This place was great! Â A friend of mine brought me here during a visit to the area and I really enjoyed it. Â The food was consistently good, the different sauces tasted fresh and if they came out of a can they certainly did a good job disguising it. Â
I had a shredded chicken enchilada that I really enjoyed. Â The chicken was tender and juicy and had a really nice flavor. Â Their re-fried beans were a bit salty but were still pretty good. Â My friends got a fajita platter for 2 that looked really good! Â All the vegis were really fresh and sauteed nicely- not over or under cooked. Â
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, it's a bit pricy but not horrible. Â I think we paid about $80 for 3 people that included 4 alcoholic drinks. Â I would definitely go back to this place.
I've been a fan of Abuelo's since when they opened in the Cincinnati area several years ago, and have been to the Deerfield (Mason area/NE suburbs) location multiple times. I loved not only the food, but also the atmosphere: very classy, not stereotypical/kitschy Mexican that you'd find in at hole-in-the-walls or even some chains.
I stopped here with my friend on a car trip from Chicago to Cincinnati, and were looking to eat somewhere after getting out of rush hour traffic in the big city. We were served promply, and very nicely, with a place to sit, and frequently with iced tea, and some delicious food! Lovely service! It's easy to get disenchanted with chain restaurants, and having stopped in Merrillville, that's all I really know of, but I found Abuelo's to be a safe bet, and like in the past back home, did not leave disappointed!
