House at the time) to put his creepy red contacts in to scare the little children next door. Â
Finally though, somewhat recently, I arrived at the restaurant for a friend's birthday night dinner here. Â Apparently, you receive a free entree if it is your birthday with a flash of your ID. They sing a cheesy birthday song and bring over a free dessert. Â THAT IS. . . if they remember that it really IS your birthday and continue with tradition. Â Bill came, waitress went. . . and my friend still sat there with no song and no cake, even after establishing that her entree was free for the eventful day. Â We sent our friend to the bathroom then acted like bounty hunters to find the waitress (which we couldn't) and ended up asking the hostess to have someone bring over the celebration.
Is it absolutely necessary to have to ask for all this? Â Especially since we heard 4+ other song and dance sessions around the restaurant during our time there. Â Unbelievable. Â Food was so so. Â A bit expensive for the quality served. Â I had Marinated Sirloin Tips with rice and a vegetable of the day. Â Pretty standard, nothing outstanding. Â Doubt I would return here by my own choice. Â
Restaurant is filled with sections of random knick knacks, all related to each other is some way or another. Â Gave it a very cluttered appearance. Â Screaming babies, frustrated families, overworked staff. Â Unenjoyable atmosphere.
If you are old enough you can weep with us over the loss of Teel's Cabin which occupied this spot years ago, a true gem.
We just went to the Ale House Sunday 6/7/09.  I chose it because it was gorgeous out and I knew they had a great large patio.
We like the pastrami there, that is what we both got.  It also comes with a good half sour pickle, as opposed to some glow in the dark green nasty thing.
It is interesting reading about the declining service.  My waitress made it seem as if I were asking her to climb the Himalayas to get me a Wachusett Bluberry draft...."Well that will be a while...it comes from way over there."  What kind of an attitude is that ?  the food comes from that direction too, there is no kitchen out on the patio.  Out back they only have 3 drafts, and 2 of those are Miller and Coors Light, not funky "Ale House" fare.
She was slow to bring the beer, and brought french fries after I went out of my way to order anything but as a side.
So I would suggest that there is a management problem here if waitresses feel free to express their reluctance to fetch ale at an alehouse, and some changes are in order.
The food was okay. Â The service was not.
I am not happy that the server asked if we wanted bread, but failed to tell us there was an extra charge for it. Â Yes, it's written in small print on the menu, but she asked us about the bread as she was handing us the menus, before we had even opened them to look.
And please explain to me why, on the kids menu, an item is listed as SPAGHETTI and sauce, but what they actually serve you is PENNE PASTA and sauce? Â There is a big difference there, and it's partially my fault for not reading the description under the heading "SPAGHETTI AND SAUCE", but stupid me, I thought it was pretty self explanatory. Â Who knew that in Abington spaghetti and penne are used interchangeably?
Don't even get me started on the waitress who, once we received our food, didn't even bother to come back to check if we needed more drinks or anything. Â We didn't see her until it was obvious we were done and needed our check. Â I don't think I'll come back, unless it's my birthday when the meal will be free.
I have been going here since I was a kid, I even had my confirmation party here. Â They don't have much on their Menu, just American classics, but what they do have is really good. Â I would think it's safe to say they have one of the best burgers in the area, I almost always get it. The portions are really big, as well.
Now that I'm older I go here to drink every once in a while. In the summer it's great, because it had a patio where you can smoke. It's a good place to go if you just want a few drinks on a weekday night. Sometimes there is live music, but it's more annoying then anything.
There is plenty of seating but no dancing, or any place to even mingle. If you go on a weekend it can take a very long time to get a drink. If you think you can counter this by getting two drinks at a time you're wrong they will only give you one.
A few months ago in September my friend ordered a Martini and someone came over and took it away from her. They told her she was too drunk and they wouldn't serve her anymore. I had only had one drink at the point so I was sober enough to safely say that my friend was not too drunk, and was doing absolutely nothing that was out of line. We think they may have mistakened her for someone who had been throwing up in the bathroom. Never the less it was ridiculous and made many of my friends not want to go back there. The place is way over cautious... to the point where I wonder how they make any money.
I'm surprised no one has reviewed this before! Â The Abington Ale House is a great restaurant that has been around for a while now...its right on rt 18 (where the Barrett's Haunted Mansion is).
Typical american style menu, but the portions are big and the food is great! Â
I just went last night for the first time in years...they have added out door seating and updated the bar area with flat screen TVs. Â The decore is all antique toys and hard to find items--all picked out by hand by the owner AND for sale!
Anyways, we started with the Nachos, which were pretty amazing. Â I love nachos and can be picky about them, but these were really great and fairly large too!
I always recommend the BBQ Grilled Chicken Sandwhich to anyone who goes there. Â Its AMAZING. Â Served on thick toasted texas toast, with bacon and cheese....delicious! Â
Other people in my party got the Turkey BLT, which was stacked high also on texas toast; and onion soup and everyone loved everything.
our waitress was also very observant and took very good care of us!
A MUST TRY!!
